Prince Harry is probably going back to Afghanistan later this year

harry1

Oooooooh NOOOO! Prince Harry is probably going back to Afghanistan! Good for him, true, because I get the feeling that Harry desperately wants to serve his country yet again. Harry memorably served several months in Afghanistan in 2007-2008, but was yanked out in March 2008 after British and American tabloids leaked it. Harry had been undercover before then. So… I’m not sure why we’re hearing about this now, but I do know that I admire him a great deal for wanting to go back.

Prince Harry will be granted his wish to return to Afghanistan as an Apache attack helicopter pilot after completing his training next year. The Prince, who was hastily withdrawn from a tour of Helmand in 2008 after his position was compromised by foreign media reports, has often expressed the desire to return to the front line.

Now he is set to be granted another tour when his squadron is deployed to Afghanistan next year, by which time he should have completed his Apache pilot training. Clarence House said the Prince would complete his training next year and would then be available for deployment wherever Apaches were needed – including Afghanistan. It is understood that his squadron is being lined up for a return to Afghanistan next year, most likely in late summer.

Rather than serving as a front line junior officer with the Household Cavalry, as he did on his previous tour, Prince Harry will fly a £40 million AH-64 attack helicopter in operations against insurgents. The Prince gained his wings earlier this year and he has been told by flying instructors he has a “natural flair” for flying. He is currently undergoing an eight-month “conversion to role” course to teach him to use the Apache’s weapons in battle. Training a pilot to fly the state-of-the-art helicopters costs £1 million, and only the top one in every 50 pilots is cleared to fly them.

Apaches are two-man helicopters designed to hunt and destroy tanks using their array of weapons, which include rockets and Hellfire missiles. They are worth £35 million each.

The Queen, Prince Charles and Chelsy Davy, Prince Harry’s on-off girlfriend, are said to be anxious about his redeployment, but he is determined to fulfil his duty as a serving officer. But the Prince has frequently expressed his desire to rejoin his comrades in active service.

In a television interview last year he said he had a “real determination” to return to Afghanistan, adding that his “heart was in the Army”. Earlier this year he reiterated his wish while on a charity mission to the North Pole in aid of wounded servicemen. When asked if he still wanted to return to active service, the Prince said: “I severely hope so, and from the military’s point of view I seriously hope so. You know money’s been spent towards your training – God knows how much money’s been spent on us. So from their point of view if I’m not going then I’m taking up someone else’s space.”

A source close to the Prince added in April: “Nothing has changed since he expressed those views … he is fully aware that he is different to his brother but he would still like to do his duty. He is passionate about his military service and unless he publicly comes out and says otherwise, his ambition will remain to serve in Afghanistan.”

A Clarence House spokesman said: “It has always been the prince’s intention to serve operationally wherever the MoD request of him.”

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said: “We do not comment on the deployment of individual service personnel.”

[From The Telegraph]

So if he goes, it will be later this year, and right now it’s looking like he’ll be going with his unit. This is the kind of situation where he could pretty easily pull rank and ask for special treatment as a prince, but I doubt he will. But here’s a question: do you like the idea of Haz flying a $70 million piece of equipment?

OMG it is so wrong for a woman my age to think he looks totally HOT hot hot in the top picture – in all the pictures really. Younger men aren’t my thing (except my hubby is 12 whole weeks younger than I am), but Harry has really come into his own.

  2. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    Hi ladies!! I’mm Baaacccckkk..

I will go in his place.. I dont want anything to hurt this nice royal ginger a$$!!

  3. tiki says:

harry is such an honorable man. he’s a tribute to his upbringing. god bless him.

  4. Anne says:

I find this love for Harry very annoyinng. He is a racist, entitled prick. His racism has been covered several times over the years.

He is s typical posh boy who thinks he can do as he likes and got into military school by cheating and getting his teacher to do his work for him.

As a woman of colour I find him odious.

  5. arock says:

talk about coming into his own. holy ginger hotness batman, hes should be in hot dong friday.
love the pic in the white pants and blazer…*blushing thinking of all the terrible things i would do to him under a tent at ascot….in a hat…

  6. Mari says:

    @JD’s girl Whoohoo!!

God, love him!! Thx for the nip pinch shot!!

  7. GrnMtGirl says:

    Hot!!!

  8. spinner says:

I love Harry. He has really come around nicely. *SWOOOON*

  9. Nat says:

    @ Anne

At last someone who has the same opinion about this racist douchebag!

I really like celebitchy but at the same time – you’re not really fair on some occasions and your Harry-mania is one of these.

I loved it when you bitched about Galliano about his racist opinions but you seem to have forgotten about Harry’s Halloween costume…

  10. SallyJay says:

I saw this on the news here (UK) this morning and actually yelled “noooo!!” at the screen (to the concern of my bf, heh). God I love this kid. And what’s more, I admire him. As you say, he could so easily pull rank but he is determined to serve. I also really appreciate his comment about the cost of training someone for this role, nicely self-aware. @Anne and Nat, please – he was young, stupid, let it go. Check out his work for Sentebale. Hardly the actions of a “racist”. http://www.sentebale.org/home/index.html

  11. nona says:

Pathetic. And even more pathetic are the ones who praise this elitist jerk, member of a murderous system and symbol of Meritocracy at its Worst.

  12. Deb says:

Agree with Sally. He was young and stupid, particularly when partying. His ongoing work in Sentebale and his clear love of its people, particularly the children, do not seem like that of a racist individual.

  13. Mari says:

    @Nat and Anne
It *was* a costume though, wasn’t it? For Halloween, I believe? Aren’t Halloween costumes inherently scary regalia?
Sheesh, so much noise over nothing.

Please take your apoplectic fabricated anti-sementic crap elsewhere. Thanks.

  14. Rita says:

The royals have a great tradition of serving their country in the military. I believe the children of every world leader should enlist in the military and serve side by side with its citizens even in the most dangerous conflicts. It would be a fine example of American patriotism if the Obama children would enlist and join Harry on the frontlines in Afghanistan.

  15. sam says:

He is a credit to his family and his country.

  16. Me says:

My husband will be over there around that time frame then too. I just told him to find Prince Harry and attach himself to his unit! I imagine if anyone is safe there, it will be them. 😉

  17. Stephie says:

Wow he looks yummy in that top photo.

I think it’s quite noble he wants to go back (not William though?) but don’t see how he can do anything really being as high profile as he is.

But since they managed it before, I hope the Brit tabs (or whoever was stupid enough to do so) don’t leak locations amd keep their traps shut.

  18. Amanda says:

Just a little correction, it was an Australian outlet that first leaked his whereabouts.

But you know, this is what he’s been training for and by all accounts, he’s good at what he does. So good for him. I wouldn’t step foot in a place like Afghanistan so I’ve got nothing but respect for the guys and girls over there.

  19. Anne says:

@Mari. Sheesh, please take your ignorant apologistic crap elsewhere you ignorant fool. Your comment is pure stupid. You and HRH would get on famously.

None of what I wrote is fabricated. If you were a member of the groups he has uttered his ‘nothing’ over I think you would feel differently.

He wasn’t young and stupid when he called a collleague ‘paki’ and referred to Afghans as ‘rag heads’.

He only started doing the charity work in Africa when his antics were really getting him a bad name. Using people he wouldn’t give the time of day to make himself look good. It seems to have worked judging by the comments here.

So thanks for the advice people but I won’t be ‘getting over it’.

  20. Iggles says:

Mari – I agree it was a costume.

It was a very stupid choice. Despite all their education, I do think both princes (William was at the same party) were ignorant about how the uniform means a lot more to people than “the guys we (the British) fought against in WWII” and received a well deserved dose of reality of the ugliness that regime symbolized.

I think he’s sincere in humanitarian work his done over the years in Africa and in third worlds countries. His actions lead me to believe that he isn’t racist, but I can’t speak for what’s in his heart. Only Harry knows that.

On a purely shallow level, this woman of color thinks he’s hot so I’m hoping I’m not wrong about him! Lol.

    Edited to say:

Anne – FYI, Harry has been friends with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho for years. That’s not a recent development purely for PR. The two of them founded a non-profit called Sentebale that helps orphans in that country…

  21. yepp says:

wait what costume are you guys talking about? how is he a rascist? i have never heard this before 4!

  22. bluhare says:

@Anne: You points would go much farther without the personal insults.

Harry’s born of a wealthy entitled system, the heart of which IS racist and classist (if that’s a word!), no doubt about it. That being said, it appears that Harry is doing his damndest to be a productive adult, which includes serving his country. It also involves charity work involving children. He gets points for that.

  23. Anne says:

A few years ago my dear Prince turned up at a party dressed as nazi for a ‘joke’ and a few years ago he had to be sent on a course to teach him that people who are not white are not sub-human after making RACIST comments to a colleague.

A black comedian who met dear Harry recounted that Harry told him “you don’t sound like a black chap”. No doubt because he wasn’t greeted with high fives my Stephen Amos.

@bluhare. My repsonse to people depends on how I am addressed by them. Mari was rude and dismissive. I answered in kind.

It’s a pity for Mel Gibson he is no longer seen as cute.

    Prince Harry is a POS.

  24. L says:

@rita Really? You want a 10 year old and a 13 year old to enlist? Maybe in a few years sure-but it’s hard to remember any other recent prez’s kids doing that either (Bush Jr, Clinton, Reagan, Ford, Nixon, Johnson, Kennedy, Truman, Hoover,Coolidge all had kids who didn’t serve either)

@stephie as heir to the throne, the military doesn’t allow william to serve in front line combat. Mostly for security and safety reasons.

  25. Sloane Wyatt says:

Just when I thought Harry couldn’t get any hotter, my panties are melting seeing his sexy ginger peach fuzz!! Yowsa!

Gotta go, a very cold shower has my name on it.

  26. bluhare says:

The only way people learn that their thinking is racist is to be called out on it.

That’s a fact. What we don’t know is what Harry did after he was.

@Sloane Wyatt: How do you know Diana would be disappointed? She was born into that environment as well.

  27. sleepy says:

I’m surprised they are making this public considering what happened the last time. Good luck to him if he goes.

I find Harry’s “cheeky” personality adorable but Harry’s former comments and actions do raise questions for me also, honestly. On top of the Nazi outfit, the “Paki” and “rag head” comments, his on-off girlfriend Chelsy Davy and her family are associated in business with the brutal Zimbabwean dictator Mugabe. That doesn’t help Harry’s reputation either, especially when you put it together with all the other things from his past.

  28. Mare says:

“Serving his country’s economic interests” would be more correct.

  29. Mari says:

@Anne Again, let me reiterate, none of what you said shows he’s racist. Ignorant, I’ll maybe give you, but not racist. The incident you’re referring to is when he called a friend in his unit “Paki”, which was clearly not said derogatorily. You’d realize that if you weren’t so quick to jump on the “Everybody’s a Racist” bandwagon. And, just to further your knowledge, ya know, cause I like helping people, Harry has been GREATLY involved in charities since his 18th birthday because of his late mother’s worldwide contributions, *not* for the reasons you’re alluding. And furthermore, if you should find this message rude or dismissive- good, it’s meant to be. I will gladly stand up to you and your PC Brigade any day of the week so we can actually stop and eradicate TRUE racism. Thanks.

  30. Stacia says:

He’s cute. Hope he does not have dad’s hair genes (like his bro does)or all that lovely ginger hair is going bye bye.

  31. garvels says:

    @Mari-ditto to your comments-good points.

  32. gee says:

OMG MY brother might be there then. They can meet, I can be introduced, and all of a sudden Celebitchy has their royal commenter.

    Something like that.

  33. Sloane Wyatt says:

@ bluhare, @Sloane Wyatt: How do you know Diana would be disappointed? She was born into that environment as well.

Late at night after big fancy dinners in the palace, Diana would secretly take leftover food and hand out blankets to freezing homeless people under bridges. She also secretly sold various items laying about for cash, and frequently went out into the night and handed out the money herself to prostitutes and junkies.

In 1987, when AIDs was thought to be transmitted through touch, Princess Diana held babies dying of AIDS. Privately, she gave one ballet dancer dying of AIDS her phone number so he could call her for support and later spent three nights in a row at his bedside until he died. Even when Di could have contracted deadly disease, she chose to spend time with leprosy patients, stroking their diseased limbs, and giving hugs and cheer freely.

Diana put herself out there, one on one, without any show, to people of all races. She didn’t see color; she saw people’s hearts and her life was a testament. That’s why I know Diana would have been disappointed to hear her son using racist language. From how she lived her life, I also feel sure Diana would have done her level best as a mom to raise her boys not to use hurtful names.

IMO opinion choosing to not say words like f—-t, n word, r—–d, and the like isn’t being PC. It’s being nice.

  34. lucky says:

I think it is pretty clear that the comments ARE racist. Does that make him a racist? I think we all do hurtful, stupid things in our lives (well I know I have) and it is what you do after that which shows your true nature.

Plenty of people use offensive language and then align themselves with charitable organizations and publicly apologize, but does that mean they did mean and and still may not believe it?

All in all he acted like a little, privileged, RACIST, child. That is how he acted, hopefully it isn’t who he is, but I can’t see how anyone in a gossip site would know that for sure.

  35. Sloane Wyatt says:

    Pretty much ditto, @ lucky.

Sl-pe, slanth–d, yep, I’m military and know the jargon that is thrown around to dehumanize the ‘enemy’. However, when coupled with casual ‘light hearted’ shenanigans of dressing like a full on Nazi and calling your mates racial terms, Prince Harry may have been unfortunately modelling after his grandpa, Prince Phillip – who is well known for his casual, yet real, racism.

The Prince still has time to develop into more of, shall we say, a prince.

  36. Poppy says:

Somehow I think this won’t happen, poor Harry I’m sure his heart is with the army but if he was pulled out before because of security worries, what has changed, it will be a hundred times worse now that they know he will be in a helicopter, all helicopters will now become prime al Qaeda targets

Not only that but what if he manages to kill civilian women and children when he is hitting targets, it would be an unfortunate event for the normal anonymous airman/soldier but for Harry it would be hung around his neck like an albatross for the rest of his life.

Sorry Harry but as much as you want to be a normal young soldier it’s never going to happen, in 1911 maybe but in 2011 never.

  37. REALIST says:

Hopefully he will help wrap things up there. Our job, as originally stated, is done, as I assume the job of the Brits is, too.
History demonstrates that no outside power has ever been able to claim victory in Afghanistan. Time to take our marbles and go home.

  38. Anne says:

@Mari. You really are quite sad. What, did some person of colour shove it to you one day and you’ve yet to get over it?

PC Bandwagon is the phrase always trotted out when racists are challenged.

Good ole Prince Harry is lucky to have so many defenders.

@Dingles. No pearl clutchers have questioned Harry’s bravery; I didn’t know being a member of the military gave ignorant people a pass to say what they liked.

Many people in the military would not use the phrase rag-head because they know it is a racist term and plenty of soldiers are aware of the complex situations they are involved in. Don’t tar them all with the same brush.

  39. phaksi says:

Ive heard some of Prince Phillip’s “off colour” comments and I thought they were really funny. “Racist is a word thats thrown around a lot it in South Africa so unless someone goes into a full on rant ala Tracy Morgan Im wary of crying racism. As a woman of colour I would happily overlook the things Harry said and do him 😉

  40. Ummmm.... says:

OMG… How can anyone doubt Charles is the father? Slap some big floppy ears and a brown wig on the header pic and it’s the Prince of Wales :O.

  41. crumbcake says:

@Dingles–good points–thanks for your post & thanks to you and your comrades for risking your butts while the rest of us can flap our lips in outrage while having no clue of the environment & inherent danger the men and women in the military face every day.

Does anyone else remember being young and saying things that were maybe not so politically correct? Stupid statements/actions (like dressing up as a Nazi) that we have learned through the process of maturing and getting older that we now wouldn’t even think, let alone utter? I certainly do.

Prince Harry sure is extremely good looking. I would be REALLY disappointed if he was racist. . . it would be such a turn off.

  42. Dingles says:

@Crumbcake- I’m not in the military, my husband is. 🙂 And he wouldn’t give a f*** what racial slurs some prince uses as long as he does his job when the bullets start flying.

  43. crumbcake says:

@Dingles–thanks to your husband then! And thanks for being a supportive spouse! 🙂

Just for the record, IMHO I think during times of war, we do use words to describe our enemy that when used out of context would seem “racist”, but as Dingles mentioned, those terms are used to describe the portion of the population who is trying to blow us off the face of the earth. I remember reading a paper my dad had written in junior high where he referred to the Japanese people with a slang term that I thought was mean spirited and it made me uncomfortable. I asked my dad about that, and he said “that’s how everyone, including the media, referred to them during WW II –it wasn’t looked upon as racist, even though it would now.”

I think true racism is an ugly thing. . . . . but I don’t think it is as common as some people think. It’s not necessarily the words that people use when they are joking around with friends (like Harry calling his pal a rag-head in a joking way).
To me, racism is pure hatred towards another person who is different just because he/she was born with a different skin color or culture than they are. I think many people are perhaps a bit overly sensitive and get ignorance or crass humor confused with racism. To me, there is a difference.

  44. Lucretias says:

    @Mari @crumbcake

I think racism is such a politically charged topic that people often shy away from naming/stating an action as racist. I taught individual and cultural diversity to graduate students intent on becoming psychologists and the level of discomfort around the topic of cultural diversity always saddened me.
I think we all want to think the best about people, but as Jung “Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darknesses of other people.”
Is Harry a racist maybe/maybe not. Did he engage in racist behaviors? I would say yes. Are his behaviors mitigated by youth, environment, other charitable actions. I think were head into moral relativism.
All I can say, is I say is given Harry’s background (elitist family with a racist grandfather) I am giving him the side-eye. yes, his mother was a woman known for her charity, but she passed away when he was 10.
I will say people are a mixed bag and we all have the potential for bad things and if people are apologists/condoning of our behavior the motivation/desire to change lessens.

I want to add I currently work with homeless veterans who served their country. Some in wartime some not, they are definitely a mixed bag. Yes, they served their country, but some also molested children, stole, abused drugs and alcohol and have made derogatory comments about other races and sexual orientations.

  45. jover says:

Thank you dingles comfortable people that are protected from fascists that cut people’s heads off in public can’t admit as George Orwell famously said the soldier is despised by the very people whose income he safeguards. Mare what specific economic interests are being defended in Afghanistan. National Geographic last winter had a wonderful underread article on the opportunities women are getting now that the Taliban have been pushed out. If we summarily walk out as isolationists in both parties apparently want us the fate of these women will not be pleasant. This is one of the many consequences that are being evaded by our politicos. Finally, bravo to harry for serving in any capacity; more in our country need to do the same. and damn PC bullshit.

  46. SallyJay says:

@Anne – wow. You’re rather unpleasant. There is truly no need to get personal.

@Crumbcake, @Lucretria – thank you for your thoughtful commentary.

  47. Anne says:

@Sallyjay. That’s some real selective reading you’ve done.

  48. Anonymous says:

Christ, kids. Donning a nazi uniform for fun can mean two things: you’re a racist or have an incredibly strange and insensitive sense of humor. I don’t consider myself racist, but frankly, I wouldn’t mind donning a nazi uniform for shits and giggles, either. And I’m part Roma.

  49. Mari says:

@Anne Racism still exists, obviously, as I have experienced it many times throughout my life. You can choose to throw the word around carelessly if you’d like, but it only clouds the real issues. What I will defend, though, is my right and others to not live in fear because of slanderous people like you spouting “Racist!” every chance you get. It’s becoming difficult to see and solve the real issues with race through the mud you’re carelessly slinging. I’m not hurt or even offended that you insinuated I’m a racist simply because I used the term “PC Bandwagon”; it only proves my point. More holstering and more critical thinking is what I’d prescribe to you. If you come in, guns blazing, every time someone challenges you, soon you’re going to run out of bullets, surrounded by the wounded innocents caught in your crossfire. If you’re okay with that on your conscience, then fine, but I enjoy sleeping peacefully at night. With that, I will leave this topic, as I never intended to go into such a heavy conversation in the first place, and actually enjoy my Friday.

  50. Anne says:

@jMari. That was a wonderful piece you finished on. You really are clueless. Enjoy your Friday.

  51. Carolyn says:

“Hot Harry in a Helicopter”. Awesome. Um..considering he is the spare to the King…why is this being so publicised so widely? Doesn’t that compromise his safety?
