Is Katie Couric headed back to the ‘Today’ show?

I’m not sure how you bitches feel when we cover pure media stories, but this gossip pretty juicy. Apparently, Katie Couric’s CBS contract comes up for renewal next May, and Page Six’s sources claim that she’s thinking about leaving her gig as anchor of CBS’s Evening News. They also think that Couric might go back to the Today show, because apparently, Meredith Vieira is also considering leaving, because her husband is sick and she wants to spend more time with her family:

Katie Couric might end up back on the “Today” show when her “CBS Evening News” contract expires at the end of May. A spot will be open because Meredith Vieira is expected to leave “Today” to spend more time with her family.

Sources say Couric had been talking with her old friend Jeff Zucker, her producer at “Today” before he rose to CEO of NBC-Universal. But Zucker’s just-announced exit from the network won’t preclude a Couric move to NBC.

She’s also lunched with Time Warner chairman Jeff Bewkes, whose empire includes CNN. Sources also say she gets along famously with CBS boss Les Moonves and might stay with the Tiffany Network, although for a much lower paycheck than the $15 million a year she’s said to be making now.

I kind of think it would be a dumb move for Couric to go back to Today. Even though she would probably get a lucrative contract, everyone would be like “Oh, she couldn’t hack the hard news, she had to go back to morning television.” I don’t think that – I think Couric has ended up being a solid anchor, with a few bumps here and there. I also think it would be step down to go from network news to CNN – especially since CNN’s ratings are plummeting. Of course, CBS’s ratings aren’t awesome (for the news anyway).

    NOOOOOO!!!!

  2. mln says:

Diane Sawyer has my respect because she took on an anchor spot with so much subtly that no one comments on her role as an anchor and she has more gravitas then Brian Williams. Katie is likable and she does an OK job but she is more a celebrity/name brand then she is an reporter, if she leaves for the Today show it would be seen as a big fail. BTW I don’t mind you commenting on “real” media because I think you are smart enough and plugged in enough to have an interesting opinion.

  3. Rex says:

    She is a big fail!

  4. mree says:

    PUT HARRY IN THERE
    THAT WOULD WORK

  5. Tia C says:

Oh please no. She is SO annoying. I don’t need her irritating me further in the morning when I’m already irritated trying to get ready to go to work at my ho-hum job.

I didn’t know Meredith was leaving Today. I hope things work out for her and she doesn’t have to. I really like her.

  6. original kate says:

my god, does anyone actually watch the today show anymore?

  7. Kaiser says:

Original Kate – I do! I switch between Today & GMA for a half an hour when I first wake up, while I’m having breakfast.

  8. Jeri says:

I wouldn’t watch her on Today. I have the show on while I get ready for work but she has always irritated me and I don’t want to watch anything she does.

Meredith is very brave in the way she handles her husbands illness without trying to capitalize on it.

  9. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

I so dont care for CC. I hope Meredith stays, I like her. I turn on GMA in the waiting room for our patients in the morn and glance up every once and awhile. I would change it if CC came back.

  10. kelbear says:

I watch The Today Show most mornings and when she first announced she was leaving it I was disappointed but the show turned out to do really well without her. So I personally wouldn’t really want her to go back.

  11. Liz says:

How is this “juicy gossip?” she sucks, and ever since she took over the news ratings have been catastrophic. She’s not worth $15mil- or $15.

  12. Riley says:

I love the Today Show, at least the 7 to 7:35 time slot. I didn’t think I would be able to watch after Katie left but I really love Meredith. She is fantastic. She is funny, brilliant, and knows how to ask hard questions and keep people on point (I think this is where Anne Curry kind of fails, though I have tremendous respect for her and thinks she does a good job reporting the news). I am sad to hear Meredith is leaving. I don’t like Amy Roebuck all that much but I kind of do like Natalie Morales and think she could be a good fit (she needs to loosen up a couple of notches though). Bringing Katie back though would be like asking Paula to return to Idol. I just don’t think it would work. I do think Katie could host her own news magazine show, something like CBS’s Sunday Morning or even Ira Glass’s This American Life (but for television and not radio). I think she would be a great host, introducing us to all kinds of people and places.

  13. Ron says:

Never a good idea to go back…..

  14. guesty says:

love the way ‘the soup’ used to always make fun of ann curry & her “good mornings”!

idky…but lately…i’m finding that show & everyone on it a major annoyance.

  15. mln says:

@ Riley they did a This American Life on Showtime for 2 seasons I don’t think it was renewed though.

  16. The Bobster says:

Say it ain’t so! She would do to the Today Show what she did to the CBS Evening News: drive it into the ratings cellar. People are getting fed up with Chipmunk Cheeks’ distortion of the news to reflect her libtarded agenda.

  17. Horatio says:

Couric is responsible for this largest loss of viewer in the entire history of television. She’s not an intellectual, is always bathed in soft light, and her gums are distracting. GET OFF MY TV!!!

  18. Marjalane says:

I get my news online, and I’m at work before the Today show even starts, so it’s a non-question for me. I do like Meredith Viera better than Katie Couric though.

  19. BethL says:

Katie is not going back to the Today Show. That would be too pathetic. You can’t move forward than go back.

  20. tango says:

Katie has enough money so if she leaves the nightly news, she just needs to retire for a few years. Or just do special correspondant pieces and stop with a daily gig.

  21. stanhope says:

Katy Couric? yuck. The only good thing she ever did was ambush Sarah Pain-lin. Meredith Viera has gotten a very big head and she is a source of great disdain. They need to bring Bryant Gumbel back then the Today show should snatch Sam Champion as Al Roker is also annoying. That would be great.

  22. Tess says:

Brilliant move. Like changing deck chairs on the Titanic.

At least half the country is turned off by the leftist tilt of network news programs.

If networks want ratings, they should try some balance.

  23. mollination says:

OH I WOULD LOVE THAT!!!!! I LOVE THE TODAY SHOW WHEN KATIE AND MATT ARE TOGETHER!!!! haha. It’s homey.

  24. Diane Sutton says:

No, no, no do not bring Katie back to the Today show. She is the most irritating person ever, I started watching GMA much better of a show. Why don’t they just put Anne Currie in the slot after MV leaves, she would do a much better job and is just plain nice.

  25. Suzanne says:

All Katie cared about was that the camera showed her legs, which she feels are fit for the movies. She is obnoxious and treated Sarah Palin like dirt. I can’t wait till someone dishes that back to her and her mirror.

Matt Lauer is good. His private life is his own. What celebrities aren’t having affairs. I don’t think it’s Meredith, however. She’s a nervous wreck lately.

  26. Jessica says:

I heard that since she’s not going back to the Today Show, she wants to create her own show with Matt Lauer, therefore he might leave along with Meredith. I certainly do not want Matt leaving, he’s one of the most epic anchors.

  27. Henry says:

I do not like Katie she is annoying and concieted. DON’T BRING HER BACK!!!!
