Who made the finals of Dancing with the Stars? (Spoilers)

Holy Hell! That’s all I can say about last night’s Dancing with the Stars results. Despite being at or near the bottom of the leaderboard for the entire season, Bristol Palin is one of the final three, while Brandy went home. It’s shocking, but it’s also sort of understandable. While Brandy is far and away the better dancer, she is also a professional performer. Bristol has had an incredible learning curve from Day One all the way to the finals. I think a lot of the viewers were rewarding Bristol for the improvement and the increased confidence she has shown throughout the season.

Kyle Massey is also in the finals. He has a ton of personality and being on this show is certainly going to jumpstart his career. He’s only 19 and there are already comparisons to Will Smith.

Jennifer Grey was a gimme. She scored 60 out of 60. The judges fawned over her so much it turned me off a little. I love an underdog, and Kyle is that underdog.

I’m not surprised Bristol is in the finals, but I thought it was going to be Brandy, Jennifer and Bristol.

An interesting fact from Monday’s show: both Brandy and Jennifer Grey were in car accidents in which the other drivers were killed. Brandy’s crash was in 2006, and she was reportedly not at fault. Jennifer’s was in Ireland in 1987 with then boyfriend Matthew Broderick. Both women talked about how the accidents affected them, but it seemed in bad taste to me to talk about the accidents on the show. No matter who was at fault, people died. I’m sure those people’s loved ones don’t feel any better knowing those car accidents made these celebrities strong enough to compete on a TV reality show.

OK, I know this is going to be controversial, but here goes: The Tea Party is voting for Bristol Palin. TV Guide reports that several Tea Party websites are encouraging people to vote for Bristol.

She’s well-liked on set, a hard worker and has earned high praise for holding her own as the only cast member without performing experience. But Palin, daughter of former vice presidential candidate Sarah, is also the only competitor tied to a media savvy politician who chosen Tea Party candidates made an impressive showing on Election Day. On websites such as MotivationTruth.com and Consevatives4Palin.com, they weren’t just stumping for politicians….But if Palin is getting a boost from conservatives for the second half of her scores, she’s not doing the stumping herself. “I have no idea if the Tea Party is voting for me,” she tells TV Guide Magazine. “I think people are voting for me because I’m a normal person, and they can see I’m improving.”

[TV Guide, print edition, November 15-21, 2010]

Both of the Tea Party websites listed in the TV Guide article are still including voting information for Bristol Palin on Dancing with the Stars.

I’m pretty amazed how quickly the show drew me in. Two weeks ago I’d have said I’d rather have chopsticks driven into my eyeballs than watch Dancing with the Stars. Last night, there I was cheering for Kyle.

The finals of Dancing with the Stars airs next Monday on ABC. Here are the performances from this week.

  1. Long time lurker here:

I agree with the TV guide article. People are voting according to their politics and not by the talent they see. Also Jezebel.com mentions how the conservatives found a glitch in the voting system of DWTS.

This whole fiasco has killed the show for me.

  2. Po says:

Ok, I don’t watch the show but essentially what you are saying is that Brandy was better than Bristol but Brandy is the one that went home? Sounds kind of sucky to me.

  3. Donna says:

It says winners will be based on judges’ votes and viewer votes. Plain and simple – she got more viewer votes. I’ve watched this show since its beginning and have watched the process. It is flawed – based on popularity. There is always someone getting sent home that should have stayed. If they want the best dancer to always win, they need to change the rules. And they are the ones who hired BP to dance. What did DWTS thing was going to happen.

  4. Westcoaster says:

The odds are pretty good Bristol Palin will win DWTS. Then watch within weeks how ABC and the producers of DWTS have decided to “change” the way people can vote for the dancers

  5. guesty says:

would love to see kyle win.

since this is a popularity contest as opposed to a talent competition…bristol will prolly take the trophy.

  6. mel says:

Ditto Donna, this is a popularity contest and Bristol is the most popular dancer. I do believe the rules need to be modified.

  7. simple says:

America did not like Brandy. Period.

  8. Marjalane says:

Every week that bimbo Brook Burke sounds like a broken record instructing us to “Be sure and vote for your favorite”. Not “vote for the best dancer”. Guess Brandy wasn’t anyone’s favorite.

  9. Lizzard says:

I don’t watch this show- but I’m surprised Brandy brought up her 2006 accident where someone was killed. I could have sworn she was at fault for that and the family sued her, but maybe I’m thinking of a different accident. If she mentioned this accident on Monday night, maybe that’s why she didn’t get enough votes.

  10. Dancing says:

I don’t really watch the show because to me is is soooo boring.. but I do follow it the day afters. I don’t like Brandy or Jennifer and I haven’t since the start of the show. When I heard the line up I was hoping people would be smart and vote the dancers off right off the bat and that is why I would never ever get invested in this show. Its never ever fair when they get people who have dancing experience in their background, and Jennifer and Brandy can sit there all day defending how little dancing experience they have but they are clearly doing better then the others.. Just like the season the pussy cat doll dancer was on. If I voted for people on this show you can bet your botton dollar it would not be for Jennifer or Brandy. It would have been for the others. And I personally like underdogs too. Sooo Go Kyle and Bristol.. I really really hope one of you wins and that Jennifer goes home next!!! And how about from now on trying to not stack the deck by recruiting people with dancing backgrounds!!

  11. vic says:

Thanks for the refreshingly unbiased post. This show is about popularity and the most improved dancers. Jennifer Gray and Brandy are both trained and spoke about car accidents involving death. It is unbelievably stupid to think the Tea Party can rig a national contest like this. They may have more votes but rigging? Same B.S. on American Idol a few years ago.

  12. Delta Juliet says:

Yeah, Bristol is the only one who isn’t a performer. SHE ALSO ISN’T A STAR!!!! Her only claim to fame is getting knocked up in high school while her mother was involved in a presidential campaign. THAT’S IT!

She is a horrible dancer, shows no emotion at all and I’m sick of her “I’m just a single working mom” story. She makes a ton of money and has plenty of help. GO HOME!

    *rant over*

  13. Chrissy says:

Regardless of politics, I think it’s great that a professional performer isn’t in the finals. It seems unfair when you have people who aren’t professional dancers competing against people who have been dancing for years.

  14. Maritza says:

People like the underdog that is why they are voting for Bristol. Brandy danced really good but she was a bit pretentious, people don’t like that. Why do you think Donny Osmond won? Because people loved him. Jennifer will have to win the peoples heart if she wants to be the winner. I personally think she deserves to win.

  15. Sunnyjyl says:

I thought it was in poor taste to bring up the accidents as well.
Although she had a good night last night, I have found it painful to watch how poorly Bristol performs this season. I have also watch from the beginning. There has been something really weird going on this season. The pros have been steeming and seething behind their smiles. Something hinky is going on with the judging, and presentation of the dancers. I think the producers knew Brandy’s ‘package’ would sink her with the voting audience.

  16. annaloo says:

How’s that “American Exceptionalism” working out for you?

    What a lame situation. Truly.

  17. Rachel says:

Hey Seriously, if you were so smart, you would have noticed that earlier in the post, Sammie mentioned that she felt viewers were voting for Bristol to reward her for her improvement and increased confidence. The bit about the Tea Party was directly from TV Guide. Before you go jumping down people’s throats, maybe you should take the time to process what you’re reading. And personally, I DO think the only reason people are voting for her is political. She has NO talent, and as someone already mentioned, the only thing she’s known for is being teh daughter of a controversial politician.

  18. Wholesome1 says:

Clearly, it’s a popularity contest and not a dance competition. Saying that Bristol is winning for her dancing brings to mind the story The Emperor’s New Clothes.

  19. MonicaBee says:

I have never watched DWTS in my life, but I’ve been watching the clips that y’all have posted here.

I am utterly unimpressed with Bristol. Her dances are okay, but nothing super impressive.

Jennifer Grey dances like I expected her to dance… like a professional would.

This Kyle Massey kid, though, is incredible. He’s adorable and he and his partner look great together!

When it comes to brass tacks, the real competition should be between Bristol & Kyle (since JG has so much prior dance experience). And between Bristol & Kyle, Kyle wins. Hands down.

  20. J says:

Regardless of whether the contestants have been dancing for years or not, this is the first time I can think of that a contestant has made it to the finals and is only a mediocre dancer. Palin has improved a lot, but that should only take someone to somewhere in the middle of the competition. Why should someone win just because they have no dancing experience, if they still can’t dance.

I personally hated Joanna Krupa with a passion (whatever season she was on), but I could easily understand how she made it to the finals.

  21. Obvious says:

@Lizard. She was found not at fault but the family did sue her. Being a celeb means that people will want to take you. Look at Eva Longoria-she’s being sued for that accident a few weeks ago which the cops said the other guy was a t fault. and he’s still suing.

I thought it was in poor taste to bring it up. but the facts remain she was part of a multi-car pile up and she was neither the first nor last car in that accident.

  22. Bella Mosley says:

Regardless of what they do the system is skewed.
They put people who have no dancing experience against those who do and that isn’t fair.

Personally, I prefer to see people who are not dancers.

This season I find Jennifer to be the perfection especially after hearing she hasn’t danced since Dirty Dancing (again that is an individual opinion) but I don’t vote so . . . . .

I do enjoy Bristol (even tho not fond of her mom) as to me she represents the everyday person the most. Someone w/o celebrity savvy.

I have read and also heard from friends they didn’t like Brandy due to her extreme competitive nature, divaness and petulance. Personally, I don’t know because I record and fast forward thru everything except the dancing.

I think unless you have no heart – just seeing Kyle would make you happy.

  23. Amanda says:

Did you see ths tory about Bristol and Piper taking to facebook to verbally attack (using homophobic slurs- like the word f*ggot) a classmate of Piper’s (I think) who posted a staus update critical of Sarah Palin’s new show? WTF.
They then accused the kid of being jealous of “all their families success). Gross.

I love watching Jennifer Gray on this show. She is over 50, and I think is really gotten beautiful. I hope she wins.

  24. Maritza says:

@J – On season 9 Joanna Krupa and Derek Hough did not win, Donny Osmond won that time. I personally thought Joanna was better, but it goes to show you that it depends basically on who the voters prefer not necessarily who dances better.

  25. Amanda says:

I also think the tea party angle is kind of full of drama.

This same thing happened with Kelly Osborn and previously Ty Murray. Ty Murray REALLY couldn’t dance, but people loved him. Kelly was a little better than Ty, but still in the “can’t dance” club.

I don’t think this is a unique phenomenon for Bristol- people get attached to an underdog.

@annaloo- LOL at “American Exceptionalism” at work. American Mediocrity seems to be trumping American Exceptionalism, here. Good thing it’s just a dance show.

  26. Cookie says:

I agree with the above poster who commented on the inevitable change in judging and voting if Bristol Palin wins this thing. They hate her because of her mother, which is stupid, but whatever.

She seems like a sweet, harmless girl. She’s not the best, but she’s fine. A hell of a lot better than I would do!

Again, the network will be MORTIFIED if Bristol wins. They will change everything to be sure someone with any links to an outspoken conservative never is able to win again!

  27. potatopeel says:

Rules needs to be changed so that when it comes down to the final four couples – only the judges votes should be considered at that point. Too many times, with this show, it has been the most popular dancer who wins – not the best. I don’t even bother to watch any more because of this voting issue and the people that they’re getting to be on – ridiculous.

  28. Tomas says:

The real story here is WHY ARE THE DWTS RATINGS DOWN?? It was beat by House in the 8pm timeslot on Monday, the semi-final night! You can see from an overwhelming negative reaction from people who actually watch the show that something is going on with the voting. I don’t put it past Sarah and her ignorant teabaggers to sandbag the voting system. The big issue for ABC is gonna happen when this becomes the least watched finale EVER!

  29. Anna says:

The Teabaggers can’t even admit that Bristol is a weak dancer. She moves at half the speed of the others. Mark drags her across the floor, and pushes her hips around. Her “solo” consisted of her lifting her skirt.

  30. Uzi says:

Booting Brandy and Maks was SO WRONG! I loathe Sarah Palin and the Tea Party, but I put aside my prejudices and rooted for Bristol simply because she was an underdog with no dance or performance experience. However, once it’s finals time the three best contestants should be “rewarded,” and this week was Bristol’s time to go. Brandy was my favorite, but now I’m switching my support, and votes, to Kyle and Lacey; she’s never won (Derek and Mark have), and he’s always given 100%, has improved steadily throughout the competition and is “Mr. Entertainment.” GO TEAM KYLE AND LACEY!

  31. Ron says:

They never announce any percentages etc for voting, so really, the producers of the show can do whatever they want. Seems having Miss Abstinence 2008 on has created alot of press. I find the show pretty boring now.

  32. TF says:

The results from last night made me realize just what a joke dancing with the stars is. Bristol Palin can’t dance
and Brandy can. How unfortunate that even the supposed entertainment in America is political. I will not be watching dancing with the stars anymore, because it is obviously not about dancing. what happened to the best dancer winning? shame on the judges and the TV hosts and writers, perhaps you need to change some of the rules and bring integrity back to the show.

  33. Mine says:

The show is about dancing. It should have been about dancing.
I do believe the tea party unfairly sandbagged the votes. Why was Sarah Palin all over the show? Too disgusting. So done with DWTS.

  34. Blondie says:

Regardless of who Bristol’s mom is…she sucks! Her partner drags her around the floor like a tree limb. She shows no emotion. She’s just…not entertaining. I too love an underdog. However, she has not improved since she’s been on the show. Each week is familiarly bad. And I hate how Sarah Palin keeps showing up in the rehearsal clips. Same thing with all the ‘Alaska’ hoodies. Like, we get it-your mom is Sarah Palin.

My dislike for Bristol is not political. (Though I do think her mom is an ass-hat.) The show is called Dancing with The Stars. Bristol is not a star and she sure is hell isn’t dancing.

Also, for those saying Brandy is an experienced dancer. It’s not true. I’ve been a fan for years and she’s never done much dancing in any of her shows or videos. She mostly had dancers and would join in for a half step here and there. But she’s never done a significant amount of choreographed dancing. So, an experienced dancer she is not.

I am, and will continue to root for Kyle.

  35. flourpot says:

“Her “solo” consisted of her lifting her skirt.”

Which is why she’s famous, right? Hey – it worked once…. 😛

  36. di butler says:

@Amanda Not a Palin apologist, but you do know that 4chan is the one who made up the Facebook postings pretending to be the Palin girls, right? TMZ reported it, like they often do wrongly, and now it’s everywhere.

I was for Brandy. She did act very bitchy and Maks is a total asshat, but I really liked watching her dance. She was found not at fault for the traffic accident, but there have been many, many rumors she was on the phone at the time. The Matthew Broderick wreck was 100% his fault, he was driving in the wrong lane, and he got by scott free. Of course, this was pre-internets back when things actually became public and died out within a couple of days. Adding to that, it was in another country. I think The Brisket has greatly improved, she’s not great, but way better.

Plus, it’s just a tv show. Who’ll remember who won in a month from now?

  37. sara says:

    get over it
    she’s getting more votes
    deal with it

  38. Katie says:

Is it actually news that tea party people are voting for Palin? Of course they are, otherwise she would have been voted off a long time ago. She’s a terrible dancer. She’s improved, but is still terrible. I think it’s funny that tea party people are actually looking at getting Bristol this far when she doesn’t deserve it as some kind of victory. It’s a tv dance show.

  39. jc126 says:

    Brandy got ROBBED.

  40. tango says:

Tomas – DWTS got more viewers than House on Monday night.

    http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2010/11/16/monday-finals-mike-how-i-met-your-mother-up/72354

And there’s not a voting glitch that just benefits Bristol. Any voter can do the same exact thing to vote for any dancer they like best. So if Kyles fans or Jennifers fans also multi-vote, which is totally legal per DWTS rules, then they will benefit too.

  41. eternalcanadian says:

For the life of me I cannot understand how or why Bristol made it and Brandy with a score of 30 (one of the highest on Monday) from the judges didn’t.

  42. LolaBella says:

People need to realize that DWTS is NOT a talent show, it’s a popularity contest.

Most viewers are going to vote for who they like the most, not who ‘deserves to stay because they are the best dancer’.

I learned that lesson the hard way with American Idol when Adam Lambert lost.

Sucks, but dems 😉 the breaks.

Also, I think there is a backlash because there are so many ‘professional’ dancers this season, so people are voting for Bristol as a underdog; someone who isn’t a pro, but is trying her best.

  43. Lanette says:

I WON’T BE WATCHIN ANYMORE…no need to at this point.

Brandy she should keep her head up because she knows what is up.

  44. jc126 says:

#36, Bristol apologized for what Willow said, and now Willow’s account has been deleted.

  45. ab says:

wow. this is a tv show. brandy acted like an entitled twit, she was annoying, people didn’t like her and ‘they’ get a vote. people like bristol and kyle better. this isn’t the olympics, it’s a cardboard mirror ball throphy. it is a personality contest. i grew up with brandy as a singer and liked her songs, watching her on this show, however, i said to my mum, ‘she is really bothering me, why is this?’ and my mum said, ‘because she acts entitled.’ it didn’t sit well. on another very nutty note, there were at least 2 911 calls because people shot there televisions after the results… for the love of pete!

  46. Pirouette says:

If Bristol Palin wins Dancing with the Stars, I will lever watch this show again. I should’ve known better.

  47. carolyn says:

In the past i have really enjoyed the show now not so much. i think it is more about about sarah palin she shows up more an more.Everyone knows Bristol will win she can’t dance. I think michael was not treated right.Maybe next season you all will chose the stars better.{If Everyone Dosen’t Stop Watching It}.Please Don’t Put Sarah On It.PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE?

  48. sister says:

If the show is a popularity contest and did not require talent, it should be called ” Dancing With Amatures” Tea Party members be honest if you can. Why don’t you admit that you did not vote for Bristol because she was the underdog. You were trying to make a statement. You say, you did not like Brandy because she was a DIVA, most actors are divas. It is a race issue but you will not face that fact because you could not look yourselves in the mirror if you did. You have turned a good show into a disgrace. I thought that tea baggers were suppose to be christians and for the good of the people according to you philosophy. I remember another group in my day that said the same thing why they were hanging innocent people, the KKK.
The best way to show the country we will not tolerate this kind of hatred is to boycott this show.
