Matt Damon on his wife: “I met her and everything got easy after that”

fp_6762813_adjustmentbureau
Matt Damon says so many nice things about his wife of nearly six years, Luciana, that you wonder if they ever fight. Like what’s life like at the Damon mansion in Miami? When Matt isn’t on set do they play happily with their kids during the day, marveling at the cute things they do and letting nannies change diapers? Do their evenings consist of sitting down to chef prepared gourmet meals and then retiring to their huge master suite to have kinky sex? I’m sure that’s just my fantasy and that life is still a pain in the ass for super rich married people who seem to be hot for each other, but it’s probably less of a pain.

On Ellen, Damon told the story of how he met his wife in Miami where he was somewhat accidentally filming that otherwise bad career move, Stuck on You. (He never names the film, which goes to show how much he thinks of it.) He almost didn’t go out that night, but then he reluctantly went to a bar, saw his wife working there across the room and the rest is history. It’s also a nice tie-in to promote his new movie, about fated romance vs. career, The Adjustment Bureau.

On turning 40 and “the big questions that weren’t answered when I turned 30”
Well I always hoped that I would meet someone that I wanted to spend my life with and start a family with and then that happened. But before that happens, you’re going, “I wonder if I’m ever going to meet somebody.” And then I met her and everything got easy after that.

On meeting his wife at the bar where she worked
I decided to do this movie with the Farrelly brothers in 2002. I met with them and we talked about it. I made the decision to do that which was a big decision. We were supposed to shoot in Hawaii and then the movie got moved to Miami. I had never really hung out in Miami. One night in the middle of the shoot, the crew, a couple guys, said, “We’re going to get a beer somewhere.” I said, “I’m not really into it.” They said, “Come on,” and kind of dragged me along. We ended up at a bar where my wife was the bartender. I literally saw her across a crowded room, literally, and eight years and four kids later, that’s my life. I don’t know how else our paths would’ve crossed if that didn’t happen. If all those things didn’t happen.

[From the Ellen Degeneres show, received via e-mail]

Damon’s interview with Ellen will air today and I can’t wait to watch it! The guy always cheers me up when I see him interviewed. He has a real joy for life and he’s genuinely funny. It’s also touching to hear a celebrity gush about their partner and seem to really mean it, too. I don’t get the impression that Damon has much to hide, but he’s also one of the best actors in the world so I could be surprised. He does play “angry” exceptionally well.

i love matt damon not because he’s a good actor but he has a sexy voice too. he loves his wife and kids and that’s goes to show he’s a real man

  2. EdithP says:

Aw, how sweet! He has really grown on me over the years.

Confession: I really like Stuck on You.

  3. mister says:

    Well….boring as usual.

  4. Rita says:

Isn’t that “love at first sight” thing amazing? Unfortunately, it’s usually just a boner but when it’s real, it’s incredible.

  5. Marie says:

Honestly this will be the celebrity couple that crushes me if they ever split. He always seems to be so in love with her.

  6. Steph says:

that is the sweetest thing I’ve heard a married man say about his wife in a LONG time!

  7. Bite me says:

Another box office bomb for Damon

  8. brin says:

    Rare….a happy marriage in celebland.

  9. Jackson says:

    I seriously love this guy.

  10. TQB says:

LOVE!! I know many find the Matt Loves Lucy posts dull, but they do brighten the day for many of us.

  11. Tiffany says:

I finished reading my Feb. Glamour which featured Damon. Katie Couric started to asks about his three daughters and Damon corrected her and said four because Lucy had a daughter when they met. It was just something that seemed automatic and gosh darn it, it made me like him a lot more. I know that people find him boring but I don’t understand why.

  12. Riley says:

I think it is sweet to think about Matt feeling a little insecure about being 30 not being in a steady, committed relationship. He seems so different from his buddy, George “I have eaten too much p***y to be President” Clooney. I guess opposites attract.

  13. Leek says:

I just watched The Informant! last night and he was hilarious.

That’s sweet he loves his wife.

  14. Melinda says:

Really sweet and nice to hear. I think it’s super cute that at 30, he had the same “am I going to find some one?” moments like the rest of us normals.

  15. flourpot says:

It’s a sweet interview, absolutely. The cynic in me has to wonder – did she fall in love too? Or did she say OMFG MATT DAMON while dollar signs glittered in her eyes.

  16. Fuzzy Cat says:

Rita your post was so funny, this site really should hire you.

  17. HRH says:

Flourpot, how could she NOT fall in love with him?

  18. rachel r says:

    Flourpot-
Your post made me laugh out loud, literally. The cynic in me too thinks it was the $$$ signs. Probably my only laugh of the day. Thank you!

  19. spinner says:

Matt is right on the money about meeting his wife & then everything fell into place. I was having lunch with Tony Robbins & he told me the #1 thing you needed to accomplish before you could truly be successful was to find your soul-mate. Everyone is looking for that special someone & it is hard to really focus on anything else until that is accomplished.

  20. Jayna says:

Well, here’s a comment he made a year and a half or two years ago. A little more negative on the state of marriage, but still that he loves his wife.

“Somebody said to me recently, ‘Wow, you really love marriage,’ and I said, ‘No, I think marriage is ridiculous; I think it’s a totally ridiculous idea.’ I love being married to my wife – she’s the best thing that ever happened to me, but if she ever left me, I wouldn’t do it again. Because it’s crazy – to spend your life with one person and not be totally driven crazy.”

It sounds like he loves being with his wife and she makes marriage doable for him but that he’s not fond of marriage, per se, or why would he find marriage so ridiculous.

  21. susan says:

    i. love. him.

  22. jen34 says:

Going way back to Good Will Hunting, Matt always comes off like a good guy who doesn’t take himself too seriously. I hope he is genuinely happy in his marriage. I guess time will tell.

  23. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    so sweet

  24. Reality says:

She’s one lucky lady, that’s for sure. He seems like a really good, down-to-earth guy, and I love him even more after his hilarious guest spots on 30 Rock.

  25. dorothy says:

    Such a sweet couple.

  26. 6 says:

They are so cute and I think his wife is pretty. This seems like a man who appreciates the life he created.

  27. flourpot says:

@HRH He’s not my type and none of us know what he’s really like …other than he has really perky sperm. I think I could fall in love, tho, when I add in the houses, the nannies, the chefs and the lazy days of no more work, ever and ever, Amen.

  28. Rita says:

    @flourpot

“none of us know what he’s really like …other than he has really perky sperm”

Your can’t leave us hanging with that. Please pray tell, how doth thou knowest about thee “perky sperm”? Dish, dish!!!!!

  29. Hammer says:

Jayna: I remember that, too. Didn’t he knock her up and then marry her? Romantic. It’s a fairytale for her, though, stripper turned showbiz wife. Matt said once he has a persona he adopts for interviews, a “Mr. Smiley” or something like that. We never really know how things are behind closed doors. Because I’ve also heard that she’s a beard. So, you know?

  30. Bodhi says:

It’s a fairytale for her, though, stripper turned showbiz wife.

She wasn’t a stripper, she was a bartender. If you are going to disparage the women at least get your facts right.

Anyway… I love Matt & I think he is a great family man! And I think its pretty funny that he & Ben Affleck both ended up having all girls! 🙂

  31. bluhare says:

He’s a more interesting guy than I would have thought. What got me thinking there’s more to him than just a preppy looking dude was when I realized he’s the one who sings “My Funny Valentine” in The Talented Mr. Ripley. Which was an awesome movie; one of my favorites even with Gwynnie in it.

  32. P.J. says:

Damon has said in the past that he was looking for a woman who wasn’t connected with showbiz. That was a very smart choice, considering the divorce rate for celebs.

  33. UrbanRube says:

OK, don’t hate me. I’m willing to admit this may be total crap, but on another gossip site – and one of the intelligent ones like Celebitchy – I did read a blind once about someone who sounded very much like Matt Damon (and some related-to-him stories about someone who sounded very much like Ben Affleck) that he had brought up a “nanny” from Mexico after a vacation there and she was staying with his family. And she wasn’t just there for the kids. For what that’s worth, it was so horrible I never forgot it, and I hope the extremely sharp guessers on the site were wrong.

  34. sandy says:

i really like him, he has a beautiful family, i wish him luck.

  35. MB says:

Urban Rube – that blind peice was on CDAN and I would take the things that the author of that site (John) says with a very LARGE grain of salt.

He is a liar and a con.

  36. argirl says:

Love him and them! She’s a pretty, healthy looking woman. I can’t wait to see The Adjustment Bureau- going on Friday!

  37. crtb says:

What short memories all of you have. When they first got married, he said the most negative things about marriage and he didn’t sound very happy. And I thought that she kept getting pregnant to keep him from leaving her. I guess his publistist must have twisted his ear and had him change his tune to make him more family friendly.

  38. Dda says:

Here are some old articles on Matt and Lucy, they are so cute and I’m glad that they live relatively private lives on the East coast.

They seem like the real thing, and happy together.
I think he has one of the best careers in Hollywood, he’s balanced blockbusters with quirky little films, and seems very grounded in his home life.

  40. flourpot says:

    @Rita 3 kids in 4 years 🙂

  41. christina says:

He went to go see about a girl.

Poor Lucy. She has to kiss a guy with a “dead mouse” breath
