Amy Winehouse cancels dates on her tour after drunken “itchy arms” performance

Amy tries to sing at 1:20

Amy Winehouse was too wasted to remember the words to her song during a performance in Belgrade over the weekend. In a video of the show, (above) Amy rubs her nose and arms, sways back and forth awkwardly and mumbles as she tries to fake her way through “Just Friends.” At times she seemed distracted by her arms, rubbing them and looking down with glazed eyes before she remembers that she’s supposed to be performing. This was supposed to be the first of 12 European shows for Amy, but because she was too out of it to even complete one gig her next two have been canceled. The last we heard from Amy she was in rehab, but she left after just a week there.

Amy Winehouse, attempting to perform while appearing to be under the influence, was booed off the stage in Belgrade on Saturday night after she arrived on stage an hour late, then stumbled around and slurred the words to her 2008 song “Just Friends.”

She greeted the crowd of 20,000 by shouting, “Hello, Athens,” reports the U.K.’s Telegraph newspaper.

Following the incident, Winehouse, 27, apologized to fans and canceled Monday’s scheduled performance in Istanbul and Wednesday’s in Athens, say reports.

Late last month, Winehouse checked into rehab for her ongoing problem with drugs and alcohol, the singer’s rep confirmed to PEOPLE. The treatment was seen as preparation for this tour.

In a statement following the Belgrade incident, Winehouse’s management said: “Despite feeling sure that she wanted to fulfill these commitments, she has agreed with management that she cannot perform to the best of her ability and will return home. … She would like to apologize to fans expecting to see her at the shows but feels that this is the right thing to do.”

Her next show is scheduled for Friday, July 8, in Spain.

So Amy has a whole two and a half weeks to get it together. Considering that she hasn’t been able to do that in several years, that’s not likely to happen. The best we can hope for is to her to stay semi-sober enough to sing and remember the words. Maybe her record company should just send her back to St. Lucia and forget about trying to have her tour. She wasn’t quite sober in the Caribbean but she seemed to be keeping it together and it didn’t seem like she was going to go the way of so many other talented musicians. She turns 28 on September 14. I hope it’s not callous to say that I really hope she makes it.

It would be ironic if she forgot the words to her “Rehab” song.

  2. Chris says:

And some say Gaga is really a man. 🙁

  3. the original bellaluna says:

Wow. Ordinarily, I would have some snarky comment about that “performance” but that just made me uncomfortable. I couldn’t even watch past the 1:30 mark. How awful to be such a mess! I actually feel kind of sorry for her.

    *waves @ brin*

  4. Kloops says:

Oh my. That was too sad. I don’t even understand how her body keeps going.

  5. Helen says:

So very sad. This woman has more talent in her middle finger than most “pop stars” of today, and here she is pissing it all away. A crying shame.

Had tickets for her show, I was planning on going to see her. Even if she does make it until August, I won’t go to see her perform unless she’s at the top of her game.

    Fuck, such a shame! 🙁

  6. the original bellaluna says:

Let us hope that Adele does not go down this path, what with those asshole execs telling her to lose weight. Because I LOVE her. (I loved Amy too, for her voice & talent. Now I’m just sad for her.)

  7. Stacia says:

    H.A.M….that is all.

  8. luls says:

oh shit. i couldnt watch past 1.35.

whats with all the fiddling around on stage, putting her shoes on and off!? not to mention the disappearance of her voice. seriously… wow. this is so depressing.

somebody needs to sober her up for just 24 hours and take her along to 1 of Angelina’s UNHCR missions so she can wake up and realize HOW fortunate HER life is in comparison and that shes willingly crapping it all away…

    so sad 🙁

  9. Anonymous says:

god, she was so FIERCE, too… this clip made me sad.
when people are this far gone, do they come back? i really liked her.

  10. LindaR says:

What an ass. I hate drug addicts. Don’t give that addiction shit. They prefer to be that way because they chose to become that way. And they could choose not to do it anymore. She wasted people’s time and money. Get off the stage you narcissistic twit.

  11. Julie says:

@ LindaR, you are just completely ignorant but I’m sure you already know that. I hope that Amy can find a way to overcome this horrendous struggle. It’s just no way to have to live and a shame waste of what could be a good life.

  12. dorothy says:

I honestly can’t believe she’s lived THIS long. Her bodys a wreck, she looks tired and worn out. Just look at her photos from early in her career. She needs to just give it up, go back to rehab, lie low and recover. Maybe in a year or so try again. Very, very sad. She’s a prime example of what drugs can do to a person.

  13. Blue says:

I was uncomfortable watching that vid, made it to 1:36 then had to turn it off. I hate people with talent throwing it away. Giving way to useless auto-tuned assholes who couldn’t carry a tune with a bucket. This girl is seriously damaged & I don’t know how she’s still functioning(barely)

  14. George 85 v says:

Boy,I bet her daddy is proud of her.

  15. Tiffany says:

She is such a sad wreck of a person.

Pick up Eliza Doolittle’s “Pack Up”, and get the feel of Amy without the depression and booze.

  16. justathought says:

only an idiot would buy her concert tickets…I’d rather clean toilets than pay money to listen to that off key wasted marketed melt down sad junkie.
    .

  17. malachais says:

I had to stop the vid as well. Why didn’t anyone backstage notice how wasted she was? She can’t even form a sentence. IDK, but she looked like she was on some heavy pills or crack. Sad, but Amy has set this expectation. I still wait for the day when she is able to sing again.

  18. bluhare says:

@LindaR: Never mind. A reply would be wasted on you.

  19. artichoke says:

@LindaR you obviously have no idea how addiction or recovery works. i hope no one close to you ever needs help, they would definitely fail with a support system like you.
i hope amy is someday able to recover. when she is sober she is a very gifted woman.

  20. gee says:

How is it ok to pimp out this drug addict? Something is so wrong with her handlers. She makes Linnocent look like Venus.

  21. Yasmine says:

I feel like a jerk because that was sad/pathetic but it still cracked me up. @ the 4:26 mark she’s like: oh yeah, the end is coming up, so I’ll just say juuuuust frieeeeends.

  22. tooey says:

@gee – my thoughts exactly. Why is it ok to keep pushing this poor creature onstage so someone can make money off of her? She clearly isn’t in any condition to “entertain” us. I always kind of think the same thing about Britney Spears; her eyes still look dead/drugged to me but she’s out there gyrating, dry humping and flashing her chonies so daddy can make a dollar. Kinda gross.

  23. Ally says:

She’s got that amazing Keith Richards type of genetics, I guess, where you can keep wrecking your body with poisonous chemical allsorts, and still keep going (though not singing, evidently).

    Those two should be studied.

  24. original kate says:

so sad. but i would rather listen to winheouse sing on her worst day than goopy on her best.

speaking of music, can we have an RIP for mr. clarence clemons?

  25. Eleonor says:

Well Keith Richards, even during the worst period of his drug addiction was able to go on stage, write great songs, and record great albums,at a certain point he was strong enough to clean himself and get sober. That’s why he is still alive. We can’t yet know if Amy Whineouse will ever be able to get sober.

  26. Bubbling says:

Hey guys, I live here, and this was beyond tragic, people booed her way from the stage, she couldn’t stand to save her life, lyrics were all messed up…People were so disappointed and the tickets were rather pricey. Moby saved the day.
I feel so sorry for her

  27. Abby says:

I couldn’t even watch. This makes me so sad. How has she even survived this long?

  28. Bill Hicks is God says:

She is a very gifted and a very troubled young woman. I hope like hell she overcomes this. Alcohol addiction is chronic, progressive and ultimately fatal.

@LindaR: What a mean and spiteful comment. How’s the air up there in the superioursphere?

  29. 4Real says:

Oooo LOOK SHE “GOT THAT JUNKIE ITCH”!

  30. Ja says:

Sad sad sad. I was thinking about going to Belgrade to that concert. Having not seen her all over the press for a while made me forget it’s always a 50/50 with her. Nevertheless, I’d rather do without her at the Sziget festival this summer too if that meant she finally pulled through her addiction hell.

  31. gimpy says:

I’m not surprised at all. Amy wasn’t this wasted in Dubai in February when I saw her but she was also booed by thousands at this concert which cost up to 1,000dhs

She seemed annoyed to be expected to sing, played with her hair and checked her fingernails intently while messing up the tempo and key in every single one of her songs.

She even took off from the stage for over an hour at one point and her backup dancer had to get up and sing to the crowd to fill the gap because they were getting so angry.

I guess we should have seen the writing on the wall when we heard she was in hospital for “pneumonia” a few weeks earlier.

  32. california angel says:

First of all, this is so sad: ( It’s even more sad that Winehouse had more talent in her yellow crack fingers than Lady Gaga will ever have, ever!

BTW! About 95% of people utilize some form of drug or mind-enhancing substance so I guess that makes LindaR the belle of the hater’s ball.

  33. LindaR says:

She’s an idiot. All you enablers line up and help her. See where it gets you.

  34. Shy says:

I can’t believe at people who buy tickets to her show. What is wrong with them?

  35. original kate says:

@ lindar: just who on this thread is enabling her? and why are you so bitter? jeebus.

  36. Emily says:

She’s 27? I had no idea, she looks so much older! Yeah, I’d say her days are numbered in that case. I’d say the same for Linnocent if she was a musician without quotation marks.

  37. elvisgrace says:

Isn’t itchiness a side effect of narcotics use?

  38. Nat says:

It’s really interesting to read this post and these comments given what’s happened. Once again I find myself thinking that if only someone had taken the tough love road with her things may have been different. Addicts are master manipulators and people that coddle them and feel bad for them just feed into their self destruction. Someone close to her should have formed a conservatorship, taken all of her money, done some sort of mental health intervention and locked her up to detox.
