Yesterday, Arnold Schwarzenegger had a really big day. He faced down the press in the immediate aftermath of his separation announcement with Maria Shriver; he had to give a speech at a Jewish center in LA; he faced down a growing stream of rumors about his wandering eye during his 25-year marriage and his most recent (young) mistresses; he had lunch with some woman, and he made sure the photographers got a shot of him kissing the woman’s neck:
Does it look like a friendly peck between two people who are likely close friends? Sure. It doesn’t look all hot and bothered, and Arnold and this woman didn’t even embrace. Still… odd.
Anyway, Arnold spoke about his separation from Maria while he was at the Jewish center. He makes it sound like they still have a great relationship and that they’re working on it:
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver have separated, but they’re still in contact and “taking it one day at a time,” says the actor-politician.
“I want to take a moment and thank our many friends and family for the tremendous amount of support and love that you have given us in the last 24 hours,” Schwarzenegger said Tuesday night at the 63rd Israel Independence Day Celebration hosted by the Consulate General of Israel at the Skirball Cultural Center in L.A.
“I just spoke to Maria an hour ago before I came here,” said the former governor of California before accepting an award for enhancing the economic ties between California and Israel. “We both were saying the same thing – we’re extremely blessed to be surrounded by so many wonderful people, by so many wonderful friends.”
Schwarzenegger, 63, and Shriver, 55, said in a joint statement Monday that they are going through a “time of great personal and professional transition,” but they remain amiable.
“We both love each other very much,” Schwarzenegger said Tuesday. “We’re very fortunate to have four extraordinary children. And we’re taking it one day at a time. The bottom line is we want to thank all the people for their great, great support.”

Sounds good. TMZ also reports that Maria was basically just sick of being ignored, and that’s why she asked for a separation, and that since then, Arnold has been trying to win her back. Of course, it’s not going to stop the tabloids from digging up dirt, and why not? If Arnold has been bonin’ everything with two legs and a pulse, I would like to know. According to Radar, Maria would too. A source tells Radar, “Maria Shriver has been thinking about this divorce for a long time. She’s been really unhappy. She is from a political family so she never would have done anything while Arnold was in office. She knows what the right thing to do is and she did that while he was governor, but she was struggling with the issues in their marriage. She’s been thinking about separating for a while. She just needed to wait for the right time.” The source also said that Maria “didn’t care” about Arnold’s return to Hollywood because “He’s been in Hollywood for years and that is what his career is.”
Meanwhile, on a lighter note, Arnold and Maria’s son Patrick has chimed in on his parents’ split. Several weeks ago, I was going to cover Patrick’s Details interview, and I was going to point out what an entitled little d-bag he is. In the end, I didn’t cover it though – you can read the Details piece here. Anyway, Patrick got on his Twitter yesterday and tweeted: “Appreciate all your messages. Small speed bump I’n life, luckily we own hummers, we will cruise right over it. All will be okay. #peace”. Ah, yes. Why go to a marriage counselor when you have Hummers. Mini d-bag.

That Hummer comment sounds like a line he picked up from his Dad. Hopefully he won’t turn into as much of a pig as him.

Maria, the Kennedy wife, has overlooked Arnie’s cheating through out their long marriage. She’s from a political wife background, and that’s just what’s expected.

Poor Joan’s brother-in-law, President Kennedy, often used to refer to the leggy young blond as “the dish,” and, like Jackie, Joan supported the family’s political causes while ignoring persistent rumors of infidelities.
History repeats itself – if she stays with serial cheater ‘Ahnold’, no doubt she’ll lose her self respect and maybe even her health.

Yeah she did all she could do to become an independent woman and still became the nightmare Kennedy wife. The more I hear about this the more happy I am that she made her escape.

In my experience, men want to stay married and women want to divorce. This is especially true if the guy can have his (cup)cake and eat it, too. If a guy can have a mistress(es) to take care of his sexual needs and a wife to take care of his home and kids, he’ll never leave. Something tells me this is the case with Arnie and Maria.
sonny boy hit it right on the head – they are fucking rich. money makes a hard time a little lighter, no matter what anyone says to the contrary. Being able to afford a full spa day, new dress and expensive night out with the girls sure beats sitting at home, watching re-runs and insanely checking the cellphone.
I don’t feel bad for them. Don’t hate them but still…over it.
Why do these cheating assholes always try to win the wife back after she bails on their sorry asses?? Don’t cheat in the first place, moron. She needs to stay gone and not be fooled by his fake contrition. Those stories about him sexually harassing women would be impossible to overlook. She was a good little political wife and stayed through his term in office, but now she can take her life back.
How is he trying to get her back? I didn’t read anything that he said in that piece that implicated that. Just they were taking the separation one day at a time, still friendly enough, and thanked friend.
Shriver is funny/cool in interviews and also she’s the only famous child of nepotism who has said, when people say she got her work b/c of being a Kennedy “I can understand why they’d say that. I’d say the same thing if I were them.” Which is really honest of her. I always felt bad for her though because of how Schwarzenneggar conducts himself. I figured it’s because the examples she’s had were women who put up with what she has in her husband – a jolly, good natured playboy. Especially when he grabbed that newscaster’s boobs and/or ass, and there were pictures of it. He seems like he feels that the world of women is just his jungle gym. Like the 2nd pic. What the heck. He’s just weirdly got his mouth and arms on this lady who is walking away? maybe it’s just playfulness and who knows could even be like a close friend or one of his daughters? – but overall he strikes me as having too much presumption in his body language with women — like the boobs/butt grab thing of the newscaster. Like he’s Tarzan. Glad Shriver’s over it.
What was she thinking when she married him? He’s such a cardboard man, which makes me wonder a little about her substance.

Maria is a friend of Oprah’s and an writer for her mag. I’m sure she got support to do this from O; and why shouldn’t she ask for more than having to put up with his smarmy bs. Good for her! If she leaves him, she won’t be home alone long…
Thank goodness she finally left. I hope she divorces him and never look back b/c there are tons of men who would be utterly lucky to have her and would treat her right. I have been a huge fan of Maria and she’s an amazing heartfelt speaker – just listen to her Women’s Conference speeches, her speech at the funerals of Tim Russert, her beloved friend and her mother. However, one of the most telling interviews she ever gave was with google.com (video is on youtube) when an audience member asked her if her husband was willing to put his career on hold like she did for him and her instant answer was a sharp no, I thought it was a condescending no in that she was saying the question was stupid, but now in hindsight and I am glad for it if it’s true, the sharpness may be her resentment at the one way street her relationship was. Plus he’s clearly a cheater and has always been,
I just hope that she’s finally finding out who she is and who she is is someone who deserves to be treated with respect and to get her needs met and clearly Arnold is not that man. When someone isn’t like that for 25 years, chances are slim as in unicorn still live and are making babies with Big Foot slim, that he will ever change. I think she didn’t divorce him sooner b/c her mother was very religious and indoctrinated in the Kennedy wife (or Rose Kennedy) style of not being treated as an equal & looking the other way when your husband treats you like trash openly.
Her mom had a huge impact on her – she called her “mommy” even as a 53 year old, that says a lot. Though I love and admire Eunice K. greatly, I absolutely disagree w/ her Kennedy perspective on marriage where the wives are treated very badly and are expected to put up with it.
The only reason he doesn’t want a divorce is that he will lose half his estimated $500million fortune. So he’s bound to try and change her mind.

This is a “marriage over” that caught me off guard! And it seems kind of weird the timing since they got married April 26, 1986, and it’s around this time the marriage ended 25 years later.
Hope this doesn’t happen to William and Catherine!

One could work through a emotional or even a physical affair if this were a indiscreation that you could talk through and find a solution for you (this is a very personal decision that is not for everyone) but when your husband who you have loved and supported and raised your children is having a long term affair with producing a child who you have kept secret just goes above and beyond forgiveness. It is horrible, deceptive, and just plain everything that opposes the whole foundation of marriage. He needed to be kicked to the curb as she has, her children are old enough and wise enough to see how this is so wrong and they will work it out. Neither parents should encourage side taking and we all know that Maria is far better and more mature to ever ask her children to do that..that doesn’t mean that the Swarz won’t but why would that surprise us since he has no morals…God Bless Maria and I hope she finds support and love from her family and friends and can move forward..she is so much more than this….
