Jeff Bridges on whether he was high when he accepted his Oscar

I love interviewer Josh Horowitz at MTV. He’s asks celebrities hilariously personal and gossip-worthy questions, like having Angelina Jolie explain her tattoos and asking Kate Hudson whether there really was a painting of a centaur over A-Rod’s bed. One of Horowitz’s latest interviews, with Jeff Bridges, had him asking Bridges whether he was high as a kite when he accepted his Oscar this year. (Best actor for Crazy Heart.) Watch as Bridges denies that he was toasted and is so good natured and funny about it. (Video above)

If you want to see Jeff Bridges’ speech again, it’s on this “official” video from the Academy, (which has of course disabled embedding) and Jeff comes in at 8:15. I forgot what an awesome speech it was. Jeff told a great story about how his parents got him started in the business, and then thanked his director and fellow castmembers. He was very coherent and calm and didn’t seem high to me. I think that’s just his personality, like he seems like a stoner because he’s so mellow and happy. (Here’s a link to a quote where he admits smoking pot, but he’s vague about it.) He did say “man” at the Oscars a lot though. It was a delight to watch his Oscar speech again. Remember how he thanked his wife of 33 years at the end? He said “I’d especially like to thank my gorgeous wife, Sue. We’ve been married 33 years, we have a beautiful family, three girls… thank you guys I wouldn’t be up here without you.” What a great guy and talented actor Jeff Bridges is. I’m going to have to see True Grit soon. Tron can wait a few months, though.

Wow, that’s a couple that really looks like a good fit. I’m coming up on 28 years with my husband(24 officially married) and it’s nice see people we both admire staying together.

  10. Stronzilla says:

Well, if he wasn’t I hope he lit up a fat one after, he deserved it.

If you want to see him in a totally different film watch ‘A Dog Year’.

  11. viper says:

    His laugh was adorable!

  12. viper says:

Also DONT NOT WAIT FOR TRON!!!! Youre going to miss out. I swear you have to see it.

  13. mln76 says:

Um as much as I love the Dude I have to say I completely disagree with viper. Tron isn’t worth the price for a 3D ticket. Basically it’s Flash Gordon meets the Big Lebowski. I can’t wait to see True Grit .

  14. Stubbylove says:

Whitenoise said it best: Pure effortless 100% class. LOVE LOVE Jeff Bridges – so deserving of his Oscar. He’ll always be “The Dude” to me. :>

  15. the_porscha says:

I have to disagree with mln76; Tron:Legacy is like drowning, once you give in, it’s really awesome. I went totally expecting it to suck, but as a cheesy action/3d movie, it’s fantastic. Jeff Bridges is great, and the action scenes are wonderful. Just curious, mln, did you see it in regular 3d or the disney ultra 3d? because the latter was amazing, and i heard the former was just meh.

  16. Johnthing says:

    Love the Dude.

  17. Az says:

I have had a crush on him for the longest time. Such a great guy.

  18. Amanda says:

True Grit was great. Jeff Bridges’s acting was FABULOUS. He got his character so perfectly- I enjoyed just watching his performance.

  19. Bill Hicks is God says:

Who cares if he was, that’s what Visine is for. Better than being up there drunk off your ass.

  20. TQB says:

Am I a bad person for reading this post and hoping that the answer was a resounding “YES!”

Whatever, as stated, the Dude abides. True Grit was excellent. I think you have to be into Tron-like movies to like Tron; my geeky husband loved it. I took a pass.

  21. normades says:

Wonderful to see him with a lovely age appropriate lady. Just goes to show you actors can have long relationships – to non actors!

  22. Tiffany says:

I hope he was! Love him as the “Dude” for always. What a great couple he and his wife make. I’m working on 22 years, it’s the best thing I ever did.
He seems like a great guy and what a great actor.

  23. hellen says:

One of the VERY FEW people in Hollywood whom it’s impossible to snark about. Everyone loves the Dude.

  24. Courtney says:

who cares if he was high when he won his oscar he was entitled to that he’d been nominated and lost previously. He and his wife are reminicent of Bruce Paltrow & Blythe Danner or Paul Newman &Joanne Woodward long married devoted couples who are well respected in and out of the industry

  25. Johanna says:

True Grit was entertaining as heck which had me pleasantly surprised since I hadn’t seen the previews. I loved it!

  26. Kim says:

High or not – love him!! So glad he is getting his due/Oscars etc. after years of great acting! His wife & daughter are gorgeous!

  27. environ says:

We saw True Grit this weekend, it was awesome! Hailee Steinfeld knocked it out of the park! Damon and Bridges were also amazing. It was a really good movie.

  28. original kate says:

love the dude. and the dudette is one lucky lady.

  29. Anti-icon says:

I am madly in love with Jeff Bridges, largely because he ALWAYS flatters his wife in media interviews. That’s my kind of public performer. Plus, his work is genius. Re-watch fabulous Baker Boys and tell me he and Michelle Pfeiffer aren’t the BEST on screen lovers.

Yeah for Jeff Bridges winning the Oscar…and life, apparently.

  30. Camille says:

    Love him.

  31. Someone Else says:

Just waitin’ for him to ask, “Mind if I do a J?”

He and Goodman deserved Oscars for Lebowski. It just doesn’t stop being funny.

    I say Sequel!

  32. Whatever says:

Nice that he thanks his wife and family. So what if he smokes pot? Is that even a big deal? Lots of people smoke; it really isn’t that unusual. I’d toke one with him, he seems like a cool, mellow guy.

  33. dj says:

Integrity! What a rare commodity in addition to being funny, talented and truly a family man with his priorities in line. So, so, so in love with Jeff Bridges!

  34. Jeri says:

Also love Jeff Bridges. Such a cool guy and True Grit will be the 1st movie I see in a theater for many many years. It will be worth it (I’m Sure).

  35. LittleDeadGirl says:

Ha! Makes me love him even more … he was so gracious when most actors would have been assholes about such a question (I’m look at you Christian Bale) but he took it in stride and laughed.

I do wanna see Tron but I love so bad movies they are good and I have a feeling this one is like that … or ma hoping … True Grit was amazing tho in a so good it’s awesome kinda way

  36. peachthief says:

Talk about your Forever Dongs, sigh. I’ve wanted to bone that dude since I saw him in Starman when I was ten years old.

  37. IsabelSinn says:

I absolutely adore Jeff Bridges. We just had a Jeff Bridges-Fest the other day. We saw True Grit and Tron back to back. He was utterly fantastic in True Grit, and Tron was pretty good, but I couldn’t help thinking that he was totally “The Dude” in Tron because that’s how he talked. It was still great. He seems so genuine and I miss that in actors these days.

  38. Kiska says:

    Jeff Bridges is da man!
