Amy Adams cast as Lois Lane in new Superman movie

This is actually the smartest move that the producers of the latest Superman reboot have made thus far. Previous casting choices include British hottie Henry Cavill as Superman, Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as his adoptive family, the Kents, and now we finally have a Lois Lane. Producers went for bouncy and sassy and mom-approved: Amy Adams. Crap, my mom is going to want to see this now! That’s the genius of it, you know? Moms love her. They will see her in anything. She’s adorable, and she‘s like a real-life Disney princess (according to my mom). But now I’m concerned that they’ll make Amy dye her pretty red hair. Lois has always been a brunette, right?

This just in — three-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams will play journalist Lois Lane in Hollywood’s revival of “Superman.”

The 36-year-old star got the news on Sunday from director Zack Snyder, who phoned her from Paris, where he was promoting his just-opened film, “Sucker Punch.” There had been a crush of Hollywood interest in the lead female role in the Warner Bros. project but Snyder said that after meeting with Adams, she was the clear choice to take on a character that dates back to 1938 and has long represented the strong, professional woman who can hold her own against any man – even if he can leap tall buildings in a single bound.

“There was a big, giant search for Lois,” Snyder said. “For us it was a big thing and obviously a really important role. We did a lot of auditioning but we had this meeting with Amy Adams and after that I just felt she was perfect for it.”

Snyder declined to discuss the precise prominence of Lois in the story or any plot details about the film but he said the role is “a linchpin” to the project and that he considers it essential that Lois — an FDR-era creation – arrives on screen in 2012 with contemporary appeal and spirit.

“It goes back to what I’ve said about Superman and making him really understandable for today. What’s important to us is making him relevant and real and making him empathetic to today’s audience so that we understand the decisions he makes. That applies to Lois as well. She has to be in the same universe as him [in tone and substance].”

Adams has shown an affinity for finding the plucky but pitch-perfect center of old-school roles; in the cartoonish ”Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” she brought a surprising amount of yearning emotion to the role of a simplified Amelia Earhart and she won rave reviews for the role of Giselle in “Enchanted” and its sly send-up of Disney princess traditions that date back to “Snow White,” which premiered just six months before Lois Lane hit newsstands in the pages of Action Comics No. 1.

Adams is coming off an Academy Award nomination for her work in ”The Fighter,” the David O. Russell film that took her into far darker territory; she played a bartender named Charlene who is fire-tested and fierce in her love for a down-but-not-out boxer portrayed by Mark Wahlberg. The film earned an Oscar win for Christian Bale, who played Wahlberg’s deliriously drugged-out brother, and he will be in the other big superhero film of 2012, “The Dark Knight Rises,” which will see Bale back in the cowl of Batman.

The big breakthrough for Adams was “Junebug,” which premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, where Adams won a special jury prize for her performance. The star’s other notable credits include ”Doubt,” Julie & Julia,” “Sunshine Cleaning,“ “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” and “Charlie Wilson’s War.” Later this year, she will be seen in both “On the Road” (an adaptation of the famed Jack Kerouac novel) and in Disney’s new Muppets film.

I asked Snyder how it feels to be making a film where every casting choice is a global news flash. ”It’s an epic thing, no doubt. But this good news is the cast is shaping up to fit that.” In the still-untitled Superman film, Henry Cavill will play Clark Kent and the Man of Steel. Kevin Costner and Diane Lane are set to play the Kents, the adoptive parents of the last son of Krypton.

[From The Los Angeles Times]

Yeah, Amy has been nominated for a bajillion Oscars (three, actually), and besides her side-gig as my mother’s “Princess Cinderella,” Amy can actually act her ass off. So, even though they’re casting a famous ginger as a famous brunette, I still like the choice. It could have been much, much worse. It could have been Jessica Biel, who was rumored for the role. It could have been Rachel Bilson (hahaha). It could have Linnocent!

Also – about her age: she’s nearly a decade older than Cavill… but I doubt it will be an issue. Amy can play younger, because she looks so young. Didn’t you do a double-take when you read her age?

OMG I also do a double take at her age. Its really hard to believe she is so old, well not old but older than say late 20s-early 30s. I am excited that they cast a older woman actor to play a younger male actor’s love interest. Doesn’t happen every day.

  2. Addie says:

    An ok choice.
Much better than Beil and Lohan- Oh sorry I mean just Linsay (forgot she has no last name from here on out)

Mila would have been better IMO though.

  3. GossBelle says:

Lois Lane is career suicide. She is the biggest C U Next Tuesday, and not in a cool respectable way either.

  4. Eve says:

Well, she’s a way better than the other possible choices. Although, the only reason I’ll be watching this is if Michael Shannon or Viggo Mortensen is cast as the villain.

  5. MarenGermany says:

very good choice. love her. she seems so genuine, down-to-earth and nice.

  6. brin says:

Actually I did a double take when I read she was the choice for Lois Lane…but if her competition was Biel, Bilson & Blohan, than she is a super pic!

  7. baby says:

nice. love her, she’s a diverse actress, and she’d make a great lois lane. good call.

  8. takip says:

ove her. she seems so genuine,

  9. Gwen says:

    She’s 36?! Wow!

  10. Quest says:

I like her, I think she would do well as Lois Lane considering the former casting in prior versions for the movie role. I think it was a smart choice – she looks good for her age

  11. I love this choice!

  12. My Darling Pinkett says:

I’m not going to lie. I don’t see her as Lois Lane at all. I’m disappointed, actually. I don’t really like Amy Adams as an actress. She’s annoyed me in every movie I’ve seen her in. I’m not sure if it’s her airy voice or something else. *Sigh* Oh well.

  13. Eve says:

    @ My Darling Pinkett:

Oh, come on…it could be worse: they could have asked Kate Bosworth to reprise the role.

  14. serena says:

    Shit. Kevin Costner? Really??
He’s awesome.. and now he plays some superhero’s dad? What the fuck.?!

  15. poppy says:

somebody’s mom must be very happy.

  16. My Darling Pinkett says:

@Eve Oh, I know it could be worse. I think most of the women in the run for it were bad choices, anyway. They were just going for some of the bigger names of the moment, as usual. I’m just glad that Kristen Stewart rumor wasn’t true! But I still can’t be thrilled by Amy Adams. She’s better than some of the others, but for me it still doesn’t work. It’s too bad Erica Durance isn’t doing it.

  17. kiko says:

omg!!they casted Henry for superman and now Amy for Lois?this movie has to be awesome!!!

  18. Eve says:

    @ My Darling Pinkett:

I understand your point and agree with most of it. I’d be a lot more concerned if we’re talking about a Marvel movie/character (yes, I realize I’m giving away the fact I’m a little bit of a nerd), but since it’s a Superman related character, I don’t care that much (though I’m really glad they didn’t choose Biel, Bilson or Barfsworth — just because I don’t want to see any of these twats in a high profile film).

  19. The Bobster says:

    Bloody ‘ell!

The purse girl should be Lana Lang, not Lois.

  20. tango says:

I’m a Mom and find Amy Adams a blah choice. Not like I wanted to see the movie really in the first place but now that Amy’s in it, I’ll definately pass.

  21. motheroftheyear says:

Just what the world needs…another Superman remake!!!

Good on her, I guess. Make that money, girl.

As far as concern over dying her auburn locks, Kaiser, they’ve got the *craziest* thing to change one’s hair color without coloring one”s hair. They’re called “wigs”. Madness!

  22. k says:

    I didn’t realize she is 36.

I would love to see a Muppets version of “On the Road.”

  23. anthrochica says:

36 isn’t old, Lol. I’m 36 and I climb mountains for crying out loud. I’m in better shape than most 20 year olds. I look so young I’ve been asked out to frat parties. Go Amy!

  24. Ja says:

Her face and life is so boring that I can’t remember a single movie she was in or a character she’s portrayed. Not the best match for such a well known theme.

  25. Myra says:

She’s not Lois Lane. But who knows? She could prove me wrong.

  26. My Darling Pinkett says:

@Eve I agree. There are some actresses who I hope never get far in the business. I can’t see Biel getting really great roles, or Bilson. Kate Bosworth doesn’t seem to do a whole lot, or maybe I’m just not paying attention. Lol. I know she has a movie coming out. Can’t remember what it’s called. Anyway, I’m not a huge Superman fan, but I like it well enough. I’m not sure there are high hopes for it after the last one.

  27. Eve says:

    @ My Darling Pinkett:

Apparently, Kate Bosworth’s main/most significant role nowadays is being Alexander Skaaaaaarsgard’s girlfriend. Besides that, I also can’t remember anything she’s in nowadays anyway.

My favourite Superman movie is still the original one (from 1978) — I have tried to watch Singer’s version unsuccessfully (never being able to endure more than the first 20 minutes). And Christopher Reeve as the hero is such an iconic figure I pretty much say “meh” at anyone else who’s played the role after him.

The only reason I’m paying attention to this remake is that I heard/read the rumour Viggo Mortensen or Michael Shannon was going to be the villain…if they’re talking about General Zod, you can bet your ass I’ll be watching this (although Terrence Stamp’s version is also iconic to me).

  28. JM says:

You are so right Kaiser. It could have been much much worse as in they could have given the role back to Kate Bosworth. Thank God they are going with a beautiful woman, with a real figure, who can actually act.

  29. Kim says:

    WHAT????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She is the worst actress out there today! Oh brother she’ll do that breathy innocent, wide eyes thing she does in EVERY Movie. That isnt acting. With all the good choices they could have made – people will pass on this movie now for sure. She is just a very medicore blah, forgettable actress.

  30. lcat says:

I love her. MUCH much better choice than KB was. I don’t even like superman(batman all the way!!), but I may see this one. Only made it through half of Superman Returns.

  31. crazydaisy says:

WHY are they remaking Superman AGAIN?! Sheesh!

That said, I like Amy for Lois.

  32. Eve says:

    @ Crazydaisy:

I think Superman Returns was a reboot, not a remake (can’t say that for sure because I haven’t seen it completely — nor I plan to do it). Apparently, Superman — Man of Steel is a remake of that 1978’s movie.

  33. sandy says:

i like this choice, better than the other ones.

  34. Jamie says:

I could see it. I actually really like Amy Adams and she’s a much better choice than Biel. The fact that Lohan was even being considered was a complete joke.

  35. lucy2 says:

I love her, but at first wasn’t sure she was a good choice. Then I thought about Cavill as Superman, and it makes more sense. This seems to be more of a grownups version than late teen/early 20s, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing at all.

  36. jane says:

Ok, the guy they cast as Superman will be too young for Adams. Gosh, this Superman movie will suck just like how they ruined all the old movies that I loved. 🙁

  37. kikay says:

i dont like amy for supermans lois lane ,i find her too boring, too plain, too old for henry cavill and her voice ,my god it gives me a headache everytime i hear her talk, not unless this is gonna be superman in cougartown, now thats a different story.

  38. helen says:

I rewatched Drop Dead Gorgeous the other day- awesome movie- and totally, totally didn’t recogise Amy Adams as the slutty cheerleader beauty queen. She is great in that.

  39. Granger says:

I love Amy Adams, but I’m not sure I’ll like her as Lois Lane. To me, Margot Kidder was so perfect — tough and driven, but feminine at the same time, with that husky voice and a face that was pretty but not TOO pretty. Adams is so … well, cute. She isn’t tough enough for my liking.

And for the record, she looks 36 to me. Where do you people live, if you think it’s shocking that a 36-year-old can look that good????

  40. dj says:

I love her and this choice! Plus, she got robbed of her Oscar this year.
