Jeff Bridges handed out food to homeless people after the Golden Globes

This story comes from Mike Walker in the National Enquirer. Walker regularly runs celebrity hero stories that seem implausible and too good to be true. I know this and I’ve read his column for years, but I still got choked up hearing this story about how Jeff Bridges allegedly collected food after the Golden Globes and handed it out to homeless people afterwards. Somehow only Walker has this story, which again could be fan fiction. It’s still really touching and sounds like something Bridges would do.

After attending the Golden Globes, Jeff raised eyebrows when he raided tables and the kitchen area for food, stuffing several bags with cold cuts, bread, cookies, cakes, cheeses, crackers and an array of leftover gourmet meals. Jeff’s assistants humped the mini-deli of yummies out to his limo while he exited via the red carpet and signed autographs for clamoring fans. Said my source “When Jeff finally got into the limo, he directed his chauffeur to a freeway underpass on the outskirts of L.A. When they pulled up, Jeff hopped out, waved a band of about a dozen homeless people over to the car – then started handing out the bags of food. After chatting a while, the star – who’s actually made several trips to the same underpass, passing out warm bedding and clothing as well as food – got back in his limo and took off as the homeless people applauded and cheered!”

[From National Enquirer, print edition, Mike Walker’s column, March 28, 2011]

I like to think that Bridges has a soft spot for the homeless, that he took time out on the night of the Globes to deliver food, and that he’s been quietly doing charity work without telling anyone for years. That would be the Bridges we know and love, the nice guy who doesn’t seek publicity for his good deeds.

He is awesome, that is all.

  2. Rita says:

I hope this is true and suspect it is. Such a great thing to consider your moment in the sun to be secondary to the needs of people you don’t even know.

  3. Eve says:

It may be fan fiction but it feels like something he would do.

  4. brin says:

Ok, I knew he was a great guy but now he really gets my respect. It’s nice to read about the Jeff Bridges & Sandra Bullock stories in between the usual d baggery (even though that’s what we love!).

  5. helen says:

I wonder if, in the same spirit of charity, he would drop by my office and hand out free sexual favours? Gosh, I hope so.

Jeff, there are people with crushes on you who desperately need your help! Please give today πŸ˜‰

  6. Diane says:

From what I’ve heard about him over the years, this rings true to me.

    If true, he is AWESOME!

  11. Reality says:

Love him, but I don’t believe anything in the National Enquirer, even the positive stuff.

Oooh – I hope that’s true! Gives me warm fuzzies!

    The Dude Abides

  14. Uzi says:

Bravo Jeff…Nice to hear he hasn’t let stardom go to his head!

  15. Isabel says:

I will believe it because he has nothing going on that warrants some kind of spin story to be released. He’s just an awesome dude. Even if he didn’t do it, he’s an awesome dude. I just want to hug him forever. And have him tell me stories. While sitting on rocking chairs around a campfire in the desert.

  16. lucy2 says:

Hope this is true. If so, he’s even more awesome than I thought.

  17. Someone Else says:

We need more Dudes in the world.

  18. aenflex says:

i also reas this in usa today yesterday

    Jeff Bridges Rocks.

  24. Ivy says:

I have loved this fella since I first saw him Starman – he just gets more awesome and betterer as time goes on. Smooches, Jeff Bridges – what a class act.

  25. TQB says:

I want to believe this, and thus, I will. It’s not like if it turned out not to be 100% true I would be disappointed in the Dude anyway. He is just a fantastic person.

  26. Kim123 says:

Great story I just never believe Walker maybe someone will ask Jeff about the story so he can confirm or deny it.

  27. Aqua says:

Now that’s my kind of man!I love these feel good stories especially considering all that’s going on around the world right now.If it’s true it wouldn’t surprise me at all. He’s involved or has a charity that is trying to end childhood hunger.

  28. Tiffany says:

I am inclined to believe this because he is a people person. PBS did an American Experience on him and I did not know or have seen his entire film collection but hearing him and others talk about you knew he was a actor and not a star which is why he is still around. I advise everyone to watch it, it was very well done.

  29. Harley says:

Love The Dude. Always have. Always will. I hope this story is true.

  30. JM says:

Fantastic actor and all around great Dude. This man is a class act who clearly hasn’t let his fame & fortune go to his head. Bravo!

  31. RADC says:

It seems like something he would do. I saw a movie he did in 1996 called Hidden in America about homelessness in Seattle.

  32. Nudgie says:

I think it’s true – the Dude has always been a “nice” guy and certainly has nothing to gain from a ‘touchy-feely’ story planted to make him look good.

    Karma does work, eh?

  33. xxodettexx says:

he just seems like such a cool dude…

    i’d hit it… πŸ˜‰

  34. Mary Jane says:

    The Dude TOTALLY fuckin’ abides…

I’ve heard other tales about JB doing stuff for the homeless so I totally believe this.

Check out his website — it’s the COOLEST! Maybe he says something there.
    http://www.jeffbridges.com

    JB for HGF!
(Hell e’en Beau and Lloyd were hotties back in the day… how about an all Bridges HGF?)

  35. fancyamazon says:

YAY! I love this story. <3

  36. the original bellaluna says:

J’adore Jeff! I think it’s absolutely wonderful, and I believe this story is true.

The amount of food wasted in this country is a disgrace; especially when you consider all the starlets starving themselves (BY CHOICE!) at these events. Why shouldn’t the ample amount of left-over food (untouched) go to those who so desperately need it?

  37. Jules says:

Jeff Bridges is the man. He even looks like a homeless guy these days with all that facial hair…ha!

  38. Aqua says:

@ Mary Jane I totally agree! I just love all the Bridges men.

Kaiser how about indulging in Mary Janes and my fantasy about ALL the Bridges men for HGF PLEASE!

  39. adele macmillan says:

i am sure this is true…check out jeff bridges website and his links to ending hunger (plus his artwork, music links, etc) he is a fabulous man.
    http://www.jeffbridges.com/endhunger.html

  40. the original bellaluna says:

@ Mary Jane & Aqua – L.O.V.E. ALL the Bridges – Jeff, Beau, and Lloyd. HGF for them, all the way! But Jeff will always be my favourite.

  41. Mary Jane says:

@38. Aqua: Kaiser how about indulging in Mary Janes and my fantasy about ALL the Bridges men for HGF PLEASE!

DITTO, Aqua! Did you check out his website? One of my FAVES — awesome site!! Maybe not all Jeff, but I LOVE how they made his handwriting into a font.

I looked through the “End Hunger” page but saw nought on this… Then again, JB would ne’er toot his own horn.

Gosh, I just love this guy – he would be an awesome uncle…

  42. e.non says:

their father always seemed like such a stand-up guy; he and his wife sure did raise some righteous kids. you’ve never heard any nasty rumors about them; and they’ve been hollywood for decades..

  43. Mary Jane says:

    @the original bellaluna:
I cannot believe this is not “de rigeur” amongst those that show up on T’giving or Xmas or whate’er the “cause of the day” is? I actually do this when I go out late!
    Great comments, chiquitita! Muchos besos!

  44. Mary Jane says:

    @ 42. e.non:

Quien es mas macho, Ricardo Montalban o Lloyd Bridges?

    SIEMPRE, Lloyd Bridges!
    Sorry for lack of accents.

  45. gee_gee says:

See, I thought I couldn’t love the dude any more than I already did. I was wrong.

  46. Mary Jane says:

I cried when I saw Jeff’s tribute page to his beautiful mother, Dorothy.
    http://www.jeffbridges.com/hayem.html

She and Lloyd really raised their children right. Lloyd was my fave part of “Airplane…”

    “Bad day to quit drinking…”

  47. Jeff, You would make your father proud… Regards, David

  48. kasper says:

  49. wunderkindt says:

    What a sweetie!

  50. Newbie says:

So long as he stays humble about it and doesn’t trumpet his actions to the press, then I totally believe he means it and is doing this out of the goodness of his heart. That’s awesome. Personally, I hope he refuses to comment on this story so as not to give himself pats on the back. Doing things in secret gives you a greater reward of happiness. Doing things for public praise gives you…well, momentary public praise.

  51. Newbie says:

I’m hard on celebrities. I think that most of them are entitled bitches with no thought in their head about anything except keeping their careers alive and getting what they want. I love entertainment and movies, and I like coming here and reading the gossip. But I really don’t worship any of them or wish I was dating any of them or stuff like that. BUT…I have to say that this guy seems like a really wonderful person. Down to earth, grateful for his upbringing and for all he has/is, and good to his parents. He stays out of the spotlight too, which is a huge turn-on. I hope I never have to read about some cheating scandal or public bitchiness involving him. Well done, Bridges! Five points to Gryffindor!

  52. truthzbetta says:

Jeff helps the homeless. How could the witnesses tell who was who?

JK, I adore Jeff Bridges more each day. He used to be a guy born with looks and a daddy who could help him in the biz, and instead of pulling a Sheen he’s become the most stunning human being. This is lovely. He is divine wine in a world of grape jelly.

  53. Redd says:

    Marry me, Jeff.
