Jessica Simpson’s proposal story is still full of contradictions

47811, NEW YORK, NEW YORK - Tuesday November 23, 2010. A fuller looking Jessica Simpson makes her way to appear on several talk shows as she leaves her hotel in NYC. Simpson's first stop was Live! with Regis & Kelly before appearing on the Late Night with Jiimmy Fallon show, and ending her day at The Howard Stern Show . These are photos of Jessica Simpson out and about in NYC yesterday, still sick (Jimmy Fallon gave her soup) and still trying to win back some media attention since getting jammed up with Kate Middleton. Is it wrong that I want Kate Middleton to send a “Eat it, Yank” telegram to Jessica? Poor Jess would eat the telegram, though. Anyway, I like Jessica’s styling in these photos. God bless her, she’s so top-heavy (it’s a blessing and a curse), and this kind outfit – slim-cut trousers, bias-cut blouse and a fitted jacket – works really well for curvier girls. Anyway, Jessica is still doing “promotion” for her Christmas album, although all she seems to talk about in any of these interviews is poor Eric. Here’s part of her Access Hollywood interview… honestly, she doesn’t sound quite so dumb in this one:

In addition to a new holiday album, a PBS holiday special and an appearance in this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade – Jessica Simpson is also celebrating her engagement to former NFL player Eric Johnson. Jessica stopped by Access Hollywood Live on Tuesday and dished details about her engagement to Billy Bush and Kit Hoover.

“It was at my house and it was very romantic. We actually met at my house, so he proposed to me where we met,” Jessica explained. “We met through mutual friends, very random, but (it was) the best meeting of my life.”

After Eric popped the question, she revealed that it took her some time to focus on the bling staring back at her.

“I forgot to even look at the ring! I was so shocked in that moment that I had to sit down on his knee and catch my cool. I did not expect it at all,” she continued. “We were both like balling and crying, it was an amazing moment. I just didn’t expect that moment to happen so soon. We had talked about getting married, but I didn’t know that he’d already gone to my dad three weeks before that and to my mom. Everybody kept it a big secret in the Simpson family, which is not a normal thing.”

When it comes to her ring, which features a ruby surrounded by diamonds, Jess was excited to sport something unique.

“He knew that I didn’t want the traditional wedding ring. We’ve both been married before, so we kind of wanted to take this love and to do something completely different with it,” she told Billy and Kit. “It’s actually nice to have both been married, to be able to go through that together, we can understand each other on a different level… He knew that I wanted ruby in my ring… apparently he hid it in his shoe for three weeks, I had no idea!”

The singer, whose new holiday album, “Happy Christmas,” is available now, said life with her fiance couldn’t be better.

“Just the way he makes me feel, honestly,” she said when asked what she loves most about Eric. “How comfortable I feel being myself with him. I love how confident he is and he’s not fazed by this world and life that I’m living… I can’t imagine my life without him in it.”

As for when they plan on walking down the aisle, Jess said the date of the big day is still being worked out.

“We just really haven’t talked much about it. We’ve really just been happy being engaged, so I don’t even know what kind of wedding I’ll have. We both been married before, so you never know what can happen,” the 30-year-old, who was previously married to Nick Lachey, explained.

The blonde beauty told Billy and Kit that they plan on keeping their business lives mostly separate.

“He’s a life coach, which is good for me. He keeps me in check,” Jess continued. “Defiantly, our businesses will always be separate, but he’s a part of most of the decisions I make.”

As for any decision to expand their new family, the couple is waiting – but planning – to add more.

“They are no babies yet,” she revealed. “But, I definitely see myself having a family with him, so that’s exciting to think about.”

I still don’t get the contradiction of the whole engagement and proposal thing being such a “surprise” yet Eric “knew” what kind of ring she wanted. This whole story of the proposal just reeks. Or maybe not… maybe she and Eric went and picked out her ring, and Jessica bought it, and then the next day Eric “surprised” her and proposed, and she had honestly forgotten about it. Isn’t that the plot of an Adam Sandler movie? And what’s with this whole repetition of “three weeks”? Is she just trying to front like Eric planned the proposal weeks before Nick Lachey proposed to Vanessa? Probably. Here’s a video clip from the interview:

i have nothing against this young woman. that said, i LOVE pictures of her signing her name (as in the last photo). she always looks like she’s concentrating so hard and sort of reciting the letters in her head so she gets them in the right order.

  2. brin says:

The most bizarre part is that Eric is a life coach….for who, Jessica?
She looks like she has a brillo pad on her finger in the last pic.

  3. marge says:

    @tiki
    lol
    you’re so right!

  4. lisa says:

Couples talk about rings and such. It is what happens when you talk marriage. I recall Prince William saying he and Kate had been talking for a long time about marriage. YET she was surprised. I don’t see a “contradiction” there. Not comparing relationships but really. I find it funny how this nic picking on certain celebs and what they say is too much. Others say the same exact thing and an it gets no play. but some people love to find fault. She is happy and like all women engaged she gushes over him. She could be making a mistake or she could have found the right person for her. No different then any one else.

But some women seem to bring out the “bit@h” in other women. I guess Jessica is one of them. Why does it matter one way or another. She is with him better or worst. Her relationship lasting or not won’t change anyone’s life but hers.

I’m not a fan but man give the girl a break.

  5. Liana says:

“We were both like balling and crying…”
    *********

I’m rarely the spelling and grammar nazi, but it should be “bawling,” otherwise it brings me a really scary mental picture.

  6. Dudette says:

Shehasn’t learned her lesson has she? Her marriage was a public spectacle last time and it crashed and burned. She’s pimping out this relationship just as hard. Clearly she thinks publicity will bring her happiness. Yessh.

  7. jill says:

I’m really over the fat jokes. Seriously over them. Regardless if they discussed marriage why is it so hard to believe they wouldn’t have discussed what kind of ring she may like? Especially if it was non-traditional? Doesn’t mean she still couldn’t have been shocked he proposed so soon. I think people are really reaching now to find stuff to criticize.

  8. Alejandro says:

The most hilarious part: Eric is a life coach.

  9. Rita says:

    @Liana

    Balling vs bawling. Great catch!!

  10. Listerino says:

I don’t get why she has to point out why she wanted a “different” ring. Everyone has different tastes and who decided what a standard engagement ring is anyway?

  11. bellaluna says:

Maybe she’s confused about the difference between a “life coach” and a (former) football player.

  12. manda says:

she’s looking for tori spelling’s life, i think

  13. saintdevil says:

I’m pretty sure she meant “balling and crying”.

“Bawling” means “crying”, and why would a smart girl like Jess use a tautology?

    I rest my case.

  14. prell says:

good for you Jessica! Beautiful girl.

  15. lucy2 says:

    LOL Liana.
I don’t know, if I’d been discussing marriage and rings, I wouldn’t be that SHOCKED when he proposed. Eh.
Agree about the 3 week thing – I’m sure her people wanted to kill the “it’s a reaction to Nick’s engagement” part of the story and try to establish this has been in the works a while.

On the positive side, that is a good outfit on her – proper styling and she looks great.

  16. Jackson says:

I know I read that she was in the jewelry store and picked out the ring, something like that anyway. I remember reading that someone from the store said how thrilled they both were or something along those lines. No idea if that’s true or not though. I also saw an estimate that the ring cost $250k, which I find ridiculously hard to believe.

And I know she has her ups and downs with weight but dang, she looks pregnant to me. Look how swollen her hands are…

  17. C-Love says:

A PBS holiday special? Seriously? Who’s asleep at the wheel over there?

  18. Stronzilla says:

“We were both like balling and crying, it was an amazing moment.”

My guess is it was a Freudian slip!

“Defiantly, our businesses will always be separate, but he’s a part of most of the decisions I make.”

Freud strikes again. I’m sure he was ‘defiantly’ part of the decision to get married too.

As for carrying the ring around in his shoe for three weeks (what a heel)it sounds like a ripoff of what William said about how he carried his mother’s ring around in his ‘rucksack’ for two weeks to give to Kate. But who is feeding her her lines? Homer Simpson? Doh!

  19. susanne says:

maybe she got a new stylist as an engagement gift- she looks great!

  20. mystified says:

The cut of the outfit is better than she usually wears, but I don’t like the black. Black is so often (rightly or wrongly) seen as a “slimming” color, that whenever I see someone wearing it, I immediately start trying to analyze what figure problem they’re trying to camouflage.

I still don’t understand what she is doing with her own fashion line and why she was a guest judge on Project Runway. She does not have good style sense. I wish Clinton Kelly and Stacey London would restyle her and bring out her true beauty. It’s definitely there, just hidden.

  21. Delta Juliet says:

    Thanks Liana…that was annoying me.

I don’t know….how “surprised” can you really be if you’ve been talking about it? I’ve been engaged three times (don’t judge lol) and I was never that shocked. I mean, maybe my boyfriends were bad actors but they were always a little too antsy right before the big moment. I always had a hunch it was coming.

  22. mln says:

She picked out (and probably bought) the ring and then told him to “surprise” her. Just my opinion.

  23. merry says:

@ Lisa. True: she probably spent hours trying to subtly (or maybe not so subtly) hint at what kind of ring to buy. Oh, and about marrying her, too.

  24. Marjalane says:

Jessica Simpson alternates between looking like a badly aging librarian, and a 70’s porn star.

  25. Alix says:

As for “bawling/balling”, I think we need to point the finger at the reporter or whoever transcribed the interview. Still, hilarious!

  26. Someone Else says:

    “Eat it, Yank”.

Thank you. That was the perfect start to my day.

  27. Moreaces says:

Why on earth would he keep a ring in his shoe.

  28. Jessica says:

I hope she ends up divorced and Eric takes all of her money.

  29. gabs says:

    Eric is her “life coach”?

Is he her new stylist too? I gotta say, Jess has been dressing and looking a lot better lately( im probably jinxing it). Ken Paves can suck it. I can sort of see this working out. I mean, he’ll stay with her for money and sex ( according to mayer shes good in that department) and she’ll stay with him to not be publicly embarrassed. Maybe he is a goldigger who wont leave her and thats okay because shes clueless. Does that make sense??? idk.

I just wish shed stop repeating that she’s been married before. WE KNOW!

  30. Jayna says:

Jess looks pretty there. I understand what she’s saying. Most women have pointed out or discussed type of wedding ring they want. I’m sure they discussed being in love and marriage way before. But she was shocked when it happened because she wasn’t expecting it. Sometimes you get a feel that you’re going to be proposed to, an elaborate night out, whatever. They were at home. Sweet girl,

  31. JustBe says:

I honestly hope that the rumors and speculation about their relationship are wrong (him being separated/divorcing but still maintaining an intimate relationship with his wife, her needing a warm body to spend time with on her 30th birthday that got extended to permanent arm candy)and that these two enjoy a long and happy relationship. My thinking is that the more happy people that exist in the world, the better off the world is.

However, I hope that their joy is celebrated in private. I refuse to believe that someone in her corner can’t make the connection between her last divorce/relationships and the pressure that was implied by the constant publicity fueled by her constantly discussing every relationship detail in front of whatever camera/mic was pushed in front of her.

I used to like her as someone who may be a bit naive, but overall has a good heart. But, since the divorce, I’m starting to believe that she excitedly and willingly participates in the poorly concocted media manipulation stories that her handlers develop in order to always keep her name in the public eye. I understand that part of her business may depend on publicity, but damn!

  32. Relli says:

    He is a life coach!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, that sounds a bit made up right?

  33. Samigirl says:

I remember after she and Nick got married, she would always make little comments about her sex life. Specifically when they hosted The Miss USA contest (or whatever the heck beauty contest it was) and he would make a comment and she would say something like “Oh it’s a good thing you are good in bed hahahaha”
I’m REALLY looking forward to round 2 of that.

  34. GGooDei MC says:

    That second pic is HORRID!!

  35. Kerri says:

I also don’t get the contradiction. if they were talking about getting engaged the ring would have come up. My boyfriend and i started to speak about enagement rings quite a while back and while i know we will be getting engaged i asked him to surprise me. So while when he finally asks is goign to be a surprise, the fact that he is going to ask is not.

Maybe it was the same thing. They spoke they knew they wanted it but when he did it was unknown to her.

By the way, with the whole “balling and crying” thing, correct me if i am wrong but she did not write the transcript she just said the words. And i am inclined to think that she meant maybe scream and shouting when she said bawling as opposed to just crying – tears running down her face. IMHO

  36. Persistent Cat says:

@ Moreaces’ questions” Why on earth would he keep a ring in his shoe?

I suspect that was brought up so she could again state that it was bought 3 WEEKS BEFORE HE PROPOSED!!!!! You did read that part right, where he bought the ring 3 weeks before and asked her dad 3 weeks before and basically did everything BEFORE NICK PROPOSED TO THAT WOMAN.

I don’t understand why people like that girl. She’s beyond useless. Her lips freak me out.

  37. ses says:

I’ve read a few other accounts of the Jessica/Eric proposal here and elsewhere, but I don’t remember hearing about the “ring in the shoe” detail until this interview.

It did seem oddly familiar though: Prince William apparently kept his mother’s ring in his backpack for two weeks before proposing:

    http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/w0008169.html

Did anyone else hear Jessica talk about this detail before the royal engagement stole her spotlight?

  38. Hautie says:

I watch her interview on Regis/Kelly the other day… and of course Kelly asked to see her ring.

And the camera panned to it and it really is a pretty ring. Large oval ruby and two pear cut diamonds… yet I have not seen a really decent pic of it online…

Jessica mention it was a @1910 Tiffany ring. So that is why I suspect it keeps getting random value’s placed on it.

Vintage Tiffany rings are priced based on what the jeweler can get someone to pay.

So I suspect Neil Lane(?) jewelers jacked the price way up for it.

  39. Jeri says:

Well at least Jessica’s people have finally come up with a “job” they could hang on Eric. Life Coach, hmmm… He probably advises his clients to find a wealthy needy partner to support them.

  40. la chica says:

she keeps adding to and refining the lie. and the more she lies, the more pathetic she seems. bottom line — she was trying to upstage her ex so she hustled out, bought herself a ring, and got that man to propose.

and Eric is clearly going along with the public spectacle. so he knows that he has hooked up with a desperate, low self-esteem liar who can’t even keep the details of the lie straight. K-Fed Part 2. i wonder how much it will cost her?

  41. CB Rawks says:

“We actually met at my house”
    Was this a Craigslist thing?

  42. PrettyLights says:

Like Jill, I’m also seriously over the fat jokes. It’s just unnecessary and she is NOT FAT. She’s just not a twig like so many other stars these days, and I am happy for that. She looks like a healthy average woman with some curves and there is nothing wrong with that. I do admit that sometimes she could were more flattering outfits though, but this one I really do like on her.

  43. Camille says:

    Oh, he’s a ‘life coach’. 😆
I know a couple of those, they generally think they are awesome, that they know EVERYTHING and that they are better than everyone else (because they know everything) thus they feel they can tell others how to ‘live their lives’.

  44. Trippin says:

Her face and hands say I’m pregnant.
