Geri Halliwell claims she only does non-strenuous yoga & that she eats junk food

Spice Girl Geri Halliwell has a new interview and photo spread in Hello Magazine in which she’s featured lounging around on the beach in a white string bikini and playing with her daughter, Bluebell Madonna, two. Her body is enviable and toned to perfection yet the pop singer claims the only exercise she does is walking and mild non-strenuous yoga. She also says she eats junk when she wants and just makes up for it the next day with a better diet. Is this plausible at all?

What is your diet and exercise regime?
“I walk and I do yoga, but not the strenuous, hardcore Ashtanga style. Often, I just breathe and sit in one position for ages. It’s for relaxation. The most vigorous exercise I do is running around after Bluebell!

“I don’t have a strict diet anymore. I eat cake, crisps, sugar-free chocolate and chips if I want to. I can’t be bothered to follow a gruelling food plan. I’m a petite person and if I eat relatively healthily I’ll stay that way. It’s simple really. When I feel under pressure, I do eat cake but I don’t punish myself for that like I used to. I just eat more healthily the next day.”

[From Hello! Magazine, print edition, August 19, 2008]

I think she’s fibbing – or at least stretching the truth until it almost snaps, but that’s because I’m a person that always has to exercise hard to maintain any kind of fit physique. Heidi Klum says this same crap too about how she doesn’t work out and just runs after her kids. But maybe it’s true and the genetic gods just blessed them. They also probably eat really well and don’t have a lot of carbs.

It seems like Gerri used to work out really hard – she recently got off the Spice Girls tour – and maybe she just keeps this great body with maintenance. There were pictures of her out running with her trainer a while ago and she probably worked out with weights back then. It just makes me roll my eyes when women with such enviable bodies act like it’s so easy and gloss over the hard parts. At least Jennifer Garner and Gwen Stefani admit they busted their butts to get their pre-baby shapes back.

Halliwell also talks in the article about her past issues with bulimia and says she has trouble with always striving for perfection. She calls herself “a bit curvier… at the moment.. having done the tour.” If she’s “curvier” now I’d like to know where it went. She says she’s never had plastic surgery and that she’s trying to resist the urge but that “I’d never say never.” If she does get plastic surgery, I don’t expect her to tell. This is a woman who claims to just walk, do light yoga, and eat junk food.

Maybe I’m wrong though. They totally photoshopped her pupils out in these pictures so they probably made her fitter too, not that there was much work to do there.

Update: Halliwell was photographed on August 6 looking less super-fit, but still great, so maybe it’s true that she doesn’t exercise as much now and indulges when she wants. Compared to that recent photo, these pictures are either slightly old or airbrushed.

[Thanks to Anthony for the tip!]

what makes her think we care

  2. Orangejulius says:

Complete BS. Implausible. I know EXACTLY how much work it takes to have a body like that. I do it every frigging day. That and very good eating habits. At her age, she may get away with light yoga and watching what she eats, but even with the right genes, believe me, it won’t stay that way.

  3. Powerade says:

i don’t believe her simply because she wasn’t that thin when she was in spice girls.

  4. Granger says:

Well, notice she said, “I eat cake, crisps, sugar-free chocolate and chips if I want to.” IF. That’s a big word. What she means is that she eats those things once in a blue moon. The rest of the time, I’m guessing she eats what you’d expect — salads, grilled fish or chicken, lots of veggies — and consumes no more than 1400-1500 calories a day.

As for the exercise, she is full of shit. You can’t have a body like that without regular cardio, at the very least. And we all know yoga is NOT cardio. Anyway, even if yoga is all she does right now, she was doing something a lot more strenuous just a few weeks ago!

  5. WTF?!?! says:

It IS possible to stay trim following that regime, but abs and legs like that come from more than sitting “in one position ages” and chasing a kid.

    I call shenanigans!

And Granger– there are forms of yoga that are cardio to the max, but not the type she’s describing.

  6. Anthony says:

    LOL, she’s such a fake!

First of all, she doesn’t have such perfect genes because if she did, then she would be naturally thin/toned.

Secondly, everyone in Hello gets photoshopped!

Thirdly, am I allowed to post a link here? Well, nevermind, i ‘ll just tell you: if you go to the Sun newspaper(UK) or to Pacific News and search for the latest about Geri, well, you ‘ll probably get this news about this article now but BEFORE that, last week, she was photographed on August 6th(her birthday apparently) and she looked VERY different, let me tell you. She actually looked a tad upset that she was found out looking less than tiny… And it makes me wonder now… when did this photoshoot actually take place..?! Seriously, now, could it all have been staged by her and her PR team as damage control? LOL, I wouldn’t put it past her.

  7. Anthony says:

Actually, this whole thing with Geri is totally screwed up. She glorifies eating disorders and as someone who’s been there, done that and got a bunch of T-shirts, there’s nothing glorious about it! There are many girls who unfortunately look up to her(this is what the world has come to) and she’s doing a great disservice to them all. She is actually helping vulnerable women who already have issues with their bodies to relapse. And the press is her willing accomplice.

I too am thin right now and have been many times throughout my life but I do control my eating to stay this way. I don’t like doing it but I have food intolerances and there’s no other way. I know Geri has the same kind of intolerances, she’s mentioned them in the past, I don’t know why she has to pretend now… Oh, of course I could exercise like mad but bleh, how totally boring! Mind you, I used to in my teens and early twenties, thank God I snapped out of that.

By the way, just in case anyone’s wondering, I ‘m a girl, Anthony is just my nick.

  8. geronimo says:

Geri has no credibility when it comes to keeping fit/in shape as she’s been on every diet/eating fad known to man at some point. Very self-absorbed, comes across as someone absolutely fixated with her weight. Wouldn’t be taking any H&F advice from Geri. 🙄

But disagree that walking and yoga can’t give really toned results. I do both (fast walking) and it does keep you very lean.

  9. lola lola says:

I’m starting to think the term “watching what I eat” means different things to different people. I mean, If I’m “watching what I eat” that means I’m trying not to eat cake, cookies & candy EVERYDAY…obviously for someone like Geri, it means hardly eating anything at all. She’s sort of ‘watching what others eat’ while she puts nothing in her mouth at all. Sounds like no fun to me. How sad.

  10. Anthony says:

    @ Geronimo

When you say she’s no credibility when it comes to keeping fit, are you insinuating she’s got credibility regarding anything else…?! LOL

  11. Christina says:

i know plenty of slim people who don’t work out and don’t exactly eat healthy. however, they don’t have as much musculuture around their midriff either… usually those muscles on the sides of the lower tummy aren’t visible unless you work them out… they’re relativaly weak muscles… so i call her bluff

  12. kate says:

no, i don’t believe a word of it. no way her abs are that toned (especially at her age and after having a kid) without something more than sitting and breathing and chasing a toddler. but whatever …she still looks fab!

  13. Megan says:

She’s got a six pack, how could you get that without a proper workout? I also love how it says ‘How to get a body like mine’ when her story is a pack of lies. ‘Yeah just like eat whatever you want, do the occasional stretch and you’ll have a six pack in no time!’

  14. daisy424 says:

She is 36 and has had a child. She has to do alot of sit-ups to maintain her waistline.

  15. Rhianna says:

I doubt every word out of her mouth, but the thing that gets me is the Terminator eyes in the top pic. They look freaky! 😯 The fake boobs don’t help.

  16. cara says:

She looks great…but her stomach was mos def airbrushed. But, I believe her…..walking, a simple yoga routine and being sensible about what you eat can do wonders. ( I say that about her stomach because I’ve seen pap shots of her in a bikini and she was fit, but wrinkly like all the rest of us mere mortals )

  17. neelyo says:

‘There are many girls who unfortunately look up to her(this is what the world has come to) and she’s doing a great disservice to them all.’

Not since 1996. Who cares about her diet and her fake body? There’s always been a fat person screaming to get out of her and you can’t tell me that yoga suppresses her. She’s on the Janet Jackson exercise plan.

  18. delilah says:

I have a sister who has a bod like that and doesnt work out…although she’s pretty Atkins diet-wise. She’s 44 and looks amazing. Makes me want to cry. 🙄 Geri has got in shape for the photos, clearly (as would I if I was in her position) and shouldn’t really act as though she just happens to look like that…

  19. vdantev says:

Another candidate for my locked closet starvation therapy.

  20. Anthony says:

    @neelyo

Well, I don’t care about her diet nor her fake body as you put it(I bet she’s pulling in her stomach in the pics plus photoshop) but I do care that she’s trivializing and glorifying eating disorders. I also do care that we live in such a fake world. She loves it because it serves her needs but I hate it. And I truly don’t understand how it is OK to be so talentless musically like she is and still make millions out of it. Nor do I understand why the media follow people like her around. Why do they have to insult our intelligence to that degree?

By the way, still not sure I can post links here but I will try… here’s the article I was talking about:

    http://justjared.buzznet.com/2008/08/07/geri-halliwell-bluebell-madonna-birthday/

If you click on the pics below the article, which were taken on August 6th, you can see that something’s fishy here…

And as you say, neelyo, there’s always been a fat person in her screaming to get out…

  21. Vannuccia says:

She’s lying, she works hard for that body- how does she explain the photos of her constantly working out with her trainer a few months ago?! There’s no shame in admitting she works hard for the way she looks (she looks better than she ever has!), but at least be truthful about it.

  22. Anthony says:

“she’s trivializing and glorifying eating disorders”

Sounds like a contradiction but somehow she manages to do both at the same time!

  23. paris herpes says:

Weird, all I do is yoga and I eat mostly semi-healthy stuff. I think I only eat when I’m hungry though, and that’s not all the time nor do I eat very large portions.
She probably does the same, but I distinctly remember her getting in shape with her personal trainer, so part of this is a big fat lie. She was bigger right after she had Bluebell, so she had to get in shape STAT for the Spice Girls Reunion tour. She looks pretty good now though. Not too thin…

  24. neelyo says:

Anthony, I do think it’s disgusting that any celebrity should trivialze those things. What I meant was, who cares about Geri Halliwell?

  25. Tammy says:

Man you guys are a bitter bunch. It is possible to have a body that shape and size with little to no exercise and little to no effort diet wise, but the muscle tone is airbrushed, just like all magazine photos are.

  26. Spoonman55 says:

    Who Cares???

She looks hot for an over the hill chick-I guess if you have it might as well flaunt it.

Seriously, does anyone really care about an aging over the hill Spice Girl???

Oh sorry-I guess you English blokes need the Spice Girls to complete you like we Americans need a trashed up Brittney…

  27. Yeah, stars can eat all the junk food they want, because they work miracles with photoshop these days.

  28. Anthony says:

Sure, Tammy, it’s possible, I have a body better than hers with almost no exercise but I ‘m not pretending that I can eat whatever I want. And since Geri chose to reveal in the past that she too cannot eat whatever she wants and be thin, why pretend otherwise now?

And why is it OK to airbrush? Some vulnerable women out there who don’t know the process involved get very depressed and I want to tell them, don’t worry, most of what you see ain’t real.

And anyway, how is it possible that people are not fed up with her antics to do regarding her weight?!?! Did anyone bother to take a look at the link I posted in a previous comment?

I have struggled with an eating disorder for years yet I do not make it out be news worthy of articles in magazines. And if I ‘m ever famous- and given the industry I ‘m in, that is very possible indeed- I would not cash in on my eating disorder nor flaunt my flat tummy in stupid magazines. Seriously, what is the point of all those photoshoots? And at the end of the day, what is the point of Geri Halliwell?

People are dying in Georgia/South Ossetia as we speak(oh, yeah, I know, an end to hostilities was announced today by the Russians but apparently, there’s still fighting going on in remote regions) and surely in other parts of the world, and that’s what we need to be focusing on!

OK, now, enough about her. I would like to thank celebitchy for giving me this outlet to express how I feel about this issue. I guess I had been bottling it up for years.

So, I ‘m off now. I promise you won’t see me talking about her on this or any other thread here ever again. Thank God, I have better things to do! 😉

  29. paris herpes says:

IT’s weird how they photoshopped her pupils out of that picture. There really wasn’t no need, as for the airbrush, maybe there was need.

  30. Janice says:

Really sick and tired of celebrities saying things like, “I eat junk and don’t work out”. You can, but very few if any will look like that. You’d be soft around the middle. I’m a trainer, and maybe I get one in a couple of hundred who can do that. Own up to it, make yourself human, have flaws, and admit you have to work to look like that, you’ll gain more respect!

  31. Christina X says:

I think it’s alright to eat whatever you want in moderation, but she must be eating REALLY small portions for high-fat, high-calorie foods like that.

  32. Megan says:

Exactly Janice, I eat junk food and don’t work out, and I’m slim, but I don’t have abs like that. Those muscles of Geri’s have been worked at, whereas I’m soft and squidgey round the middle, however slim I am.

I think Geri has had problems with being honest about food and exercise before, but I thought she’d maybe grown out of it. Remember when she was sickly thin for ages and went on about how much junk food she ate then? Yeah… lies.

  33. I like your texts very much. That is why I like to use them in my work, if it is ok for you. I am interesting in that topic, and I need you help. Please, say YES. Thank You
