Anne Hathaway & Jim Sturgess in the ‘One Day’ trailer: hot mess or just hot?

oneday1

I’ve been calling Jim Sturgess a pillow-weeper for so long, I kind of forgot that he doesn’t just exist as a vague, watery-eyed image that speaks “One thrust and weeps into a pillow” for everyone. He’s in a new movie with Anne Hathaway called One Day, and the trailer was just recently released. Now, I read the book (by David Nicholls) several months ago after Lainey raved about it. I really, really enjoyed the book until the last 60 pages or so, but I won’t spoil the story for you. So here’s what the film is about in broad terms: Anne plays Emma (“Em”), a studious, dorky, funny English girl, and Jim plays Dexter (“Dex”), a hip, cool, English boy. They meet on their graduation day at University of Edinburgh in 1988. The book follows them for the next twenty years, year after year on the same day that they met. Here’s the trailer:

I don’t hate the trailer. Lainey does – she thinks the trailer makes the film sound like one of those interchangeable Jennifer Aniston/Katherine Heigl rom-coms. Considering that I ended up hating the book (after loving the first three quarters of it), I tend to think the trailer gives me a nice taste of what to expect. I’m not too impressed with what I heard of Anne’s accent work, but I’m impressed with how grungy and dorky Anne is looking – Em is supposed to be quite a hot mess for a number of years, so at least they’re not making her “Hollywood dorky” – which is like giving Anne a blowout, a face full of perfect makeup, and then just putting glasses on her. Anne looks truly flat-out unattractive in some of the little clips, so good for her and good for them.

As for Jim… damn, I find myself being attracted to a pillow-weeper. What is the world coming to? He looks really skuzzy-hot in parts of the trailer. YAY! Huzzah for pillow-weepers!

But still, I know what happens, so I probably won’t see this in the theater. But now I know that I’ll be renting it.

    i loved this book.
if they wanted to do it set in England, why couldn’t they find people with actual English accents? This is a little silly.

I love her short haircut, I think it looks fantastic.

  2. serena says:

It looks good. I’m totally seeing this.

Anyway she really looks cute with short hairs.

  3. viper says:

I still cannot see her as Catwoman. The entire time I’m going to be laughing I know it, not out of mockery. But because I wouldnt be able to remove the person from the performance. To me itll be “Ann Hathaway playing dress up” I dont know if Ill see her character on screen at all.

It’s one of my favourite books, I even talk to strangers about it when I see them reading it! I find it strange that they couldn’t have found English actors to play a London guy and a Yorkshire girl however I hope they pull it off and don’t wreck such a beautiful story.

  5. RocketMerry says:

Yes! Good on you Kaiser for seeing Jim’s appeal!

  6. mln76 says:

hmmm I have to decide whether or not I should read this book I am guessing the ending will make me miserable. I wonder if it’s worth it???

  7. embertine says:

I’ve just read the book and though I don’t have a problem with either of these people I think this is TERRIBLE casting. Just terrible.

The book’s pretty good, and this looks like standard romcomdram fare. Agree totally with those who said why no English actors. We do have them, you know.

  8. Rachel says:

I loved this book and can’t wait to see the movie. Why is everyone saying they should have cast English actors. While Anne Hathaway is American, Jim Sturgess is English.

  9. Kate says:

I finished this book on a plane (full naturally, and sitting next to a kid and his dad) and I bawled…it was kind of embarrassing.

  10. meilamon says:

“one thrust and weeps into a pillow” So funny!

Even with a face full of makeup she is so unattractive to me. Her profile is pretty, but face on, not at all. Her eyes are too droopy or something. The accent was pretty bad too.

  11. trollydolly says:

@Kate, I was on holidays and when THAT bit happened, I just burst out crying, threw the book on the ground, and continued to cry hysterically for ages and my husband thought I had been bitten by a wasp! I’ve read it twice more since!

  12. Rosemary says:

Look forward to reading the book, but will take a pass on the movie, Anne Hathaway’s gigantic mouth and teeth drive me nuts. While I have seen a couple critics touch on comparisons of “One Day” with “When Harry Met Sally,” I was surprised that I have not see any compare “One Day” with “Same Time, Next Year.”

  13. love Jim Sturgess, love him in this trailer, traler looks good overall and this is an unusual concept for me.

  14. Jess says:

Looks fantastic to me. I know it’s a winner since the author is also the screenwriter. I loved the book.

  15. CubaLibre says:

There’s nothing yorkshire about Anne Hathaway’s accent, other than when she says the word “disaster”, for some reason (which sounds wrong anyway).

  16. mia girl says:

My feeling while reading the book and the feeling of that trailer are at odds with one another!

This trailer has light sort of vibe to it (yes romcom) and the book was so full of complex emotions that I expected the film to be more romantic drama. I’m a little confused. Maybe as Lainey says, its just a bad trailer.

  17. Az says:

Oh. That poster. I was a hot mess back then too. Love.

  18. Dizzybenny says:

    hugh,the accent is Madonna’esque.
It reminds me of the TV movie with Alan Alda i don’t remember the title maybe someone can help me out.
They met in the same cabin in the summer for like 40-50 years?
It was made back in the 80’s i think.

  19. original kate says:

even though it looks like a fun movie i think i’ll pass. hathaway doesn’t do it for me at all.

  20. Liana says:

I find it strange that they couldn’t have found English actors to play a London guy and a Yorkshire girl
    * * * *

Jim Sturgess IS an English actor.

  21. Kate says:

@trollydolly I know it was so good! I was going to holiday. I was really embarrassed and i think the child next to me was frightened (his dad might have been, too), but I couldn’t put it down!

  22. Treensie says:

Have nothing against Anne Hathaway, but I cannot see her as ‘Em’. Imagined Emily Blunt as more like Emma.

  23. ctkat1 says:

@DizzyBenny: The movie is “Same Time Next Year”- this is reminiscent of that, although Dex and Em spend more than just that one day together each year.

Anne’s accent is…worrisome. It may be better once you get into the flow of it, but it sounds like a generic “posh” English accent, not like the Yorkshire accent that always marks Em as “something different.”

    A funny example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzAD2GLfaNU

  24. Newbie says:

Uh…Anne’s accent is all over the place. I think she’s a good actress, but good at accents…well…I guess not. I haven’t read this book but I want to now!
