New ‘Hunger Games’ stills feature Katniss & Gale in the woods, Peeta at the bakery

Lionsgate has released some new movie stills from the set of The Hunger Games, which show Liam Hemsworth as Gale, Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta. These stills have already premiered in the most recent issue of EW, which is the lucky publication who has received a jump start on all of the new imagery for this movie. Initially, EW debuted sneak peeks at Lawrence as Katniss as well as the extremely airbrushed boys, and now we’re catching a glimpse of Katniss and Gale during their hunting time in the woods outside of District 12. Next up, here’s Peeta outside the bakery with that fateful loaf of burned bread. Wasn’t Peeta supposed to be younger during that part of the book? Ah well.

According to IMDb, The Hunger Games is still currently filming and has a release date of March 23, 2012. In other words, there are many months left for Lionsgate to tease the living hell out of the fans with stuff like the cool (or, by some accounts, annoying) motion poster of a burning mockingjay pin. In the meantime, you can check out the film’s official website or its Facebook page. Hopefully, we’ll soon get to see some Cinna; that is, magic of the Lenny Kravitz sex appeal. I’ll be waiting.

    sooo excited!

  2. mln76 says:

I hope the hunting scene doesn’t really look that well lit and ‘nice’ how come Peeta who was supposed to be a rich boy looks dirtier than Katniss and Gale in the woods hunting squirrels for dinner?

  3. Tigger says:

Love it! Jennifer Lawrence looks amazing as Katniss!

  4. Kas says:

I hate how ‘cleaned up’ and ‘trendy’ they look – they were supposed to be impoverished and starving. Anyway I’m going to try not to judge and wait the finished product.
I think Lawrence will make a great Katniss.

  5. Esmom says:

I’m loving JL as Katniss, too, although I was initially hoping for Hailee Steinfeld in the role. But I agree that she and Gale look way too nice in the shot. She never would have had boots and a coat like that, they would have long been bartered away in that black market shop! 🙂

And yes the “burned bread” incident happened when they were kids. Maybe in this shot he is remembering that time or something!

  6. George says:

Lawrence is a severely overrated actress.

they look way too clean and well fed.

    Sucks!

  7. Jenn WInd says:

I guess they filmed the Burned Bread scenes earlier in the movie filming, since she flashes back to later in the book.

I am so excited about this movie, I can not wait until May!!! They better not mess it up!!

  8. niagirl says:

It looks very whitewashed and the two leads actors look nothing like the characters from the book. I’ve had enough of these books being brought too life and it doesn’t look nor sound like the book.

  9. xxodettexx says:

i will watch this movie and no amount of fan-bitching is going to dissuade me… id like to think the storyline is an amazing one and that alone will help me overlook little things like “how clean” katniss/gale look hunting compared to peeta at the bakery [who here thinks its “clean” work to work in a bakery?]

  10. lexi says:

if you guys are going change the hunger games release date please do your research. i see nothing of the sort. if you got it from imbd it says last updated MAY 18, 2011 the release date is still MARCH 23, 2012 jeez

  11. gee says:

@mln: He’s not supposed to be rich, just better off than those on the seam. They lived off the burnt bread.

  12. Hooblie says:

they do look really clean… but I think Katniss wore her dads hunting jacket right?

  13. Devon says:

I thought the release date was March 23, 2012. At least that’s what it says on the Hunger Games official FB page.

I was so nervous about Liam as Gale but that photo makes me feel better. Yeah, it’s glammed up a bit and they don’t look quite right but the lighting could be off or hitting them wrong so they don’t look like they have olive skin? Peeta was suppose to be 11 (I think) when the burned bread scene happens so I have no clue what the hell is going on here. Still not liking Josh as Peeta but I’m willing to wait and see.

  14. T.C. says:

Actually they are NOT doing the bread scenes as children. According to EW, it’s when they are grown which kills that scene for me. Josh H. kills Peeta for me period. That Gale and Katniss hunting scene looks like two rich kids with their leather and good clothes playing “hunter”. Trying not to judge too soon but these pictures are killing my buzz (especially the bad one of the two boys on the EW cover). I do like the Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss cover though, it’s the only thing giving me hope.

  15. Scarlet Vixen says:

I believe that the burned bread scene is done as a flashback. Maybe not back to when they were 11, but still as a flashback.

And Suzanne Collins (the author) was the one who chose Josh Hutcherson for the role of Peeta. She even said something like even if he’d been 7ft tall and purple with wings she still would’ve wanted him because he just slayed his audition. If his casting is okay with the woman who created the character, I don’t know why anybody’s bitching about his being cast. smh

  16. lola says:

I”m sure it will all work out, although peeta looking like a dead ringer of James Cagney is still very disturbing. I’m almost wishing this had been animated in a really cool way now. I almost feel to get the right look, you would have to starve everyone and make them sickly, which isn’t cool. lol

  17. T.C. says:

@Scarlet Vixen we are fans, we have the right to complain. It’s my money that goes to the books and will be my money going to the movies. Josh is too short (5’7″), unattractive, lacks the blonde hair and blue-eyes of Peeta. HE looks like a troll. Notice the only show pictures of Katniss and Gale? A picture of Josh and Jennifer will look like two siblings. The author of the book is going to say nice things about the entire cast. What else do you expect her to say. She only has a small role in casting and she is going to make lots of money if the movie takes off because people will buy more books.

Besides they said they were going to bleach his hair and get him blue contacts when fans complained. So far his hair is barely blonde and there are no blue contacts to be seen. It was a bad casting and they have to continue supporting it.

  18. Rachael says:

“Next up, here’s Peeta outside the bakery with that fateful loaf of burned bread. Wasn’t Peeta supposed to be younger during that part of the book? Ah well.”

That’s what I thought!! I mean we are definitely correct, because I remember the book said that happened when they were like 11!! Hmmmm very strange. Maybe we’re missing something in terms of what’s actually happening in this picture? Maybe it’s actually a pic from present day? But the burned bread … and I think the EW article specifically mentions Josh and Jennifer being the actors in that flashback scene, which makes no sense. Errgh.

But either way, I do think this bakery scenery looks really cool. Though in the pic of the hunting scene with Gale and Katniss, Katniss’ outfit looks way too nice.

  19. Rachael says:

One other thought on the arguments about Josh as Peeta – I really don’t think we should be focusing so much on getting the exact hair and eye colors right for all the characters. What matters much more is that they get the right ACTORS in the roles to play the characters themselves. I’d much rather have a great actor with the wrong look than someone with the exact right physical attributes, but who doesn’t play the part as well.

I can’t say for sure if Josh is a great actor because I’ve only ever seen him in The Kids are All Right, but right now all I have to go on is the fact that Suzanne Collins said that he was so perfect for the role that she would have cast him no matter what he looked like.

I have to admit to being a bit weirded out that he is so short LOL, but I’m sure they’ll do some tricks to make him look a little taller, like making him stand on stuff. And it goes back to not focusing too hard on the physical attributes. Besides, I don’t think Peeta is supposed to be real tall anyway (I just don’t want him to look like a midget compared to Katniss). 😉

  20. Rachael says:

Oh sorry one other thing about Josh being unattractive – First off, I don’t think he’s unattractive, I think he’s nice looking. But that’s subjective. The more important point is … I don’t recall the books ever calling Peeta out as having model good looks or anything. Do they? They call that out very specifically about Gale, but I don’t recall the books ever talking about Peeta as being a physical dreamboat. They mention him as being strong (I always pictured stocky like a wrestler), and my impression from the books is that he’s probably pretty decent-looking, but not the type who is going to become a male model or anything. Maybe I’m forgetting something.

  21. LittleDeadGirl says:

Honestly, I didn’t expect a gritty movie. The books are gritty but they are young adult fiction made into a movie and everyone should have expected them to be glossy and Twilighty. Am I a little dissapointed? Yeah. Surprised? Not really. I’m hoping for a nice enough movie but not gonna get super excited or hold my breath for it to have the feel of the books.

  22. tara says:

my problem with josh isn’t that he isn’t a good actor, I think he is. It’s not even his look per se. But part of what makes peeta is that his appearance informs his character. He looks like a boxer, like a bouncer, or something, a roughneck. lol And he’s suppossed to healthier, a bit more shaped, but still have a vulnerability to him. And that’s missing with the physicality of josh’s appearance.

  23. mln76 says:

@gee yeah but the point is that he’s supposed to be better off than Gale and Katniss yet they look really clean and have nice clothes while he is dirty and looks starving. It doesn’t work. I hope those were just stills for EW and not actually what they wear in their hunting scenes.

  24. Anne de Vries says:

Man, I hope that the wardrobe/fabric distresser just hasn’t arrived on the production yet. Everything they’re wearing looks like it’s come straight out of a shop. Where are the good old days of dragging wardrobe pieces behind a car, hanging them in the sun and sandpapering them until they look properly lived in? That photo looks like an ad for a clothes brand that aims at the eco warrior look..

  25. This could be the proper weblog for everyone who is really wants to find out about this topic.
