Jessica Simpson demands people compliment her ring at her engagement party

Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson threw themselves an engagement party on Thursday night, which seems rather soon to me. I think the theory/guess that Jess and Eric will be walking down the aisle in a hurry is probably right on – if you told me the nuptials were going to be around Christmas, I wouldn’t yell at you. I really do think she’ll try to have this wedding bigger and sooner than Nick’s… and the fact that she’s still comparing is pathetic. Anyway, whirlwind engagement, big, fat engagement party, etc. Most sites covered it without bashing Jessica – People Magazine notes that the theme of the party was “Italian” which basically means they ordered pizzas. A source notes that Jessica was excited to show off her ring. Us Weekly gets more details:

Less than a week after Us Weekly exclusively broke the news of their engagement, Jessica Simpson, 30, and Eric Johnson, 31, celebrated with friends and family at a party on Thursday night.

About 40 to 50 people, including a few NFL players, gathered at the California home of Simpson’s parents, Joe and Tina. Guests were served hamburger and veggie burger sliders, chicken skewers, mini pizzas, shrimp, and for dessert, mini cupcakes.

“They were very happy,” a friend of Jessica’s tells UsMagazine.com. “It was the first time they had seen a lot of their friends since the engagement. She was excited to see her girlfriends.”

[From Us Weekly]

Sounds nice. In Touch Weekly has an interesting/hilarious sidenote though – apparently the whole affair was catered by La Loggia Italian Bistro, including wait staff. And this is what happened:

“Jessica and Eric looked so happy,” an insider tells In Touch.

Not all was smooth sailing, however — the singer, who along with her former football player beau arrived two hours late for the soiree, seemed anxious for guests’ approval of her unique ruby engagement ring.

“At one point, she asked one of the servers what she thought of the ring. When the server said it was beautiful, Jessica snapped, ‘You don’t mean that!'” the insider says. But all in all, the blond beauty enjoyed her celebration.

“Jessica is in love,” the insider adds, “and kept talking about her wedding plans and new life with Eric.”

[From In Touch Weekly]

I love the idea of Jessica showing everyone her dumb mall ring and snapping at people who don’t exclaim “OMG, that’s the best ring, EVER!” I so hope this is true. It’s perfect!

Also – I know some of you are theorizing that Jessica is pregnant. I wouldn’t doubt it in the least.

Ugh. Who shows up 2 HOURS LATE to their own engagement party? How disrespectful to the friends and family who’ve gathered to celebrate YOUR engagement. I would have eaten and left before they got there, and (maybe) sent them a card. I call that “responding in kind.”

I’m also kinda surprised she wasn’t making people KISS her white-trash mall ring. I would actually expect that kind of thing from her.

  2. TeeTee says:

All I could do is chuckle, between her and LeAnn, just waiting for more!!

shivers** for anyone approached and asked about that DAMN ring, smdh.
I hate rubies, but I wouldn’t tell Jess. LOL

    or maybe I would

  3. Kaboom says:

Pretty ring but why did you put it on the manatee?

  4. mojoman says:

Dont know if I believe the source, (it’s Us Weekly for goodness sake) but I wont be surprised if her engagement stunt is because of the pregnancy theory. The whole thing is so pathetic I cant believe I even commented on this.

  5. Jag says:

Good call, TeeTee. She’s just like LeAnn. Ugh.

@ bellaluna ~ ITA! Some parties are over after 2 hours. I would’ve eaten, and left them a note.

  6. tango says:

No wonder Jessica is sensitive about her ring. Everyone seems to assume, even though it came from Neil Lane Jewelers, that it’s a cheap Kays Jewelers sort of ring because it has a ruby center and is set in yellow gold. Geez, when did spending $100,000 on an engagement ring become cheap? I guess when it’s not white diamonds set in platinum. Just goes to show she lets the opinions of others sway her too much rather than wearing it proudly if that is the ring she chose. Or quite possibly, she doesn’t like it at all and Eric chose it. But she’s so desperate to get married, she doesn’t have the nerve to tell her boyfriend she’d like a different ring.

And being 2 hours late for your own engagement party? Tacky, tacky, tacky. Exactly like how this marriage is going to end up.

  7. Lady D says:

One hundred grand for a ring is a lot of money. Normally. However when you have the millions Jess does, that does makes it seem like a cheap ring.

  8. Jessica says:

So Jessica wants people to comment on her engagement ring and if they don’t she gets upset?

This just PROVES What an insecure person she really is.

I feel VERY sorry for the children she hopefully will not bring into this world.

Jessica DOES NOT deserve to be a mother.

This marriage WILL end up in divorce and hopefully she is stupid enough to not sign a prenup and Eric takes her to the cleaners.

  9. Rianic says:

When I was ready to get engaged, I left magazines open to the rings I liked. When I knew he WAS going to ask, ie he showed an interest, I started tearing out and emailing him photos. I wasn’t nearly desperate, just had decided after five years it was time. It seems she would at least do something like that!

  10. bellaluna says:

@ tango ~It’s not because the ring is yellow gold, nor is it because it’s a ruby instead of a diamond: it’s because it looks like something you’d buy on sale from a TV shopping channel. It’s the style, or lack thereof, rather.

@ Rianic ~ Very smart of you. My husband relied on my friends. I worked with a former jewelry store saleswoman (who also happened to wear the same size ring) and he took her with him to pick out the ring, and had it sized before he even proposed to me.

  11. guesty says:

worked with a girl once who hated the engagement ring her bf proposed with. it was too plain & too small.

anyolehoo…she went to a different jeweler & bought the one she really wanted & gave him back the original the very next day.

they had a gorgeous wedding & are still married today.

  12. glo says:

In 10 or 20 years Jessica Simpson is going to be very large. And still look ATTRACTIVE. She comes across as not too bright, but lovable and sweet.

(Seeing one of her trashy videos dampened that for me a little bit — a little TOO dumb)

  13. Mizz Tickles says:

Maybe she liked the ring that Nick gave her better? Also I don’t get why someone would be late for their engagement party, it is such a special occasion that you’d think the couple would want to be early. I imagine there must have been a lot of people p*ssed off for having to wait so long, how inconsiderate to your guests. Will they be on time for their nuptials?

  14. BrandyMc says:

Her ring looks like something that you would buy from wal-mart for 9.99 on the ring rack.

  15. Feebee says:

There won’t be a wedding. There will be stories of plans, pics of Jessica coming out of a bridal designer’s place et al, then a story of Jess in tears over HUGE BETRAYAL (like her beau spoke to a girl he knew in high school or something) and the pity party will start. She’ll probably work it up to whenever Nick gets married.

Maybe she’s hoping to turn into a younger version of Jennifer Aniston. Jen has a much higher class of nemesis in AJ (according to the rags anyway) but Jess only has Minillo. Wardrobe, ring, and now nemesis, budget all the way.

  16. brin says:

She really comes across as desperate & insecure. I think she is the only one “racing to the altar”. (well, leann, too!).

  17. photo jojo says:

I just want to pull her aside and help her pick out more flattering clothes. She’s not fat; she definitely has a little more weight on her than most in the public eye but she does NOT help herself at all with the clothes she picks out. Don’t try so hard, Jess!

  18. mollination says:

God if she’s pregnant and this relationship of her’s really is what it seems I’ll be so pissed. That is so irresponsible to bring children into the world for your own selfish, insecure, effed up reasons.

  19. MissyA says:

It’s pretty telling that she liked the ring enough to buy it for herself, but now that the general consensus is that it’s fugly, she suddenly gets insecure.

Jess, honey, it really doesn’t matter what we think – you’re missing the whole point. It’s sad, but not surprising.

  20. BRE says:

Who cares what the ring looks like. when my BF proposed, I didn’t even look at the ring he was holding out, all I kept thinking was that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. The ring is beautiful but it’s almost like a child, it’s beatiful because it is yours I don’t give a crap what people think and regardless how nice your ring is, there will be snobby women out there that will make a comment on it because women can be really catty about that sort of thing.

  21. Liana says:

where did her neck go? I swear, she used to have one.

  22. bellaluna says:

@ BRE ~ I think it’s lovely that you feel that way. Mr. bellaluna has been talking about switching out my stone for something larger or getting me a different ring for our 10 year anniversary. I told him no. It’s the ring he proposed to me with, the one I adore because he took the time and effort to choose it for me. I don’t want a bigger stone or a different ring. I want the one I got from him on the beach when he asked me to marry him.

It’s like those people *coughevalongoriatonyparkercough* who spend $1.5M on a wedding, when the marriage doesn’t even last for 5 years; it’s the marriage, not the wedding ceremony, that matters most.

  23. Jayna says:

Please. Idle gossip. Jessica is sweet and would not DEMAND people compliment her ring.

  24. TeeTee says:

Jess is insecure and crazy, this engagement is proof-she just couldn’t WAIT a year or so to marry him–she knows nothing about him except he got a divorced a few months ago..(he’s broke)

she is a tit 4 tat kinda girl, and I do mean girl. trying to beat or upstage, is immature and with her track record, LORD knows she should wait b4 she leaps.

she nds to focus on her style and her image (cute, frumpy & crazy) is NOT a good look!

  25. wunderkindt says:

Jess sweating over what the ‘La Loggia Italian Bistro wait staff’ thinks about her ring?

    Geez!

Hope she doesnt spew explosive pizza diarreha because of all that ‘ring anxiety’.

  26. ANN says:

    SHE IS SO OVER

  27. Persistent Cat says:

So they were two hours late for the engagement party they were throwing for themselves???? Wow, that’s keeping it classy.

  28. Lin99 says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if she is preggo! Look how well it worked out for Ashlee and Pete…..Jess probably thought it was her best option lol

  29. devilgirl says:

She wears the most unflattering clothes possible.

  30. Camille says:

Count down to the pregnancy announcement. That’s why they will rush things, Jessica wants a baby. If she’s not pregnant right now, she hopes to be. It wouldn’t surprise me.

  31. Liana says:

I can’t figure out what’s going on in that first picture after the header pic. It’s shot from a weird angle that makes it look like she’s missing a boob or is really misaligned in the chest area. I know it’s just the angle, but dayum.

And yeah, she’s a sweet girl, but she comes across as a bit immature.

  32. OfficialBitch says:

Yeah she looks FATTTTTTT big girls need to pay close attention to their styling.

  33. dorothy says:

Kind a pathetic. Looks like she was trying to up-stage ex-husband. She’s been trying to snag a husband ever since she divorced.

  34. Athena says:

I wouldn’t want her near my cat let alone a baby. God help that child.

  35. Girl from Denmark says:

She doesn´t carry all that weight very well at all! She looks very unhealthy and unattractive, like she has too much fat around her vital organs.
She looks a little like Miss Piggy.

  36. Eleonor says:

I don’t know why, but I find everything about this engagement sad.

  37. gabs says:

    Pathetic.

  38. Stronzilla says:

The theme was “Italian” and they served hamburger and veggie burger sliders, chicken skewers, mini pizzas, shrimp, and for dessert, mini cupcakes????

Theme sounds more like “Food Court” and IMO went perfectly with the dumb mall ring motif.

  39. wunderkindt says:

    @Strongzilla

The ‘food court theme’ makes sense because it was right next to the ring shop afterall!

  40. Stronzilla says:

@wunderkindt: oh, silly me, my bad. its been a while since I navigated a mall in the US.
