Is Jennifer Lopez dumb enough to leave ‘American Idol’?

wenn33026011

Last week, I read an interesting report from gossip columnist Mike Walker at the National Enquirer. Walker claimed – or his sources claimed – that Jennifer Lopez is making $12 million this year just for her flat American Idol salary, but that Idol producers think J.Lo is worth every penny. They claimed that when it comes time to renegotiate her contract, Jennifer could easily be making $20 million a year (or more) if she wants to continue being an Idol judge. Walker’s insider source says, “The producers will do whatever it takes to keep her happy… her new contract’s their major priority.” They also claim Steven Tyler is only making about half of what Jennifer makes – but producers are convinced that Jennifer is the one driving viewership at this point.

So Jennifer find herself in-demand once again, and back on top, sort of. She’s relevant again, she’s People Magazine’s “Most Beautiful” and she’s restarting her own music career. How could she possibly go wrong? Oh, right. She might think she’s too good to do Idol now:

‘American Idol’ judge Jennifer Lopez is reportedly shopping around her own reality singing competition show, further fueling the rumors of her departure from the ‘Idol’ judges panel after just one season on the hit show.

Tentatively titled ‘Que Viva,’ Jennifer’s show would feature herself and hubby Marc Anthony talent scouting Latin American countries for future stars. The Puerto Rican couple are teaming up with ‘Idol’ creator and executive producer Simon Fuller to make the project happen. Apparently the show has been in the works for some time now.

Jenny has come a long way from “the block” — she recently snagged the coveted No.1 spot on People’s ‘World’s Most Beautiful’ list and her forthcoming studio album ‘Love?’ is generating a lot of buzz ahead of its April 29 release, following the success of her Pitbull-assisted club hit ‘On the Floor’. J.Lo’s seventh studio album will boast Lady Gaga-penned tracks and a collaboration with rapper Lil’ Wayne.

[From PopEater]

It could be that this is just some fancy way to renegotiate her contract, and this is all some kind of ploy for more money. It could also be that Jennifer intends to do both Idol and this other show. Or it could be that Jennifer is so self-absorbed that she thinks it’s all about HER and that now that she’s relevant again, she can walk away and do her own thing and everybody will follow her.

There is a blind item about a controlling/abusive husband, widely thought to be Marc. If it’s true, I wonder if he has anything to do with this…….

  2. Marjalane says:

JLo AND the producers are fucking delusional if they think she’s drawing the viewers. The talent is so interesting this season, that I’m watching DESPITE her annoying pratter. On a good day she sounds like a 14 year old Rosie Perez. I’m surprised that Steven Tyler would make less than her- I so enjoy his brain fried commentary. Randy Jackson is still as worthless as ever. “Did you know he used to be in Journey and produce Mariah Carey?”.

  3. Bite me says:

Meh, love la Lopez but I thought Idol would be ending after this season

  4. lisa says:

I had to stop watching.. because it has become the Jennifer Lopez show and not American Idol. Even the performers seem to cater to her. All that silly kissing. Really.

I doubt she is shopping a new show. I’m sure she had something in her contract about not doing something in competition with AI. But Marc being so involved in the show too was a red flag to me. The are very smart and are really trying to make her the STAR. Steven seems laid back and Randy is to lack a better word the weakest link. Plus she just talks too much and over talks the other judges.

It is the Jennifer Show.. and I for one am tired of seeing it.

  5. missy says:

She could do the Latin competition show, while still doing American Idol. Simon was doing Britiain’s Got Talent and British X Factor while on American Idol. They just tape the shows at different parts of the year.

  6. OriginalGracie says:

Phony “Jenny from the Block”: take note of where Paula Abdul is these days.

  7. searching4grace says:

She should look to Paula Abdul’s example. You leave, expect viewers to follow…and nothing. That’s where JLo’s headed for if she leaves. Nothing.

  8. searching4grace says:

    @OriginalGracie,
That’s EXACTLY my thought. But I’m under moderation, so it takes forever to post.

  9. Schnauzers!!!! says:

I am not a fan of her on Idol. Constantly talking OVER the other judges. If Randy or Steven is making a point (Usually a valid critique)she starts saying stupid stuff like “no no no, it’s not that”…I just want to say “SHUT UP WOMAN!!! You already talked….” Simon would have had a FIELD day shutting her up. 😉

  10. the original bellaluna says:

    Yes, yes she is…

And how about a little warning before that header pic? The one with the face-split-ingly terrifying smile-on-a-stick. I’m viewing on a 32 inch hi-def screen here, and let me just say “YIKES!”

  11. Roxy75 says:

Hilarious. It’s not the judges that make this show…it’s the talent! Finally, for once the Idol “hopefuls” are actually really good and I enjoy watching each week to see who does what…I usually will forward/mute/turn channel when its time for the judges to talk. FYI-I think “J-Lo” talks too much and she acts like she is no innocent and sweet and giggles…whatever woman. Most of the time she is wearing something obnoxious and gaudy and that goes with her makeup and hair…ugh. I’m over it.

  12. junk573r says:

She’s up there with Lohan on my list of red carpet faces to hate. You know that face you make when you have diarrhea and it becomes a very real possibility you might shit your pants? That is her sexy face.

  13. Jacq says:

In her 40’s and wearing a belly shirt. Of course she thinks she’s too good!

  14. jane16 says:

I can’t stand her. I really can’t stand her godawful voice. I won’t watch anything she is in.

  15. Amanda says:

    driving viewership…AWAY, maybe

  16. OriginalGracie says:

@searching4grace: I am in moderation too so I feel your pain!

  17. Truthzbetta says:

    The over-moderating thing is weird.

  18. Truthzbetta says:

I haven’t watched b/c Lopez is on, and I’ve been watching since the beginning.

I remember her as a guest judge where she frienemied the competition.

She sat there trying to upstage them on camera by wearing tight clothes and constantly angling toward the camera, and everyone performed their worst that week b/c she purposelly gave bad advice.

Jello told the one girl who could sing her ass off but wasn’t sexy she had to think about her sexiness instead of her voice and she ended up tanking, becoming so self concious about her looks. Jello told the pretty girls w/ lesser voices to stand still and make everyone concentrate on their voice alone (as if she could do that) which made them awful.

It was a backstage backstabber fest and I don’t enjoy her delusions of grandeur either. Paula was genuinely nice.

  19. SolitaryAngel says:

@Truthzbetta: I know, right? I’ve been asking nicely to be taken off mod but nope. Still stuck here. :/

  20. tomas says:

This woman has ZERO talent. As far as I’m concerned she’s in the same category as the Kardashians….spending most of her time dressing up for the cameras and jacking up her face. Oh, and that belly baring outfit…RIDICULOUS. Does she realize we’re all living in 2011 now?!

  21. Victoire says:

I wouldn’t watch anything with her in it 😉

  22. bluhare says:

    I’m moderation worthy too!

But i think this is her husband. First, it’s catering to the hispanic/latino market which is his niche. Second, it involves him!

I think CB has had a blurb about how he tells her his opinion during the AI tapings so it’s not a stretch to think he came up with their own show that has Him in it.

  23. Joe's Mom says:

Let her leave AI for her own show.

  24. chasingadalia says:

Odd. I started watching it for Steven Tyler, not J-Lo.

  25. Forelithe says:

Yes, if she was dumb enough to allow herself to be photographed from that angle with her gob wide open.

  26. justmyopinion says:

This is definitely all about Marc. It’s obvious that he’s tried to elevate his stature by hitching to her career–i.e. the movie, El Cantante, their Spanish language duos–because he’s big in the Latin music circle. And numerous blogs reported that he’s controlling and left his wife (who’s stunningly beautiful) and 2 kids for Jennifer Lopez because he was “in love” with her fame and status…

  27. anonymous says:

Sounds like a good idea but I think they should both do a show similar to Sonny and Cher, they are both good singers and performers, and Jlo can certainly wow people with her fashion sense and presently there is no variety show on TV. People should stop downing people they are entertainers that is what they do.

  28. Anonymous says:

Jlo should leave idol. For 1 she talks WAY too much. 2nd she’s annoying to listen to. And also she skirts around an actual critique. She talks about how she loves the song they picked, and always how their voice was perfect for the song they were singing. It’s so annoying!!!!

  29. Eric Loh says:

J Lo will always be the best performer in my heart no matter what. Especially the music title On the floor, simply too addicted to it.
