Is the coverage of the Brangelina twins over the top?

It’s all about the Brangelina twins today, and since Angelina reportedly wants to shed that moniker I’ve decided to use it as much as possible. It’s a lot easier than calling them Knox and Vivienne, which sounds suspiciously similar to the names J.Lo chose for her fraternal boy and girl twins, Max and Emme.

There are new details emerging about the birth of the twins that seems like way too much information. People are clamoring for details and Brad and Angelina have only so much control over what leaks out, but I think that birth room scenes are privileged information despite all the “Baby Story” episodes I watched on TLC when I was pregnant.

People Magazine has a whole section of their website dedicated to the birth of the twins with a big red banner across the top in all-caps italics that reads “ANGELINA & BRAD’S TWINS ARE BORN!” and it’s really too much. They had the babies, we’ll get to see them soon, good for them.

Brad “Very Emotional” at Birth, Angelina was talking and laughing during C-section
Angelina’s doctor revealed in his statement that Brad was “very emotional” when the babies were born. What dad isn’t, even for the fifth and sixth child? Dr. Sussman gave a lot of information to the press and I’m not sure I would want all those details made public if it was my family even though it’s all perfectly normal stuff.

During the labor and delivery, the couple “were talking, they were together,” Dr. Michel Sussmann told reporters outside Fondation Lenval Hospital in Nice, France, where twins Vivienne Marcheline and Knox Leon were born on Saturday. “It was an epidural, so [Angelina] was awake and speaking and laughing. They were happy.”

Pitt never left Jolie’s side – “he was my assistant!” Sussmann said jokingly – and even cut the babies’ umbilical cords.

“He was … perfectly calm, totally determined, very pleased to be at the birth of his children, very moved and very emotional,” said Sussmann.

Asked whether the birth had been a textbook delivery, Sussmann replied, “absolutely no problems.”

[From People.com]

Dr. Sussmann said Angelina will stay in the hospital for a few more days, which is how they do it in Europe and that “it isn’t like in the United States, where the patients go home after three days. ” He later clarified that the babies are in good health at 5 pounds each, but that they need to gain some more weight before they go home and are likely to stay in the hospital for about a week.

Dr. Sussmann also told the press that Angelina’s c-section was moved up ten days “for the mother’s comfort.”

The Associated Press reports that Brad Pitt chose to give the French daily newspaper the Nice-Matin the scoop on the birth because he wanted a local paper to have the story before the other outlets.

The mayor of Nice held a press conference and gushed in his praise for Angelina and Brad. He said it was a great honor that such big stars had chosen his city to give birth. He stood on the steps of the hospital while holding Knox’s birth certificate and said:

“On behalf of the inhabitants of Nice, I congratulate the happy parents, the most famous couple of the world who have chosen our city for this happy event.”

He also called the birth “a pride to Nice and all its citizens.” [Details From People.com]

It’s all a bit over the top, but congratulations to Brad and Angelina and it is kind of amazing that they had twins to add to their brood of four other children – whether they had IVF or not. And let’s wish them well for their babies no matter how you feel about them personally. They’re certainly willing to be open with the press and there are millions of people who want to read every little tidbit about them. Maybe they think if they open up all the doors and unlock everything people will get bored and go home. It’s pretty damn comfortable and perfect-looking in their house, though.

  1. someone else says:

Angelina’s lack of healthy diet has now affected her babies, hopefully this will be a wake up call, but i highly doubt it.

  2. Scott F. says:

I’m just waiting for them to wheel out the James Bond super-villain style laser to etch the birth announcement permanently into the moon’s surface. At this point, that’s literally the only way this could be more over-promoted.

  3. Kolby says:

I think it’s over the top if you frequent gossip sites, read People, and watch only E! It’s quite easy to avoid the coverage if you wanted to. I think so, anyway.

  4. Anni says:

as long as no one eats the placenta, i´m fine with the coverage.

  5. huh says:

    What? Angelina was pregnant?

  6. Trace says:

Kolby – I completely agree with you. If you are a frequenter of celebrity news sites, then the coverage is over the top. But, this is the media’s own doing – isn’t this what celebrity news and gossip sites live for? And it doesn’t help matters when some of the key participants in the whole thing – the doctor, the mayor, etc. keep giving out information. You really can’t blame the new parents. I’m sure they are too busy with caring for the newborns, recovering, plus having to juggle their older kids…at least, I would hope that’s what they are focusing on anyways.

  7. Diva says:

Of course it’s over the top… it’s a celebrity couple having instantly celebrity babies!

I still read them all, though, lol.

And, um, 5 pounds each is pretty normal for twins, someone else, so your anti-Angelina rhetoric makes no sense here. 😛

  8. Syko says:

I don’t think it’s over the top. I get most of my celebrity news from the internet and from my son’s absolute insistence on watching TMZ (ugh!). On the main pages for AOL and Comcast, there is one line indicating the babies were born, no more or less than was given to Nicole and Keith’s birth, or Jamie Lynn’s, or Tony Snow’s death, or any other newsy type of thing. If you go looking for it, there’s probably a lot of information. But I haven’t been looking, so don’t feel over-inundated at all.

I also don’t think Brad assisting at the birth, and cutting the cords, is too much information. I think that’s a pretty nifty procedure, actually. Women seem to do most of the birthing, so anything that includes the dad and makes him a part of the procedure is good, in my opinion.

And for the life of me, I can’t see how “Knox and Vivienne” are suspiciously similar to “Max and Emme”, but whatever you say.

  9. Linda says:

The coverage of Brangelina is way over the top – it’s too much and the way people are reacting to this birth is absurd.

  10. Laila says:

Angelina’s camp has ochestrated all this. People has a red banner because they are the ones going to get the pictures. They need to increase the hype for their magazines to sell. I hope Brangelina do not call for privacy because that would be hypocritical. Most of their actions are hypocritical. The media is the one building this into a big deal. Of course and Angelina’s PR team as well. I am sure that doctor is speaking with their blessings.

  11. Mairead says:

LOL Scott – don’t be giving them ideas 😆 But give Pax a few years, that boy looks like he has the quiet determination to develop such a publicity-seeking missile 😉

Personally I think it’s a little bit too much information, but nobody made me read the article. I understand why the doctor gave such a detailed statement though – it means that it’s less valuable for any unscrupulous employees to sell the information, as all press outlets already have it.

And I’ve noticed in other threads that people are complaining about the Mayor.

Lads – that’s what he’s supposed to do. Use any positive news for his city and region, get his face on the news, bolster the political profile of the area further.
And if it helps extra funding to flow in through increased tourism revenue and/or central government funding. Then so be it.

And I know this is patronising, but anyone who thinks differently is utterly naive about local government.

  12. Celebitchy says:

@Skyko: I am having trouble remembering the names, and all I can think of is “Max and Emme” instead of “Knox and Vivienne.” It’s that the two names end in the same letter for both the boy and the girl, which is why they strike me as similar. I am not knocking them, they’re cute names.

I’m probably annoyed at all the coverage because I have to write about it and we try and do longer stories here. So when there’s a new story that she’s doing fine or whatever, I’m like “Another one? When should I cover this?”

  13. geekazoid says:

I fid this all discusting. But I already expressed my view on the last bragelina thread celeb has. UGH! It’s lik you guys do it to annoy me. :p

  14. Leandra says:

I would never blame Brad or Angelina for this intense media coverage. They go out of their way to avoid all this publicity. They seem to be finding ways to avoid some of the pap frenzy, renting the Chateau and travelling by helicopters seems to be a great start. They got ownership of Internet domain names for the twins, great idea there to avoid profit by unscrupulous individuals hoping to cash in.

  15. Syko says:

Ya know, Geek, every day there are threads on here that I don’t really care to read about or comment on. So guess what? I skip them. You could skip the Brad/Angelina posts yourself, and save yourself a lot of annoyance.

I’m tired of the haters and the sneering at any of us who try to maintain a modicum of common sense.

  16. Laila says:

Leandra, I disagree, Brangelina are doing all they can to fuel the circus. Press conferences, mayor showing birth certificates etc. Those are not actions of people who want privacy.

CB you are right, the two sets of names are similar. Brangelina carry a lot of hype. From their doctor giving press conferences to the mayor showing us birth certificates, it is all too much. Why can’t they just quitetly give birth and dedicate this time to their family. Why is Brad Pitt calling up the media to tell them the babies ar born? I don’t understand these people but I am liking them less and less.

  17. Celebitchy says:

Syko you are too nice. That geek guy didn’t even spell “disgusting” right. I’m sorry for stirring up shit with this post, I shouldn’t have started it at all, but it really occurred to me when I was writing up all these small details and watching them unfold during the day. And the points that this is celeb-centric and helps sell the photos for People is very valid.

  18. I choose me says:

I’m not turning in my BADette card anytime soon but I actually kinda agree with Scott F. in this instance. It all feels a bit much. I mean that’s some serious ass-kissing there on the mayor’s part but whatever, as long the babies are healthy and safe. The hype will probably die down in a day or two and then the tabs will go from congratulating them to making shit up about them once again.

  19. Laila says:

By the way, I read somewhere that the birth was brought forward because Angelina was getting weaker, I hope she is Ok and the babies too. I hope she takes this time to bond with her family instead of milking the birth for PR like they seem to be doing.

CB, you are right to point out that things are over the top, the public already realise this and that is why it doesn’t have most hits on people’s site, which is covering it like the second coming.

  20. daisy424 says:

Laila – Nice-Matin’s assitant editor, Olivier Biscaye, says “It was Brad Pitt who chose to give the scoop to Nice-Matin. He said to the doctor that the local media should be the first informed about the birth.”

Adds the editor, “Nice-Matin has always chosen not to play the game of paparazzi towards the celebrities who have chosen to live in the region. We respect them, and they do likewise. We let them have a peaceful life. This why I think Brad and Angelina have chosen to make this gift to Nice-Matin.”

  21. Megan says:

I think there is more coverage for them than there has been for other celebrity births. When Jessica Alba gave birth and when J.Lo gave birth it was just one headline: Yay they gave birth, this is how much the baby(ies) weighed, the name(s) are Soandso and Soandso. But somehow Brangelina are treated like Gods, and I just don’t get it. I don’t understand why these people are treated like President and First Lady of the World. They just act in movies, mainly poor ones (although I do think Brad is a good actor). I mean did anyone actually think Mr and Mrs Smith was a good film? I just don’t understand why an actress giving birth is like the most important event of 2008. I really just don’t get it.

  22. geekazoid says:

Dah it’s not like that at all, I’m just not seeig why these two are looked at the way they are. What is it about them that get people like this? I am not a hater Im not on anyones side here Im just not seeing what the big deal is.

  23. Diva says:

You know what I don’t get? People getting so worked up over NOT liking them.

I can’t stand John Mayer, but I don’t go on and on about it every time he’s mentioned (which has been alot lately!) and I don’t wonder in amazement how anyone could like him since I don’t, either. I reserve that incredulousness for people who ever liked Charles Manson or Hitler.

Btw, I would LOVE it if some celebrity named their kid Soandso, lmao.

  24. Guest says:

I think that the coverage is over the top. I don’t agree that Brad and Angie try to be private. In all honesty the mayor and the doctor would not speak without the knowledge and consent of Brad and Angie. The mayor would have been invited and would have been given the OK to show the paps the birth certificates. Brad posed for a pictures on the front of the French paper (while saying that they had chosen the best doctor and hospital in the world – not an American but do you guys take offense to that?) and gave an exculsive interview about alot of details. In all honesty they could have made a statement to People Magazine and the doctor and the mayor and the French paper, etc. would not have to have been involved at all. This would have cut down on the amount of press they received. Jennifer Lozez could have done the same thing. The press where all over her and the hospital. But they stayed low key and only gave one statement to the press – we don’t have a clue what went on inside the delivery room and millions of her fans would have love to have know that. But Jennifer Lopez (over the top diva) actually kept her births private. Brad and Angie really court the press and love the attention it is obvious in what they do.

  25. Oooh noooo… the second by second coverage of ever fart was def. not TMI *giggles*

  26. janepitt says:

They live for the attention. At least she does. I know most people remember him as a private man who didn’t discuss his personal life. Once he got with the fame whore he would reveal the last time he pissed. For those who don’t want to hear anything negative, go to a fan site. Gossip blogs are not the exclusive domain for people who want to celebrity worship.

  27. Dingles says:

Geez, everyone acts like these two are freakin gods on earth. Yeah they’re two movie stars and great-looking people, but that’s it. The second coming of Christ wouldn’t get as much press as Angelina giving birth (because a woman giving birth hardly ever happens…). I’m over it.

  28. Anastasia says:

Guest, I guess you’ve missed all the coverage of the JLo twins like how they can’t keep any nannies employed, the twins never wear a single outfit twice and they are designer baby clothing with some single outfits worth as much as $1000?

You’re holding up these people as good examples?

    BWA!

  29. Anastasia says:

As for the coverage, I only go to celebitchy and dlisted. I don’t bother with the mainstream mags and blogs.

So this place and dlisted is the only place I even read about the births.

Shrug. It’s kind of hard to blame the media when no one holds a freaking gun to our heads and forces us to read or listen to the stuff.

  30. Lauri says:

@someone else: “Angelina’s lack of healthy diet has now affected her babies, hopefully this will be a wake up call, but i highly doubt it.”

How’s that again? It appears that she gave birth to two healthy infants, each weighing in at 5 pounds, which is excellent for twins. How has a poor diet affected them? For that matter, how do you know what her diet was?

Yours just seems to be a rather odd comment, and out of context with the story.

  31. Cari says:

@janepitt: It’s really obvious you do not care for AJ. Like Syko said earlier, just don’t read the AJ posts and don’t comment if she bothers you that much. You only appear to be a raging JA fan.

It is such a simple remedy.

    Just let it go… 🙄

  32. jinx says:

Angelina’s lack of healthy diet has now affected her babies, hopefully this will be a wake up call, but i highly doubt it. **

Are you a doctor, and when did you examine her for her health or lack there of?

It’s only covered in magazines specifically stalking them, like OK or in touch, people – or a bunch of entertainment blogs. Believe it’s barely going to hit any mainstream magazines. If you DON’T want to know about them, it’s more than easy to avoid.

  33. chrissymacq says:

i guess we call the kids Vioxx?

  34. janepitt says:

So typical of people in the loon world, you have the same argument, disdain for the whore that is Angelina, equals love for JA. Cari, it doesn’t work that way. Like I said go to a fan site if you want constant love and admiration for this freak. Because anytime I feel the need to make a comment about her I will.

  35. guest says:

The difference is that J-Lo stories are gossip and put in the press by a “source”. In Brad/Angie case Brad and Angie themselves are the ones giving the stories. Big difference. J-Lo does not give out much personal info Brad/Angie on the other hand do it all the time to feed the press.

  36. KERRI says:

I can’t get enough of these two. I absolutely love them. The only publicity they seek is for their charity work, nothing else. Now if you want to talk about over the top publicity seekers — Britney, Amy, Paris, Nicole, Lindsay…etc.

  37. Sandra says:

Why is angie staring seductively at brad instead of adoringly at shiloh like he is on the people baby cover? Also- what kind of freaks allow the mayor to have copies of their babies b.c.’s to show off on the hospital steps like a sideshow? Was there a cover charge?

  38. Anastasia says:

OMG Sandra, are you serious? Because a photo is one moment out of thousand and the photog probably took LOADS of pictures and decided to go with that one.

Damn, so if you dare to look lovingly at the father of your child instead of your child for half a second, you’re a bad mom? Count me as a bad mom, I guess. I’m sure I’ve spent a moment tearing my eyes away from my precious child to look at my man, LOL.

You Angelina Haters probably think she also caused the fall of Troy, global warming, the assassination of Lincoln, smallpox, ebola, you name it.

Get a grip. And get some meds. The hatred some of you feel for this woman you don’t know is WAY over the top, even for a celebrity gossip blog. I mean, I think Paris Hilton is just a waste of oxygen, but I don’t hyperventilate to post weird shit about her on every thread about her. As a matter of fact, you know what I do? I IGNORE any stories about her, because that’s about what she deserves. To be ignored. If you really hate Angelina so much you act this crazy about it, ignore her and all stories about her.

It really is that easy. And maybe you’ll feel better.

  39. Anastasia says:

Ah, I found this article interesting–all about how A&B held the media at bay throughout the pregnancy, quite the opposite of what A&B haters claim:

    http://www.jossip.com/now-that-angelina-jolie-has-given-birth-who-are-the-winners-and-losers-of-her-pregnancy-saga-20080714/

The last parts of the article:

Most of the tabloid press appears to have had zero insider access, despite the way the copy reads in their reports. While all the tabloids were in the game, In Touch had the most at stake; more so than any other weekly, they’ve treating the Brangelina saga as gospel. And while they may be able to walk away with having the news first, and debunking previous false reports that Jolie had given birth, that their first official birth report was that Jolie had twin girls is a stain on their voracious reporting.

Meanwhile, almost everybody else relied on official statements from the hospital, Jolie’s doctor, and Nice’s mayor; any ragtag reporter could’ve filed a report with that information.

The winner, then, in this saga? Brad and Angelina.

Shockingly, the couple has been able to hold the press at bay in the final weeks of her pregnancy. Little accurate information leaked out, and the speculation that did arrive often reeked of fairy tale. So kudos to the new parents, who really did execute a blackout coup like no other.

  40. Tracy says:

Is it a contest-whoever has the most kids wins?

  41. deeanna says:

It is frightening how brad and angelina bring out the worst in people.

  42. Shay says:

Was it over the top? How many different ways can one say the word Yes? They’re acting like royalty gave birth.

Is it me or has twin births replaced the African orphans as celebrities designer attention getting children.

  43. Trashaddict says:

Of COURSE they’re like royalty giving birth, apparently these web sites are so popular because royalty is what we all crave, but monarchy is not really a very viable form of government any more. It’s kind of funny debating this issue on this website, of all places! We like to pick celebrities apart, build them up and tear them down, it’s just like grammar school. Except we can talk about them without having to face them the next day. My guilty pleasure. Hence my screen name.

  44. crazy fan says:

i happen to love this fascinating couple , so for me it’s never too much coverage, but they are the only people in Hollywood that peak my attention, i don’t care about any one else in HW.

  45. Lola says:

If Angelina was with BBT, she would not get any attention even if she gave birth to triplets in Guantanamo. If Brad was with Jessica Simpson, ditto. That is why am convinced that these two do everything for attention.

Besides, if they went to Nice without announcing that they were going there, had their babies and released a statement quietly, no doctors calling press conferences, I would respect them more. Every one of their actions screams ATTENTION!!!

I agree Jlo could have milked her twin birth like this, but seems she has more class than this two. It is not about skipping Brangelina threads, it is about having these two losers thrust in your face at every turn.

I wonder what they will do next for attention.

  46. geronimo says:

Completely and utterly over the top.
Completely and utterly avoidable if you don’t want to read about it.

  47. someone says:

Absolutely over the top..I was hoping when they went to France, I wouldn’t be bombarded by news of them every time I turned on my computer..no such luck..

  48. bros says:

give me a break about j lo having more class. please.

  49. Bodhi says:

    jlo? Class? Not so much…

Of course its over the top. Everyone knew it would be & its not like anyone expected anything less.

Like Anastasia said “If you really hate Angelina so much you act this crazy about it, ignore her and all stories about her. “ Unfortuantely thats just to much to ask from some nutters

  50. Sandra says:

Anastasia thinks i need to be medicated. Honey, re- read my post from last night- then re- read your reply- a diatribe that goes on and on …and on about things i never said or expressed. Don’t worry, the ambulance will be along any minute.

  51. Sandra says:

So, if you have a negative opinion of brangie you should’t post here? Why? I thought this was an entertaining forum for people to express their individual opinions. I come here to be amused by eveyone’s differing opininons. If only brangie lovers were allowed to post here, it would be really really really boring. Guess i was confused by the website name celebitcy.

  52. Kaiser/ Hippacrat says:

This is a particularly deranged thread (in a long history of deranged Brange threads)… and I have one question for all of the people whining about coverage.

Do you people have even a moderate understanding of celebutainment economics?

If you hate BP & AJ (and their children, for some horrible psychopathic reason) and you want to stop reading about them, stop reading about them. Stop commenting on them. Stop trolling, stop whining, stop the never-ending Pity Party. Just stop.

Less hits on the BP & AJ threads, and less comments on the threads will mean less coverage. The end. This is why *I* rarely read or comment on all of the Whinehouse, Hilton, Courtney Love, Ritchie, etc news.

You people have created the never-ending circle of hatred. Meanwhile, some of us just want to read and gossip and catch up on our favorite celebs. How about this? Stop wasting your (and my) energy.

  53. Anastasia says:

Sandra, people just posting that they don’t like a person happens ALL the time on almost every single thread about every celebrity. It’s no biggie.

But as I’ve said in the past, the A&B hatred is SO over the top, so creepy and strange, that it makes people wonder about those who have such intense feelings about people they claim not to care about.

There’s a big difference between “I can’t STAND Paris Hilton” and hundreds of weirdo conspiracy theories with no basis in any fact and statements wishing pain and misery on people you’ve never met and will never meet. The latter? Is just creepy. Those of us who aren’t quite so obsessed with A&B would like the rest of you to resolve your issues somehow so that you can be normal about them. There ARE people who are normal about them and still don’t like them. It is possible!

  54. Savanah Anderson says:

OMG why do people make comments and come back days later to comment on someone elses comments? I think that is a waist of time and stupid. 😕

  55. lilyaly says:

woh,bu i don`t get it what ae the names of her kids? knox and vivienne?

  56. Lizzie says:

There are movie stars and singers that I really don’t care for but I do not look up their website and much less waist time being ugly with comments. These are 2 people who deserve being over the top. They’re beautiful and have done what no other rich and famous have done and that would be love children regardless of whether their biological or not. May God Bless them always.
