For the past I don’t even know how many months (three?), we’ve been hearing about Jessica Simpson’s new boyfriend, Eric Johnson, and what a loser he is. He’s a reitred NFL player who was supposed to go to Wharton Business School but ended up dropping out so he could spend more time with Jessica and her boobs and her money. We’ve heard many, many stories about how Jessica is paying for everything in the relationship (including her own jewelry, which Eric then “gives” her), and how Jessica – in her own words – feels “lucky” to be with a jobless business school dropout. Lately, however, her friends have really started going to the press (as unnamed sources) to bitch about Eric. This happened last week with Us Weekly’s hilarious bitchfest about Jessica and her gay BFF Ken Paves breaking up – Camp Paves leaked lots of funny quotes. Now Us Weekly has another hit piece:
Is Jessica Simpson’s flame dating her for fame? Eric Johnson, 31, “was never that successful in the NFL, but he’s always wanted the celebrity lifestyle,” a source tells Hot Stuff. “I believe that Jessica is his way to get famous. He’s using her.”
And it’s working out well for him, adds the insider: “She pays for most things. He doesn’t have the kind of money for first-class plane tickets or private jets.”
Some of her pals suspect the athlete – who is divorcing his wife of five years, stylist Keri Johnson – is in it for the perks.
“Eric doesn’t have a job, he just follows her around,” adds a second insider. “Her friends do not trust him.”
Still, a Simpson source counters that Johnson “has his own money from real estate properties,” and his lawyer, Richard Stilz, tells Us Weekly, “This has nothing to do with greed or fame. He cares a lot for Jessica and doesn’t care a hoot about her money.”

Granted, I’ve never heard Eric speak, but he strikes me as kind of a dumb guy. Do I think that about every guy who dates Jessica? Sure. I just don’t see how you could possibly have continued conversations with her. But if you’re her boyfriend and you get to have sex with her, it’s probably more interesting. So – is Eric a dumb guy who just fell in love with equally dumb Jessica, or is Eric some kind of brilliant slacker who is simply happy to be supported by the woman who adores him? Eh.

Dumb and Dumber IMO… just with cash flow. Who wouldnt like their BF or GF to have enough money to ride in style. Im not ashamed to say I would enjoy the perks. And anyway, when a dude who is famous dates a non famous girl, who do you think pays for everything. Its ok if that is what SHE wants to do. I for one think Jessica comes across as a sweet girl and am not of the camp that believes no guy could ever really love her. How does anyone (including HER friends ie Ken Paves) know what he wants in life? And why do we believe the nasty comments but not the denials?
Also, I’ve been hearing more than once about him having money from real estate, so I guess that makes that true if repeating something over and over makes it the truth. So he’s not some poor desolute soul. And he’s a Yale grad which means the dumb comments are just to disparage Jessica in yet another way.

@Sugarplum– But everyone *is* talking about how Canalis is just a dumb, gold-digging cokewh$re. I don’t think, these days, that men necessarily always get a free pass when they hook up with freeloading chicks who are dating them for money and fame. Maybe it’s just interesting that the phenomenon seems to be happening more with women and their male hangers-on. It definitely seems to be true of this guy (though how rich and famous is Simpson anymore? She strikes me as so 2005).

Ken Paves is just pissed because he doesn’t get the say anymore. He had too much control over Jessica then he should have. he can try as he may to difuse it & talk other clients but his connection with Jessica is what makes Ken Paves & if he was the leaks then how could he ever be trusted with anyother clients he now has. Idk. Ken Paves probably leaked the story. I think it’s his sincere opinion. How much of it is legit? Hard to say because for all we know Ken Paves has a very specific idea of who would be OK for Jessica (must be famous, must have own $$$) and Eric obviously doesn’t fit that. But then again Ken’s idea of who’s right for Jessica hasn’t worked out too well for her.
I was honestly more disturbed by the endless and staged photo ops when they’d only been dating a couple months and the “Look at me, I’m dating a Yalie!!!!” stuff than the idea that Jessica might be supporting him.

I’ve never understood why this gal is rich and famous. No talent, very average looking. I tried one of beauty products once and had a horrible allergic reaction to it. The stuff is horrible quality. I hear she puts her name on clothes also, which baffles me even more, becuz every time I see her she is horribly dressed. I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that since he went to Yale, has money of his own from investments, it could be that he’s using her for sex, not fame. She’s his Marilyn, a good bonk and then she’ll be tossed aside. Just because a lot of men aren’t famous, it doesn’t make them inferior to women who are. I mean, look at how Jessica makes her money, she’s not a shipping tycoon.
Same with other people who aren’t famous. There are people outside of Hollywood who are filthy rich beyond your dreams and they aren’t throwing themselves at the celebs, trying to get fifteen minutes of fame. Nick Cannon has been in the business since 1998, in various TV shows, CDs, and is now the development and creative consultant of the Teen Nick. I’m sure Mariah has waaaay more money than him but he’s nothing like this guy at all.

Marilyn wrote poetry, painted, talked about civil rights, and helped Ella Fitzgerald get the attention she deserved when a club owner wanted to reject her. Just based on the color of her skin. Marilyn had a baseball player crazy about her that never married again. Another bright and famous writer that was crazy about her. She had mental illness in her family, with her mom. She was to believed to have suffered from . She also abused as an orphan.
She had a good heart, was a great talent/artist, and had a hard life as a youth. She could sing and could act. Had diverse roles. It’s amazing what you find out by watching YouTube. Also scouring the Internet. Marilyn was in a league of her own. More than just a pretty face. Only person she was known for sure to have slept with are the one’s she married .

Jessica Simpson is a total mystery to me. This woman can’t dress yet she supposedly has a multi-million dollar clothing and shoe line. She is very average looking — can’t act — her singing is nothing to get excited about. She completely lacks intellect and doesn’t seem to have a passion for anything besides men and an obvious penchant for fried food. Why on earth is she famous? The better question might be: why would anyone want to emulate this woman in any way? Go figure.

I’ll admit, I haven’t read all of the responses here–just the first few that pointed out the double standard about the media caring that JS is paying her boyfriend’s way, while someone like George Clooney does the same thing and no one notices. But here’s the key difference. George Clooney isn’t running around to every media outlet he can get his hands on to blab about how he has found love and blah blah blah. For Jessica, on the other hand, this is the only way she can get in the news. She’s throwing it in our faces in a desperate attempt to get more attention (and here I am writing about it!). So sure, celebs do that sort of thing. But when you throw in the fact that she could be financially supporting this new guy so that she can run to the media about it, that’s when it gets icky.
