Matthew McConaughey might not suck in ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’

I know this is evidence of what a slow news day this is (I mean, our biggest story of the day is about how Jessica Simpson looks pregnant). But I just watched the trailer for The Lincoln Lawyer, starring Matthew McConaughey, and it actually looks… not bad. I’m almost going to say that I would probably-definitely see this in some kind of dollar-movie and/or first week rental situation. Pajiba points out – I think correctly – that Matthew McConaughey is at his best – nay, tolerable – when he’s allowed to be a bit sleazy and dirty. I never really bought him as a straight-up romantic lead, though, although his rom-coms have done pretty well, depending on his costar. In some ways, McCounaughey is a throw-back to a different era – I could see him being a leading, in-demand actor back in the 1940s, in the age of screwball comedies and pearl-clutching melodrama. But as a modern star, Matt is kind of lacking. But this looks okay:

Ryan Phillippe is playing it “sleazy” too, although for him I don’t think it’s much of a stretch. Marisa Tomei plays Matthew‘s love interest, I think. And smaller roles filled by William H. Macy and Josh Lucas – will this be worth the rental? Will Matthew have another hit on his hands?

Not even an apparent rib injury could get Matthew McConaughey down on set of his new film The Lincoln Lawyer in Los Angeles, CA on August 17, 2010. The actor had a bandage around his ribs and needed help getting up from a golf cart from production crew, but Matthew kept on smiling especially when he was visited by his partner Camila Alves and their two children Levi Alves McConaughey and Vida Alves McConaughey. Tensions look high on set as actors Ryan Phillippe and Matthew McConaughey sweat their way through filming scenes for their new film 'The Lincoln Lawyer' currently shooting on location in Los Angeles, Ca on August 13, 2010 Fame Pictures, Inc

he filmed part of this across the street from my job. kind of funny seeing him just walking around in a suit like he lives here, but i’m excited to see what it turns out to be.

  2. Hautie says:

The book this movie is based on is excellent.

And I have always thought Ryan would do well as a skeezy former frat boy killer.

So there is a real chance I will pay to see this one.

  3. LOVE ANGELINA says:

OOOOoooo That looked soo yummy. Looks like a good crime drama. See thats how you give a little taste of the plot so you can know what the movie is about but not give much away but keep it suspenseful. I am interested. You forgot to mention my baby John Leguizamo is in it to (Hey he is never been in HGF, if you do one this week or next can he be in in one?). OMG so many good actors just jam packed into this. I am excited.

LOL I don’t know how Matt got stuck doing silly roles, maybe its the money, but I still remember how good he was in A Time to Kill.

“I would probably-definitely see this in some kind of dollar movie and/or first week rental situation”…wow, Kaiser, that’s some endorsement…lol!

  5. mln says:

Ryan is a douche but he was great in Breach. As for Matthew I don’t think he has much range but sleazier is always better with him. The supporting cast is really good.

  6. bellaluna says:

I just can’t with Ryan Phillippe. To me, he always looks like a dweeby deer caught in the headlights.

  7. devilgirl says:

I actually think this looks good and I like everyone in it. Yes, even Ryan.

  8. mslewis says:

The Michael Connolly book this is based on was very good (as are all of his books with this character) but I can’t picture MattMc as the character and, if I remember correctly, he did not have a “love interest.” I have no intention of paying $12 to see this in the theatre but I’ll definitely put it on my Netflix queue.

  9. mslewis says:

Oh, and I REALLY don’t like Ryan Phillippe. Such a snake.

  10. SoulLovah says:

sighhh, mcconaughey always did play a yummy lawyer… (A Time To Kill)

  11. Tatermcgee says:

Hot! I don’t care if he uses deodorant or not.

  12. Carrie says:

The book is pretty good- I’ll admit to being intrigued. Not enough to see it in the main theater, but enough to do a second-run/Netflix viewing unless the reviews are really strong.

  13. carrie says:

I read the book so i will see the movie

  14. coucou says:

Matt looks better dirty blonde…dark hair kind of washes him out…hmm, i was just thinking about putting color over my highlights – not gonna do it now…

How come they don’t do a movie of the Preppy Sex Murder case…i’m not twisted, but it’s no worse than Inferno and could have an interesting cast…(with all due respect to the victim’s family – which is probably why no film…)

anyway, i have to agree with the general consensus that Ryan Philippe is kind of milk toast blah for me…dude’s got no edge worth speaking ’bout, not even toast points…meh to the meh degree…

  15. Bodhi says:

Matt was AMAZING in Time to Kill. I remember that my mom dragged me to see it in the theaters (I think I was 13) & I was blown away (plus he was wicked hot in it!!)

@Hautie ~ Thats brilliant!! He could play the Craigslist killer!

  16. kTEX says:

    He has stubby arms. That.Is.All.

  17. Raven says:

Ryan Phillipe as a lying spoiled sleazebag is perfect casting.

I like watching MM act. There was one scene in a film with Penelope Cruz. He was windsurfing across a desert, IIRC, and he was obviously having so much fun that he was a joy to watch. I think I’ve liked him in everything I’ve ever seen him in, even that mess with Kate Hudson.

  18. Camille says:

I remember a time when I used to find MC so hot, until his tiny T-Rex arms were pointed out to me and now that is all I can see.

    So. Not. Attractive. Any. More.

  19. Michael says:

matt sucks. period. is he gonna be some southern drawl lawyer again?

  20. scarlett says:

MM is HOT! LOVE HIM! He always comes across as having a great sense of humor and the most attractive quality of all..the ability to laugh at himself. Love him

  21. Lynne says:

I have read all the books and Jeremy Piven will always be Mickey Haller in my head! I can’t even imagine Matthew in that role……

  22. Rio says:

OK- how freaking old is MCc, REALLY? I saw recently that he had a birthday…his “40th”.
Wasn’t he 44 like 3 years ago? FOR around 3 years?

  23. Newbie says:

This looks pretty good, I’ll confess. But Ryan Phillipe ruins it for me.

  24. Saoirse says:

I thought Matthew McConaughey was pretty intense in the movie Frailty, not to mention I’ve always thought he was drop dead gorgeous & just a nice guy all around. I’ll probably go see this movie.

  25. Molly says:

I love MM, so I am going to have to see it! The trailer looks pretty good….
