Merideth Vieira is leaving ‘Today,’ will be replaced by Ann Curry

Earlier this week, Katie Couric announced that she’s departing her post at CBS News; in what can only be considered a coincidence, Merideth Vieira (who replaced Couric on NBC’s “Today” show in 2006), has made her own plans to leave her anchor position as well. While Vieira will continue her hosting duties for “Who Wants to be a Millionaire,” it’s understood that she’s leaving her early morning gig for personal reasons including the desire to spend more time with her husband, Richard Cohen, during his battle with multiple sclerosis. Her decision is wholly understandable, for “Millionaire” probably tapes several episodes in a single afternon and doesn’t require nearly as much of a time committment as “Today,” in which the anchor schedule probably demands a regular 4:00AM wake-up call. Vieira will be quite fittingly replaced by Ann Curry, who has been waiting in the wings since the early 1990s for her turn in the spotlight:

Meredith Vieira will exit NBC’s Today show in June, nearly three months before the end of her contract, according to sources with direct knowledge of the situation.

Today newsreader Ann Curry will be promoted to co-host, and correspondent Natalie Morales will take Curry’s place as newsreader.

An official announcement could come as early as next week.

Vieira took the seat next to co-host Matt Lauer in 2006, replacing Katie Couric. Since then, Today has extended its run as the top-rated morning news program to more than 800 weeks. The show is critically important to NBC News’ bottom line, pulling in half a billion dollars in ad revenue last year for the weekday morning hours alone.

By elevating Curry and Morales, Today executives have the benefit of personalities who are familiar to viewers at a time of pronounced tumult in television news in general.

Vieira has been mulling an exit from Today for some time but came to a decision this week, according to sources. As recently as two weeks ago, Today executive producer Jim Bell told The Hollywood Reporter that he was hopeful she would stay. The Today team is in London to cover the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

While I always thought Vieira was a good fit as a “Today” anchor (and preferable to Couric), Ann Curry will probably slide right into regular anchor duties with no problem at all. Whenever she’s merely pinch hitting for an absent anchor, Curry always exudes a wonderful warmth and empathy for all stories while speaking to the camera. As a side note, the below photos show Vieira and Curry (in 2008) during and after an onstage “kiss” before Coldplay performed in Rockefeller Plaza. Who knew that Coldplay could inspire faux lesbianism?

Curry? I thought the fix was in for Amazon Savannah Guthrie.

  2. Kate says:

LOVE Ann Curry – she is FINALLY getting her due.

  3. Rhiley says:

I love Anne but I totally disagree with you, Bedhead. Anne is great doing field reporting, she is great behind a news desk, and she does seem like a very genuine, warm, friendly person. However, she gets really really nervous in face to face interviews. She isn’t good at asking tough questions and she often stumbles over her words and has a hard time putting her thoughts together.

  4. Rhiley says:

I bet Erin Burdette thought she may get it, and when she didn’t, decided to jump the shark to CNN, kind of like Campbell Brown.

  5. Nev says:

Ann Curry is one of the most NATURALLY beautiful women on television….along with Kourtney Kardashian. Good for her.

  6. lucy2 says:

I’ve always liked Ann and she’s good, except for that time she was fawning all over Brad Pitt, it was downright uncomfortable to watch!
I like Natalie too – and both women are very pretty.
Meredith was a good fit, and she was probably happy to leave the View years ago, but I can’t blame her one bit for wanting to be there more for her husband. I hope he’s doing OK and they’re able to take some time and be together.

  7. Gigohead says:

Sorry, but this is upsetting. NBC needed to do more to keep Meredith, whether its cutting her days down to 3 or 4 days or cutting down her work load. She was awesome on the Today show. Her ribbing with Matt and Al can’t be duplicated. Ann is nice, but doesn’t have that sharpness against the “big ego” Matt. It was fun to watch her. NBC is a failure, Failure for not keeping Conan and not keeping Meredith.

I miss Meredith on The View…

  9. truthzbetta says:

I can’t watch Ann Curry. She has no personality and is as boring as waiting for your fingernails to dry.

Her and Matt together. He looks terrible since he lost his hair and he never was a brain surgeon. Her. Ugh. She has neither substance nor fluff. TV needs one or the other– both if you’re lucky. And the show is 12 hours long now so that’s gonna be painful.

If Al Roker’s still there he’s all they’ve got left.

I’m going to miss Meredith, she was great, but I certainly give her credit for bailing to spend more time with her husband. as for Ann Curry, I’m sorry, with her breathy voice that constantly emotes sympathy, she’ll never be able to handle a serious interview. to me, she’s the epitome of a fluffy news reader and half the time her tongue gets tied just doing that.

  11. cio says:

For those of you saying she can’t handle the big stories, I’m pretty sure she’s already proved herself:

“Curry is known for her international reporting of major stories, filing stories from places such as Baghdad, Sri Lanka, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Albania, and Darfur. Curry hosted NBC’s primetime coverage and highlights of the Live Earth concerts on July 7, 2007 and also contributed with interviews for the special with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Al Gore. Curry reported from the USS Theodore Roosevelt during the invasion of Afghanistan in November 2001, and had an exclusive interview with General Tommy Franks. She reported from Baghdad in early 2003, and then from the USS Constellation as the war in Iraq began. Ann was also the first network news anchor to report from inside the Southeast Asian tsunami zone in late 2004.”

I agree with Kate. Was surprised that she did not get that seat when it first opened

  13. D says:

I’m sure Ann is a very nice person, but she is terrible on air…she is way too touch-feely with guests and co-hosts, can barely read the prompter, fumbles her words when ad-libbing and when interviewing just babbles. I have watched the Today Show for 30+ years, but will not watch Ann as co-host. She is no Meredith or Katie…not even close. They really need to get a “star”.
