Early buzz on Katie Holmes’ performance in ‘All My Sons’ is positive

The big question about Katie Holmes Broadway debut – “Is she going to be any good?” – may be answered. Last night’s preview of the Arthur Miller drama “All My Sons,” which stars Holmes, along with acting powerhouses John Lithgow and Dianne Wiest, has created some positive buzz around the show itself and Katie’s performance in it. But the night was nearly eclipsed by her husband’s presence in the audience – which drew a crowd of Scientology protesters outside the theater and a number of Tom Cruise fans who were clapping and cheering for him just as the curtain was about to go up.

The play started about 10 minutes late and the house was forced to dim the lights several times just to calm the flurry around Cruise.

“I’m very proud,” the actor said of his wife before the curtain went up.

The rest of the night was about serious drama as Holmes held her own among Broadway veterans John Lithgow, Dianne Wiest and Patrick Wilson, who plays her love interest.

Holmes exuded the same lovable charm she did as Joey Potter on TV’s “Dawson’s Creek.”

She shed the baggy T-shirts and jeans she has been sporting on the streets of New York for the past several months of rehearsals, revealing a rail-thin physique in ’40s-style sundresses.

Audience members, many of whom bought tickets far in advance and traveled into the city especially for the show, agreed that Holmes gave a solid performance.

“It was a great play. I loved it and Katie was very good,” said Robette Holland, 53, of New Jersey.

The real reviews on the show won’t come out until the official opening night in October, but so far, it sounds like all Katie’s hard work is paying off. I do wonder how she feels about her more famous husband getting so much attention on her big night- but by now, she must be used to it. Remember how he upstaged her at the “Batman Begins” premiere by riding in on a motorcycle, overshadowing the film’s stars by signing autographs on the red carpet?

Good for her!!:) Maybe it’ll give her confidence to leave the SCientology life!

  2. geronimo says:

Really hope the reviews are good although wish Tainted Tom would quit hogging her and the show’s spotlight.

  3. Anon says:

I’m happy that she did well. Hopefully she believes it’s because *she* did well, not because scientology made her do well…

  4. breederina says:

I don’t suppose it would occur to ZOAZ to watch from the wings or to slip into the back of the theatre unnoticed. Yeesh what an arse hat he is.
Anon makes a great point. Katie’s so far gone that even if she owns the role she’ll probably think it’s because of her Scieno studies.

  5. vdantev says:

The entire Celebrity Center staff must have turned out for the show. 🙄

    Xenu protects.

  6. CiCi says:

omfg. that is the happiest that girl has looked in AGES. katie, look at that genuine smile in the first pic – haven’t seen it since Dawson’s Creek! Go away, Tom. 🙁

  7. Mairead says:

Well, it’d be nice for her if theatre was her niche; Xenu knows she’s just not that interesting onscreen. But in fairness I am glad she’s getting decent reviews, I wouldn’t like to see her fail, and I especially would not like to see the production fail.

Is it just me or is she not looking very well over the summer – perhaps its the flash or lack of makeup, but she looks very tired or maybe even a little unhappy in the headline pic.

  8. Megan says:

THERE’S the Katie smile again, she is the cutest! Get rid of Tom Cruise!!

  9. Bodhi says:

Mairead~ I agree. She just looks unwell most of the time

  10. Kaiser says:

@Breed – 😆 ZOAZ… I think only Bad Thetans spell Xenu with a “z” though (and now I’m singing “Liza with a Z” in my head). It probably should be XOAZ. 😉

In the bottom pic, with Lithgow, she looks exhausted and strung out. The Bot is so sad. 🙁

  11. Kaiser says:

    ZOMG ZENU WITH A Z!!!

    *jazz hands*

  12. Nick Pilla says:

Funny how Katie never smiles that big around Rock Hudson…er, I mean Tom Cruise.

  13. Isla260 says:

I am very happy for her. She put in a lot of hard work this summer. I am glad it paid off. She shouldn’t take a fall for her hubby’s antics. She has always been a decent actress right from her Dawson Creek days and seems like a nice girl. She is no Meryl Streep but better than many.

It always galls me to see a section of the public vilifying someone who has done nothing wrong. There are so many people in need of vilification or saving for that matter. Katie Holmes is fine and seems happy in her marriage. She has never been the most lively cookie in the jag but has a very cute smile like the one in the first picture.

Fingers crossed the reviews are positive like the early buzz. Her co stars seem nice too.

  14. geronimo says:

“Katie Holmes is fine and seems happy in her marriage.”

Isla260 – agree with most of what you’ve said here but please, walking around for the last 12 months like an ill-treated dog, resigned to its fate, does NOT indicate a happy marriage. It’s the one reason I can’t beat up on her. She knows she’s way in over her head and can’t do anything about it. Not with a daughter at stake.

  15. JK says:

She does seem to be happy, and by all accounts, she’s a very nice and normal girl with one of the most adorable babies I’ve ever seen, so I hope it does last for her.

I’m also glad to hear she’s doing well with the play because with a cast like that and material like this, she can’t do poorly, not when she doesn’t have the greatest credibility as an actress anyway.

But even if she did suck, I’d go see it anyway. Not just for John Lithgow or Dianne West, who are both fabulous, but just to sit in those seats and hope that this will be the scene Patrick Wilson takes his shirt off. Yum.

  16. breederina says:

kaiser, which way would you prefer it to be, as creatrix it’s your call, XOAZ or ZOAZ ? He who must not be named is named anew in my book, just sort me on the spelling. 🙂

  17. Kaiser says:

@Breed- Let’s do ZOAZ. That way I can do ZOMG ZENU WITH A Z!!! *jazz hands*

    coughcough. Carry on.

  18. Mairead says:

    XOAZ/ZOAZ – Xenu on a zimmerframe?

    I’m lost lads.

  19. Kaiser says:

@Mairead – ZOMG ZENU ON A ZEBRA…it’s old-school, from like two weeks ago.

    Slut.

  20. Mairead says:

Surely I can’t be expected to remember back THAT far! 😮

Oh and bring it on. Wench! 😛

  21. Jackson says:

People shouldn’t knock their religion until they have experienced what it can do for them.

  22. Baholicious says:

I was really enjoying the spirit of this thread – not that I understand what the kcuf is going on (that holds true for a lot of things, LOL) – then Jackson had to go and piss tolerance all over the parade…

  23. Lola says:

I am glad she did well. Many people were waiting to sacrifice her at the stake. People always look for someone to knock. I am glad she disappointed such characters. As for anonymous, their actions alone tell a different story from what they want to potray. What would they say if members of that scientology church picketted the play of the wife of a former Scientologist? You don’t harrass people to fight evil. That is like screwing for virginity.

  24. vdantev says:

    XOAZ- Xenu on a Zither.

  25. CL says:

Jackson, kind of like what it did for Lisa McPherson?

  26. Anon says:

Jackson: I don’t have to stick my head into a fire to know it’s bad for me, thanks very much.

Lola: scientology regularly pickets houses of critics and ex-sci’s with signs calling them child molestors and bigots.

copy/past from previous post, cause you say the same every time so I might as well…

Anonymous generally shows up to hold signs, dance, sing songs and eat cake.

The scientologists have done the following, all numerous and documented:
extensive legal harassment with as a goal to run the critic out of money so they can be forced into silencing settlements; following, intimidating and harassing critics and their family (including children); running extensive smear campaigns on people; getting people fired from jobs and/or intimidating their clients until they go out of business; critics have been assaulted; cars of critics have been sabotaged causing accidents; critics have mysteriously ‘committed suicide’ with nary a question from local law enforement (one person wrote in a suicide note that he loved his wife… and wasn’t even married).

Scientology will go to ANY length to silence criticism, and they consider themselves outside of the law. Hubbard wrote it himself:

ENEMY: fair game. may be deprived of property or injured by any means by any scientologist without any discipline of the scientologist. may be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed.

But dancing, rickrolling and cake eating Anonymous is going to be worse than THAT??

  27. gg says:

Look at that wonderful smile. The glee is what she has been missing.

She used to have lots of happiness in her life, but she’s been looking like an empty shell since about 2-3 months into her relationship with the Tom-o-tron. I’m hoping she runs with it and he stops showing his ass at her openings.

GO AWAY TOM, among other things, you lack social grace and you are tacky !! 👿

Defeat the Cult. Now is the Time.

    😮

  28. Jeanne says:

Why can’t this woman show some teeth more? Sure she may be smiling in this pic, but in hundreds of other shots she’s all smirks and sunglasses. She looks ill to me. And speaking of buzz, I would need to have a big buzz on to see her perform in a play. Yawnsville!!
