Ralph Fiennes & Gerard Butler bring the badassery in the ‘Coriolanus’ trailer

I’ve been waiting for the trailer for Coriolanus for much too long. I think the release date was originally this fall, but now it’s been pushed back to a December 2 opening in America. This is Ralph Fiennes’ debut as a director, and he gave himself the lead role as Coriolanus. Fortunately for all of us who love accented dong and/or Scottish beefcake, Ralph made the directorial decision to cast Gerard Butler as Coriolanus’s nemesis. Basically, this gets Gerard back to do something that he’s really good at: playing a dramatic, action-oriented hero where he doesn’t have to mask his natural Scottish brogue. Plus, Gerry just looks hot in a military uniform. The film also stars Brian Cox, Jessica Chastain, and Vanessa Redgrave, who gives a performance as Coriolanus’s mother, and she’s already being tipped for a Best Supporting Actress nomination. Here’s the trailer:

Ralph looks very interesting, but it felt like he was doing his Voldemort voice for part of the trailer, right? And Gerry just looks great. He should do more movies like this – supporting parts where he gets to be tough and brutal and steal scenes away from the leads. As for the plot…

Caius Martius ‘Coriolanus’ (Ralph Fiennes), a revered and feared Roman General is at odds with the city of Rome and his fellow citizens. Pushed by his controlling and ambitious mother Volumnia (Vanessa Redgrave) to seek the exalted and powerful position of Consul, he is loath to ingratiate himself with the masses whose votes he needs in order to secure the office. When the public refuses to support him, Coriolanus’s anger prompts a riot that culminates in his expulsion from Rome. The banished hero then allies himself with his sworn enemy Tullus Aufidius (Gerard Butler) to take his revenge on the city.

I swear I saw this play years ago at the Shakespeare theatre in Washington, D.C., and I basically have no memory of the plot. I just remember how cool the set pieces were in that production, and I have a vague memory of all of the Christ and martyrdom imagery in the play. I believe Ralph’s vision of the story is supposed to be vaguely reminiscent of the Bosnian War. It seems faithful to that kind of modernization too, like it’s about urban warfare and genocide in a modern, affluent setting.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to this so much. Ralph and Gerry! YAY!

I bought The Bounty Hunter on DVD – that is how much I love this guy.

And now we Brits have to wait until 20th January for this new film, dammit!

  3. aenflex says:

Oh, the damage I would do to Fiennes. Butlet could just sit back and watch.

  4. RocketMerry says:

    Oh, Gerald…sigh…

Yay! More action-movie porn for me! Like Killer Elite, but with a brogue thrown in for good measure.

2011, the year of Action Movie Porn. LOVING. IT.

Kaiser, my love Gerry was also a scene-stealer in Reign of Fire. I didn’t care for either of the two “leads” (Matthew McConaughey & Christian Bale) but I watched – more than once – just for Gerry.

I’m assuming Fiennes’s name is misspelled on purpose in the headline (Feines — the way he wants people to pronounce it).

  7. ladybert62 says:

In that military uniform, Butler looks good but then he has cut some of his nasty-dirty looking unruly locks. Now just get rid of the beard and you will start to look great from the neck up just like you do from the neck down.

Glad he has given up those useless romantic-comedies and gone back to action things – he does action/bad-good guys well!

  8. the original bellaluna says:

tapioca, have you seen Law Abiding Citizen? If you ignore Jamie Foxx, it’s a nice little Butler piece.

  9. I RUN NEW YORK says:

    These guys are both ugly.

    Gerard Butler is sexy.

Been looking forward to this flick for well over a year now—it’s been in the works for that long. The trailer looks awesome. Always loved Ralph because he is totally badass, no matter what, but GB is still where it’s at. ::sigh::

  12. Aquarius74 says:

Seems like Fiennes can’t get over the Voldemort look. Hope it won’t last too long.

  13. ZenB!tch says:

When did Gerard Butler turn into the slightly cleaner, less giant headed version of that icky Matthew McConnawhatever?

  14. Camille says:

    Meh.

  15. Ally says:

I wish Ralph would wear a wig for parts other than Harry Potter. His pointy head is distracting and unattractive.

  16. Megan says:

Movie Geeks saw it on stage in DC because it is a Shakespeare play. And we though thet hip hop interpretation of sets and costumes just didn’t work. They were trying way too hard.

  17. Lindy says:

LUURVE Coriolanus, but am on the fence about modernized adaptations. Sometimes they work brilliantly, sometimes they stink to high heaven. I am hoping that these two really bring it. Can’t wait to see it!

I don’t crush on celebrities, but Ralph Fiennes is quite handsome. I didn’t realize it until I watched Red Dragon. He’s got very handsome, intense features.
