Walking Dead season 2 not coming out until October (spoilers for past episodes)

walkingdeadheader
Let me start out by saying that I am a squeamish person and am not a fan of the horror genre at all. I’ve been watching Walking Dead on AMC, though, and cannot get enough of that show. It’s a gritty, compelling drama about a group of survivors after a zombie apocalypse. The special effects can be incredibly gruesome to the point where I cover the screen or my eyes. The performances and story are so well done that it’s worth it to me to watch this excellent show, even if I end up unable to sleep afterwards. It stars lovely British actor Andrew Lincoln as the sheriff’s deputy protagonist, and you might know him from Love, Actually as the guy who fell in love with Keira Knightley’s character. The show is based on a weekly comic book series of the same name that first came out in 2003.

Mild spoilers for past episodes below
On Sunday, episode three aired and we got to know the characters at the survivor’s camp. There was a kind of “Lost” feel to last week’s show in terms of the small community. The plot didn’t seem as tight this week in that they glossed over some important details, but overall this is an incredible show that has a movie feel to it. It’s developed by the director of The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, Frank Darabont.

Anyway I was recently dismayed to learn that there are only six episodes this entire season, meaning that we have just three more to look forward to. The next season of Walking Dead isn’t coming out until next October! In the interim I’ll be able to go out in public without imagining that crowds are zombies, at least. (Does this happen to anyone else who watches the show?) What’s more is that Breaking Bad isn’t coming back until the damn summer!

Exclu: Most Walking Dead fans know there’s only six episodes in this first season. I know, the season is half finished even though it feels like it’s just getting started.

But here’s what you didn’t know, or perhaps only feared: Sources say AMC isn’t likely to launch the 13-episode second season until next October.

The reason? Fearfest. AMC’s annual horror movie marathon served as a perfect promotional platform to ramp up interest for The Walking Dead, which also took advantage of the higher audience levels during the fall (something not all cable shows can pull off given the barrage of broadcast shows airing at the same time — which is why most cable dramas run during the summer).

Plus, AMC has already pushed Breaking Bad from March to the summer, and has Mad Men airing in the summer as usual, and at some point has to squeeze in the premiere of its new original series, The Killing. Combined with Walking Dead, that’s four shows to air next year, the most the network has ever had, and cable networks tend to spread out their premieres so they can properly promote each one.

Now, the October plan is not final, and there probably won’t be a firm premiere date for awhile — heck, the second season hasn’t even started production yet. But the current strategy is for another October roll out.

Some silver lining: Frank Darabont is expected to write and direct another episode next year.

Note to AMC: You have to give us more of what we love before you can spring new shows on us. Who am I kidding? I love AMC shows so much that I’ll watch this new show and probably get into it too.

If you’d like to watch Walking Dead, you can see the first episode for free on Hulu if you’re in the US. All episodes are available on iTunes.

Awwww Damnnit even you guys like this show. Now I have to watch it and I love zombies and was trying to watch it. However I remember in the first episode there was this hella boring conversation between these two guys sitting in a car and it went on and on, it just didn’t hold my attention as much as Boardwalk Empire has.

I am gonna watch all the episodes I missed tonight. I wanna be in the know!!!

  2. LittleDeadGirl says:

Love Love LOVE this show! I’ve been telling everyone to watch it. I’m so upset that there are only 3 more episodes and than we have to wait such a long time for more but to be honest I think it’s because they are taking their time to do it right and I’d rather take this slow pace than have them churn out 22 episodes of crap in a month like most other tv shows.

  3. Dorothy#1 says:

This show is right up my alley. why have I never heard of it before???

  4. Praise St. Angie! says:

great show! awesomely gruesome…or gruesomely awesome?

either way, if you like zombies movies (or even if you don’t, like Celebitchy) it’s SO good.

Basic cable does have some great shows these days. between AMC and FX, I’m loving TV!

  5. Sarah says:

I LOVE this show. I’m sad there’s only 3 more episodes this season. I didn’t know that ๐Ÿ™

  6. rkintn says:

This is an AWESOME show! What is the deal with these stations taking so long between seasons? F/X does it with Sons of Anarchy and Justified and, of course, AMC has done it with Breaking Bad. I think they are going to end up shooting themselves in the foot. I was a die hard Breaking Bad fan but after such a long period between seasons, I lost interest. A show can recover from weak story lines and mistakes if there are more episodes and closer together seasons. To take so long between seasons and with smaller seasons, they really have to be spot on and make no mistakes for the show to last.

  7. Jezi says:

I’m addicted to this show. I even dreamt last night that I was a survivor and zombies were walking amongst us. I started devouring all the food in a supermarket that we stumbled upon to get supplies…lol. Go figure! Anyway, I’m sad we have to wait so long to see what happens. I can’t wait for the husband to find out about his slut wife…haha!!!!! Anyway, it’s a good, good show.

  8. JenWind says:

LOVE< LOVE< LOVE this show. It is so well done, both story wise, and zombie wise. I’m a huge fan of the zombie genre, so this is just what I need to add to my collection of truley gruesome shows to watch, true blood included. I have to admit though that I have a hard time walking around the house late at night after watching, and I have never had a zombie movie affect me like that before. Just something truely creepy about the idea behind this show.

I can’t wait to see what the next couple of weeks bring us!!

  9. lena80 says:

Love this show, and I enjoy how it is much more than we have to run from the zombies plot line. It takes a more this is happening and how are we going to handle it and work with one another and survive this sh** side…if that makes any sense lol

  10. Jezi says:

@JenWind you’re not alone on that one, I felt the same thing walking in my house with no lights. It really freaks me out.

  11. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

So upset they are not showing more until next Oct!

Also, Why push my Breaking Bad to the summer???? BOOOOOOO!! I LOVE That show… Damn.

  12. Eve says:

I LOVE this show! Love it! I’m a huge fan of Frank Daranbont and I knew he would do a good job, but it’s even better than I thought it would be.

  13. Sandy says:

Love the show but AMC has the laziest damn “seasons” of any network ever. Even Mad Men. How is three months a season? Arrghh!

  14. Trillion says:

Angelina: Unfortunately that terrible, clunky opening scene is sort of an indicator of more clunky dialogue that plagues the show. I’ll keep watching it because I love zombies, but it’s got many flaws that drive me and my husband crazy. The zombies are mostly fantastic looking and the story line is fascinating but the writing and direction is often pretty bad and the characters are super ham fisted and one dimensional. I hope they don’t just rely on the zombie factor to make the show work. It’s got potential.

  15. krissy_kitty says:

Thanks for posting that link Kaiser! Thankyouthankyouthankyou!!!…lol!
I have been dying to watch Walking Dead.. I haven’t been able to find it on-line so I have been VERY bummed that I haven’t been able to watch it.. Again thanks Kaiser… You rock!

  16. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Trillion I am actually watching it now, was gonna wait until later, but I really wanna see what the hype was about. I noticed all the things you were talking about in terms of the acting and some of the scenes of dialogue but I really liked the first episode. Its not bad at all. The zombies are extremely well done, like the legless one was awesome. I felt super bad for that horse though. I am watching episode #2 and its sooo action packed. I am liking it.

  17. scotchy says:

i too love this show, really love this show.
i am a huge fan of the comic series, but this is insane, i had no idea there were only 6 episodes in the season, that seems like such a rip off.
    argh

  18. Francesca says:

I love the comics, and it seems like the tv series follows quite closely the comics plot, which is great!
I cannot sleep after watching the episodes though. At least for a couple of nights, my nightmares are infested with zombies, and can’t be left in the darkness alone!!
    What a wimpy kid!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  19. Devon says:

This show is great! It took me a few sittings to get through the first episode since I HATE horror films. I had to stop it a few times at he point where he is in the hospital and finds he locked room of zombies…and their hands reaching through…*shudder*. But once I figured that the lead wasn’t going to die (how can they hav the show without him?) I was able to watch the whole thing. There are points when I’m screaming “holy sh*t!” at the screen and I love it!

  20. Amy says:

The first episode was stellar (and I’m afraid seemed to set the bar too high). The two subsequent episodes have been incrementally less effective. I will keep watching however because I’ve fallen madly in love with Andrew Lincoln. October is too far away!

  21. Andria says:

I love the “clunky” dialogue! The characters in this show are developed in a way that most characters in scary shows aren’t.

  22. Majosha says:

My husband is a comic book geek, and we’re both staunchly pro zombie, so we’ve really been enjoying this show. I was kind of put off by the fact that the sheriff’s wife hopped in the sack with his best friend so quickly (at least, that’s how it seemed in TV time), but maybe I’m just being overly judgmental.

Also, while I’m supremely annoyed that “Breaking Bad” has been gone for so long, it could stay off the air for another five years, and I’d still be waiting anxiously for its return. God, I love that damn show so much it’s ridiculous.

  23. MissyA says:

I’m a total nerd, so as a girl, I spent more time playing Resident Evil than I did playing outside. (I know, so sad!)

We’re very pro-zombie in the Missy household – to the point that my best friend and I consider our marathon training as “Zombie Apocalypse Training”. (Zombies don’t care if you’re getting tired. . . run girl, run!)

That being said, I haven’t seen Walking Dead yet, but I’m looking forward to downloading the season (don’t judge! I don’t have a tv!) and watching it all in one fell swoop. It’s less scary if you’re exposed to six hours of zombies at once, right? Right?

I’ve got to go work on my cardio.

  24. launicaangelina says:

All I need to say is I freakin love it. I want more!!!!

  25. Jezi says:

@Angelina I also felt sad for the horse. He didn’t deserve to die ๐Ÿ™

@Majosha I felt the same about the wife. What was it 2 weeks before she started with the bf. Geez!! Yeah she’s really heartbroken.

  26. Jeri says:

I’m hooked but I have learned to never let this be my last show of the evening. I get freaked and wonder what’s walking around outside and jump at every little thing. I haven’t been affected like this by other scary shows. I have to distract myself with another show after so I don’t freak.

Too bad about the long gap. V showed just one ep and then came on several months later and now for some dumb reason The Closer is broken up with half in the early fall, long gap, then the rest months later. It sucks and pisses me off, if the show wasn’t so good I’d quit watching in protest.

  27. Ph0sPh0r says:

Small correction, you said weekly comic series, it’s actually monthly – too bad too, since it is incredible. I could not stop reading them once I started and I am very, very picky. I noticed a few holes and small set snafus that irk me, but overall I am very excited about the series (and they are related to the writers adding content over the comic). I have my wife, sister and many friends hooked now. After each episode I talk to many about the show – all of them give glowing remarks. Thank goodness for the execs making this comic shine in TV format!

  28. Beau says:

The wife & best friend? Bad news, there. But I got the impression he’d been in the coma for two, three months (something the black father said in episode one), am I wrong about that? I understand how the wife felt scared and desperate, all that (ESPECIALLY after the conversation between her and the BF end of episode 3). But still! Yeah, that sex scene made me MAD!!

  29. Confuzzle says:

This show is hilarious; every stereotype possible for characters, predictable plots, bad dialogue. I laugh and laugh and laugh when I watch it.

  30. Camille says:

I hope this shows up in NZ eventually, I really want to watch it. I <3 zombies ๐Ÿ˜€ .

  31. Heather says:

Love the show, read the comic books a couple years ago. I cannot wait a year for a new seaon. ๐Ÿ™

  32. lasherola says:

Is it just me?? I just can’t stand the young Jake Lamotta guy. Can’t ignore that nose, smarmy attitude and creepy staring. I have adored Lincoln since Love, Actually. ๐Ÿ™‚

  33. Amy says:

Love love this show, I am not a fan of bloody gory horror films but I watch this show for its compelling comedic characters and irrestible spine-tingling action. Number one tv show hands down.
