Avril Lavigne: I had my dancers dye their hair brown so I’m the only blonde

Avril Lavigne has given plenty of self-important, immature interviews in which she’s told stories about kneeing guys in the balls, said that she’s the best thing that’s every happened to her husband, and said that people who hate her are “losers”. She also used the fact that she sent some used clothing to Hurricane Katrina victims as evidence of her generosity, and said she gives her workers “stuff” because they “don’t make much money.” Considering that Avril’s the one who pays them, you think she would realize that she could raise their salaries and change that.

In a new interview with OK! Magazine, the 23 year-old singer doesn’t come across as obnoxious as she has in the past. Avril talks about her new clothing line of barbie-type punk clothing for tweens called Abbey Dawn which is currently available at Kohl’s stores in the US. She also confirms the rumor that she had all her backup dancers dye their hair brown so she would be the only blonde person on stage. As for whether she’s ready to have children with her husband of two years, Deryck Whibley, Avril says she not ready for the responsibility and will wait until she’s in her 30s:

Are you planning on having children someday?
Oh God! I don’t want to have kids for like 10 years. I still have a lot to do. I don’t even know if I could handle a dog right now. I’m so not ready. Someday I’ll be a mom but not until I’m in my 30s.

It was your second wedding anniversary on July 15. How did you and Deryck celebrate?
We went away for the night and went to our favorite restaurant and just had a very romantic day and evening. If I wasn’t on tour right now, I would like to have gone on vacation to Hawaii or something but I’m only home for the week.

How are you able to keep the relationship strong when you are touring for so long?
We e-mail and talk on the phone. I’m always on my Blackberry. He comes out and visits. I was just in Europe and he came out for two weeks at the beginning of the tour and two weeks at the end of the tour.

It’s really great having Deryck around because he’s really talented and he can help out and give me notes on the show. After I took my voice lessons he was like ‘whoa, you’re voice is the best I’ve ever heard it.’ He has a really good ear.

So when Deryck isn’t around, do you hang out mostly with your dancers on tour?
I’m really close with a few of the band guys and a few of the dancers. We get together and we hang out and we have dance parties. I always end up being friends with random dancers because they’re with you for so long and there’s no one else around.

One dancer commented that you made everyone dye their hair brown so you could be the only blonde on stage. Is that true?

Everyone was brown except one of my favorite girls was blonde so we were like ‘you have to have brown hair.’ It wouldn’t look right.

I wanted my girls to look really punk rock with like black hair and that’s pretty standard for everyone, like Madonna and Mariah Carey. If they’re blonde you’re not going to see another blonde on stage.

[From OK! Magazine]

Avril also said that she’s not so concerned about what people say about her because they’re just trying to make her look bad and it’s “all false”

How does it make you feel when you hear rumors about you going around the Internet?
You get built up and put on a pedestal and then people want to bring you down. It can be hurtful. Some people try to make me look bad or not a nice person but it’s completely false.

Does it really bother you?
Yeah of course, as a human it can be hurtful, but at the same time I don’t let it affect me because there are more positives going on than negatives. I’m just some chick from Napanee, Ontario and I can’t believe where I am today.

Is the criticism harder to take as a musician, who has to pour her heart into her music?
When you’re a rock star or a person who puts your music out there, it’s more personal. But I absolutely have nothing to complain about.

Avril spit on the paparazzi in three separate incidents in 2006 and then blamed them for it. She did it outside of busy Hollywood clubs like Hyde and it’s not like they were stalking her at the time. She’s calmed down a lot since then, but it’s pretty amusing that she’s saying it’s all other people’s fault that she has a bad reputation because we somehow want to bring her down.

Avril also defended the stories that she went out partying at a time when she had canceled concerts due to losing her voice. She said “I didn’t go partying the entire time. When I got home, I sat at home.” It sure sounds like she went out some of the time. By her logic, it’s ok though because she did stay at her house at some point. Avril is definitely saying less things that are really rude and I guess that’s an improvement over her past behavior.

As for having one her of backup dancers dye their hair brown, that sounds pretty minor and not like a big plot to be the only blonde. Gwen Stefani hired some Japanese American women to follow her around dressed like school girls and they were contractually obligated not to talk. Not that there was anything defensible about that.

  1. crazy canuck girl says:

Marilyn Monroe also wouldn’t be in movies with anyone blonder than her – not that Avril is anywhere near Marilyn status!

  2. Frenchie says:

She tries everything to be a rock star but she has no talent nor charisma. She tries on a bad girl style and behaviour but still dyes her hair blonde, like everyone else !

  3. elisha says:

@ the Crazy Canadian ;)… I don’t know how you could get any blonder than Marilyn Monroe. Clear hair, like a polar bear?

Also, I spent enough time at 924 Gilman when I was younger to know that punks do not have backup dancers. Unless you’re like, Gogol Bordello or something.

And Avril, deary, no one’s putting you on a pedestal. Except maybe that hobbit hubby of yours.

  4. Edith says:

Oh dear. She’s one of those figures who comes across as much less likeable after an interview.

  5. omg says:

Years ago, when i saw her the first time on TV, i was instantly in love. She’s just unbelieveable sexy. After reading some interviews with her, she got uglier in my mind.

  6. LiLi says:

    she’s such a poser
    and looks terrible blonde

  7. KateNonymous says:

    I don’t know. That’s still pretty obnoxious.

  8. Bodhi says:

Eh, she has grown up a little, but I still don’t like her.

  9. Mairead says:

God love her – I hope that they’re editing her comments to make her look even dimmer (not likely, but I’m trying to be charitable) – otherwise love, learn to open mouth and THEN engage brain.

  10. Because I say So says:

She’s still touring? I thought her album tanked and her concert tickets were practically going for free. And she’s only 23…

  11. Kelly says:

I actually liked it that she is responsible enough to know her limits and thus will not have children until she can have more time and be more mature to be a parent.

I have no problem with her not liking a paparazi.
At least she hasn’t sent her guards to beat them up like the Brangelina did to protect their 11 million dollar profit of their babies.

  12. Other Karen says:

Isn’t the “making everyone wear or do something so you’re the star” thing kind of standard? Sort of like the ugly bridesmaid dresses? Or the star getting a conspicuously different outfit than everyone else?
She should have given them more leeway in shades of brown though–that shade doesn’t suit all of them.

  13. Frenchie says:

Now that I think about it, she should have her back-up dancers shorten of a few inches and put on some pounds, so she could look REALLY good.

  14. SimpleSimon says:

She is “punk”? Really? I know couple of 15 year old’s that are more punk then her old arse. She should do porn already!

  15. Temujin says:

Well this Canadian thinks she is fantastic. You should all lighten up on her 🙂

  16. Get a life people says:

I am from the USA and you know, I’m really sick of all these people bitching about Avril Lavigne and hating on her. It’s one thing to not like her lyrics or dancing, but saying she has no talent for singing is just stupid. I mean is it just me, or does she have millions of fans and millions of dollars to go along with them proving how good of a singer she is. And all of you people saying you don’t like her because of how she treats paparazzi and what she says in interviews are stupid too. No one commenting on these blogs truly knows anything about Avril’s personality. She may come off with an “ugly” personality from her interviews and such, but has anyone ever considered the fact that she’s just being honest? Seriously, no one wants a bunch of news-reporting stalkers just waiting for you to leave your house so they can get their picture. Just because Avril isn’t some politically correct moron who tolerates the paparazzi doesn’t mean she’s a bad person. I completely agree with Temujin, even though he/she didn’t write much.

  17. Nan says:

Avril is allergic to alchohol & we all get to see it. She’s just one of those people who really shouldn’t drink. She was so cute when much younger. She becomes a different person when she drinks. Surely, we all have known one kind soul who has had this problem, no?

  18. Bodhi says:

Avril is just as manufactured as Britney once was. She was originaly supposed to be a pop-country act, but after the Brit’s sucess, her management decided to cast her as the “Anti-Britney”. She didn’t even know who the Sex Pistols are until a guy from her band gave her one of thier CDs for Christmas. Avril is the Queen of Posers

  19. geekazoid says:

Wait.. Avril Lavgine’s a rock star? This is teh first time I’m hearing THAT.

  20. Christina X says:

I’m guessing this is yet another attempt for her to “stand out”.

Anyone for that matter who calls themselves the anti-Britney are so full of shit.

Face it, Avril, no matter how hard you try, you never were and never will be different from any other half-naked pop star who wishes to separate herself from that image.

I’ve been saying that since *I* was a 14 year old kid that the minute you’d gain enough attention that the clothes would come off and the hair would be bleach blonde quicker than you could say the word “hypocrite”.

You always were and always will be just another Britney/Christina posing with a guitar.

  21. russianeko says:

avril lavigne has never even been one of those artists that are put on a pedastel. she’s never done anything for society other than be a selfish brat obsessed with her “punk” image.

  22. Allison says:

I think Avril Lavigne is GORGEOUS, and well I love her old music.. the CD ‘Under My Skin’ Or whatever.
Honestly I don’t like much of her new music unless I’m wanting to just dance and be crazy.
Her old music is a lot better though.

I really like Avril, and I think she’s an awesome singer.

All you people that say she’s another brittney/christina I don’t think that.

I think she’s SO much different then all them sluts.

That’s just my opinion though. =)

  23. Diva says:

I love “When You’re Gone”… makes me cry everytime. Of course, it fits my situation and I can so personally relate to it… and hmm, I didn’t even write it. 😛

  24. SixxKitty says:

    Who is Avril Lavigne?
Looks like a clone to me…

  25. Christina X says:

Avril Lavigne’s only remotely famous because she’s cute, just like the other two had become famous.

And really, I’ve seen her photographed on covers of SEVERAL of men’s magazines, and while they’re not Hustler photoshoots, they’re certainly not that modest either, especially for Mrs. Avril “Every Single Attractive and Popular Woman is a Slut” Lavigne.

  26. cas says:

“I always end up being friends with random dancers because they’re with you for so long and there’s no one else around.”

    – Very nice Avril!

  27. Dee says:

The moment she likened herself to Kurt Cobain — I despised that wretched peroxide toerag!

Oh and, whoever had the comment ‘I’d still do her’, that’s real degrading. I hope your kids or future kids find a better role model.

  28. Mari says:

I really liked her music before this last album. There’s some good songs, but some of them are just obnoxious. Teaming up to duet with a female rapper? Stupid! There’s nothing wrong with her wearing pink and being girly, but I think having BACK-UP dancers is very pop and goes way too far. I also think her videos have gone more in the Christina Aguilera direction and I would not consider her pop-rock so much as pop now. Her videos, (like Christina’s) LOOK great, but they’re missing that point, plot, and depth.
I do love her voice though and she is undeniably gorgeous. The other thing i really like about her is that she’s not afraid to talk sh*t about people she doesn’t like or respect (ashley simpson, hilary duff)and she doesn’t whine about being famous and having papparazzi follow her everywhere, she hates people like that.
the clothing line for young girls though? baaaad idea; who is she, f-ing hannah montana?? 😕

  29. Gekko says:

Love her music but after reading this I’m not so sure I like her that much now.

  30. roadrunner says:

I’ll give her 2 points for spitting on the paparazzi..

  31. butterfinger says:

She’s a manufactured phony. Plain and simple.

“random dancers”… hmmm. They don’t really sound like friends, if she calls them random. DIVA!!!

Lucky for her her husband is a loser poppunk poser just like she is. No punk with any self respect would hang out anywhere near her bleached-blonde, backup dancer-having pop ass!

  32. Christina X says:

I don’t like pop music, but at the same time I don’t really mind that backup dancers and costumes are involved. It’s the delusion that these pop stars will deny up and down (I’m looking at you, Christina Aguilera and Pink) what they are just because they paint their nails black or put 9 million holes in their faces. I think I can hand a little more to Britney Spears because she never gave a flying fuck about selling out, or changing her image/identity every five seconds to outdo competition. It’s annoying what Avril, Christina, and Pink do.

And we’ve established for the eight millionth time that Avril’s pretty, but she’s nothing special. I don’t know how hard it is to refrain from (I’m looking at you, men) gushing about her alleged “hotness” when you can step outside and see at least a dozen girls who look exactly like Avril Lavigne. You’re straight, superficial, and boring. We get it.

Blah blah blah Avril’s not afraid to say what’s on her mind. Well, when I was 12, I could attack Britney Spears and Hilary Duff too. It really grates my nerves when people say stuff like “OMG SHE’S SO BRAVE FOR TALKING OUT AGAINST BRITNEY!” because if you consider all of her “opponents”, not one of them have a reputation of kicking your ass. I wish she’d finally insult the wrong person and they’d knock a few teeth out.

There’s a difference between having an opinion and being obnoxious about it, and she crossed that thin red line a long time ago. Maybe she should stop focusing on bashing Britney Spears and Hilary Duff, and start growing the fuck up and focusing on her own shit.

Also, is it possible we can discuss the topic at hand without bringing up Britney Spears or Amy Winehouse? That’s getting old too.

    /End rant.

  33. sallysitwell says:

Booooring. Avril is snoozesville. Even SHE’S bored of her wanna-be punk rock act. This just in: 2001 is over. Avril should be ignored and relegated to the ‘Oh, she’s still alive?’ closet, much like Paris Hilton and everyone from High School Musical.

  34. Alyrose says:

Ok, honestly, I don’t listen to her often, every once in a while I find a song of hers I like. But I’d like to ask a question to all of the people that say she’s not punk.
Can you tell me, what exactly is punk?
I mean, no one ever said “if you’re going to be punk, you have to give up all originality…” She’s punk, but she adds her own style to it. She switches it up. And who really gives a heck if you “know 15 year olds more punk than her”…did she ever say “oh yeah, I’m the most punk person who ever existed”? NO. In my opinion, the hair dye thing is stupid. Who cares. They knew they’d have to do dumb stuff in order to be the backup dancer for a big star. Seriously.
Stop sticking to your dumb high school stereotypes, and get out into the world. Experience a different kind of person than your strict emos who all look exactly the same, your strict preps who all look exactly the same…step out, grow up.

And as for her music, obviously people love it, because she’s a millionaire. I don’t go ragging on all the people you love just because I DON’T.
Oh and by the way, since she’s such a poser and you’re such a (judgmental) expert, lets see you pick up a guitar, write a song like that, get up on stage in front of millions of people and perform it. Without having bananas thrown at your face, I mean. And I reeeeeally think youre going to far when you start ripping on her husband. youve never met them in your life. even if they were posers or losers or whatever, you dont know them in person, so stop acting like youre better than them? if theyre so rude and horrible, stop stooping to their level. and you know the only reason youre able to say what youre saying is because youre hiding behind a computer monitor. so please, show some common decency and at least respect the fact that they may be alot different than what theyre portrayed as.

  35. George says:

If the backups had any complaints about dying their hair brown they could have quit the show. But they went along with it and stayed on. Time to put up and sing.
otoh, Avril could let her natural color grown out and have the backups dye their hair grey – they all look a bit aged and tired.

  36. Barby says:

I miss the Avril I met in 2001. What ever happened to her? x0 She’s in my prayers.

  37. Jaundice Machine says:

Riddle me this? Since when was punk rock choreographed? Back-up dancers are about as poppy as you can get. If you aren’t playing an instrument, stage diving, or smearing feces on yourself, you don’t belong on the fucking stage at a punk show. Fucking poseur.

  38. Christina X says:

Alyrose, for someone defending them so vehemently, you don’t know them either.

I don’t know Avril or her husband personally, but judging by her behavior and attitude, I’m glad I don’t. It’s open-season with celebrities who act out to be judged.

And I am so fucking sick of hearing that if you have negative opinions about someone that you don’t have a life or that you’re jealous.

This isn’t celebrity fucking romper room. You want to sympathize for a bunch of overpaid and self-important assholes? Well, this isn’t itmustbesoterriblebeingacelebrity.com.

  39. Owner724 says:

avril is such a poser i mean punk people dont look lik dat she is lik punk prep ugh 🙁

  40. ace says:

God, it sickens me the way Punk has been co-opted. A punk fashion line for tweens? Oh Lord, please no. What happened to actual rebellion?

  41. Alyrose says:

Christina X, trust me, I understand what you’re saying, and I’m sorry if it came off a little more…defensive as you put it. When I get on a rant, things fly. I don’t personally love her music, and I know I don’t know her, I’m just saying, it really kind of annoys me, no matter who it is that people are talking about, when they start getting overly abusive about it. If you don’t want to like Avril Lavigne, fine, I’m not saying like her. I’m just saying, people don’t have to obsess over hating her, or anyone else. Who knows, maybe she is a poser and a major asshole. I don’t know. But I don’t go on here to talk about how much of a poser she is. If celebrities want to make fools of themselves, whatever. Why don’t we react to the losers at school or at work like we react to them? A prime example of how the media has taken over the world.

    😯

  42. Jason Saint says:

There’s not a single thing that’s punk rock about Avril Lavigne.

  43. Christina X says:

Ouch. I’m sorry Alyrose. I feel really bad now 🙁

I’m a very opinionated person, is all.

  44. Alyrose says:

Don’t feel bad, It’s a hot topic apparently. eek.

    I appreciate opinionated people. Lol.

  45. Autumn says:

okay…first thing’s first i AM an avril fan. 2nd’ly she never, ever said thats she is punkrock. everytime people call her punk she says “i’m not punk” if she knows this and says it why don’t you people get it? she has punk “qualities” like but she has not once said her music is punk.

  46. jacque says:

what i can comment to avril’s act is she looks as if she’s soo good, well i think ur not… you definetly suck! i wonder how ur current husband now, gain to love you with you attitude.. and ur a crazy canadian, your a disgrace to canadian people…

  47. Zayniac says:

    Christina X:
Not that I’m an Avril fan, but to set the record straight; no, Avril is not only popular because she’s ‘cute.’
She was noticed by the CEO of Arista records, Antonia “L.A.” Reid, because of her singing with Steve Medd, and from there moved from the country – that somebody had mentioned – she was first interested in, to wanting to put out a rock record. She ahd four charting singles, a multi-platinum album, – oh and just by the way, I would fuly say her music was skate-punk, and that she was indeed very edgy at the time, – and became the youngest female musician to have a number one album in the U.K.
    That’s why she’s big.
And in modern days, Girlfriend topped the charts, as did her latest album.

  48. Robert says:

You haters make me sick. On the Internet you can find many live-videos by Avril. In the most of them she sings fantastic. Have you ever watch some of these videos or visit her concerts? If not, why do you say she can ´t sing? She sings way better than Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, Shakira, Hayley Wiliams, Hillary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, Demi Lovato, Katy Perry, Madonna or Ashlee Simpson.

    • Anonymous says:

I agree, also, she never said herself she was punk,in fact she denies it. She kind of is anti-britney. She doesn’t rely on the “sexy” image either. No matter what rumors are spread it’s not going to hurt her any. Did you come here just to hate, because if you did I find that sad. Find someone that you can praise and stop wasting everyone elses time here.

  49. Ikram& Issmahen says:

ilove u so much because Avril is the best one of the Rock

  50. we can’t express our feeling, Avril Lavigne is our best singer, and Why;Girlfriend are the best ones, all the tunisians love you

  51. ye$imcr@zy says:

chritinaX haha avrils sooo crazy hot i have never ever seen someone that naturally pretty and i do some modelling in my spare time come no need to be envious!

  52. Itsme says:

The only reason that Paris Hilton is gone is because she had to resort to a reality show about her new best friend. High School Musical is dead because it’s just like every other kids TV show on Disney and Nick. (I wish they still made movies like Beauty and the Beast) Anyway, Avril Lavigne is a hard worker. This article might tell you some things but it doesn’t tell all. SHE IS NOT PUNK! She says she is not punk, people say that to get a reaction from other people. Even if there was someone in show business that is perfect with no bad reputation you people would still be trying to spread lies anyway. Figure out what’s actually true and what is a lie. When you hang out with her for months and years then decide if she’s so bad.
