Kate Beckinsale got the ‘Total Recall’ role that Kate Bosworth wanted

beckinsale110

A few weeks ago, Kaiser was aghast to learn that Kate Bosworth was reportedly (at least, according to her publicist) up for a gig opposite Colin Farrell in the superfluous remake of Total Recall. Naturally, it was a terrible idea to consider Bosworth in a remake that shouldn’t exist at all; and while I honestly think that Colin Farrell (who is no slouch in the action department), is quite talented, I don’t see him in the Schwarznegger role either. This is probably because I just don’t see anyone filling Arnold’s formerly musclebound prowess in a sufficient and wholly unlaughable manner. For loyalists like myself, this remake has already been doomed from conception, but at least there’s the positive news now that Bosworth has been disregarded for the role in favor of another Kate, who just happens to have the last name “Beckinsale”:

Kate Beckinsale has been offered one of the female lead roles alongside Colin Farrell in the Sony Pictures remake Total Recall. I’m told she’s been offered to play Lori, who was portrayed in the 1990 Paul Verhoeven-directed actioner by Sharon Stone. In fact, that role really launched Stone’s star after she transformed from the happy spouse of Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) into someone completely different.

Both that role and the role of Melina (played in the original by Rachel Ticotin) has drawn high interest from actresses. I’ve heard that Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson are the serious contenders for the latter role. Beckinsale wasn’t among the names most often mentioned among actresses who read for Lori. But she certainly has a track record with the film’s director, Len Wiseman. They’re married, and before that, worked together on the Underworld films. Beckinsale, who just wrapped Contraband with Mark Wahlberg, is also attached to star in The Trials of Kate McCullough, to be directed by Karen Moncrieff. She is currently shooting Underworld 4: New Dawn, so we’ll have to wait a beat to see if she accepts. She’s repped by WME and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.

[From Deadline]

Sure, Kate Beckinsale is a much wiser choice for the Sharon Stone role than Kate Bosworth, but I have a hunch that nearly any famous Kate (Winslet, Hudson, Moss, Gosselin, maybe even Middleton) could eastily do better than Bosworth. She’s such a no talent who has relied on her relative good looks to get her far enough in Hollywood, but she’s no actress. Man, I bet Bosworth is seriously pissed about this little slight. She needs to look at the bright side though, for this will totally free up her schedule and give her more time not only to get papped with Alexander Skarsgard but also to convince the world that she reads Russian literature, right?

  1. David says:

    Kate Beckinsale is smoking hot!

  2. Anti-icon says:

Cool. I like Kate Beckinsale…..she was great in the movie “Nothing But the Truth.” Second time I’ve mentioned the movie, because it is really good, and she’s great in it.

What’s up with her marriage to the director….wasn’t it RockyTown there?

  3. Eileen says:

Kate Beckensale is WAY hotter than Kate Bosworth…that would be a better choice but I hope they dye Beckensale’s hair blonde if she gets the role.

  4. mln76 says:

I actually really like Kate Beckensale she totally kicks ass in the Underworld movies sooooo much better than Bosworth. I still don’t think I’ll watch this movie though.

  5. Quest says:

We should not even compare the two -Kate Beckensale is awesome, the other one (meh) not so much. Even the hotness factor is higher with Kate Becks than the Bosworth

  6. Gwen says:

A much better choice. Kate Beckinsale is quite good at action roles IMO and also a better actress in general than most of the other mentioned actresses. Still there’s really no need for the redo.

  7. KimnotKardashian says:

Kate Bosworth can play that hooker with three boobs… or maybe Kuato.

  8. Hollowdoll says:

Is it rock that I am currently doing the happy dance?

  9. lucy2 says:

Glad Bosworth didn’t get it, she’s so drab in her roles. Though I don’t get the need to remake this movie.
Anti-icon, that was a good film, and she was good in it. I think she gorgeous, but OK as an actress, but she was very good in that one.

  10. neelyo says:

    Blech.

  11. mforman says:

There is no way in heck that KB could have done this role, it actually requires someone who is able to act and she loses out on all accounts when it comes to that. Also at the beginning of the movie we like the character of Lori, before we see what happens with her. Who is not going to see KB up there and everyone knows she doesn’t have that likability skill at all. I saw K Beckinsale with dyed blonde hair and she looked great.

  12. Mia says:

All that hardwork (famewhoring) Bosworth did and she still couldn’t get the job. Oh, well…Maybe next time. Or not.

Beckinsale will do fine in the role. I still think they should cast Michelle Rodriquez in the Melina role. She has worked with Colin before (SWAT) and can kick ass.

  13. Kaye1 says:

Why can’t Hollywood come up with an original idea? This doesn’t need to be remade just like Arthur didn’t need to be remade. The originals are classics. Leave them alone! I’m also confounded by yet another reboot of the Batman and Spiderman movies. Do people really want to pay to see the same movies over and over?

  14. charlotte says:

Pardon my ignorance, but what work of any significance has Kate Bosworth done? I am only familiar with the name from perusing entertainment/gossip sites.

  15. ashleighlauren says:

As soon as I read the title, I thought to myself, “Kate Bosworth is still an actress?” And although I’m sarcastic, I’m typically not sarcastic to myself in my head.

So congratulations Kate, you are officially so far removed from your acting career that I only think of you as the dumb slut who bangs hot guys while they’re on their way up (and is then dumped because you’re a dumb slut-well, you get my point).

  16. Tiffany says:

Not suprised the Beckensale took the role, she has to keep an eye on her husband. Maybe she keeps remembering how they got together and heard about Bosworth’s reputation.

  17. original kate says:

of course, the real loser in all of this is the movie-going public, since both kates have the acting ability of an anorexic mannequin.

  18. f-ing funny says:

I love this article so much. It says exactly what I think of Bosworth. So thank you!

  19. GQ says:

All Beckincale’s films lately are crap(surely, this one also will be), but if you watch her early works – she is crealy talented. Plus, she’s hot.

    Great choice

  20. benny says:

I’m sorry, but although I think Kate Beck is better looking (less anemic) than Kate Bos, they BOTH have very little acting skills. The worst part about Van Helsing was Kate’s “acting” and accent – and that’s saying a lot. The movie was so bad all-around, yet Kate still managed to stand out as particularly bad. Just because a woman is attractive doesn’t make them a good actress. That’s what’s wrong with Hollywood generally.

  21. Hollowdoll says:

Dodged a bullet there! bwaaahahahaha! like Bosworth had a chance!

  22. Lili says:

Agree with Benny! None of them have any talent at all, and that´s why Hollywood movies are so off right now.
There is many of other talented actresses way better than them, but who just dont have the good looking skills. Just the acting skills, but in Hollywood this is not even relevant.

At the end, it’s the public who suffers with such bad quality movies and awful remakes…

Ps: I’m not a expertise, i’m just a girl who happens to enjoy good cinema outside the Hollywood box.
Maybe other people should do that, and stop worrying about the “Kates-non actresses…”

  23. Raven says:

Kate Beckinsale is way over KBosworthless level. KHo is totally irrelevant.

  24. ZenB says:

Other than being Orlando Bloom’s GF when he was hot and relevant (seems so long ago) – what has Kate Bosworth ever done? Who knew dating a formerly pretty potentially A list – C list actor could still generate so much press 7 years later that she gets papped for dating a weird looking D list actor, who looks really bored with her.

  25. Cali says:

    Great choice!

  26. shaunna says:

Zen — I gotta stick up for Alex Skarsgard here. Weird looking?/ You may need your eyes checked? D list? He’s costarring in a LVT movie opening in Cannes next month, one up for top prizes. Other than that tho, I agree with you. He does look really bored with her.

  27. Abby says:

Kimnotkardashian – I’m still laughing at Boz playing the hooker with three boobs. She auditioned two of them in Mexico and there’s definitely room for a third between them.

  28. k says:

Bosworth was the star of Blue Crush, I think. I think she did her own surfing?

That was a fluff movie, but she was OK.

She was also in one of those Superman movies

I think Bo has a harder, more Sci-Fi edgy look than Beckinsale, but they’re both a yawn.

  29. Patty says:

I never understood how Bosworth was considered for this role to begin with- in the original Sharon Stone had a couple of fight scenes, one with Arnold and one with Rachael Ticotin, so unless the script is very different, the Lori character has to be very fit and believable as a trained assasin. KB doesn’t have any muscle tone and looks like my granny could beat her in a fight! I don’t believe she was seriously being considered for this…

  30. Relli says:

I totally agree with benny! But isn’t it kind of embarrassing that kate B cannot get a job without her man directing?

  31. islandwalker says:

“of course, the real loser in all of this is the movie-going public, since both kates have the acting ability of an anorexic mannequin.”

Thanks originalkate, exactly what I was thinking. Hey, your name is Kate, maybe you can try out!

  32. Lenore says:

Ugh, spot the difference. Beckinsale may have started out as a cute little English rose in indie pics but she rapidly set about transforming herself quite ruthlessly into a perfect Hollywood shell. The fixed teeth, the plumped lips, the fake boobs, the weave, the tan, the weight-loss (from a girl who was petite to begin with), the action movies, all seemed to drain away whatever charm and talent she ever had.

Bosworth meanwhile was – I remember distinctly – the athletic, cute heroine of that surf movie, back in the day, the next big thing, before she set about doing the same thing as Beckinsale. Different accent, different hair colour, but as far as I can tell, the same vacuous former actress underneath.

It’s as if these girls are so keen to make themselves more box-office friendly, they erase all trace of individuality, all the things that got them noticed or made them charming – and then they forget to act.

  33. MaudeLebowski says:

Argh. Stop raping my childhood, damn you Hollywood.

  34. Truthzbetta says:

Why are they remaking Total Recall?

It’s not that old, it’s still awesome as hell. The effects hold up and the story and everyone were great. Watch a good movie, the real one.

Hollywood is losing me. Colin Skinny Dirty STD Guy as Arnold Schwartzennegar?

Laugh if you want, but as an action hero Arnie is iconic. You don’t remake Clint Eastwood movies. You don’t remake Arnie Classics.

  35. MarilynM says:

Awful remake idea, bad actresses. At least Bosworth was rejected, the worst of the two. What guy watching this type movie wants to see bags of bones trying to be sexy? “Created/reworked by Hollywood and using Hollywood celebrities as pretend actors” is an automatic reason for me to avoid a movie nowadays. Sad!!!

Colin Farrell is pretty good tho.

  36. Chris says:

    @Bedhead: Welcome. đŸ™‚

  37. Eve says:

That’s a no-brainer. Beckinsale would be chosen anyway since she’s married to Wiseman. It just took longer (than I thought it would) to announce her as Melina.

Both choices suck ass, in my opinion. And yes, the remake of this movie is totally unnecessary.

  38. KateNonymous says:

Is it just me, or does Kate Beckinsale look weirdly like Posh?

  39. mforman says:

This is a movie in which a remake should have never even been discussed. Some movies should be left alone.
#28–K Bos has gone down as the worst Lois Lane in the entire franchise. Blue Crush was bad, but a least she had a natural face and the toned body of a surfer.
#30–K Beck has done quite a few movies without her husband directing and he has directed some without her.
#32–of the two Kate choices, K Bos was the worst of the two, her anorexia has gone from bad to worse, and that is clearly shown on photos taken on Friday, April 22nd, she is out to lunch with a friend(a friend, really?); all the photos are bad, but the ones from the front view are scary, the bones in her upper chest look like they are about to come through her chest. The worst part and there are so many, is that she denies everything; she says she never had botox, or lip injections or face peels and I cannot believe she actually wants us to think that she is naturally that skinny, nobody is that skinny.
ASkars shouldn’t be mentioned in the same posts as her. He has talent, is smart, is very invovled in charity work (doesn’t blow off foster children to work on a tan and lets us all know that fact), has loyal friends that he doesn’t have to pay for and seems just an all around good guy, that everyone seems to like, and of course how can we forget he is gorgeous. Does she have just one of those qualities, no I didn’t think so.
Thank goodness, the nightmare is almost over with.
