Is Tilda Swinton already a lock for every Best Actress award?

wenn3336452

In my mind, I often compare Tilda Swinton to Cate Blanchett. It’s not really fair to either of them, because both are stand-alone talents and impressively capable women. Cate is “the beauty” and Cate’s got all of the interest in style and fashion and she gets more attention overall. Tilda’s a world-class actress who quietly does her work and doesn’t seem to understand the other “parts” of being an actress – wearing pretty clothes and looking great on red carpets and magazines. So why do I compare them? To me, they both seem like aliens. Cate is the alien who has come to earth to charm, to love and be loved. Tilda is the alien who has come to earth to study us and she often fails to “blend in.”

So these are photos of Tilda Swinton’s alien-brain trying to compute what’s happening at the Cannes Film Festival. She’s promoting We Need To Talk About Kevin, a story about… well, it’s based on the book by Lionel Shriver. It’s about…sigh… it’s difficult to put in non-controversial terms. It’s about a boy (Kevin) who kills his classmates and teachers in a Columbine-like massacre. Tilda plays Kevin’s mother. It’s about whether the Kevins of the world are born that way, or whether they are made by their environments. It’s supposed to be an intense movie, and Tilda is already under consideration, nay, a front-runner, for all of the Best Actress awards and nominations. Here are some early reviews of the film from Cannes – go here and here. Here are a couple of (very difficult) clips from the film:

I love this woman. I particularly love how she is always badly dressed.

  2. Lala11_7 says:

Tilda should win every award because she is “Tilda”…that is reason enough…

And I have always made that Cate/Tilda connection …they seem to share the same…emotional/intellectual gene pool too…

  3. Hanh says:

That is one of the better outfits I’ve seen her in, but she still looks awful. I think because her face is so washed out without any good makeup. Plus she has horrible posture. I do love her shoes. Points for just being herself.

  4. kayla says:

I know she’s a fantastic actress, but her face and her entire demeanor just sort of freak me out.

  5. Micki says:

I love the work she does far away from any press. She doesn’t seem to need the attention and her self-confidence is admirable.

  6. esblondie says:

I just saw a trailer for a movie with the exact same plot, with Maria Bello and Michael Sheen playing the parents. I think it’s called ‘Beautiful Boy’ or something. Only in this flick, the son shoots up students at the university he attends, not high school…

  7. gillie says:

I love The Swinton. She’s fantastic, and is the only person I could imagine having the capacity to play such a part as in WNTTAK. (Which is a fantastic read!)

  8. LunaT says:

She’s awesome. I’ve only seen her in Orlando (really good movie. definitely suggest it). I love that she dresses how she wants and doesn’t get dolled up in ways that aren’t genuine to who she is. Huge points for that.

  9. courtney says:

Tilda is a good actress but nothin to fuss over. she kind of reminds me of Melissa Newman minus the pedigree of having Iconic parents

  10. girlnone says:

Tilda has always reminded me of David Bowie, in that they’re both hot and pale and androgynous.

  11. Solveig says:

I don’t know who the director is, but if his aim was to make us feel uncomfortable watching that – disgusting – kid, he succeeded.
I too often connect Tilda to Cate, they are both beautiful with very little make up on, both sound witty, charming and intelligent.
    Both are talented.

  12. gloaming says:

What’s awesome about this Movie is that It’s Directed by Lynne Ramsay starring Tilda Swinton but most importantly…….

    Scored by Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood!

    Another (very difficult) clip here.

  13. Sassy says:

Her movie “I am Love” is exquisite. Her clothes were done by Jil Sander in a very subdued manner. Her acting range is exceptional. She should have had an oscar for IAL.

  14. MMP says:

I don’t care what the role is, I love me some Tilda.

  15. bub says:

always loved her acting and that she is not the typical hollywood actress

  16. Trillion says:

Thanks Gloaming. Anything anyone from Radiohead is doing, I want to know about!

  17. Chickie Baby says:

Tilda is awesome on screen. My only wish for her is to put on a bit of mascara. She has lovely eyes and some mascara would really frame them nicely. But she’s great in every project she chooses.

    __________

From now on I’m going to see Jonny Greenwood instead of that boy in the movie, they look so similar… That’s creepy.

  19. esblondie says:

@Sassy – totally agree. That movie blew me away.

  20. RHONYC says:

“Tilda’s a world-class actress who quietly does her work and doesn’t seem to understand the other “parts” of being an actress – wearing pretty clothes and looking great on red carpets and magazines.”

    HUH?

her simplicity and very original, minimalistic wardrobe stylings are legendary.

i find her features startlingly beautiful. i just do.

i used to dig Cate’s look which used to be more original, but has become very, VERY ‘Hollywood’ in the last few years.

i’ll take Tilda’s unique, personal style over the cookie-cutter Hollywood clones any day.

her campaign for Pringle of Scotland and photo shoots defy the ordinary.

hell, i didn’t even know how much i liked Jil Sander until she wore it.

i will always be looking for what Tilda is wearing…like it or not, she is ALWAYS extremely interesting to look at. 😉

  21. gloaming says:

    @ Solveig

    I thought that too 😉

  22. Sumodo1 says:

Have you seen “Orlando” yet? Tilda plays a time traveler who wakes up in different eras as a man or a woman. It’s from a story by Virginia Woolf. A must-see for Swintonians!

  23. bluhare says:

@sumodo: Was just going to say that! Great movie, made even greater by Quentin Crisp as Queen Elizabeth I!!

  24. Ron says:

Tilda is and amazing actress with the ability to really morph into a character which is so rare. I got to meet her a couple of years ago when she was promoting Benjamin Button and she is such an interesting woman. I personally love to see what she will wear because she could give a f**k what anyone thinks but herself. The clips from this film are amazing and I hope that the buss doesn;t peak to early for the award season.

  25. sandy says:

yay! i love this actress and cate B. i also think she should win every award, and love that she does not care about fashion as much, it’s ok for those who do, but not everyone is so vain, there’s more to her debt wise i suppose. she is great in anything i’ve seen her in.

  26. arock says:

    @rhoyc-
totally agree, she is an amazing presence and incredibly talented person

  27. Angie says:

    @esblondie
It does look the same, especially in the second trailer. Swinton has an Oscar already – Come on Bello!!!

Beautiful Boy won at Toronto and I have been waiting for them to get a distributor ever since. Everyone who saw it said it was fantastic. Can’t wait.

Beautiful Boy is being released June 3rd in LA and NY. More release dates planned.

If you haven’t seen the trailer see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aN_Gq1aFjUU

  28. Circe says:

Did anyone else here read the book? It was SCARY. I have to say, SWINTON is an excellent choice to play the mother.

  29. Sue says:

I’m a big fan of Tilda and Cate Blanchett too.

I have a question how come know one is talking about her weight or saying she needs to gain 5 to 10 pounds? Because she is very thin and if she was someone like SJP, Victoria Beckham, Angelina Jolie, Giuliana Rancic Ex… in the first 10 comment people would be talking about their weight I just want to know why Tilda different.

  30. beth says:

i find it very hard to pin tilda down OTHER than the fact she’s spectacular in androgynous roles, like that archangel (Gabriel?) in Constantin – wow, she blew me off and I’d gladly do the same to her! i mean, WOW. then there was that role of the scheming player in Michael Clayton – I just wanted to kiss her feet. The movie, I Am Love, didnt do much for me. I KNOW she’s amazing, but she’s more amazing when she does these extraordinary roles women aren’t usually assigned to play – roles that play up to her androgyny, be it physical or psychological, and finally gives vent to all the explosive emotions she struggles (as a character) to contain, by virtue of being expected to do so. i want her in more roles like that. it’s such a rare woman who can accomplish this. cate can’t – she’s too beautiful, too feminine and you kind of am expecting an archetype with her already. tilda cannot be boxed in with her physical and psychological fluidity. oh my god, i love with this woman.

  31. LunaT says:

@Sue— I think of her as being slender. Jolie, SJP, Posh, etc? They are skinny. Scrawny. Unhealthy looking. I guess it’s possible that some of them are naturally that way, but I really, really doubt it. To me, Tilda doesn’t fit into the same category.

  32. environ says:

I’m related to her somehow. She is like a fourth cousin or something. It’s my grandmother’s british side of the family. I know that my grandma met her when Orlando premiered in NY.

I don’t want to see this movie (too depressing) but I wish her well.

  33. gobo says:

This is perfect casting. Interesting book and God, I just love ths woman.

  34. jo says:

I think she has a husband and also a female lover who travels everywhere with her… someone has to have the deets

  35. Michelle says:

Hahaha, not to make light of the subject, but my husband read this book while he was deployed and is now completely freaked out about eventually having kids.

  36. WhiteNoise says:

@RHONYC – could not agree more. A true original.

  37. mln76 says:

I love Tilda I so do the same thing and identify her with Cate Blanchett…and also her haunting performance in Orlando. But she was great in Burn After Reading too.

  38. RHONYC says:

    @ arock, beth & WhiteNoise

it’s not her androgynous roles either.

i fell in love with her in ‘Female Perversions’.

aaaand, yeah the way she spun that dr. chick, um, quite ‘literally’ around her finger…ok, maybe i was gay for her juuust a minute. 😆

  39. cookie says:

I remember Orlando, I loved that movie! I thought she was amazing in I am Love as well. She seems like she has a huge amount of confidence in what she does – which shines through.

  40. Liana says:

I think she has a husband and also a female lover who travels everywhere with her… someone has to have the deets

    * * * * *

She actually lives with her boyfriend and her ex lives across the street from them, according to her ex, John Byrne.

  41. buckley says:

She’s fantastic and I can see the Blanchett association.

Regarding Johnny Greenwood, didn’t he also score “There will be Blood”?
I am a huge Radiohead fan, but I hated that score.

  42. sauvage says:

I seriously loved the book, although it is a emotionally difficult read. I’m not sure if I want to see the movie – but I’m sure Tilda will be spledid. And the kid who plays Kevin is awesome in the trailer!

  43. Ari says:

I loved her in Teknolust and Constantine the most because she was quite evil in the latter but with a sense of blankness and Teknolust is just weird anyway but no one could play it better. I love Orlando to bits though because of the period portions and how well she melded into each one. She is fantastic. Isnt it true that she has like 2 boyfriends or something living with her? she rocks

  44. Cheyenne says:

The character she is playing in the book is Armenian-American. I can’t think of anyone who looks less Armenian than Tilda Swinton.

Anyway, it’s a difficult role (a mom caught up in a love-hate relationship with a demonic child) and I’m sure she does it full justice.

It’s not an easy book to read and a lot of people are turned off by the notion that some people are just born bad.

  45. Camille says:

Love Tilda, wonderful actress. She can wear or look however the hell she likes because she is Tilda Swinton. 😀

I like her outfit in these pics, and those shoes are gorgeous.

  46. doubtit says:

    She’s scary.

  47. Ruffian9 says:

WNTTAK really left me unsettled. A quality read for sure, but a disturbing one. I don’t know if I’ll see the movie, I’m undecided at this point.

  48. beth says:

@RHONYC: omg, Female Perversions. Thank you. I just got to see that. That is one woman I don’t want to be alone in a room with. She’ll just corrupt me with a look, i know it.

Also, my sister says because of my Tilda infatutation, I am possibly gay for longer than a minute. I don’t care.

  49. RHONYC says:

    @ Ari

    OMG!!!

not to keep this going…but i just saw ‘Teknolust’ on Netflix and it was soooo dope!

thank goodness for that Netflix ‘instant player’ & their app on my new iphone. i’ve got all her available movies on my instant queue.

  50. RHONYC says:

    @ beth

    i hear ya.

thank god my fiance doesn’t mind.

    you my dog. 😉

  51. Newbie says:

She’s a good actress, so it wouldn’t surprise me.

  52. S says:

I love her! She’s like Cate’s slightly mad older sister.

  53. P.M. says:

The stand out of the movie “Constantine” was Swinton as the archangel Gabriel. She was awesome.

  54. dubdub2000 says:

I’m confused: I just saw a trailer for another movie about the parents of a columbine style killer and how they deal with it.

Is this the “in” subject right now?

Did the hollywood big wigs have a pow wow and decided that enough time had passed and thye should all start filming about this at the same time?

What is the appropriate time-distance in hollywood big wig universe? Just enough so that their therer is a semblance of appropriate consideration for the real life victims and their families but not too much so that the issue isn’t irrelevent anymore? How do they figure that out? Do they have an iphone app for that?

    smh
