Country Music Loves Kenny Chesney Even if Renee Zellweger Doesn’t

Kenny Chesney, former temporary and fraudulent spouse of Renee Zellweger, has been nominated for his sixth straight Entertainer of the Year Award by the Country Music Association. Chesney won the honor three of the previous five years and is odds-on favorite again this year on the momentum of seven total nominations for 2008. He seems pretty stoked about it, so it would appear he thinks more highly of the CMAs than the Academy of Country Music awards, which he derided earlier this year for letting fans vote after he won the ACM Entertainer of the Year. Evidently Mr. Chesney doesn’t think the people who buy his albums are qualified to decide who is the best entertainer.

“NASHVILLE (AP) — Kenny Chesney, the Country Music Association’s reigning entertainer of the year, dominated the CMA Award nominations on Wednesday with seven, including album of the year.

Chesney was also nominated for entertainer of the year again, a category he has won for the past two years. Other nominees for the award included Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, George Strait and Sugarland.

“Mornings like this is where you know the music that means so much to you means something to other people, too,” Chesney said.”

Country music legend George Strait follows in nominations with five, as does duo Sugarland. Sugarland’s single “Stay” is nominated for single of the year and if you haven’t heard it, and have any love in your heart for country music, you must listen to this song. One acoustic guitar, one deeply connected voice, and lyrics from the “other woman’s” point of view and believe it or not, you will sympathize! Classic country cheatin’, but with a twist, and one powerful effect.

Other nominees include Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts, The Eagles, Lady Antebellum, Allison Kraus, Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, Alan Jackson, Jason Aldean, Rodney Atkins, Kellie Pickler, James Otto, Emerson Drive, Brooks & Dunn, Little Big Town, Big & Rich, Montgomery Gentry, Trace Adkins and country music’s golden girl, Carrie Underwood, who was nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year, an award she’s won for the last two years. Gloat all you want, Carrie, Jessica’s coming for you next year!

The 42nd Annual Country Music Awards will air November 12th on ABC.

Whatsup, Ceilidh. I think the CMA’s have been around longer? That’d explain why he’s more stoked on them, if they’ve had more time to gain respect.

  2. geronimo says:

    Hey Ceilidh!

You’ve only got to look at the CMA hall of fame line-up to understand why these awards are infinitely more prestigious than the ACM ones.

Never listened to KC before, quite a nice voice.

  3. Syko says:

I just don’t like him. Don’t know why. Just one of those irrational dislikes.

    Welcome, Ceilidh!

  4. Codzilla says:

I don’t like him, either. As a fan of classic country music, I think he epitomizes the bland, watered-down sound that has taken over the genre.

  5. breederina says:

Thank you Codzilla.Ditto. And what is with the ever present cowboy hat ? Even real cowboys remove their hats on occasion.

  6. Syko says:

Exactly, Codzilla. He even looks bland and watered down. Where are the Waylons, Haggards, Jones and Willies these days?

My favorite country singer EVER is a Canadian, Ian Tyson. LOVE LOVE LOVE him.

  7. geronimo says:

Steve Earle. Doesn’t get any better. 8)

  8. Mairead says:

you’re listening to “Galway Girl” aren’t you geronimo? – go on, admit it 😆 😆

And welcome Ceilidh – do we have a Scottish blogger fond of a dance in our midst? 😀

  9. geronimo says:

And how brilliant is that, M! I’ve seen him live a couple of times, the business or what! Yep, I like my country raw and unadorned. 8)

  10. audrey says:

all you guys need to check out BUCK OWENS! He is unreal

  11. Syko says:

Unreal but unfortunately dead. Not touring these days. But yeah, I like the old ones myself. Ever hear of Faron Young? Check him out on YouTube.

    (Also dead).

  12. Codzilla says:

Geronimo! Steve Earle is my FAVORITE musician of all time. I thought we were a dying breed …

Ps: Dwight Yoakam (one of the few great current artists) released an album of Buck covers, if anyone’s interested.

Syko, haven’t heard Ian or Faron, but will check out pronto.

  13. geronimo says:

Codzilla, he’s huge here, has been since the late 90s, and in Ireland. The real deal, sets the standard for me. I knew I’d be in good company! 8)

Syko, you an Earl Scruggs fan? Doc Watson? Ricky Skaggs?

  14. Syko says:

Not really, Geronimo. I know who they are but they’re a little more bluegrassy than I really like. I’m more of a honky tonk sound fan.

  15. geronimo says:

    Gotcha. 😛

  16. Lynn says:

Why did he and Renee break up? Does anyone know..I know that no one cares but I am curious.

  17. audrey says:

SYKO– uh, yeah buck is dead (for awhile now – I had the pleasure of meeting him in Bakersfield a few years back), but you can still check out his music..

  18. daisy424 says:

    Ceilidh, welcome 😀

Codzilla, I’m a Dwight Yoakam fan also.
    Tim McGraw too.

  19. Codzilla says:

This is so exciting for me. Nobody around here likes good country music, so I’m always surprised when I find kindred spirits.

  20. vdantev says:

Is there any male country singer who ISN’T going bald?

  21. Syko says:

Audrey – I know. 🙂 I grew up on country music. First time I ever saw a live concert was when Jim Reeves played a little bar in our podunk town (state capitol, still podunk) and my mom took me to see him, and he was so bemused with a little girl (I was maybe 8 or 9) coming to see him, that he kept dedicating his then-hit “Bimbo” to me, and sat with us between sets.

    Also dead now. *sigh*

vdantev, everyone knows male pattern baldness is caused by too much testosterone. That’s why bald men are so sexy.

  22. vdantev says:

Yeah, those recessive genetic traits that can lead to cancer and bone disease can really turn a girl’s head, Syko. Makes my heart go all fluttery.

  23. Codzilla says:

I’ll still take the testosterone-laden alphas, whatever the risk.
