Since her passport was taken away after the THIRD time she tried to escape her wedding, Charlene Wittstock now finds herself Her Serene Highness, Princess Charlene of Monaco, forced to spend her honeymoon awaiting the paternity test on what will likely be her new husband’s third illegitimate child (that we know of), conceived during Charlene and Albert’s relationship. So Albert took Charlene to her home country, South Africa, for their honeymoon, almost like he’s tempting fate that she will again try to pull a runner, this time into the arms of her countrymen. Instead of spending their honeymoon enjoying each other, Charlene and Albert have done a series of public events, and Charlene has worn black for nearly everything, almost like she’s trying to signal that she’s in mourning. Unfortunately, we don’t have any photos from the honeymoon – you can see some here. She still looks pretty sad. And we got a tip from a South African news agency – their sources claim that Charlene and Albert aren’t even sleeping in the same room. Scratch that – they aren’t even staying in the same hotel!
It was supposed to be their fairytale honeymoon in Africa, but Princess Charlene slept alone in a bedroom 16km from her prince.
Charlene Wittstock, now Princess Charlene of Monaco, arrived in Durban this week with Prince Albert to host a wedding reception for South African friends and dignitaries who could not make it to Monaco. The reception was at the swanky Oyster Box Hotel in Umhlanga Rocks, north of Durban.
It was widely reported that the royal couple would be staying in the presidential suite, at R25 000 per night. However, it has been confirmed by hotel spokesperson Joanne Hayes that Princess Charlene stayed in the Buthelezi suite (R10 600 per night).
Prince Albert stayed at the Hilton Hotel in Durban. This royal marriage has seemed doomed from the start. Shortly before the wedding last week, reports surfaced that Charlene had tried three times to flee the principality and return to South Africa.
The couple attended a meeting of the International Olympic Committee in Durban and on Thursday night hosted a gala ceremony to celebrate their nuptials. However, when they met President Jacob Zuma they arrived in the same car but left in two separate vehicles. At Zuma’s residence, they met with the president for 30 minutes and then reappeared for pictures. Zuma jokingly told Prince Albert he had not paid lobola, and said while he could not attend the wedding, the private meeting had more than made up for it.
When photographers urged the royal couple to kiss, it was another of those awkward moments – Charlene turned her head away and Prince Albert ended up giving her a peck on the cheek.
Pictures of Charlene taken this week showed an unhappy woman who rarely smiled. The only time she showed real delight was when Archbishop Desmond Tutu hugged her. Charlene and Albert cut short their South African stay on Friday, citing urgent business in Monaco as their reason.

They left separately, probably because they were going to different locations afterwards – Charlene was going back to her hotel to weep and self-medicate, while Albert went back to the Hilton to find more women to impregnate. Seriously, poor Charlene. I’m surprised she didn’t fall into Desmond Tutu’s arms and refuse to let go until he helped her get out of her marriage. Desmond would have too! He’s so lovely.

Wait. That is so misleading. I read an earlier article that said they left separately because he was attending another Olympic event while she was driving to another town to attend some charity thing. I think it’s crazy that he has scheduled work events during the honeymoon and she is doing any sort of charity work. And if the report is true that they are staying in separate rooms in separate hotels in the same city … that’s just awful.
I suppose they had no choice but to make the honeymoon more of a PR tour — I don’t think Charlene is eager to spend loads of private time with her dickhead hubby.
It’s too bad she didn’t make a break for it in Paris (girl kept getting talked into returning). Now that she’s married, it’ll be twice as hard to escape, unless she can call on the Pope to lay down some serious law on Albert and get the marriage annulled (the Grimaldis position themselves as uber-Catholic, if not always, um, practicing ones). Since she’s no longer a South African national, I don’t know how her home country can help. Besides, they need to await the test results. Poor girl. Quelle disastre!

(And it wouldn’t surprise me one little bit to discover he’s “holding” her passport for her while they’re abroad.)

@ teehee – Because his OTHER children she already knew about; now there’s rumours of 1 or 2 more. And 1 of those is said to be a baby, which means it happened while they were together and he cheated on her.
I don’t understand how she didn’t know what she was getting into by being with him at all. It’s not like he has been very discreet over the years. I hope it wasn’t one of those pathetic ‘But -I- will be the one to change him!’ notions.
One thing to remember is how much time and work it takes to be an Olympic swimmer (duh). Charlene probably didn’t have much of a young adulthood because she was always in the pool, traveling and competing. So she might have missed out on that time where we date around, or get married, and discover that a good man or woman is hard to find. I really think he might have had her fooled into thinking he was changed, that her beauty, accomplishments and magic vadge were all he were all he needed to settle down. Men trick “normal” people all the time, so why not Crown Prince Sociopath? The only difference is, she can’t leave.

He should have married one of the 2 or 3 women he has a child with, legitimizing them for succession. Instead of this fright of a woman. No sympathy for her. She got what she played for, and now is making everyone pay for it. Man up already!

I agree with The Original Bellaluna. It’s one thing to know your future hubby has kids from previous relationships. It’s quite another to find out he has not 1, but 2 while he’s engaged to you. She was well within her rights to want out. Too bad he’s the head of state & could have her passport taken from her. And it’s obvious her family wasn’t going to help out since they felt they won the World Cup.
Charlene and he probably had an agreement that he would either (a) be faithful to her, or (b) not do anything to humiliate her. I think having an Italian mistress ready to tell all qualifies for (b). Although I don’t know. Maybe she’s just a spoilt brat, but looking at her, I don’t think so.
In the close up, her sinuses are swollen as are underneath her eyes. She’s made up beautifully, but you can’t hide what’s underneath.

Possibly having two more children while they were engaged probably pissed her off and that’s when she tried to get out of it but was unsuccessful because that royal family in Monaco are a bunch of really shady characters and Prince Albert is the worst.
Of course this is all speculation. Based on her face in the last week, I’d say she’s pretty miserable and staying in a different hotel seems like the best for both of them.

from the photos i’ve seen of this trip, she looks much happier when she’s at home. she’s cracked a few genuine looking smiles, and really seemed to enjoy the people she was meeting.

The storyline sure seems peculiar in this day and age, but I think the body language says it all. Their kisses are AWKWARD to say the least.
Marrying for money – sure, lots of women do it (HELLO Basketball Wives). But there seems to be something more here – contract to bear children or whatever it may be. The Vogue article clearly spelled out that she was installed in a Monaco apartment, all alone, not speaking French. Why? What’s going on here?
And the last thing I’ll mention – which I know others have mentioned, but it’s still striking) is that Albert keeps fathering illegitimate children!!! Why would someone in his position risk that embarrassment?

@Sapphire I was originally sketchy about these stories too. However, body language does not lie. Charlene’s eyes, face tell us all she is not happy. None of us know what the whole story is but it’s in her face doesn’t lie. No one can mess up body language that badly. It’s hard to say what the real story is. I don’t want to believe that Albert is a sociopath, just a playboy who is settling down because he has to. I don’t want to believe that Charlene married him only for money. It’s hard to say what the truth is, however this was any marriage made out of love. That’s for sure.
How can they get away with stealing her passport?! That’s a human rights violation, and imprisoning her when she committed no crime! I’m flabbergasted.

I don’t see any of this unhappiness in the photos shown. I’ve seen a couple in the papers where she has a look of disgust, maybe? She has a weird mouth so it’s hard to say. Most of her pictures smiling look genuine from my POV.

Give this poor couple a break! There is now speculation and lies about speculation and lies. Why are people so nasty to them? Could it be plain old jealousy? The media has gone into overdrive publishing negative reports about the wedding and their relationship. I think Charlene was the most beautiful bride ever and wish her and the prince every good thing for the future. Whatever goes on behind closed doors in their life is their own private matters to deal with.

She decided to marry a Royal who’s a billionaire and her parents openly said the family feels like winning the lottery. She knew about hs previous kids and if she would have wanted to bolt all she had to do was not sign the papers in the courthouse, or even better- if she really had been held captive she could have alerted the world by saying NO in church- in front of millions of people. The stories about her being held captive are silly silly silly. Don’t believe that. She may have found out about the additional children and may be giving him the cold shoulder for a while, but there are far worse men to marry than Albert so quit feeling sorry for her. She just had a princess wedding and now a honeymoon in her home country. How about a little smile for the world? Princes don’t come without baggage. She waited long enough for him to marry her. She also had tons of procedures (padded out those lips and Botox)before the wedding- no one who is trying to flee does stuff like that.
Sorry but even marrying the richest man in the world does not necessarily bring happiness. I’ve certainly read about plenty of unhappy rich people (Heather Mills McCartney, Lindsay Lohan, Charlie Sheen, to name but a few.) I happen to feel that Charlene deserves happiness too, and if she’s miserable about Albert’s cheating and possible child born out of wedlock, she has every right to have a long face and do something about if, if she so wishes. I don’t feel that having more things than you or I precludes her from feeling badly or deserving sympathy.
