Gwyneth Paltrow sings “Forget You” on ‘Glee’: embarrassing or good?

Granted, from what I’ve seen of Glee, it’s not my cup of tea. Lea Michele’s face bugs me. And I dislike the cheesefest “drama” that goes along with basically being a show based on karaoke (I’m half-joking). But am I supposed to be embarrassed for even watching a few minutes? That’s what happened when I watched this video, below, of Gwyneth Paltrow’s guest appearance on Glee. She’s the substitute teacher, and she breaks into Cee Lo Green’s “F-ck You” – now “Forget You”. It’s…difficult to watch.

Something nice: once again, Goopy voice sounds good. Glee prerecords all of their songs, and while Goopy’s voice is strong, it’s not quite this auto-tuned strong. Something bad: the faces she’s making, the weird way she’s dancing – you know what we’re seeing, right? This is how Goopy sings and dances when she’s alone and pretending to be a rock star. This is Goopy as Gwen Stefani, or someone like that. It’s just so cheesy.

  1. normades says:

She did something to her face, she really looks like Claire Danes now

  2. whitedaisy says:

Oh, for gosh sakes. If her voice is “good”, then you haven’t really heard a talented singer before.
Her voice is thin and she sings without emotion.
    Pass.
And what happened to the great show that was “Glee”?
It has jumped the shark big time.

  3. Embee says:

Agreed, normades. I think it’s the lips. Ugh.

  4. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

I agree, I would not have recognized her.

Also, that was an embarrassing clip.

  5. Happymom says:

I thought she was great-and I admit to being a huge Glee fan!

  6. alejandro says:

The shocking part is her in a bikini. For all those hours working out hardcore with Madonna’s trainer, liquid diets, and goopyness her body does not look that good. SHe may as well have a double cheeseburger.

  7. Anti-icon says:

Embarrassing. I thought she considered herself too good for TV. You know, when she was “all that” in film.

  8. LOVE ANGELINA says:

I know why I don’t like this show…it reminds me of High School Musical. I effing hated High School Musical.

Gwen didn’t sound bad or anything but I am not feeling this at all, period. Its to much like High School Musical. I just plain hated this. Gwen may not have sounded bad but that was painful to watch, it was like being trapped in High School Musical, which ever movie, all over again with my little cousin.

  9. Ycnan says:

Oh I think she was good. But I’m a big Glee fan and I don’t hate Gwen, so I’m looking forward to it. I think if you don’t like Glee it would be hard to enjoy random clips.

  10. Riley says:

    @alejandro: Snap!

  11. W.O.M. says:

Yea, Goopy’s facial expressions are weird. But her voice is strong. However the skirt: embarrassingly short and the pocketing/flap things are ugly.

Musically this is the best version I’ve heard of “F-ck You.” It actually sounds like a SONG, not just a random bunch of words strung together in an angry rant that makes no sense.

  12. original kate says:

that was cringeworthy. it’s bad when you are outdanced by a guy in a wheelchair.

  13. Miss Thang says:

I think she did a great job. She’s an actress not a singer.

  14. melangie says:

I’m off to the Dr.’s. Must be ill- loved the song, loved the Goop-ster

  15. Carrie says:

OK, the first time I just listened to the song while reading another post, and I thought she sounded good and the song was well executed.

Then I decided to watch a little of it, and…the dancing, the facial expressions, none of it is working for her.

  16. Scarlet Vixen says:

“The faces she’s making, the weird way she’s dancing – you know what we’re seeing, right? This is how Goopy sings and dances when she’s alone and pretending to be a rock star.”

Please…cuz a show like Glee doesn’t have a director or choreographer. No wait, they probably bowed down as soon as Queen Goop hit the soundstage and let her do whatever she deigned to gift them with, right?

Kaiser, even you’re giving Goopy too much credit.

  17. malachais says:

goopy sang pretty decent, i’m glad they gave cee-lo green some coverage, he’s awesome. Seems like goopy is trying to keep herself relevant by doing shows, etc. Oh wellz.

  18. Fan? says:

She can sing. The movie Duets was great, and she kept up with Huey Lewis. I liked the clip and I like her.

  19. Rose says:

Oh FFS, it was cute and she can sing. The Gwyn hate is so bloody boring.

  20. jover says:

I’m a glee fan and episodes like this weeks without the celeb guest host eating up scenery are the best; they don’t need celebs to make the show, and this seems like a genuflection before Goopy’s ego.

  21. K-MAC says:

I am giving it to her on this one! She did a great job and actually looked like she was having fun!!! good for her 🙂

  22. Obvious says:

@jover I’m with you. This weeks episode advanced story lines and even though I saw parts of the episode coming since GaGa, I’m not a huge fan of all the guest roles. I like the Stamos arc, he isn’t the center of the show, he has bit parts and makes us giggle and drool and then goes on his merry way. THAT is how the guests should be included.

  23. Raven says:

I was going to say that it doesn’t look like she’s worked out that much, but the more I thought about it, she looks fine. Her arms and midriff are not that defined, much like the actresses on Mad Men. Also, if she can keep up that look, when she gets into her 40’s she’ll avoid the gristle, which we see on people who looked great in their 30’s, but really pushed for that defined look.

I only watched Glee once and don’t like Lea Michele. I liked GP’s singing in Duets, though.

  24. skibunny says:

I like that she’s moving outside of her comfort zone. Watched her on the country music awards and was really impressed. She looked so hot! It must cause old Brad to shed a tear when he sees the one that got away.

  25. Rachel says:

I thought it was great! I am a big Glee fan and an even bigger GOOPy fan…can’t wait for Glee on Tuesday night.

  26. dh says:

someone needs to cut her hair–looks too thin and ratty..voice not bad but overall, I had to turn it on mute as I wondered why she was constantly doing the walk from “Bad”. Im embarrassed I watched it all.

  27. observer says:

Well, this answers the question about whether the fake country accent is why she is unintelligible when she sings. LOL. It’s apparently nothing to do with a fake accent. Girl sings like she has a mouth full of marbles.

  28. Jaxx says:

First, I despise this woman but I have to be fair here, she didn’t suck at the singing part. However, it was very difficult to watch her gyrate around.

  29. Anyaberry says:

This is absolutely painful to watch. Such a good song, what a shame. Thank you for killing it for me, Glee. Forget you.

  30. Djen says:

Why is she in my face every time I turn around, singing? Is there something going on? Is she getting a band together and this is part of the launch, “Gwyneth and the GOOPsters” or some such?

    I’m starting to feel a little paranoid…

  31. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Skibunny you have to be kidding me with that comment.

  32. lol says:

Well at the CMA’s they think she is just so HOT..

Sorry but Country music & I love it but the politics & hypocrites are just way too much. People recieve awards because of there name & who they hang with & tour with not based on there music..

  33. Kimberly says:

    ew!!!

she puts the ass in embarrassing!!

She’s so stiff and really needs to pull the stick out of her ass because it effects her acting skills!!!!

    GLEE SUCKS IN SEASON 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    NOT FUN TO WATCH ANYMORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    QUIT HAVING “GUEST STARS”!!!!!!!!

    THEY SUCK!

  34. Cinderella says:

She did a better job on Glee than she did at the CMAs.

  35. di butler says:

The delusion is strong in some of you…..your standards for dancing and singing are very low if you think the GOOPy is great.

  36. hmm says:

Her voice sounds nasally. I’ll pass on her as a singer. And that appears to be a standard-issue skirt length for all the high school teachers I know too.

  37. Henriette says:

I don’t like her at all. She’s a snotty bitchy and yes, she’s definitely messed with her face and her voice is super-nasal.

But you know what… I do appreciate that she’s trying out all sorts of things that interest her, whether she’s skilled at them or not. Seriously, in a world that tears down all people and especially celebs for taking chances that don’t result in 100% success, good for her for throwing perfectionism out the window and creating a shitty blog because it makes her happy and singing on Glee even tho’ she’s mediocre… Makes me wish I could be less embarrassed to try things I suck at.

  38. bubbles says:

she definitely has a couple of tricks up her sleeves… whether they are good ones is yet to be determined.

  39. Adrien says:

I’m disappointed that it’s GOOD. Yes it’s autotuned, but it’s good. Then again, Gwyneth is one of the few actresses who can really hit the notes.

  40. GT says:

I loved it and I loved her in Duets. Why does everyone have to come down on her all the time?

  41. justathought says:

I do believe Gwyn is reinventing herself. But is this a good thing?

  42. Aurelia says:

Errr, ya, the glee thingie was pretty hideous. Agree on the unneccesary facial expressions and the gross, long, thin, stringy, peroxide mess of a hair do. Ok, when your hair style starts to look exactly like Donatella Versace’s, you have true problemos in your life. Gad, and it was just starting to look nice again when she cut it off into a long bob. I wonder if that ridiculous film Country Strong will be awarded the Razzie for 2010? I can’t take it seriously.

  43. heathen says:

I think she did fine and the choreography isn’t any cheesier than is typical for Glee. (And I can’t stand GOOP, so that is a huge compliment comming from me).

  44. Tori says:

I thought it was a great Glee performance. Love the skirt. Wanna get one too. Why all then Gwen hate? It’s probably gonna be a cute episode…

  45. Sandy says:

    @Kimberly
Relax. The caps lock thing is so Kanye

  46. Natalie says:

Have none of you watched the rest of Glee? It’s ALL cheesy. That’s why it’s so great haha. And it looks like this was supposed to be a have fun, fool-around number anyways and that’s what she did. I think she did awesome, especially for an actress trained as an actress, not a performer. So just enjoy it for what it is and stop taking yourselves so seriously.

  47. Missfit says:

Glee is actually a good show….TOO MUCH singing of coarse for ONE episode…but hey, it’s a musical show, but sometimes too much singing gets to me and I’ll skip the parts, lol. It also depends on what song is being sung…I’m like…(that’s a good song, I’ll listen to it) 😉 I am not crazy about the way Rachel sings, she’s too whiny…I think Mercedes sings better…I love the soulful voices better. On that one episode of this girl named Sunshine…she out sang all of them…I really loved her…too bad she was only for one show. :/ I LOVED the Rocky Horror one, it was awesome, because I love that movie. Even if I was one of the Glee members, I would have gotten expelled from school long ago from a slushee in the face, for hitting the jocks in the face. lol

  48. Wicked1 says:

She sings well. Though some people here are saying she sounds flat, or flat out rubbish – who in todays music industry can actually sing well? There are only a handful of ‘artists’ that can sing well, too many no talents making good money off of the business, and Paltrow is by no means at the bottom of that barrel.

I understand the site is “celebitchy” – but why are the readers so snippy? You’d swear Paltrow owed you money with the way you’re all going on.

  49. Michelle says:

Someone said “she’s an actress, not a singer.” How come her singing was better than her acting? She’s not likeable or genuine enough to pull this skit off. Fail.

  50. hoganbcmj says:

This number is no more or less cringe-worthy than any other on Glee. I think Paltrow has a nice voice, actually, and it’s not nearly as thin as Janet’s or Britney’s, so why all the criticism? If this kind of cheesy dancing and singing isn’t your thing, it’s not the fault of Gwyneth; that’s just what the show is all about, so probably Glee isn’t your thing. If I was going to criticize anything, it would be her flat, thin-looking hair.

  51. luna says:

I agree with the above comment that people’s standards of what classifies as good singing is pretty low….all I could hear was the autotune. Yes, many “singers” use autotune, but I think the issue here is that the original recording of the song is very soulful. Doesn’t match.

I tend to stay away from Gwenyth gossip because people either tend to overrate her beauty and talent (Lainey’s constant and often illogical fawning over her gets really annoying and is very eye-roll-worthy) or they just overdo their ragging on her (she underwhelms me but I don’t think she’s as bad as she’s made out to be sometimes).

Kudos to her for having the guts to try something different and not looking like she’s half-assing it, but I was embarrassed for her watching this video. Something about it seemed too forced and stiff for the light-hearted way they’re all dancing and singing.

  52. Poodlemom says:

I am so proud of her! I thought she looked great…she sounded great…and I loved her skirt and sweater combo! It was a great song…and I think she is multi talented! I would now like to see her do something with her husband!

  53. gabs says:

okay. I give Goopy a lot of credit for doing this. It took guts. I mean, she knows people were gonna be snotty about her. Im biased. I like Gwynie

  54. Amy says:

I like her song. The lady can sing!

  55. Mairead says:

It was much better than I thought it would be 😯

(In fact when I heard the song – before realising it was the Goop – I thought it was Kurt mixing it up)

And I can’t hate on her styling. I used to wear something very very similar in my younger, leaner days. 10 years ago.

  56. Jeri says:

I’m a big Glee fan but not a Gwynnie fan. That’s embarrassing. She looks like she’ trying to be 20 yrs younger with her mannerisms and short skirt. Her hair looks awful, no body, and she’s whipping it around like the Smith girl. (I whip my hair).

Looking good shouldn’t take so much effort. Maybe it’s all the young faces surrounding her.

  57. spmarne says:

I think this song seemed good for her character, but watch All That Jazz, she’s too cheesy, and then she effing KILLS on Umbrella/Singin’ In the Rain!

    Often skeptical Glee fan,

    I liked it.

  58. leyton4eva says:

where can i download her song?
her version is way better than cee-loo.

  59. Oleee says:

Oh, I loved her singing in Glee. True, this 2nd year is just a shadow of the 1st, but I still like it a lot.

If you don’t like Glee, I don’t mind, but sounds silly, that you don’t like it, and still watch it, and you take so much energy to comment, that you don’t like it.

I do like Glee, and I watch!
    I want Gwyneth back!

  60. blackwidow says:

Well she is not a singer, she’s an actress…For somebody who’s not a singer she did well… not like she can go ahead and make a career of it but she did well.
