Josh Duhamel gets thrown off of a flight for being a jagoff

Is Josh Duhamel a dick? I can never tell. And this story of Josh isn’t helping. According to TMZ, Josh was kicked off of a plane yesterday after repeatedly refusing to turn off his Blackberry. Josh claims that he was only texting someone about the plane being delayed. But get what happened: so, the flight attendant was all “seriously, you need to turn that off” and Josh was all “Bitch, I said NO.” So the flight attendant “called for backup” and the plane turned off of the runway and went back to the gate so that Josh could be formally thrown off. Doesn’t that seem… um, excessive?

Josh Duhamel was escorted off of a plane yesterday after he refused to turn off his BlackBerry … sources tell TMZ

We’re told Duhamel was on a flight from New York (LGA) to Kentucky — when, according to sources, the flight attendant asked Duhamel to turn off his BlackBerry before takeoff … but he refused.

One passenger tells us Duhamel was “very rude” and “taunting the attendant.”

We’re told the flight attendant asked Josh to turn off the device three separate times — and on the third time Josh laughed at her request.

We’re told Duhamel’s reaction infuriated the attendant, who then called for backup — and the plane, which was already on the runway, was turned back to the gate.

Two officers eventually boarded the plane and escorted Duhamel off of the aircraft.

We’re told passengers were pissed — because the incident further delayed the flight.

Before boarding the plane, we’re told Josh was in the airport bar watching the Cleveland/Miami game.

Duhamel’s rep told TMZ Josh was texting on his BlackBerry about his flight being delayed. The rep adds, “He’s sorry.”

[From TMZ]

Is Josh a dick? Yes, probably, absolutely, and let me make this clear: Josh handled himself very poorly, and he deserves the overwhelming majority of the scorn. That being said, the flight attendant and the pilot who turned off the runway also sound like major a–holes too, in my opinion. In a holiday season where every flight is delayed and passengers are already pissed off, you’re going to act like a kindergarten teacher and order the plane back to the gate… over a dude who wouldn’t turn off his Blackberry? Shouldn’t “going back to the gate” be used only in emergencies, like “the engine just fell out” or “a terrorist has a box cutter”? Here’s a thought: why not just get the air marshal to confiscate Josh’s Blackberry for the length of the flight, then arrest him for harassment or whatever once the flight lands?

    What an asshat.

  2. Ricci says:

    He is so yummy

  3. Deeta says:

There are protocols that airlines must follow. I think it sucks that it delayed the flight, but I think is great that the airplane treated him like any other idiot who doesnt want to follow the rules.

  4. David says:

    What a dick move!

  5. Celebitchy says:

Well I think they overreacted. But Josh should have backed down and turned it off when they asked him. It sounds like he was so rude about it and wanted to make a point. This just reminds me of how much it sucks to fly.

  6. Laura says:

They had to go back to the gate because those are the rules. It seems insignificant, until maybe one day some flight crew does ignore just a little thing and something bad happens.

  7. brin says:

He seems like a little pr*ck.

  8. Marjalane says:

No way was this an over-reaction! Anyone who has the balls to screw around on a flight these days doesn’t need to be on my flight. If you’ve got some jackwipe that refuses to do what the attendent tells him to do- what EVERYBODY has to do- that is the same jackwipe that you’re going to have other issues with on board. Esp. if he’s been boozing. It only takes one time on a flight to have someone go “all Kanye” on it, to make you hate anyone who doesn’t just sit there and shut up!

  9. ElizabethM says:

Not all flights have air marshals.

  10. Hilldog says:

if his flight was delayed he should have had plenty of time to text whomever while he was waiting to board, no? How long does it take to send a text? 2 hours of waiting and three warnings? I think not…he was just being a dick. I dont think they overreacted at all

  11. jen says:

“and the plane turned off of the runway and went back to the gate so that Josh could be formally thrown off. Doesn’t that seem… um, excessive?”

Um, no. Electronic interference causing the pilot to lose contact with ground control is slightly more important than Josh’s sexting.

  12. guesty says:

over-reactions from both sides of the aisle….hahahaha. but seriously that sucks.

remember a few years ago when a pastor’s wife freaked out on an airplane @ christmas? they threw her ass off the plane as well & delayed the flight.

these over inflated egos really need to chill for everyones sake.

  13. lucy2 says:

    What a jerk!
Going back to the gate seems unnecessary, but if those are the rules, I guess that’s what they have to do.

  14. devilgirl says:

I get tired of z list celebs thinking that the sun rises and falls with the.

Dude! The same rules that apply to us peasants on flights ALSO apply to you, no matter what you think!

  15. lin234 says:

I’m going with the airline staff on this one. You’ve got to make an major ass of yourself to get yourself kicked off a flight.

Anytime you have to deal with all types of people, there will be people you encounter who are major a-holes. You’ve got to be a special kind of a-hole to really piss off a flight attendant enough that the flight needs to be turned around just so they can kick you off.

I wonder how he taunted the flight attendant. This makes him look like such a huge prick.

  16. SamiHami says:

Not an overreaction at all. The flight attendant and crew did exactly what they should have done, and I hope this entitled jerk learned that the universe doesn’t revolve around his oversized ego.

  17. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Aren’t all electronic devices supposed to be turned off before take off? If he wouldn’t turn it off then I understand why they went back to the gate. Also his unwillingness to follow rules makes him an undesirable passenger and I would want his ass off my flight to. You don’t want people like that on your flight. I am glad they kicked Josh off. He is a complete D bag to me now.

  18. junk573r says:

I’m sort of surprised they allow drinking or intoxication of any kind of flights anymore. The majority of minor incidences on flights seem to always include some note the instigator had been drinking. Flying is such a high stress experience anymore, why fuel the fire with booze?

  19. Jo says:

Oh no! Someone had the nerve to tell him to shut down his dingle berry? The nerve. ::eye roll::

The rules apply to you too Douchey McDouchenozzle.

  20. Jay says:

Totally agree with the flight attendant here. Why do people think the rules don’t apply to them? If you haven’t even got off the ground and the passenger is being that beligerent, I can see wanting to get him off the plane before you’re stuck with him for the whole flight. The airline has the right to refuse service to unruly passengers.

  21. Attagirl says:

Why is it that some actors have this overly inflated sense of their importance in the world? It’s not like he’s a major personage on the world stage or even a superstar actor, yet he behaves like everyone should cater to his every whim because he’s “so important”. What a dickwad, I hope he’s put on the no-fly list.

  22. Cheyenne says:

Well, the airline could have done one of three things:

    1) Return to the gate and kick him off the plane

    2) Confiscate his Blackberry and arrest him when the plane landed

    3) Throw him and his Blackberry out of the aircraft at 35,000 feet

Personally, I wish they had chosen #3 and taught this asshole a lesson. But I think they made the right decision.

  23. bagladey says:

Josh is a fool and an idiot, and NO it was not heavy-handed on the part of the captain to return to the gate. Why risk taking the problem passenger, just so that they can maybe create a disturbance or be a nuisance for the entire flight?

  24. Boromir's bytch says:

Flight attendant didn’t overact. Just followed procedure. Flight crew did what they were required to do to ensure the safety of all the passengers. Josh was being a tool. At the point where he refused a direct order from the FA he was considered a flight risk. It wasn’t a request to turn his phone off, it was a command. You don’t get a choice to comply. I’m sure he knew it, too.

  25. tracking says:

No overreaction, just following the rules. He’s a first-class prick.

  26. whitedaisy says:

Not excessive; how do you suggest they would have enforced their request to him to turn it off? Remove it by force?
With the potential for interference with the plane’s communication/control systems, it is a health and safety issue and they had no other options.
He is an a**hole and it didn’t help him that his public relations person offered the apology that he should have made for himself.

  27. london says:

I work in an airport, and the flying public seeems to think that becuase they’ve purchased an airline ticket, it gives them the right to treat everyone from the ticket agents to airline crew like garbage. I have never come across so many angry, rude, and entitled people in my life.

Anyone who is stupid enough to disrespect airline crew (on the plane, no less) by not following simple rules should be thrown off. I am all for the airline on this one. Just because you buy a ticket does not give you carte blanche. There are rules to be followed.

No shoes, no shirt, no service!

No turn off electronic devices when the flight attendent repeatedly asks you to do so? Get off the plane, please!

  28. Hollowdoll says:

What a putz. They shouldn’t have gone back to the gate though. I like confiscation and major fine. Hell even ban him from fly that airline again.
They shouldn’t have made everyone more late they they already were.

  29. bellaluna says:

His Ryan Reynolds “I’m the shit” side is showing, and it is ugly.

  30. Ron says:

What makes him so special? I fly quite a bit between first and coach depending on the trip. I watched this guy in first class get into a bitching match with the Flight Bag over his phone being turned off and they theatened to turn bak to the gate. That’s when the passengers in first class told the douchetard to turn of his f*cking phone. Finally he did. Flying is such a pain in the ass anymore, you don’t need Josh Douchemel, or as I like to call him budget Ryan Reynolds, to not turn off his damn phone. I hope he gets a huge fine for this.

  31. Andi says:

Almost every flight I take has some jerk who thinks the rules don’t apply to him or her re: electronic devices. I’ve heard people deny their device is electronic. I’m glad they threw him off the flight, and if I was on that flight, I would gladly be delayed if that meant the jerk had to be removed, especially if he was a Hollywood “star” who is used to having people cater to every whim.

  32. Jaxx says:

He must have acted REALLY rude for the attendant to take that step. And I mean rude. Believe me, they don’t want to delay the flight if they don’t have to. He forced the issue or he would not have been escorted off the flight. Don’t people understand that electronic interference puts everyone in danger? I’m sure this was explained to him and he just didn’t care. He thought he was too big a deal to have to follow the rules. They taught him otherwise. Should have arrested him too. Dickwad.

  33. Sara says:

Darn, I think he is super hot, but not as much after reading this! Cocky is not cute. Isn’t it crazy that a really good looking person can actually start to look ugly if they have a bad holier than thou attitude?

  34. @Ziggy says:

Not trying to be a jerk, but BlackBerry has two capital B’s.

  35. Praise St. Angie! says:

if there had been an air marshal on the flight, he likely would have been arrested. if he refuses to comply, they do the next best thing. return to the gate and let the marshal/police handle it from there.

I don’t think they overreacted at all. rules are in place for a reason.

  36. Wicked SteppMom says:

Wow! I used to think he was so hot, but have been sad to learn that he’s just an arrogant douche. Hell yeah, throw him off the plane…and keep him out of Kentucky, we have enough idiots here.

  37. stripper mistress says:

He was probably texting one of stripper misrtresses- the flight attendant should have understood how important Josh’s texts are to him. Too bad they didn’t confiscate the phone-in probably had some interesting stuff on there.

  38. Lori says:

I think he’s lucky — if that were you or me, we’d be in jail right now.

  39. OXA says:

Selfish and disrespectful of EVERYONE on the planes & at the airport who were all inconvenienced.
From now on he deserves to be fully screened & cavity searced each time he flies.

  40. jzhz says:

He is the douche version of Timothy Olyphant.

  41. aenflex says:

Fuck that! About time someone starts treating these celebs just like anyone else. Bastard shoulda went to jail!

  42. K says:

Consider how many asshat people flight attendants and crew deal with every day. Multiply that by some minor dick celebrity who won’t follow Rule #2 of flying, and of course they’ll do something dumb like this. I think he was an ass. Turn off the Blackberry, read freakin’ Sky Mall until after take off, and then you can sext your stripper misstress.

I bet he releases a statement about the incident making himself out to be a victim of over-zealous flight measures.

  43. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    Let’s spank him!

  44. Someone Else says:

So with this action, can we make 2011 the year of “Just Because You’re Rich and Famous, Doesn’t Mean You’re Exempt”?

    (Side eye to Charlie Sheen.)

And from what I’ve seen, Duhamel have always come across as an arrogant ass.

  45. Bronwyn says:

I’m confused, what is “all Kanye”? Aside from his generally being an ass, I don’t recall ever hearing of him being an ass on a flight. Perhaps, I’m ill-informed? Just wondering about the relevance of that comment.

I don’t think they were over-reacting. People need to grow up and stop being so self-involved. Air travel is not like hopping in a car and driving somewhere. We’ve got the continual threat of someone trying to blow it up, or flying the plane into something.

For a short period of time you have to follow rules and you can’t be bothered to do it? I really hope they billed him with the cost of that little detour as the airlines have done in the past.

  46. anonymei says:

I disagree with you, Kaiser. Not an over-reaction at all. Cell phones can cause interference. He would not turn off his phone, so the pilot could not take off. No choice but to go back to the gate. He is a dbag.

  47. moocowhead says:

If I were on that flight, I’d be glad he was thrown off. Do I want my life endangered because some idiot won’t turn off his fucking phone? No.

  48. K-MAC says:

    all parties involved suck….

  49. chasingadalia says:

Kaiser – it would have been a security risk to have the air marshal take him off, because no one on flights except the pilot, etc, are supposed to know who s/he is. By exposing himself as air marshal, he would have put the plane at risk – because god forbid someone dangerous was on the plane, they could take him out.

  50. Madison says:

I agree Kaiser. Get the air marshall to confiscate the phone and get the plane in the air, don’t delay the plane because of one stupid idiot. If some stupid actor won’t turn the phone off take it away from him and keep the plane flying.

  51. Jeri says:

They should have confiscated his BlackBerry and not given it back to him (or ship it some time later). Risk of having your phone/BlackBerry taken may get people to comply, same thing with using while driving, if you’re caught you should loose the sucker (at least for a while). Let there be consequences.

  52. candy says:

He’s an idiot and no doubt pissed that his wife is getting ready to leave him. Either that or he has blue balls because she won’t have sex with him – because she’s getting ready to dump his dumb @ss… Com’on Fergie, take care of biz!

  53. TXCinderella says:

He probably thinks that he is so good looking and famous that the rules don’t apply to him. So sick of people who think they are entitled.

  54. Isabel says:

Not an over reaction, are you kidding me? That crap can interfere with air traffic signals. Some f*cker who can’t follow the rules everyone else has to (for safety of ALL on board, no less) deserves this to happen. I do not think it’s just JD here, though. Sure celebrities have entitled attitudes b/c often people do cater to them, I have noticed that people in general are exceedingly more rude, almost aggressively so- in public now. It’s truly depressing and a huge reason I hate traveling. You see it a lot more.I had some total type A prick next to me pounding out a long text and he was astonished when i turned to him and said ‘they announced you need to turn that off. Now. ‘ he said something rude and I said ‘Whatever. The plane is not going to crash b.c you need to send a #$#@$ text. I’ll flag down the flight crew and you won’t have a choice’ he did after that. Tried to shove his arm on the arm rest at me the rest of the flight but I could give a crap. I never use them anyway, lol.

  55. Po says:

If he can’t follow directions on the ground, he probably won’t follow them in the air either. In my opinion he should have been thrown off of the plane and I wouldn’t mind the delay. I don’t want to fly with people like that.

  56. Cruisin_Through says:

Throwing him off the plane probably was overkill, but It’s hard to fault the flight attendant if she asked him 3 times. He was daring her and he lost, so I say, good for her.

  57. Novaraen says:

From what I understand…cell phones and electronic devices are not nearly strong enough to interfere with the planes controls or readings. STILL…it is the rule and Josh should have cut the crap and turned his Blackberry off. It’s only really for take off anyway and he could have then turned it back on. No big deal. He’s an idiot and made a TON of enemies acting like a stupid douchenozzle.

  58. echolocate says:

Not a Fergie fan, but she doesn’t seem like the sort of person who would pull this kind of stunt herself. Taunting and laughing at the female flight attendant sounds a little misogynistic. I wonder how he handles being less famous and wealthy than his wife on a daily basis. I could imagine him reminding Fergie that he’s the one with the looks.

I also wonder if he was texting Fergie at the time. My guess? No. He was probably furiously re-negotiating the fee per hour for his hooker, because JOSH DUHAMEL ZE GREAT is not about to pay top dollar for some hooker to just sit around in his hotel room watching “Maury.”

  59. hairball says:

I was flying out of Portland on Thanksgiving evening and I was in the airport book store when I heard some guy SHRIEKING at full force to a staff person at the gate desk: “YOU LIE! YOU LIE!” Apparently he was enraged because of flight delay.

Regular passengers started walking over to help if needed and I swear, within about 1 minute, 6 police officers were there.

The guy was not from this country (I assume because he had a really strong asian accent) and of course was taken away by security with his family (looking completely ashamed) in tow.

They don’t f*ck around at the airport anymore. And they shouldn’t.

Flying sucks. You basically screw yourself everytime you click ‘buy tickets’ as you are at the mercy of the airlines. I get it. But rules are rules and I agree, get off my f*cking plane if you’re too big of baby to follow the rules.

  60. Zoe says:

I remember seeing this guy in LA once, and of all the countless celebrities I saw during those years, he was by far the most arrogant jerk of them all. I’m glad I don’t have to share a city with him anymore. Seriously, this guy is a major jerk and I am completely unsurprised by this. People probably missed their flight over him, or anyone who decides not to follow the rules. They are in place for a reason. Phones are supposed to be turned off during takeoff because they can interfere with the signals of pilots upon take-off, this is a security issue. The people on that flight deserve a serious apology from him.

  61. Whatever says:

Maybe an overreaction, but really anyone who has ever flown on a plane knows that you can’t use electronic devices during take off. Another entitled douche who thinks the rules don’t apply and they are more important than everyone else. It gets old. Great, you are in a few shitty movies. We’re all impressed, now turn off the f*cking phone!

  62. luls says:

oh no! Fergie is starting to go down the Kim K route! Just look at that 1st pic of her!!!! :O

As for Josh….well this isnt really surprising. Hes always seemed like a tool :S

  63. bellaluna says:

@ jzhz – Bite your tongue! Timothy is w-a-y- nicer, better looking, and better behaved than this ass-hat.

@ Bronwyn – “all Kanye” is when a seemingly talented person gets so full of themselves and their own sense of importance, they explode their self-entitled butt-headed-ness all over anyone near them. Alcohol consumption generally makes the explosion worse.

  64. CoolWhipLite says:

Maybe working on his latest movie with Shia LaDouche (he’s batsh*t crazy) is rubbing off on him….

  65. Feebee says:

They may have been following the rules but then the rules are the ass. I’m so glad that LGA was having such a slow day that it could allow the plane to be returned to the gate (probably delaying another plane from berthing) while this tosser was ejected from the plane and then find another take off slot for the flight.

If there were no air marshalls on the flight as I understand it the air stewards can “detain” a passenger. Confiscation of the device and a set of handcuffs and they’d be on their way.

While I think JD is 100% in the wrong some flight attendants also have a bad attitude and it is a highly-combustible mix. Yes, yes, I know they deal with 100 assholes a day but if you can’t handle it, do something else.

  66. sickofit says:

who is he? hes a husband of some singer, so what? he must be really stupid and this is the light that shines on fergie…
she should divorce him in a minute if she has a single brain cell left.

  67. e-non says:

was he an asshole — unquestionably, with a profound sense of entitlement.

he’ll be lucky if he isn’t put on a watch list. because that’s what the national security state does; it is the biggest swinging dick and is going to prove it to you every opportunity it gets.

  68. Ruffian9 says:

I’m pretty sure that a simple handheld device cannot interrupt or interfere with the plane’s communication systems. That said; Follow the damn rules or get the f**k off the plane. Airline staff did right here.

  69. Missy says:

Novarean, one cellphone may not interfere, but several might. And if this idiot was allowed to kepp his on, then that would have allowed everyone to use theirs, and then it’s a flight risk. Also flight attendants are watched like HAWKS, and if a DOT/TSA rep was aboard the flight, and saw that the FA allowed this guy a free pass, her job would be on the line. I was an FA and dealing with dummies like this was one of the major reasons I quit.

  70. Michelle says:

You used the word “Jagoff” and it made me smile! I’ve only heard it here in my hometown! Are you from Pittsburgh?

  71. Jennifer says:

The mere fact he is married to that dirty looking skank should cement his status as an absolute arsehole

  72. original kate says:

he seems like a douchelord and if this story is true then he should have been thrown off the flight. also, fergie’s face is absolutely terrifying. seriously – the implants, collagen, botox, etc. have made her look like a melted candle.

  73. Newyorking says:

What an idiot! Once a guy sitting near me on a flight would not turn off his phone despite the flight attendant’s asking him to a few times. I told him to shut it off, and his response was that he didn’t mind turning it off but the person on the other end would not stop talking. I was like, that person is not on this plane, you are. Such ignorant pricks. The cellphone interferes with plane controls – everyone knows that, dufus.

  74. Jag says:

He’s a jerk. That said, all the flight attendants that I encountered on the last two flights I took were horrible – and I’m a sugar-sweet Southern gal when I travel – so when I read the title, my instinct was that he was wronged. I think both sides were wrong in this case.

  75. tango says:

It’s too much of a safety risk for Josh, the crew and any passengers to try to get him to turn over his phone when he isn’t even willing to turn it off. They could get into a physical scuffle and why put anyone at risk? If he’s not willing to turn off the phone what makes anyone think he’d hand it over instead? No, I could see that whole situation going badly. So since they were on the ground, it’s better to turn the plane around and drop him off at the gate.

  76. Lia says:

The Blackberrys interfere with the instruments in the cockpit. That’s why we are asked to turn them off. The fact that Duhamel is an ignorant ass doesn’t mean that everyone on that plane should have been placed at risk. Everyone is aware of how we need to cooperate because there are so many other forces trying to bring our planes down. The last thing we need is some inflated celebrity acting like an entitled jerk, risking the safety of everyone else. Once they were in the air, what other kind of behavior could they have expected from him? They did the absolute right thing and they should be applauded for it.

  77. Shelley says:

He absolutely should have been kicked off and I hope penalized/fined. His behaviors, especially if he was even slightly drunk, would only have worsened during the flight. Creep.

  78. Ohforf says:

Lia, Mythbusters did an episode where they disproved the “interference” reason for that rule. Zero truth in it. Sorry.

  79. Dil says:

They were completely right! What a DB!

And if I was in the airplane I woulnd mind at all in hava a delay!

Is not the attendance fault is HIS fault!

  80. Nancito says:

Kaiser wrote – “Here’s a thought: why not just get the air marshal to confiscate Josh’s Blackberry for the length of the flight, then arrest him for harassment or whatever once the flight lands?”

It’s obvious that the world would be a far better place if Kaiser were running things.

  81. pissyopants says:

    wtf FERGIE?!

  82. sunny says:

He looks like he has downs syndrome. Maybe that’s why he can’t understand basic instructions.

  83. poopie says:

I love my cell just like anyone else, but some people treat it like a bodily appendage that would hurt if removed! it’s SOOOO irritating to see people walk around clutching their phones like it’s a lifeline and if removed they would dissolve into the wicked west puddle. gee, what did people hold on to 20 yrs ago. hmmm… need to make that ’emergency ”hey, watcha doin’?” phone call? PAY PHONE !

  84. slymm27 says:

aww….the sext message he got from the other skinny blond ho was so racy, dude needed to reply asap, as he couldnt be caught doing that when he landed. Well, guess he will just have to go right back into her bed since he didnt fly anymore. I say he wins.

  85. scotchy says:

as someone that travels by planes all the time, i have to say a lot of airline staff have serious attitude problems, and tend to be quite rude to passengers, it sounds like a clash of ego’s on this one and during the holiday season with stress increased they all over reacted.

  86. Strawberry says:

Ok, someone’s probably alraedy mentioned it but it’s likely he was probably drinking in the airport lounge and was thus completely wasted, and belligerent with airline staff. Don’t be a c*ck Josh, and own up to it.

  87. JulieM says:

Got to agree with Missy@70, a former flight attendant. The pilot/FA did exactly the right thing and it’s douche Duhamel who owes everyone an apology. I don’t want to fly anywhere with anyone who refuses to turn their electronic junk off. What else will they refuse to do in flight when everyone else on board is a captive audience? One device not interfering with cockpit equipment, OK, I’ll buy that. But everyone doing it, no way. You can hear your cellphone interference when you are on your computer. I’ve also heard it on TV during live interviews. I’m sure you’ve all heard it as well. Sorry, the airline did the right thing, even if the flight attendant was surly.

I think it is interesting they mention how he was in the bar watching a basketball game…sort of implies that he was drinking. Which i am sure he was, but interesting they put that in the story. Probably had a lot to do with it.

  89. viper says:

Good for the airline; its a serious matter when taken off and landing is involved. Just think how one mishap in naviagtion can cause a plane to over shoot the run way and crash or delay a take off and ram into ground once the run way is gone- all because the cpu was off by a decimal. People should remember they are flying in a feul soaked tin can with paper sensitive wings!

  90. Melbe says:

What a toxic man. Hire your own plane next time. After all the fuss of just getting through the gate, and this idiot wants to challenge the crew once he’s made it to the plane? I’m thrilled to see him escorted off. Possibly if more FA’s take a stand against bad behavior and actually enforce the rules like this woman did, flying might become civilized again. One can only dare to dream.

  91. mary says:

Cell phones can cause safety issues on a plane. If the flight attendant had allowed him to keep using his phone she would be endangering the lives all the passengers and crew. Not to mention the other people who are flying in the area. The right decision was made. Flight safety is not something you can take lightly.
Also Air Marshalls rarely fly on any given flight. They will usually only be in the air when there is a reason such as an important person flying (not some douchbag celeb).
People should respect the fact that it is not the FA’s that make these decisions. It is the regulatory bodies which govern air travel safety. All the FA was trying to do is make the flight safer for everyone on board. I think she should be commended for that.

  92. AsheNDust says:

I work for an airline and the decision to go back to the gate is never a light one. But when a passenger won’t listen to the flight attendant they have to be taken off. If he’s not listening to her over a little thing such as turning off a cell phone why would he listen to her if/when something happens. It’s for his safety and the safety of the passengers around him.

Airlines lose money when they return to the gate, even if they go back out and make it to their final destination. It requires more gas, more pay for the crew, etc so the airline is losing money the whole time. So yeah they don’t take this stuff lightly by no means.

  93. Zvonk says:

There is no proof that cell phones can cause safety problems on planes. In fact, Boeing have tested their aircraft extensively, and found no evidence to support a ban. Some non-US airlines actually have micro cells installed in their aircraft so that passengers can use their cell phones during flight. So please, none of this “the selfish arsehole is putting my life at risk” nonsense.

Having said that, if an airline has a policy of no cell phones, then as a passenger you are bound by those terms and conditions, and should switch it off.

I have to agree with Feebee about flight attendants. They are often rude and high on the limited amount of “power” they possess. Their attitude often rivals that of over-entitled “D” list celebrities.

  94. fwozbo says:

Pilot to co-pilot (on intercom), are we ready for take-off, yes, (interruption), hey this is Fergie, Josh can you get me Kentucky bourbon when you get there, ….what the he…. is going on here, oops, sorry wrong channel, are we still ready for take-off?

Sorry Zvonk, I work with Boeing and they are really wimps at doing their electro-magnetic interference(EMI) testing. They try to by-pass it every time. That is why they suck at making parts and outsource it. They can put an airplane together but they can barely put an electrical system together.

But even so, EMI can disrupt a system even if the 2 frequencies are not the same.

Run your microwave/hairdryer/vacuum while you are on your cordless phone.

  95. Dawn says:

Okay so I scanned most of the posts and there are a lot of haters out there. First, we weren’t there so we can’t be sure what exactly happened. If he was being an @SS then he must have been having a bad day. Yes, he had to have been doing something for them to kick him off the flight even with that said I have something to say about him.

While filming here in NM for both Transformer movies he was on his best behavior and yes it’s probably due to the fact he was “working” and on a set where Michael Bay wouldn’t have tolerated that B$. I have to make mention out of all the cast (and I won’t mention names) he was the most humble and down to earth person you’d ever want to meet.

When filming was done he was back in his hotel room. He wasn’t partying, getting speeding tickets and picking up the local chicks. Unlike some of his castmates and production crew. He really came off to everyone as a nice guy.

So I do find it hard to believe the stories of infidelity and being an @ss. Like I said maybe he was in this case while on this flight.

  96. Crash2GO2 says:

When you are flying, you need to accept the fact that you have given the reins up to the people you have paid to get you to your destination, and abide by their rules. Otherwise rent a car and don’t selfishly inconvenience others who have also paid good money to the airline to get where they need to go.

    It’s common courtesy.

  97. Alexa says:

ugh…What a DOUCHE!! Never liked him nor found him the least bit attractive. His face is not at all masculine looking.

  98. Mizz Tickles says:

jd has a serious case of bitchface.

  99. kkassa says:

the flight attendant absolutely did the right thing the only person to blame is josh

  100. icantbelievethis says:

If he wanted to be catered to he should’ve shelled out the $$ for a private plane.

  101. LittleDeadGirl says:

Why can’t the protocal be to taser his ass and tie and gag him up for the remainder of the flight? What a douchebag I’d have been soooo pissed to have been on that flight but I have to say it’s nice for once to see a celebrity treated like the rest of us.

  102. Isobel says:

What airlines was it? I will absolutely fly them.

  103. jzhz says:

@bellaluna – that was my point…he’s the puffy, douche version of Olyphant (the nice guy).

  104. Jo says:

So, Dawn, how much did the JD PR machine pay you to write that post?

  105. LittleOat says:

    What an ass.

  106. rottenkitty says:

Well, this has been hashed over, but the flight attendant isn’t just a glorified waitress/waiter. He/she’s part of the safety crew for that flight.

When they ask you to do something, you’re supposed to comply. It’s just that simple. You don’t comply, and the flight crew determines whether you can continue on that flight. (I’m certain there’s protocol involved here. No one wants to turn a plane around after its left the terminal.)

Once you’re on the plane, the flight crew is responsible for the safety of that flight, and what they say goes. What kind of tool is so attached to his tweet that he is indifferent to the safety of everyone else on that plane?

  107. DetRiotgirl says:

Am I the only one who noticed that this article is tagged “josh hartnett”? Lol, yeah, I think that’s about right too. He’s definitely a “who?” kind of celeb.

  108. constance says:

My brother is a pilot for AA. He has always told me “Never treat an airplane as infallible.” “Never f*#k with the FAA”

FAA says that no mobile device is to be allowed because if the airplane has any EI shielding errors, (most commercial planes are old and past their mechanical limitations) interference could lead to failures causing death. Personally, I’d like not to die because some a$$hat HAD to send a MMS of his “little man” to some skank.

I’d take an additional 15 mins on the ground over the 15 second death dive to it.

  109. Majosha says:

    @constance: Word.

  110. Aspie says:

What a jerk – the fight crew did the right thing. No one deserves to have their flight delayed even further over some self-important over-entitled bratty actor. What he did was a huge deal and he deserved what happened to him.

  111. MissyA says:

As a service industry schlub – my heart goes out to the flight attendants. They have to deal with massive entitlement issues everyday on every flight.

People are collectively getting ruder and more self-important. I bet money that even if he wasn’t a “celebrity”, Duhamel would still try to pull this crap. He seems the self-absorbed type.

  112. coucou says:

Former flight attendant here, and i am so relieved that most of the comments are in favor…it’s true, stews can be bitchy, they have been to me, and i’m sure in my 12 years of flying, i served a few mental bitch slaps with my 5am coffee service…but still…nothing worse than seeing a great looking guy – or gal for that matter – act like a prick, especially when it’s unwaranted and breaking the law.

Yeah, he and Fergs should get their own plane, but i’m not sure if the cargo could handle their excess egos.

  113. Meanchick says:

What? A self-entitled, egomaniac jizz-bag of an “actor” misbehaving when he has to follow rules? Why, that’s just unheard of! Fergie, you’ve got a real Prince there Missy. Let’s see how Mr. “Ball-Lint” face like riding Greyhound next time!

  114. Thank you for the good writeup. It actually used to be a amusement account it. Look complicated to far brought agreeable from you! By the way, how could we keep up a correspondence?

  115. Sandy says:

No 1: the air marshal is not a high school principal and shouldn’t have his cover blown just so he can deal with an overgrown toddler.

No 2: if such extremes aren’t taken, then people would think it was o.k. to treat flight attendants and what little authority they have as a complete joke.

Is it an extreme move? Yes. Was is unnecessary? No. If it were me, I’d have banned his A from that entire line.
