No one wants to see Katie Holmes on Broadway

Katie Holmes can’t get no respect. Okay that joke doesn’t really work. But it sure is the truth. Katie hasn’t gotten much attention for her acting career in recent years. She is, at best, an okay actress. If it weren’t for marrying Tom Cruise, she wouldn’t exactly be memorable. Tepid. That’s the word I was searching for.

But Katie is still a big name, regardless of the reason. Which made Broadway producers think it was a good idea to sign her star in “All My Sons.” Unfortunately for them, it appears theater-goers care more about talent than a big name – they’ve barely been able to sell tickets to the show.

“Where are all the Scientologists? Don’t they want to see her?” jokes one person, who requested anonymity for fear that the followers of L. Ron Hubbard would hunt him down and make him read all 10 volumes of “Mission Earth.”

Ticket brokers and group sales agents, who at one point thought Holmes would be this season’s Julia Roberts – who pretty much sold out “Three Days of Rain” in One Day of Rain – say interest in the Holmes show is nil. “I bought 1,000 tickets to the show,” says one broker. “I still have them.” The advance for “All My Sons,” which opens in September, is said to be less than $1 million.

Holmes, meanwhile, is in the public eye only because she’s Mrs. Tom Cruise. [She] is also up against a troubled economy, which, several ticket brokers say, is starting to take its toll on Broadway. “People aren’t shelling out $110 for a play anymore,” says a broker. “It doesn’t matter who’s in it.”

Backstage at “All My Sons,” the buzz is that the cast has been forced to sign confidentiality agreements. The Scientology minders in charge of Holmes apparently don’t want any press they can’t control.

[From the New York Post]

The Post focuses quite a bit on how successful Nicole Kidman was in her 1998 run on Broadway in “The Blue Room,” noting that she “she set the town on fire.” Of course she also took her clothes off for the show – and Holmes is keeping hers tightly buttoned.

The New York Times Magazine also points out that the producers have made a critical error promoting the show. They have only talked about Katie Holmes in all of their promotions – completely failing to mention that the play also stars John Lithgow, Patrick Wilson, and Dianne Wiest. Perhaps if they’d bother to mention their well respected Broadway vets, more people would be willing to shell out the cash.

It’s probably not fair to blame the whole thing on Katie Holmes, her acting skills, or the bad publicity her husband brings to the whole affair. And there’s a chance she’ll get great reviews come September. Failing that, Holmes could do what someone suggested in the Post article to compete with Kidman; “I think if she takes off her clothes, she may catch up.”

  1. Syko says:

Have you noticed she is starting to get really bad posture from the constant straining to not tower over her tiny little husband?

I used to think she was really cute. Now, not so much, and that little man always hanging on her doesn’t add much to the view.

  2. geronimo says:

Quelle surprise. 🙄 What screwed-up promotion! John Lithgow and Dianne Wiest would surely sell tickets. They must be really pissed off. What is she doing here anyway, she barely qualifies as an actress now.

  3. Cory says:

This article is obviously biased and intended to make people not buy the tickets. They mean people hate Katie more than they like the majority of a talented cast? The journalism is also very unprofessional. It is one thing not to like her husband but to jeopardise her career is low. Even for the so called anonymous. And this is anonymous from the way the refer to scientology.

  4. geronimo says:

Katie is the least experienced (and talented) of the cast members and the least likely to get bums on seats. If the play has been promoted on the strength of her involvement, then it’s hardly a surprise, given ticket prices, that interest is low/non-existent.

  5. sassyspank says:

    she bores me to tears.

  6. yeh sure. katharine and tom would be a major tourist attraction here in nyc, and no one wants to see katherine on broadway. those nobodies must be from hollywood.

  7. Megan says:

I really don’t like her nose job. She used to have the cutest face with a cute little flat nose, and now she looks like a bird. FREE KATIE!

  8. RAN says:

I love the smarky look on her face in that bottom pic. It’s almost like ‘look at me, that’s right, look at me, I’m with him” 🙄 Might want to try a different facial expression Katie.

Syko, her posture was the first thing I noticed too… never really noticed it before, but you’re right… she’s all scrunched up to stay level with the midget. He should just try heels – might help them both 😆

  9. Cory says:

Geronimo, it is the media that has been blowing up her involvement. That is how they make money. The poster has cast members and there is nothing special given to her. This play is in September and yet at the beginning of July, this article is written. I think its intention is reverse psychology, to make people not buy the tickets.

Katie has always had a slouch, even before Tom Cruise. Not a big fan of Tom Cruise but I like Katie. Let her be, she has done nothing wrong. Attacking her does not take away scientology. Such petty childish comments.

  10. bros says:

useless and insipid are the words I am thinking of when I look at her.

  11. gracie says:

Quite by accident I caught her small indie movie from a while back…Pieces of April and it was so charming!

TOM CRUISE RUINS EVERYTHING HE TOUCHES.

I wish we could get a group / mob together with torches and sticks and save her. Drag her butt out of there and get her deprogrammed pronto.

  12. Sherri says:

People can’t help who they fall in love with, this includes Katie. She seems to be a sweet, charming young woman. I agree with the comments that Lithgow and or Weist should be the “featured” players in advertising!! I am hoping that Katie will wake up one day and realize that everyone makes a mistake, even one named Tom Cruise!!

  13. texasmom says:

She never seemed that exciting or interesting to me before Tom OR after — but at least before she didn’t have that awful smirk!

  14. Kolby says:

The posture really is killing me. No wonder people are always speculating about a pregnancy!

  15. Jody says:

I really liked ‘Pieces of April’, too gracie. I thought she might be on the verge of becoming something more than Joey Potter.

‘thought’ being the operative word in that sentence.

I couldn’t agree more about the posture, I work with Chiropractors and PTs as a rehab massage therapist, and this is what we like to call, Dowagers Hump in the making. No good.

  16. poopie says:

She’s not drinking enough of her BARLEY WATER and it’s causing her bones to shrink and bend!!hshahhahahahhahahhaha

  17. Bodhi says:

I have really bad posture too. 🙁 But seeing how bad she looks made me straighten up ASAP!

Ugh, I can’t stand Kat(i)e Holmes. I hated Dawson’s & thought she was the worst part of it. I think she is a terrible actress & I HATE the way she smirks & talks out of the side of her mouth.

No comment about Tom, et al…

  18. Jody says:

Not that you even solicited tips Bodhi, but if you have posture woes, try to take nice slow deep breaths throughout the day, that should spring you right up, and remind you of where your spine wants/needs to be.

And always roll your shoulders back, that will open your chest, tightening your Rhomboids, which will help correct your posture naturally.

Sorry again if you weren’t even needing/wanting this info… I just like to help with these things, it’s what I do… 🙂

  19. Kaiser/ Hippacrat says:

The only thing I agree with is that it’s unfair to compare Nicole’s Blue Room experience with KatE’s. If I remember correctly, The Blue Room was directed by Sam Mendes when he was on fire as a theatre director. And the show was in London, Nic did nudity and she was the main role.

KatE’s doing a boring play that few people would want to see, after pushing out The Chorus Line from the same theatre. And she doesn’t have the main role. Or the talent. Apples and oranges.

  20. xiaoecho says:

for all her youth and beauty, the woman is charmless

and the smirk only adds insult to injury

  21. cmoody says:

Katie’s posture was just as bad (actually a LOT worse) on Dawson’s creek. I would spend entire episodes of that show wishing I could shove steel rod down her spine to make her stand up straight. But, I hear that is a problem a large number of tall women have. They spent so much of their adolescence trying not to tower over their peers that they developed a habit of slouching.

  22. Bodhi says:

Thanks for the tips Jody! My fiance is always telling me to stand up straight, but I need to hear it! I need to get a good back pillow for my shitty office chair & go see a chiropracter too…

  23. adleisia says:

This does make me smile just a little… All My Sons is probably my favorite Miller play, and I was considering trying to get tickets with Dianne Wiest and John Lithgow in the cast, but once they announced Kate Holmesbot, I was completely turned off.

  24. Anna says:

Kaiser/Hippacrat: All my Sons is a wonderful play and not at all boring, so I think it really can’t be blamed at all for poor ticket sales.

I find it disgraceful how they disregarded the other actors in promoting the play. Karma’s a bitch, right?

Confidentiality agreements? I can’t wait till the tell-all comes out! But seriously: I’ve done some plays and I would never have done them if there had been such great inequalities between us actors. I’m amazed they even got such great actors to stay on with Cruise Cursed Katie. Producers able of that much wishful thinking would have made me bolt!

  25. Asmodee says:

She had a midlife crisis in her mid-20s and that’s why she entered into lucrative contractual amour with Tom. When you’re an ingenue who has nothing to offer except a cute face, a future in the acting field is not bright.

I remember having a crush on her in movies like Wonder Boys and Ice Storm but every time she opened her mouth, she ruined it. She couldn’t even deliver her minimal dialogue without it feeling contrived and forced. She is just so dumb and empty and it comes across no matter who is directing her or no matter how good the script is. She was an empty shell, with no identity, heading towards desperation — perfect fodder for a cult.

  26. Ron says:

Here’s the difference..see even if Nicole was married to Tombot, she had talent. Far more then he has ever had. Kat-E doesn’t have that kind of talent or real interest in her. On top of that your’re right Jaybird, she’s tepid…and vacant on top of that. Unless she absolutely knocks this role out of the ballpark, which is doubtful, this play will not be a success like Nicole’s or Julia’s.

  27. kate says:

that scarf attached to the back of her dress reminds me of a leash. tom must like it, though. i’ll bet he’ll insist katie sew them on all her clothes so he can hang on to her even tighter.

  28. bros says:

    also bodhi,

throughout the day, tighten you stomach muscles slightly, so you can still breathe, like you are tightening a belt. hold for three seconds while still breathing comfortably and release, repeating 20 times, about 4 times a day. this will help your stomach muscles support your core and make sitting up straight and standing better hurt less and be less taxing on your body. healthy/strong rhomboids need the core support to hold your shoulders back.

  29. abbizmal says:

She needs to check her bad posture before it becomes permanent. I don’t recall her stooping like that before she met Tom the Tool. Poor girl. She definitely needs a deprogramming. That Scientology crap is scary. Run, KatEE, Run.

  30. Because I say So says:

All I can say is—Better Broadway than ruining the Dark Knight! Although I’m not sure Maggie Gyllenhal is much of an improvement

  31. Bodhi says:

I think Maggie is a far superior actress. I didn’t even see the 1st Batmen until recently because Kat(i)e was in it…

  32. breederina says:

Pieces of April was okay because of a decent script and a great cast. Katie Holmes was the weakest link in that line up. Patricia Clarkson, Oliver Platt, Derek Luke. Katie’s performance was the one you had to sit through to get to the others. She didn’t suck, but she was totally replaceable. We won’t even touch Mad Money.
Whoever encouraged her to hit Broadway having never done any real stage work before deserves a smack upside the head. One guess who it might be.

  33. If says:

If I were John Lithgow and Diane Wiest I’d be enraged that some slumped over starlet has sunk the run of the play. Unlike Oprah, Tom can’t buy the world, and he can’t MAKE people except his Scientology crap, especially since it didn’t really “cure” his real sexual orientation or that of John Travolta’s.

  34. Wil in Mpls says:

Dang .. Look for Katie Holmes to develop and “Dowagers Hump” .. probably in the next 3 – 5 years. Unless the gets smart and gets out.

  35. M. Koenig says:

It is absurd that this kind of ‘tabloidy’ journalism has taken over the mainstream media. This article is very biased and vindictive without any research or open minded reporting. It is the kind of thing you would expect from TMZ, enquirer, Defamer or Perez Hilton.

I am not in NY but yes I am working on this project. I have not met Katie Holmes yet in person but from those who have met her, she is indeed nothing but professional. The ticket sales are fine, though more expensive, they have sold faster than those of Cyrano de Bergerac,” (Garner)another play I worked on. Please note that they have not been on sale for long (a week or so) and the play is in September. To say tickets have failed to sell in July is ridiculous.

I could bet this article was written even before the tickets sales were launched. My guess is that the writer could not wait and this article was written the moment he learnt Katie Holmes was in this play. Just as the same person will write that Katie is the weakest link if the play does well and if it doesn’t, it will be blamed on her and her husband. The feeble attempts at neutrality are laughable.

It is clear as day light that the writer has a problem with scientology and Tom Cruise therefore Katie. Just like the writer am not surprised that most posters link their bias to scientology.

There is more to this play than Katie Holmes. This article is intended to make the tickets fail to sell. This is absurd, there are other people in the people, right from the start, the producers have been adamant that the play is not a Katie Holmes Vehicle, it is the media that has sold it as such. She is a decent actress whoI respect but she is not starring in the play.

The problem with this vindictive reporting style is that it does not take into consideration that there are other people whose livelihoods must go on and are affected by such negative talk. I hope the tickets sales continue being strong, none of us expected a 2 hour ticket sell out, this is after all a broadway show not a concert.Come September, and you will swallow your words.

New York Post’s standards are not the best, but this is a new low.

    Thank you

    M.Koenig

  36. Kaiser/ Hippacrat says:

Methinks a Scientologist is in the midst.

  37. Bodhi says:

And this IS a gossip blog…

  38. Canadian cutie says:

Katie is trying to emulate Nicole, but she is not held in the same regard professionally. I know Nicole sometimes has a frozen face, but she is a fine actress. I always thought Tom was jealous of Nicole, and stifled her talent. Nic won an Oscar after he dumped her. When Nic was in her 20’s, she was breathtakingly beautiful. Katie looks like a boy since she chopped her hair off, and prances around in a pretentious manner trying to be like Posh. Katie is a bland, vacant golddigger, and I don’t understand why she doesn’t just focus on Suri & motherhood, instead of pretending to be an actress. Watching her in any medium is sheer toture!

  39. Canadian cutie says:

Sorry, I meant to type Sheer Torture!!

  40. Anastasia says:

AHA! We got a Scientologist to post! ROFL.

    Go away, Scientologist.

  41. Anon says:

I was actually hoping it would go well for her, just because it would perhaps give her a little pride and purpose in something outside of being Mrs Cruise. Her whole personality seems to have been swallowed by Cruise and his cult, I would like to see her grow into her self a little and perhaps find some independence.

  42. breederina says:

Yes M. Koenig I suspect “there are other people in the people” as you so perceptively wrote.

But Scientologists know all about that don’t they ?

  43. countrybabe says:

I always find these stories funny because I always thought Katie married Tom so she could just shop all day long. Tom needs to give her better advice on her career. I mean he’s never been on Broadway-It’s not for everyone.

  44. Silly Lilly says:

This is NOT Hollywood…. Scientologists? Honey the only religion in NYC that is “offbeat” is stock broking and its psycho sister day trading…. All other religion tends to be either Sunday Seekers or Cristears….Christmas and Easter dwellers… (sorry I couldnt resist)… and I am making it worse than it is but you get the point…. by the way, all worship however at NYSE. While Hollywood snickers at the Great White Way…. it always has been and always will be a mix of experiment and excitement and full of TRUE talent and endurance. Go take your bazillions and go not eat a piece of Sushi with Posh or somethin…. I know thats mean. But I picture them sitting over a grain of rice and a small piece of sushi debating on how to taste without swallowing…..

  45. Kat says:

Nicole has talent, and I would pay money to see her. Something about Katie just reminds me of a Zombie. Maybe she would be good in a remake of “The Night Of The Living Dead.”

  46. Leah says:

Why does she look like she’s planning the demise of the world in that picture?

  47. Pam says:

Her smirk in every photograph nowadays is such an unpleasant thing to encounter. I dread coming across stories about her. What the heck is she thinking about with a face like that anyway?? It’s sad to ponder …

  48. Ling says:

I’m going to admit that I recently saw a production of “The Country Girl” solely because of the cast: Morgan Freeman, Frances McDormand, and Peter Gallagher. (They were unimpressive.) Otherwise, would I ever have chosen to see a play called “The Country Girl”? Absolutely not. (It’s not a stellar play, either.)

I found it a bit cheap, how plays are promoted on Broadway. “A Chorus Line” had recently signed Mario Lopez, and what did their posters say? “Now with Mario Lopez!” Why didn’t they just write, “Now with 10% More B-List Starpower!” Same with Grease, same with every other show. To quote Chicago, “What ever happened to class?”

  49. Linda says:

The other members of the cast should have been promoted. I think Katie Holmes could have pulled off acting on Broadway. Unfortunately, she brings alot of her personal life baggage with her. She has been cold & conceited acting when I’ve seen her on talk shows. She needs to promote just herself, not that she’s Mrs. Tom Cruise, that will not get her anywhere.

  50. Laila says:

Funny but this article was written on the same day the tickets went on sale. That is rather telling.

  51. Cory says:

    Laila,
don’t bother with brain dead people, this is what the site selling the tickets had

    Important Notice;
Please Note: Due to overwhelming demand for tickets to All My Sons, there is a delay in processing all types of orders being mailed. There are stringent ticket limits which have added to the normal processing time. We expect tickets being sent by regular mail should be received 4 weeks after an order has been placed. Thank you for your understanding’

I guess they will write anything. They are getting a bit desperate. 🙁
