Jay-Z tipped $50,000 on a $250,000 bar tab in Miami

fp_7190631_ang_beyoncejayz_lunch_14_19

I can’t imagine paying $250,000 for anything, let alone blowing that amount in one night… on beverages. But I’m not Jay-Z. I can’t imagine spending 250 grand on beverages, and then adding a 20% gratuity on top of it. But I’m not Jay-Z. At first I was like, “Damn, the wait staff got $50,000!” But when you actually do the math, a 20% gratuity is pretty standard for moderate-to-good service, in my opinion. If I get excellent service, I tip 30% or higher. I guess Jay-Z was just content, not overwhelmed, with the service he got in Miami:

Jay-Z is big pimpin’ and spendin’ his G’s!

The rapper and hip hop mogul partied at a Miami nightclub on Sunday night in celebration of his new album with Kanye West, Watch The Throne, and RadarOnline.com has confirmed he dropped a whopping $250,000 on champagne.

“Jay knew that Mark Cuban spent over $100,000 after the Mavs won the championship a few months ago, and he wasn’t about to be upstaged,” a source close to Jay-Z told RadarOnline.com.

“He bought bottle after bottle of Ace of Spades and then went all out with the 15-liter bottle that cost $100,000 on its own!”

According to a source close to the Liv nightclub in the Fontainebleau Hotel, Beyonce’s 41-year-old husband tipped a generous $50,000 to the waitstaff at the end of the night.

Jay-Z and Kanye’s new album has already garnered criticism for lyrics bragging about their wealth — so do you think spending a quarter million dollars on one night out was a good idea?

[From Radar]

On one level, I think “Meh, it’s their money, and this is probably better trickle-down economics than some of the crap rich people blow their money on.” On another level, yeah, it’s kind of offensive. Not really just at Jay, though. I can’t believe that there’s a bottle of champagne that goes for $100,000, and that people order it often enough that the Miami nightclub has it on hand. Like, it’s not a special order. Jay snapped his fingers and a bottle worth $100,000 appeared. What would you do with $100,000? What would you do if you were a waiter and you were tipped 50 grand? The mind boggles.

Also: since there’s no mention of Beyonce, I’m assuming she wasn’t in Miami for this incident. Yet another evening that Jay spent partying with randoms…? Hm.

UPDATE: Page Six has more – Beyonce wasn’t there, neither was Kanye, so it was just Jay and lots of liquored up girls.

  1. dholmas says:

That is ridiculous and gauche. I could think of much better ways to celebrate as in helping the people that need the money. He may as well just burn the money.

  2. BB says:

Ridiculous? Maybe. But hey, if they pay their taxes and keep pouring money into the economy, I am not offended. Also good on him about the tip. I am sure the waiting staff weren’t offended either…

ETA: Why do people always expect richer folk to just spend all their money on charity? Sure it’s easy for me to say “he could have donated that 100,000” but how would you like it everytime you buy any luxury, even if it’s a new handbag or a dress, if someone said “you could have donated that 100 bucks”?

  3. Parisienne says:

so what, this man earned his money, let him spend it the way he wants to.

  4. tapioca says:

@Parisienne: On principle I agree with you, but then I remembered that he’s a crack dealer who makes misogynist rap music ripping off sampling other artists, so I’d query use of the word “earned”!

But yeah, cocktail waitresses, yacht builders, furriers and purveyors of “bling” need steady employment too.

  5. i.want.shoes says:

He may have all that money but he still is one ugly dude.

  6. Lauren says:

yeah like you said, $50000 is just 20%, so at least he didn’t stiff the waitstaff?

  7. LisaMarie says:

Yeah, I’m thinking it’s awesome that he actually paid the tab. How many celebs don’t pull the “I’m not paying, don’t you know who I am?” routine?

  8. Samigirl says:

I used to wait tables, and the highest I ever got was a $350 tip…SO…I think it’s awesome 🙂

  9. Pyewacket says:

It’s his money and he can do what he wants, but that doesn’t mean he should.

If you are going to do that, at least try to be a tad discreet about it.

I guess people equate spending gross amounts of money with having class, when it means the exact opposite.

  10. Maripily says:

I’d be extremely horrified at that amount of spending if it were just some random night at a bar. But since he was celebrating an album release…I’ll just say I’m mildly disgusted. He’s ugly on the inside and out.

  11. gee says:

Do you think the resturant took a cut of it? I feel like there is no way the waiter/waitress could get to be so lucky. Right?

  12. Juju says:

It must be nice to be able to blow $250k on drinks!.

I always tip 20% too which is what he did. So that is good.

  13. Cherry Rose says:

Well, at least he tipped. There’s some celebrities who either give a really small tip, or don’t tip at all.

Like LisaMarie said, there’s a lot of celebrities who try to get everything comped so they don’t have to pay (which means they probably don’t tip either).

I’m quite sure if I was the waitress that Jay Z tipped, I definitely wouldn’t be complaining.

  14. Bubbling says:

Jesus my education per year is 1% of a bottle of campaign

  15. Liz says:

Yes, his fortune and his spending are tawdry and superfluous but at least the waitstaff there will be better off for a little while…

  16. tripmom says:

Certainly it’s his money and he’s entitled to do whatever he wants with it, but I feel like he needs to have a serious chat with MC Hammer. The rich do not stay rich by dropping a quarter of a million dollars in one evening. I am going to laugh my ass off when he’s broke and doing infomercials.

  17. madpoe says:

$100k could help my DH and I with IVF! Fug the bubbley! Even 1/2 of that could help! pfft

  18. the original bellaluna says:

    Because he can. That’s why.

At least it’s not a story about how he verbally abused the wait-staff and/or stiffed them. I hate when people who have money think they can push around the “little people.”

When I waitressed, I worked at the Officer’s Club on the base when I was a teen. I had a nasty group of officers one night who were horrible to me. (All-you-can-eat something or other night really brought in the crowds, and we were SLAMMED!) When they left, they left me 60 CENTS in their USED ASHTRAY.

I followed them to the front desk (where bills were paid), took one particularly obnoxious officer’s hand, dumped ALL the contents of the ashtray into and said “Keep it. You need it more than I do.” and walked away.

And no, I didn’t get fired. (BTW, I am an Officer’s daughter.)

  19. ladybert62 says:

I think this type of extravagence is disgusting. $250,000 on champagne – what a gigantic waste of money.

  20. WillyNilly says:

THIS is what’s wrong with America. Instead of feeding the hungry children in this country, this douche thinks that its appropriate not to get ‘upstaged’. Are you $%*#ing kidding me? I get it – it’s your money. But WOW.

(i am hoping this story is false)

  21. Lila says:

At least he’s not one of those horrible cheap celebrities that act all entitled and then don’t tip.

  22. the original bellaluna says:

tripmom – No, I don’t think Jay’s going to wind up broke. He’s had his fingers in w-a-y too many pies for w-a-y too long to be MC Hammered.

  23. Goofpuff says:

At least he tipped 20% and paid the tab. Thats loads better than the celebrities that always demand things for free. Its his money so he can spend it how he wishes. And its a business party anyway so a writable tax deduction.

  24. Samigirl says:

@bellaluna, I did something similar with some oil field trash when I worked at a restaurant that rhymes with Snappltees. They got everything (including dessert) comped, with the exception of their drinks-because they knew my gm. They treated me like sh*t the entire time, and tipped me a dime, also in their used ashtray. I followed them outside to their huge, douchey, jacked up trucks, and knocked on the window of the guy who paid the bill. I then dumped the overflowing ashtray in his lap and flounced off 🙂

  25. stella says:

Service must have been good. 20% is customary. Spread the wealth!

  26. anoneemouse says:

Love JZ but he really is ugly.

  27. GossipVixen says:

20% is 20%. I’m just glad the dude tipped! Hope the waitress(es) were able to keep it all. Somehow I have a feeling the restaurant decided to keep a small “convenience fee”.

As to the extravagence, meh. It’s his money. Yes, it’s a lot to spend in an evening, but if Jay Z is foolish enough to spend his money that way, don’t think any of us will be crying for him if he’s forced to do the food stamp hustle at the end of the day 🙂

  28. Liamarie says:

so many idiots think that if they have something comped, they don’t have to tip. Yeah you do. The waitstaff still had to work your table and if they did a good job, you still have to tip. If they sucked, of course, whatever.

  29. TG says:

@BB – I agree with you. It is so easy to decide how others both rich and poor should spend their money. I have a feeling he probably donates a lot more than 50 grand to charity.

  30. mln76 says:

He has a right to do whatever he wants with his money and I have a right to find that kind of display disgusting.

  31. Gymo says:

I wouldn’t worry about how he spends HIS money, at least he’s spending it in the USA. Many millionaires and Billionaires go abroad to buy their Yachts and Diamonds, and also park their money in foreign banks, they are the ones U have problems with.
It’s a business he has been successful in so I take it he knows that he needs to spend this paltry sum to make millions from his venture.

  32. garvels says:

I personally can’t stand the man but it is his money and this still is a free country and it seems like everyone had a good time. Since this was an album release party, he will probably write this off as a business expense. Congrats to the waiter that received the $50,000 tip.

  33. suggabugga says:

dude is ugly as sin. Beyonce wouldn’t have given him the time of day if he wasn’t loaded and came with connections.

  34. Gymo says:

He’s not ugly, he’s a child of God, only the superficial people who pass judgement are truly ugly inside and out.

  35. Nymeria says:

Oh, okay. It will be a tax write-off because it was a business party.

*looks up at the debt ceiling, which has gotten ominously higher*

I’m with mln76 on this one. The post is worth quoting: “He has a right to do whatever he wants with his money and I have a right to find that kind of display disgusting.”

  36. jover says:

I’m mixed on this one; yah it’s his money and he can do with it what he wants, but I’d love to know what he and bouny’s charitable contributions are; I bet most ordinary people give more as a % of their after tax income; his “music” is a joke, and just because it’s popular in some quarters is hardly an argument in its favor – what’s laughable is that this douche thinks he’s cool and hip, but the rap/hip hop crowd is the most uncool shallow consumerist materialist group out there – it’s sad Jimi Hendrix was not only the electric guitar god, coolest black person that ever lived and coolest person ever, but more young people are familiar with this lame assclown than a truly talented hip person like Jimi – the world really is ending.

  37. zomason says:

there is no reason to surprise about it. this is BOSS-JAY the only one BOSS, the real…

  38. Gymo says:

    @Jover, Why so bitter?
It’s like he came to your house and slapped you around. 🙂

  39. Joanna says:

He earned the money, he can spend it any way he wants to.

  40. mike says:

    C’mon, give him a break.

A typical fortune 500 CEO spends that and more on regular basis on entirely frivolous things. Jay Z is not even a blip compared to the spending habits of the REAL wealthy — the CEOs and fund managers.

If you don’t like the mega wealthy throwing their money on crap, do something about it. Like not voting Republican and their support for corporate welfare. The business world is awash in swindlers and crooks while hard working Americans must live off the scraps they throw to us, in the so-called “tricke down” economics.

BTW, for those who think Jay Z will go the way of MC Hammer, you wish. Jay is an average musician at best, but a terrific moneygrubbing businessman who manages his money very carefully. He and 50 Cents are probably two very promminent examples of the rapper-businessman phenomenon. Like actors realizing that the real money lay on the production side of things, Jay and others like him have realized that the real money was in (stock) shares.

  41. hatsumomo says:

Whateves, my man and his friends went out the other night and spent $1200 on SUSHI. And tipped the waiter 180 bucks. I get he and his friends have good jobs and all but still, I grew up poor and balk when I see tabs like that. And still, I have to tell myself quietly, its his money and he has the right to do with it as he pleases. You get used to it.

  42. Sunnyjyl says:

I hate when people don’t tip properly, especially when I am splitting the tab, and have to tip for them as well. Now, this is a crazy ass way to spend money, but hey, at least he tipped correctly.

  43. Viv says:

I don’t mind the tipping but more that he drops money like that on drinks. Being a smart black man I don’t know how he lives with himself knowing that there are plenty of black children in America lacking food, health care and education. I know he is not alone but if he does this regularly it would be sad. He’s a level above Diddy or Lil Wayne and he could act accordingly.

  44. Patricia says:

    Blood money-

he has openly acknowledge engaging in dog fighting – with his own kennel of dogs

    what a great guy

  45. Thea says:

I think he needs to hook up with Gwyneth. They both seem pretentious. I think it is offensive to spend $250K on drinks when he could have donated that money to charity. Yeah, it is his money, blah blah, but it is still offensive. Just like his face is.

  46. Parisienne says:

@mike: exactly my thoughts. Especially these kids dealing with find money are the greatest pigs when it comes to money spending.

People, you just made me realise that Americans can have as much envy as Germans (who always accuse themselve of being a society full of envy-green people).

He is a good businessman and yes, however he earned that money, he did not inherit it.

  47. Of course it’s disgusting and gauche, but at least he paid and didn’t expect to be comp’ed.

I’m glad to hear he tipped the staff well. It’s hard work catering to people’s egos and I’m glad they were well compensated.

  48. richie says:

I went thru the lyrics of all the songs on the new album-man such self bragging about the wealth! He can do what ever he wants to with his money but doing something like this is really disgusting! there are many in US who are jobless and struggle to meet their ends -why not do some community service???!!! I just hate his lyrics and the whole clan!!!!

  49. Nah, nah & nah... says:

Inexplicable. I just don’t get this kind of behavior. But, I didn’t get it when MC Hammer did it, either.

  50. Mitch Buchanan Rocks says:

Good post Mike 🙂 To me when I hear his name I think of Va jay jay. I wonder if he was paying people off to look the other way while he had some um samples.

  51. Lady D says:

“He has a right to do whatever he wants with his money and I have a right to find that kind of display disgusting.” EXACTLY.

  52. Tazina says:

I hope the restaurant didn’t rip off part of the tip. Some do have that policy.

Conspicuous consumption is never attractive but I understand he gives quite a bit to charity so I can’t judge.

  53. Jennifer says:

This actually makes me think better of the guy. I mean Mila Kunis was said to have spent 7 grand on a facial. All kind of celebs and just rich people in general drop their money like this. If they tip the people who serve them, that makes their excesses more sufferable to me. It’s people who lives high on the hog but doesn’t tip?- that’s who disgusts me. 250 grand on a meal is crazy, but he is supporting the business, supporting alot of businesses and people actually, by spending that much. It’s crazy to me, it’s not my values. But. That money will trickle down to alot of places – the vineyards, the grocers, the growers, the hotel, etc etc. That was a GOOD day business wise for alot of businesses. JOb security for the kitchen staff and everyone who works there – for that entire business etc. I think it is crazy to spend that much on drinks and a meal. But on the other hand, He’s actually supporting a lot of peoples’ livelihoods. When I worked at coffee shops and people didn’t tip, I’d still think about how they were supporting me having a job by patronizing the business I worked at, aka keeping it open. I worked in LA and alot of the celebrities wouldn’t tip. So I appreciate people with the manners to tip.

  54. bored says:

His album with Kanye = overrated

  55. kimm says:

I think i am going to quit my job, move to Miami, and become a coctail waitress!!!!

  56. bogie says:

“it’s sad Jimi Hendrix was not only the electric guitar god, coolest black person that ever lived and coolest person ever, but more young people are familiar with this lame assclown than a truly talented hip person like Jimi – the world really is ending”

Jimi Hendrix died of drugs and I never heard about him doing anything for anyone, but himself. Jay-Z is involved in charity work. Also you people know nothing. Him spending that money at a place is keeping the business open and taking care of the wait staff. He did do charity and it was giving it to the waitstaff. Catch a clue.

  57. Moreaces says:

Good for him, I wish I could afford to do something like that.

  58. DetRiotgirl says:

@Gee I waited tables for a long time in a large city (NYC), so I think I can answer your question. This scenario could go one of three ways:

    1. This bar could be a pooled house, meaning everyone shares tips at the end of the night. If so, the entire staff benefited. A lot of the bars I’ve worked at have pooled tips among the cocktail servers, so this could very well be the case here too.

    2. The money went to one server, but the server had to tip out. This is also a strong possibility. Tipping out means giving a certain percentage of whatever you make to your busser, your runner (if you have one) and your bartender. This is usually how full service restaurants do things. I think the most I’ve ever had to tip out was 30%. So, even if that’s the case here, the server still made a lot of money.

    3. The server got to keep everything. But, this last possibility is highly unlikely. The only places I’ve ever worked that let me keep all of my tips were diners in Michigan, back when I was a teenager. So, I would say there’s probably only a 1% chance the server got to keep it all.

Anyway, whatever the details of the situation, no one can argue that isn’t a good night for the wait staff!

  59. Sahidul says:

    One word: Somalia

  60. BeckyR says:

I am not acquainted with ‘Ace of Spades” champagne..what the hell is it?

  61. jover says:

Bogie you get a clue; first, where are the details about how much of his own money and time this rapper gives to “charity”. If you want to know who really gives read Albert brooks Who really gives. Without facts it sounds like you’re his publicist, and his charitable contributions are just scraps.
If this were the 60s he would be denounced as a capitalist tool and pig, but the worm has turned and now he’s successful businessman – producing what sort of products for the benefit of the public may I ask.
Your attempt to dis the greatness and legacy of Jimi Hendrix fails. When this no talent ass clown is senile crawling on all fours looking for his misplaced baubles at the nursing home for old and forgotten rappers, Jimi’s music will be playing everywhere.
THis greedhead exploits the brother’s for his own wealth, plays the race card when criticized, and only makes music for money. SInce the truth is painful, it’s easier to disrespect the legend than admit you’re wrong. BTw, where’s the benefit concert to help the deserving long suffering people of somalia suffering under the jihadist and now famine. Oh, that’s right somali’s not as popular as haiti among the celebutard crowd.

  62. Shoe_Lover says:

It is his money to spend however he likes and none of us know whether or not he donated an equal or greater sum to charity so don’t judge.

Question for the Americans re tipping- i get the restaurant tipping and now how to work that out but i have never been able to work out whether i tip the maids at a hotel and how i do it. I usually leave $5 on the bed a day. Is that right or do the maids not get tipped? I’m sorry but this tipping thing can get really confusing for an Aussie

  63. Nalia says:

Kaiser, since you posted this story you should know that Jay-Z’s and Kanye West’s behavior has not gone unnoticed.

I think it’s crazy he spent that much! Even if he did tip the 20% that’s awesome for the waitstaff but I think most of the time he is frivolous!
