Mad Men’s John Slattery defends January Jones: “She’s a sweetheart”

26858pcn_loreal18

Too often, we only concentrate on the negative. When it’s someone like January Jones, it’s pretty easy to only see the negative. She sucks as a person, and as an actress. Even her fellow actors, old and young, have no problems proclaiming publicly that she’s a raging bitch. But January does have a few friends in Hollywood! Like… um…??? Oh, here’s January’s Mad Men costar John Slattery, talking about how she doesn’t suck that badly:

We’ve got some good news for January Jones. While the Mad Men star’s former onscreen son, 11-year-old Jared Gilmore, may not think so highly of her, not everyone in the cast is feeling the same way…

“Well, it’s an intimidating character,” John Slattery told us last night at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Performers Peer Group 2011 Emmys cocktail reception at L.A.’s Sheraton Universal Hotel. “I mean, that’s the character. Betty Draper is an intimidating woman I suppose, if you were a seven-year-old boy [or] her son.”

So no diva behavior around set?

“No, she’s a sweetheart,” Slattery said. “We got lucky. We don’t have anybody like that.”
Reps for Jones and Jared declined to comment for our story.

As for what kind of mom he thinks the preggers actress will make, Slattery gushed, “I have no doubts she’ll make a great mother.”

We have more Slattery scoop for you. Make sure to come back here later on to find out what he said about being directed by Man Men costar Jon Hamm.

[From E! News]

Well, that was very nice and noble of John Slattery to step up and defend a lady’s honor. I tend to think that January is probably nicer to men in general – she seems like one of those women. The kind of woman who won’t give other women the time of day, but if an attractive man comes in, January will attempt to flirt, in her way. And if that attractive (“rich”) man is married, so be it.

I’ll stick with the kid’s opinion, I’m sure it’s a more accurate picture of JJ.
(Hope John Slattery isn’t the father!).

  2. gee says:

She’s so pretty when she’s not trying to be Avant Garde, and John Slattery is a FOX. I still am inclined to believe she’s a bitch though.

  3. daisydoodle says:

she’s probably nice when you have something to offer, unfortunately, the child in Mad Men had nothing to offer. We all know plenty of women/men like that.

  4. MissB says:

Its the peeing politician from Sex and the City! (slow on the uptake)

  5. tapioca says:

“I have to work long days with this woman, let’s make them even longer by publically calling her a raging bitch!”

Of course he’s going to say she’s a sweetheart, d’oh!

  6. betty says:

John Slattery is a real gentleman.

  7. constance says:

He is totally just saying that to earn brownie points with the Ice Queen. I just can’t bring myself to feel sorry for her. She can’t act, imo, and she still hasn’t named her baby’s dad. All knowing damn well, we want to know. LOL

  8. tapioca says:

@Constance: But we DO all know! And I can’t tell you from whence I get my insider info, suffice to say that the “J-word” is not used around a certain married man and his associates, even in jest. 😉

I once also knew a boy-band member was gay before he came out, but those are the only 2 bits of celeb gossip I’ve ever been privy to, Hollywood insider I am not!

  9. lucy2 says:

That was nice of him to say. Don’t know that I believe him, I think the kid was being more honest.

I once heard a lengthy interview with him, and Slattery is hilarious.

  10. Mia says:

Nice of John to defend her, but I believe the kid.

  11. KLO says:

I agree with daisydoodle, that’s probably it.
But she’s probably just one of those people that keeps to herself most of the time.
I’m like that, and people sometimes think I’m arrogant because of that. I’m not, I’m just shy and don’t need to make small talk all the time.

  12. Ell says:

Love John Slattery, him and the Hamn in Mad Men double serving of sexiness.

I think JJ’s aloofness has been exagerated somewhat. I’ve seen her with girlfriends, I don’t think she’s necessarily one of those women who only get on with men.

@tapioca – so the father is the obvious choice or has something gone over my head?

  13. baby says:

OMG SOMEONE SAID SOMETHING NICE ABOUT JANUARY JONES THAT MUST MEAN HES THE FATHER!!!! woah, calm down. it sounds like a reporter asked him about it since it was a story and he answered in a classy, diplomatic way. the way adults are supposed to behave. jeebus!

  14. Bermuda Blues says:

I’m 69% sure matthew vaughn is the father.

  15. 6 says:

Kids are brutally honest sometimes. I believe she probably isn’t the nicest person on MM but I’m not sure she is a raging bee either. John Slattery is so handsome and seems like such a gentleman. Love his character on MM.

  16. corey says:

For all the critism and sh-t coming her way, I sincerely hope that she is a raging b-tch and not just a socially awkward, good looking girl who’s getting raked over the coals. Maybe I’m projecting…..I worked in an office full of ladies and remember how they would sit around and b-tch about the pretty girl all day.

  17. CJ says:

Ok, not defending JJ here because I agree her acting skills are meh and there’s the whole getting knocked up probably by a married dude. But I really hate when people get all snarky about “that kind of woman” who only hangs out with guys. That’s been said about me all my life – always by other women – and it irks me. Its not that I don’t want female friends, and I do have a few, its that frankly most of the women I meet are outright bitches to me. Don’t know what it is about me that elicits that response but I get it a lot. I’m also shy and that doesn’t help. So anyway, my point is not every woman who hangs out with guys is a horrible person.

  18. Ms. Candy says:

Kids are usually good with sensing things- AT least that is what my mom always tell me. They can sense when people are a certain type of person.

Maybe it’s the pregnancy that has her being or having a xxxchy attitude

  19. mel says:

She is soooo pretty. She has been pregnant for what seems like FOREVA! If a kid said that about a guy he would be hailed for his focus and seriousness about the “craft”. A woman gets a bitch stamp. So.Unfair.

  20. Sunny says:

Aahhh…January Jones, another one of those women in Hollywood who get hated on irrationally. Sure, she can’t act. Sure, she LOOKS like she’s not friendly. Sure, she’s just one of those people that attracts criticism “just because”.

But what are people’s reasons for actually disliking the woman? She’s pretty? She wears nice clothes? She takes fashion risks and doesn’t mind people’s criticisms? She got pregnant and won’t tattle on the father so the gossip mongrels hiding behind their computers are left guessing? Her character on Mad Men is a bad mother and an awful person, so she must be the same in real life?

Kids are good at sensing things, but kids also have a way of seeing things in black and white. For them, it’s either A or B. They think a person who doesn’t smile and talk often is a mean person. Heck, some kids think their parents are horrible because their parents don’t let them play all day long!

It’s quite amusing that this child was asked about his co-stars and described JJ in an almost negative light compared to the others, while the other child star of the show, Kiernan Shipka (Sally), has not uttered ONE bad word about her adult co-stars. So, is the little boy just that perceptive, good judge of character, and honest, or is Kiernan not that smart when it comes to “measuring” people up? After all, Kiernan herself is still a kid and she’s probably spent more time filming with January Jones than the kid playing Bobby.

  21. filthycute says:

    Kristy Swanson 2.0.

  22. kim says:

“I tend to think that January is probably nicer to men in general – she seems like one of those women.”

Kinda like women who trash other women but swoon over male celebrities despite that they’re douchebags?

Anyway, I’m willing to give JJ the benefit of the doubt. She may seem cold but she’s probably just awkward around people. I like her as Betty Draper but her range is so limited that any other character she tries to play is Betty Draper over and over again.

  23. Dawn says:

    Yeah,he did the ice queen.

  24. janice says:

@Sunny: I totally agree! I’ve seen Mad Men and from what I recall Kiernan (Sally Draper) has far more scenes with the January than the boy who plays her brother. Perhaps, the boy caught her on a bad day(s)? Although, perhaps her current cast mates say nothing but good things about her because they’re still working with her. The boy can get away with saying those things because he no longer has to work on the show.

  25. John Wayne Lives says:

@Kaiser “The kind of woman who won’t give other women the time of day, but if an attractive man comes in…”
She’s totally that kind of woman.
But I think she’s pretty insecure myself.

    @tapioca.. lol

@CJ… I think what’s being said about JJ is more that she’s the one that can’t be bothered with anyone, unless there is some sort of advantage in it for her.

  26. The real bitch says:

Bitch have to be sweet and nice to the kids around her, smile to them.
And how about the secrecy around her pregnancy… we deserve to know the name of the father.
    -nauseating-

  27. really says:

Love John Slattery, he is awesome!

  28. The real bitch says:

Anyway, good luck to her and her baby.
If I receive all this disgusting bitching I couldn’t leave my house and I’d be crying under my duvet.
Good thing she seems to don’t give a f**k.

  29. Turtle Dove says:

    Bermuda Blues – 69… tee-hee

CJ – I think that you need to read Corey’s post to understand that: “I worked in an office full of ladies and remember how they would sit around and b-tch about the pretty girl all day.” Might be true in your case…?

  30. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Kids are often good judges of character, but adults are frequently better ones. Give the man that, for Pete’s sake.

  31. forest says:

“I tend to think that January is probably nicer to men in general – she seems like one of those women”

    Wow. Someone’s projecting…

  32. constance says:

So we still think it’s El Director on the X-flick? I buy it, she would try to “network” with working people using her “assets.” I bet she learned that trick from old Ashton.

  33. clark says:

I don’t really have an opinion on her as an actress considering I’ve never seen her in anything else other than Mad Men but this bothers me the most: making the assumption that she’s nicer to men because “she seems like one of those women” . That is such hypocrisy. That could apply to about 98% of gossip bloggers and commentators. Female celebrities, whether they’re talented or not talented, attractive or unattractive get crapped on the most.
    It’s sad.

  34. Mimi says:

I love her and Mad Men…she’s beautiful and I think she’s a fine actress.

  35. Phoenix says:

Can’t really trust his opinion too much. As you said, she seems the type of woman who would flirt and suck up to men. I’ve known some women who have essentially being vile, manipulative bitches, but who any man would say was a ‘lovely’ because she’s got a good rack and smiles nicely at them.

  36. olga says:

Mimi:agree with you! I also liked her in the. She’s beautiful and I think she’s a fine actress.

  37. cannonball says:

I can’t believe how beautiful she is on Mad Men. Does she purposely down her looks in real life. Is she going for the younger crowd look of Tara Read and Lindsey Lohan? She looks SKANKY in 3/4 the pictures I’ve seen her in.
