Lady Gaga goes “bare,” covers Bazaar again: “Artifice is the new reality”

gaga11

Ugh. Lady Gaga covers the October issue of Harper’s Bazaar. She just had the cover in May, for the love of God, although I doubt Gaga remembers that train wreck of coked-out musings and extreme inappropriateness (like saying the ghost of Alexander McQueen – who basically still warm at the time – had written “Born This Way”). Anyway, unlike Gaga’s last pictorial, which featured Gaga’s little-known third tit and an assortment of tragic styles, Gaga decided to go “low-key” for this shoot, done by Inez and Vinoodh. Some are saying that Gaga is “bare-faced” on the cover. She’s not. She’s just not wearing any discernable eye makeup, which gives her a “naked” look. I spy lipstick and powder, at the very least. I don’t hate Gaga when she’s doing low-key, and surprisingly, when she’s not covered in crap, she looks so more feminine and interesting (to me, at least). As for the interview… it’s really boring. The full piece is here. Here are some highlights:

Gaga on how Donatella Versace threw open the doors of the Versace archive in Milan: “It was me and my friends,” Gaga remembers of this particular fashion moment. “We were all running around this warehouse laughing and putting on jackets and shoes. We started crying at one point. I’ve been dreaming of seeing those outfits my whole life.”

On new fashion: Lately, “there are some amazing emerging kids from Parsons. I’ve been wearing a lot of young designers,” she explains. She wore a custom-made Hussein Chalayan dress in her recent “Yoü and I” video and chuckles that without McQueen, “I’d be naked.”

Artifice is the new reality: “I don’t really view it as ‘natural,'” she explains. “I think that artifice is the new reality. It’s more about just being honest and sincere to the core of what you do. Whether I’m wearing lots of makeup or no makeup, I’m always the same person inside.”

Does she ever get tired of her “Gaga” act? “Sometimes I do. It all really depends on my mood for the day. But I think the perception that I ‘put it on’ every day is probably not true.” In Gaga’s mind, “putting it on” is subject to interpretation. “Don’t you think that what’s on the cover of a magazine is quite artificial?” she asks. “There’s this idea that it’s all natural, but everything’s been staged to look natural. It is also an invention. It’s just that my inventions are different. I often get asked about my artifice, but isn’t fashion based on the idea that we can create a fantasy?”

What’s expected: “I try to not focus on what people expect from me,” she says. “I think what has been lovely about my relationship with the public is that they expect something unexpected from me.”

“Her body image is as fearless as her fashion.”: “I’m very free-spirited,” she says, like a Swede in a spa. “Even when I was a kid, I used to run around naked with the babysitter, driving her crazy.” She attributes her body confidence to dancing, and “I do yoga, I do Bikram and I run, and I eat really healthy. You know, my work sort of feeds me. I keep in shape by working hard.”

Gaga’s downtime: Even when she’s not touring, Gaga works “about 16 to 20 hours a day. And when I’m alone, I write, I imagine, I create things, and I decide how I want to do my future performances. I don’t take much time off.”

Alone time and reading: And due to her crushing travel schedule, Gaga spends a lot of time on her own. “When you’re alone as much as I am,” she observes, “you become accustomed to your solitude and embrace it.” Of late, she’s been immersing herself in plays. “I love John Patrick Shanley. And I’ve been reading some books that I loved when I was in theater school, like Bertolt Brecht. Those books really changed my life.”

Gaga has also taken up surfing, which she tried for the first time on a princely two-day vacation to Mexico in August. “I fell off a lot in the beginning,” she says, “but one of the surfers said to me, ‘Now that you can stand up, just look into the future and enjoy the ride.’ I thought that was an interesting metaphor about life.”

[From Harper’s Bazaar]

Once again, ugh. I still have no friggin’ idea why Bazaar gave Gaga the cover for the second time in five months. At least Gaga wasn’t high as a goddamn kite in this interview, but that’s a problem too – because Gaga doesn’t have anything interesting to say when she’ not coked out of her skull or making up stories about how misunderstood she was or how hard she struggled. Boring. Or ART?!?!

    “I spy lipstick and powder”
And foundation and concealer. And a strategically placed, very thin line of eyeliner in some light colour. And some gloss on the eyelids to make them shine subtly in the flash lights. AND some tiny bit of shadow on the outer corner of the eye.
One make up girl once told me that the nude look actually requires so much more work, products and thought than regular make up.

  2. Kiki says:

    regardless, she is still unattractive.

  3. teehee says:

Reminds me very much of D’arcy, of smashing pumpkins.
    I think D’arcy did it better 😉
Although Gaga does have nice strong natural features that are enviable (when you can actually see them)

Yes, “nude/bare” is a style of makeup; to get a perfect look even if it looks like a perfect natural face, is a lot of makeup and lights and after effects.

  4. bee says:

She looks like Kermit the Frog. She is really ugly and I’m not mean. That’s a fact.

  5. Lucy says:

If only she’d embrace her slightly odd natural face instead of covering it up on make-up, sequins, and horns. It’s not a bad face and I bet a lot more people would take her more seriously.

  6. Franny says:

I wish instead of this “bare” look, they had done a “natural makeup” look. Ya know, normal person makeup? some regular eyeliner, mascara, some blush? I think she would be quite pretty. Its striking the difference some eye makeup can make.

  7. Katyusha says:

In these photos, she’s got the Chloe Sevigny thing going on – is she ugly? Is she pretty? Just don’t know!

  8. Photo Jojo says:

    I am officially over her.

  9. Suzie says:

    She’s very opinionated this woman.

  10. Kara Ann says:

Lady Gaga has always bored me. If you’re old enough, you realize all this has been done before and done better. The only thing about her that interests me is her music.

  11. Jayna says:

That was the weirdest thing I had seen, that pap photo of Gaga surfing with a full wig all messed up from the waves. How bizarre. Maybe she has no hair left from the bleaching.

  12. Mary jones says:

I always forget how young she is. She seems much older. And i think she is pretty in some pics depends on what angle they shoot her at.

  13. Poison Ivy says:

I’m through with her since the meat-dress. She’s acting like a 5-year-old desperately seeking for attention with all that crappy clothes, make up and wigs. Get rid off this stuff and the drugs and focus on your music again.

I would’t be surprised if her record company dropped some stacks on Bazaar so they have her on the cover again. Her album needs PR ’cause it’s not selling too well, is it?

  14. cmc says:

    @ kiki

    Yup

  15. danielle says:

    I like it!

  16. Darlene says:

I think she’s gorgeous in these photos.

I’ll buy this “natural” look more than I ever would that “natural” shoot of Angelina Jolie with that purse/bag in Cambodia or something.

  17. Jules says:

Stick with the get-ups you rip off from everyone else. I have not lost my appetite for lunch.

  18. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Where did they say Gaga was wearing no makeup? I don’t see it. I am pretty sure when they said bare they meet not dressed up in her usual Gaga attire. Anyway the interview wasn’t boring, since when is being let into the Versace archives boring? The whole thing was interesting. Lady Gaga is like a huge part of my life. I listen to her music every single day. Every time I see her on this site I groan. If you dislike someone so much just don’t cover her like you don’t cover Zoe Saldana.

My soul feels like its dying when I read the comments. Like seriously…Lady Gaga is boring? Could there be a group of more closed minded people anywhere. Republicans….

  19. Mindy says:

yeah.. “bare” and “natural”. there is PLENTY of makeup on her face in these shots. very light foundation, concealer, DEFINITELY eyeshadow. And don’t forget the WIG she’s wearing and those bleached eyebrows – isn’t she really a brunette???

enough is enough Lady Naglas should just GO AWAY.

  20. Tazina says:

She is beautiful and so so talented. She writes her own songs. She slowed down “Glory” when she sang it on Howard Stern and it was incredible. I hadn’t realized she had such a fantastic voice. Everyone there was blown away when it ended. You could hear a pin drop.

  21. DethHammer says:

    Love Angelina,

People have a right to their own opinions and critiques about a multi millionaire celebrity (which Gaga is) and you have a right to your own.

I understand why you feel hurt that people on here don’t seem to like Gaga the way you do, but people are people and we all have different perspectives.

I adore Trent Reznor and I even wanted to be him when I was younger (even though I’m a girl) but I am objective and accepting enough to know that he has done some very douchey things in the past and present, because he’s human and flawed just like us “regular folk”, and if someone bashes him online, I’m not going to declare internet jihad on his detractors.

Both Trent and Gaga have good lives. The best revenge is living well.

Rejoice in your own truth and live well.

  22. curleque says:

@LOVE ANGELINA: Because people question Gaga, they are close-minded and, therefore, Republican? So, hanging on Gaga’s every word and not questioning what she says is being open-minded and, therefore, a Democrat?

Yes, Gaga is boring, because her whole schtick has been done and redone by other (Madonna, Annie Lennox, Blondie, David Bowie, etc) before her, and we, who are over the age of 21, are tired of it!

  23. jover says:

Agree poison ivy – i think all these fashion/pop culture/ womens mags are being paid off in some way they simply recycle the same 10-15 celebs haven’t we seen enough of lady xerox; with my dying breath I want to see great fashion photog and models on these covers not this overexposed brittle little mediocre narcissist. Please tazina for the umpteenth time, check the cd credits most of her songs are Co-Written; (Btw with written with 3 other people); she has everything outsourced – media, costumes, choreography, pr, vids – because she’s a total industry product collecting corporate endorsements with the best.Dethhammer knows more of her real background – she poses as a rebel to distract the fact that she is part of the industry machine – if she’s such a rebel then why didn’t she act on Adam Levine’s criticism of what MTV has become, and boycott in a show of solidarity for real music – Never would happen she needs the attention to sell her mediocre btw cd.

  24. DethHammer says:

Of course artifice is the new reality; the corporations are payin’ her big bucks to keep feeding the masses false notions of consumerist Rebellion TM.

And even with Gaga herself; she has to wear wigs and weaves now because so much of her hair has broken off and fallen out from all the bleaching and chemicals (and it may even be due to her lupus becoming active although I sincerely hope not). When I watched her You and I “Nymph” fashion video that she did with Vinoodh and Inez and she was almost bare-faced, I could tell how much she has tweaked her face; her eyes were never that slanted two years ago and her nose has diminished in size from what it was from 4 to 6 years ago. And on that Bazaar cover there is still obvious Photoshopping going on. At least Gaga didn’t say the cover was natural; I’ll give her that.

  25. ZenB!tch says:

Whenever Gaga goes “bare” she looks like something that the 70s barfed out. OMG! She looks like Angie Bowie! ICK!

  26. Trillion says:

I am so glad that young girls/guys today have someone like Lady Gaga to inspire them. Nobody else like her. She intelligent, well spoken, very very talented, hard working, creative, weird and brave. Love her.

  27. Kezia says:

The “no makeup” look (i.e. loads of makeup)make her nose job look all the more pronounced-how did she fit in the time for it?!

  28. DethHammer says:

@Jover, thank you. I was a big Gaga fan from 2008-2009. I researched as much as I could about her from non-biased sources. And you’re right; anyone can go to Wikipedia and Sony BMI and look up the songs, and see in black and white, that she only CO-WRITES 99% of her songs. And her wealthy corporate bigwig father paid for and owns her song-publishing label, House of Gaga Publishing Inc. These are facts. And I’m just talking about the music aspect of her career. She does even less when it comes to the design/fashion aspects.

  29. bluhare says:

I think she’s got a great face. She can go ugly, she can go gorgeous if she wanted to. She’s also got talent; she can actually sing.

All that being said, I wish she’d cut out some of the theatrics and pare things down. I think she’d be a lot better.

  30. faye says:

delusion and bullshit is the new reality.

  31. Kelly says:

@jover, hear hear. It is the same 10-15 “artists” (or whatever the hell we should call them) who are recycled over and over. My 9-year-old wants to know why there are only about a dozen songs in rotation among the 3 pop music stations in our area… I just tell him it’s a sad state of affairs, and switch to the classic rock station so we can listen to ZEPPELIN.

But I also agree w @bluhare – she can look peculiar, avant garde, hideous, classic, gorgeous. And she can sing. She could do without the rest of the nonsense and still sell records. Look at Beyonce! She dances, she sings, she has hair. End of story.

  32. 4Real says:

Enough with this FUGLY self-centered delusional BYOTCH! STFU CACA!

  33. LOVE ANGELINA says:

@DethHammer I am actually more upset are people twisting everything Gaga does and says and making it ugly. Trying to diminish everything she has accomplished with generic comments of “Oh she copied this, this, and that” instead of noticing her talent, nope the people here just wanna sweep it under the rug like its nothing and thats tragic.

Labeling what they think of as copying, instead of hearing Gaga’s message of self acceptance while she helps people find the tools to think outside of the box. Thats closed mindness. I don’t care if people don’t like her, but for God sake don’t put your crap on her. Don’t call her selfish, a vain, and a copycat without even giving her a chance.

  34. MissVJJ says:

Boring and expected. Not talented and not a genious. Just another packaged crap of the entertainment industry to brainwash the sheep. Baaaah! Lady Gaga is such a good artist!

  35. vale says:

‘Now that you can stand up, just look into the future and enjoy the ride.’ Interesting, really? You’d think someone so busy “imagining” would have come up with that, like, a looong time ago.

  36. wunderkindt says:

Looks like she’s had rhinoplasty and tons of make up slapped on her face in order to get that ‘natural’ look!

  37. jover says:

Kelly just a suggestion try the mighty zep’s How the west was won – two nights in ’72 at the forum LA – most of the iconic songs were written by that time, and their live renditions piss all over the studio engineered autotuned pointless formation dancing music vids of today. THere’s simply no comparison, and it isn’t nostalgia, bands today can’t play live that way no matter how hard they try; it just can’t be done. WHile there are still good bands out there (try Dave Matthews excellent live), most fall way short of the mighty zeppelin.

  38. Kelly says:

@jover, I agree! On my classic rock station, September is ZEPTEMBER, so I’m lovin’ life. Lots and lots of live tracks! “Whole Lotta Love” – now that will get you going in the morning! You’re right, the era of pure raw power (and crushing drummers like Bonham) is gone forever.

  39. Heavenbound says:

And mind you this is with a nose job… Cant imagine what she looked like pre rhinoplasty … still fug, makeup, no makeup, with lb. of meat on, costume no costume… talentless twit.

  40. Trillion says:

How could anyone say she’s talentless? OK, you don’t like her music. No problem. But have you seen her sit at a piano and play and sing versions of her hits? She’s amazing. I don’t like Billy Joel but I wouldn’t call him talentless. It’s just not my kind of music. There’s a difference. Talentless is more along the lines of someone who doesn’t know shit about music, can’t perform beyond lip-syncing and can’t sing without pro-tools and auto-tune. Gaga can sit at a piano and kill it. That takes talent and confidence. She’s got it in spades.

  41. Cherry Rose says:

@LOVE ANGELINA – Not everyone thinks that Gaga is amazing like you do. I personally find her annoying, fake, and full of herself. And no, she really isn’t that talented. If Gaga is really that talented, why not put her up against artists like Tori Amos and Diamanda Galas, or Amy Lee of Evanescene? You know why that doesn’t happen?

Because if Gaga was put up against them, Tori, Diamanda, and Amy Lee would show just how mediocre Gaga really is.

  42. Jen says:

Am I the only one who thinks she looks like Goop’s sister in these pics?

  43. colt13 says:

This looks lie a leftover shoot from 1971.

Gaga may be one of the few women who should wear more makeup.
