Singer and mother of two Sarah McLachlan, 40, is splitting up with her husband of 11 years, Ashwin Sood, who also happens to be the drummer in her band. Sarah and Ashwin have two children together, daughters India Ann Sushil, six, and Taja Summer, one. McLachlan told Billboard that she’s going through the separation characterizing it as “pretty gross,” and said there are two new songs on her upcoming greatest hits album, due out October 7, which are about the problems in her relationship:

Sarah McLachlan not only announces that she and her husband of 11 years are splitting, but also takes the opportunity to plug two songs about the tumultuous times.

“U Want Me 2” and “Don’t Give Up on Us” both appear on her upcoming greatest hits album “Closer: The Best of Sarah McLachlan,” which comes out Oct. 7 via Arista Records in both a single-disc version and a two-CD deluxe package.

“I’m separating from my husband, so these are the songs about that,” McLachlan, 40, told Billboard.com.

McLachlan and her husband Ashwin Sood, who plays drums in her band, reside in Vancouver. They have two daughters, six-year-old India Ann Sushil and Taja Summer, 14 months.

“I wasn’t planning on saying anything,” McLachlan added, “but it’s gonna come out at some point. I haven’t said anything about it because I’ve been terrified to, but I figure … there’s no good time to say it, so I just said it.”

McLachlan called the situation “pretty gross” but did not elaborate on reasons for the separation or the couple’s future plans.

She described “U Want Me 2” as “about that really uncertain, confusing place at the end of a relationship when there’s no communication or closure, everything’s still up in the air and there’s a lot of anger and sadness. It’s sort of that working through ‘How do we move forward … with some dignity and grace.”

“Don’t Give Up,” she said, is “pretty self-explanatory, basically just a plea to give it another chance and keep trying.”

You can hardly blame her if her husband did something unforgivable. It sounds like he may have cheated to me, but who knows. The lyrics to “U Want Me 2” just make it sound like they drifted apart and/or didn’t get along.

It was widely assumed that People Magazine’s exclusive ongoing stories about singer Shania Twain’s husband’s affair were fed to the magazine by the singer. They just seemed to be certain about the details and were publishing personal photos that could have come from Shania herself. McLachlan is getting the word out through her songs instead of dishing to a magazine. It’s more honest if not as clear cut on the details.

  1. Baholicious says:

Actually in the beginning, Ashwin Sood left his wife for Sarah. The former Mr. S also happened to be Sarah’s very good fried. Anyway, that whole mess was turned into the song ‘Adia’ in which McLaclan is said to have apologized.

Who knows the details but I suppose the details will come out eventually.

    • Liz says:

I was just thinking – Didn’t she have an affair with Sood while he was with another women ( a friend of Sarah’s)? Once a cheater always a cheater, what did she expect?

  2. JaneSays says:

So…it’s not OK for guys to kiss and tell but it’s OK for women to do so, and for profit? Sorry, but “personal” problems should remain personal, especially if you are a public figure who has kids.

  3. Strawberry In Disguise says:

I really do like her songs and respect her work as an artist, but to drop the bomb before launching the album and to ‘use’ her divorce as a means to propell the interest is hmm hmm hmm. *shakes head

“U want me 2” sounds like sms text speak somehow đŸ™‚

  4. Claudia says:

LaineyGossip had reported on the split in MAY so it’s not news to anybody who checks up on Sarah more often.

All she did was confirm rumours and since Ash was also her drummer it is something that her fans worry about a lot so it was only fair of her to finally talk about it.

Sarah would never just talk about it for publicity, she’s merely open about the topics of her songs.

And referring to a previous comment:
Ash never left his previous “wife” (girlfriend is correct here) for Sarah. They were seperated already back in the early nineties before he and Sarah got together. Sarah and said ex-girlfriend of Ash are still best friends as far as I know.

  5. Leandra says:

Ashwin Sood was dating Sarah’s best friend and there was a bit of friction there over that, but then Sarah’s friend was okay with it and wished them well. Seems to me both of them are well rid of him.

  6. Ron says:

Love her. She is, generally speaking, very private. Sometimes, you just have to say something to get it out of the bag and move on. Sorry about her problems though.

  7. pends says:

anyone who has followed sarah’s career knows that she is incredibly private with her personal life and has never achieved an ounce of undeserved fame from blabbing to the press or pulling lame stunts. she probably just wanted to clear up the rumors that have been circulating.

  8. Codzilla says:

Wow, her best friend is a lot more forgiving than I would have been.

  9. lori says:

actually her best friend married to ashwin committed suicide in 1998. Maybe she wasnt that ok with it and forgiving.

  10. Rick says:

    I think Sarah is beautiful.
I hope that she makes it through the pain of this divorce.

  11. allabout says:

Looks like cheating to me. I just hope they can keep the kids from going crazy.

  12. Dawn says:

Wow, Lori, you should learn your facts before speaking. Sarah’s best friend is alive and well, and is even on the Afterglow DVD I believe in one of the “behind the scenes” when Sarah is out with her friends and her daughter on a boat. Considering the Afterglow tour was 2004/2005, it’s doubtful she committed suicide in 1998. And, Sarah’s friend wasn’t married to Ashwin Sood. Not even close. Geez.

  13. Courtney says:

Love her. Hope she gets through it ok. I agree that it sounds like he cheated, and she (and her best friend) are better off wishing him good riddance. Either way, I’m sure there are some memorable tunes on the way.

  14. kei says:

Eversince I knew it! Mr. S was not a deserving husband for her. I’ve noticed a video concert of Sarah… the husband was flirting with women :O

is she still datting Brett Wilson?
