Matthew McConaughey describes “bloody, primeval” birth scene

Matthew McConaughey, his girlfriend Camila Alves, and their two week old baby, Levi are featured on the upcoming issue of OK!. The interview with McConaughey inside the magazine is colorful and detailed. Unlike other celebrities who give vague positive statements about their childbirth and say everything is wonderful with the new baby, McConaughey paints a gory picture of the birth room and revels in the sensory details. He describes a sweaty scene in which he was coaching Camila through the contractions and playing Brazilian music. He says that Camila was hoping for a natural childbirth without an epidural but that doctors told her she needed a c-section after what sounds like minor complications. He also reveals that he was so happy to learn they had a boy since they thought it was a boy all along and didn’t know the sex ahead of time.

“We found a great rhythm,” Matthew tells OK! about the delivery of baby Levi. “Contractions started kicking in. I sat there with her, right between her legs. We got tribal on it, we danced to it! I was DJ-ing this Brazilian music.”

Levi was born at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and weighed a healthy 7 lbs., 4 oz., and Matthew tells OK! he kept a detailed diary of his and Camila’s hospital experience.

“I have it all chronicled,” he explained. “Becoming a dad is something I’ve dreamed of doing since I was 10. Becoming a father felt very, very natural. We were jamming! She was sweating. No painkiller, let’s go. She just clicked into that gear that only a woman has at a time like this. We’d been up for 40-something hours, and we went from dead tired to a really steadfast, ‘Let’s handle this… let’s stay in the rhythm. Don’t let the contraction be more than you.'”

Camila, 25, wanted a natural birth and chose not to have an epidural. But in the end, Matthew told OK! it came down to what was safest for both mom and baby.

“We ended up having an epidural because, on the large contractions, the umbilical cord was being compressed. They went in and tried the vacuum. This is where I learned — and no one tells you this — but having a baby is a bloody, pukey, sweaty, primeval thing! And I mean that as a beautiful thing. It is wild. But the vacuum didn’t work, and the doctor said, ‘C-section.’

The Texas-born actor says he cut the umbilical cord in “one snip” and got to hold his son for the first 15 minutes while doctors worked on Camila. Both he and the Brazilian beauty — who waited to know the sex of their baby — say they were not surprised to find out they had a boy.

“I said, ‘Come here, little man. I saw the pecker and screamed that we’d been right all along about him being a boy. Then I brought him over to her [Camila],’ Matthew said.

“It was neat to find out what the sex was because we didn’t have the doctor tell us beforehand,” Camila agrees.

So who does little Levi look more like? “Everybody thinks he looks like me because of the hair and skin tone,” Camila says. “I think he looks more like Matthew every day.”

Matthew adds, “I’ve pulled out some baby pictures of myself, and the resemblance is amazing. This kid has a lot to learn from us. I want him to come out being a little wiser, a little cooler and a little happier than we are.”

[From OK! Magazine]

McConaughey is going to be a great dad. He’s so enthusiastic and into the whole experience and it’s refreshing to read such a visceral account of a birth instead of the bland happy descriptions we usually see. I’m looking forward to reading the whole interview and seeing more photos of newborn Levi. That little guy sure is cute. Doesn’t he look like he’s doing the karate baby pose here?

OMG… that lil guy is too precious! My ovaries are aching just looking at him!!!

I’ve got extreme baby fever. I’m 35, I only get to see my husband 3 times a year right now, and I’m leaving on Friday for a 3 week visit… with PERFECT timing for the second week I’m there! I know this isn’t a TTC site, but there sure are alot of you expecting so if you’re so inclined, shoot some magical fertility dust my way, please!!!

Have never done so much praying and positive thinking ala The Secret before in my life!!!!

GOD, that baby is adorable!!!! 😀

  2. Syko says:

    Levi is just darling!

Diva, sending good vibes your way for this visit, it’s time we got a mini-diva going on. Good luck!

  3. Bodhi says:

Aw! They are such a cute family! He is going to be a GREAT dad!

  4. daisy424 says:

Diva, your temp. rises when you’re ovulating. If you have been charting your cycle, you should hit it right on.
After my tubal reversal, I had to chart in order to get pregnant again. I already had 3 daughters and wanted a boy, my fertility specialist gave me tips on increasing those chances. Let me know if you want those tips!
Good luck, and have a great time with your husband. 🙂

    Baby levi is precious!!

Altho I know MM is WAY earthy – let’s face it, this guy eats dirt – something about his recount is so “actor-ish.” I can just SEE him in a movie, leaning over a woman, gripping her hand saying, “Don’t let the contraction be more than YOU.” Good writing.

  6. Diva says:

You guys are awesome! Thank you!

We don’t care, girl or boy, we would be over the moon either way!

Daisy, I have one of those sweet lil fertility monitors that tells me as my hormone levels rise. It worked beautifully a couple years ago, so I’m keeping the faith in it this time, too! (We lost our lil Bloobree (Blueberry said with my husband’s English accent 😀 ) but we’re now ready to give this another try!)

And yes, before I get slapped around for hi-jacking this thread, lol, I will shut up, lol.

    Thank you all so much!

  7. Celebitchy says:

I don’t mean to sound gross here either, but there is a way to tell when you are ovulating because you have um stringy discharge. Here is a good description of it further in this article. For me this is 14 days after the first day of my period, but you guys probably know all this:

  8. Anni says:

aww, that little guy is so cute!

*sends fertility dust to diva* *fans* did it work? let us know!

  9. geronimo says:

Hmmm. Don’t like him but melting a small bit at his description of the birth – makes a nice change from the ‘angels sang’ bullcrap OK! usually serves up. But Camila’s lovely and that little Levi’s a cutie.

    Fingers crossed, diva!

  10. Kaiser says:

*barf* That was a little gross, CB.

Yeah, no babies for me for a little while longer. But Levi *is* a cutie.

  11. Syko says:

Well, giving birth ain’t all sunshine and fairy dust…it really is a primal, bloody mess. But it is so fantastic and wonderful, it’s worth everything.

  12. ri23 says:

All babies look like my grandfather, so blahblah, cute, blahblah, whatever. But M.M. seems like a pretty mellow fellow to hang with. I dig him.

  13. cc says:

I seriously laughed at his description. It is a dirty, but mind blowing experience. Cute kid. Good luck Diva and *lol* to all the mommies giving advice. I wish I had more to add, but my husband and I can’t use the same soap for fear of another pregnancy. Man, this summer is all about baby fever.

  14. Jill says:

It’s nice to see a picture of a new mom, dad and baby where the parents don’t look like they are going on the Red Carpet. She looks very natural and they look in love with their baby.

  15. Katie says:

daisy424….I’m interested in knowing what THOSE tips were the doc gave you about increasing your chances for a boy!

  16. Nouvel says:

WHat a cutie, mixed race babies are the most gorgeous ever, what is up with that?? Anytime you see two people of different races, the baby is absolutely gorgeous.. especially a black and white baby, like Halle Barry..

  17. cara says:

All I know is THAT woman is THE most beautful woman in Hollywood.

  18. daisy424 says:

Hey Katie, Having an orgasm is important(hormonal), sexual position, er um, doggie, if you get what I mean. Male sperm swim faster (will reach the egg before female sperm),but don’t live as long as female sperm. Timing is important. So, if you want a boy have sex on the day you ovulate, for a girl, up to 72 hours before you ovulate. Male sperm will die before the egg is released, so the female sperm will rule!
My Doctor told me these things will increase your chances, but won’t guarantee the sex of the baby, don’t douche with vinegar, unless you want a girl.
My fertility specialist told me these tips in 1987, it is a bit hard to remember everything he told me, but I did have two boys. Good luck 😉

  19. Lauri says:

Maybe I’m just a little old fashioned, but I do think there is a lot to be said for keeping private matters…well, private. I am glad that they have a healthy and beautiful baby, but that detailed description seems far too over the top for my taste.

Maybe it’s because he’s a celebrity, that he wants to make his entire life an open book. I think that’s a shame. I like knowing that there are intimate things that my husband and I share only with each other.

  20. Diva says:

I don’t think it’s so much that he’s a celebrity as just a real OPEN person in general. He doesn’t censor himself about anything, so it’s no surprise he didn’t here, either.

I, personally, think it’s pretty cool. Not just because he didn’t make it all “bathed in a white light” and other silly crap, but because he was THRILLED with the REALITY of it! When you read it in the context that I’m sure he said it, he was STOKED that it was all so real and not this little fairy tale thing… and that, from a father, is a pretty frickin awesome thing, if you ask me!

Daisy… I have a kinda, um… intimate question to ask you, lol… I have no problem asking it here, but some others might have an issue reading it here, lol, and I don’t know how you would feel about answering it here… so, I guess, well, if you’re comfortable answering anything I might ask here, I’ll ask it… just let me know. 😆

  21. Steph says:

I just had a vision of Mathew banging on his bongo drums in rhythm to her contractions…LOL. Cute baby!

  22. Kolby says:

Best of luck to you Diva! I’m sending you loads of sticky baby dust!

I was a charter, and we tried for a few months before we even knew what we were doing, but my cycle was kind of wacky and I ovulated on the 17th day of my cycle the month I got pregnant. CB’s right – there are lots of different signs you’re body will give you that you’re getting ready to ovulate.

  23. daisy424 says:

Diva, I don’t know if CB can give you my email address or not,(behind the scene) but they have my permission to. If not, hit me with your question. 😀

  24. Diva says:

Welllllllll… ok… disclaimer here… if you have an ISSUE with “too much information” stop reading this comment now, lol…..

Daisy, on that orgasm thing, do you remember if it’s important for a woman to have the orgasm before or after ejaculation? Does it matter, or does it have to happen one or the other?

    Thanks, lol

    *edit*
Sorry, cb, was a little impatient there, lol.

  25. Celebitchy says:

I will hook you guys up Daisy and Diva. One minute and I’ll send you each other’s e-mail addresses.

  26. Syko says:

I’d think before, as the muscular contractions from the orgasm would help move the swimmers up to where their girlfriends are waiting, but I’m no doctor.

I don’t see McConnaughey as being over the top with information. I see this as a man who is so excited and thrilled with his whole experience that he’s wanting to share it with the world. Which is pretty neat. Nothing sexier than a good father. Now if we could just talk him into deodorant – – –

  27. Wif says:

Urg, I think I got moderated before. My good wishes to Diva got lost.

Best wishes Diva. Have a wonderful time conceiving.

  28. daisy424 says:

Worked out great CB, thanks for the hook-up.

  29. Kolby says:

I know the answer to the orgasm question, too, in case daisy didn’t, lol. When we were trying I was a research freak. There wasn’t a trick or myth out there I didn’t examine the hell out of!

  30. daisy424 says:

Right on the (g)spot Syko, excuse the pun 8)

  31. Diva says:

Yeah, being a research freak is how I got confused on the topic in the first place… one place says before, for optimal, uh, swimming, lol, and one place says after for the “dip” effect.

I guess I’ll just go for both! 😀

And thank all of you SO much for the well wishes and baby dust (especially the sticky kind, Kolby! lol. You can never have too much positive energy going for you in this!

  32. Syko says:

Diva, be sure and tell us in a month to six weeks if all the positive energy and hopes and magical baby dust helped! Keeping my fingers crossed for you. Do not cross any of YOUR appendages! 😀

I’m sure that, whatever the outcome, this is going to be a project that you’ll enjoy working on. Try not to think about it, though, just relax and enjoy!

  33. Larissa says:

    love ´em!!!

  34. Nan says:

The face of the baby is precious. What a lil darling.

  35. fee says:

Hahahaha I love that he has told it like it is – not the whole “it was like meditation and zen….”. When I pregnant I was prepared for what ever happened…..and I knew it wouldnt tickle! But girls I know where actually shocked at the pain of childbirth……WTF! I couldnt believe these gals thought you get it over with in 2 hours with as much pain as a period and stroll out in your best jeans….hilarious

  36. Ashley says:

I’m glad that Matt and Camilla shared a bit of their birthing expierience. It sounds like Matthew was hands on and involved with her and the pregnancy. The baby is a cutie. Congrats to them!

  37. poopie says:

his BEARD gave him a kid !! whooop whooop ! now, he is legitimately STRAIGHT!

  38. kat says:

having to try to yank the baby out with a vacuum sounds like a little more than “minor complications” to me…

  39. brazilian says:

Brazilian woman are the most beautiful in the world ….couldnt be different from babies….

  40. Jose says:

“WHat a cutie, mixed race babies are the most gorgeous ever, what is up with that?? Anytime you see two people of different races, the baby is absolutely gorgeous.. especially a black and white baby, like Halle Barry..”

The kid is cute, but thats your opinion on mixed race kids. Personally, I think white babies are the cutest.

  41. Brasilia says:

Baby looks very white…i fail to see any latino in him 😕
