Sarah Jessica Parker in leather: “too young” or just fine?

wenn3502383

This look from Sarah Jessica Parker in confusing the hell out of me. I’m also confused as to why SJP was the guest of honor at the Manolo Blahnik store. I mean, I get that people associate SJP with Monolos, but she was actually in the store, signing shoes for people, like she designed them or something. Since it was all for charity, though, I guess I won’t harp on about it. Anyway, thoughts on SJP’s leather dress? I feel like…sigh… okay, let me work this out. My thoughts on SJP’s style lately: she’s been dressing “too young” and like she has no sense of color. Everything she wears looks childish to me lately. It’s not that I think SJP should just pack it up and wear muumuus for the rest of her life, and I do like that she’s covering up more and more, just because I don’t want to see her veiny, scary arms. But there’s something “off” about her style over the past few months. I think her failed collaboration with Halston did a number on her, maybe? Anyway, here’s more about the event:

You can take the girl out of Sex And The City, but you can’t take Sex And The City out of the girl! While Sarah Jessica Parker has always insisted she is very different from her iconic character Carrie Bradshaw – there’s one thing they’ve always had in common – a love for shoes. And last night, a leather-clad Parker celebrated her love of footwear as she teamed up with Manolo Blahnik for Fashion’s Night Out in New York.

The mother-of-three arrived at the footwear designer’s Midtown Manhattan boutique in an stylish brown leather dress and white stilettos that would have made her TV alter-ego proud. Parker was the star attraction of the event to celebrate Fashion’s Night Out where she signed pairs of high-heels she co-designed with Blahnik.

As well as signing regular autographs for fans, she also got a treat when someone presented the blue pair of buckled Manolo pumps, similar to ones worn by Carrie in the first Sex And The City film when she married Mr Big in City Hall.

Proceeds of sales from last night’s event went to the Fund for Public Schools – a cause close to Parker’s heart.

Blahnik also arranged for a one-off Manolo milkshake truck to cruise the nearby streets selling shakes, with the proceeds also going to the same charity.

Meanwhile, Parker has been speaking about how she balances her career and motherhood while promoting her new film I Don’t Know How She Does It.

She said: ‘It’s complicated and it’s basically everything I ever wanted. It’s most difficult at the most surprising moments. You plan to be away and it’s a finite period of time and you can make sense of it and then something happens and you have to leave unexpectedly, say to go out for a work thing, that you didn’t plan and all of a sudden that’s the moment that breaks you. It’s surprising the things that are painful or the things that you feel the most conflict about, or these measures of guilt that show up. It’s like Jenga. It’s a house of cards.’

[From The Mail]

Sure. Whatever. She exhausts me, and I will be so happy when her promotional rounds for I Don’t Know How She Does It are over so I can stop hearing about how she’s a great mom.

I think I’ve put my finger on what bugs me about SJP in this dress – this dress looks like something Blake Lively would wear. Blake could pull it off – but can SJP?

That’s funny. My first thought when I saw that picture was “Looks like something Blake Lively would wear”. Maybe she just looks like Blake in these pics… Too bad.

  2. Liz says:

for some strange reason, no matter how much she bugs me, I think she looks fine in this

  3. gee says:

I hate this dress. UGLY, ugly dress.

  4. Bella says:

    i think it’s too young a look, too…

  5. velourazure says:

i actually think she looks ok in this, although i do think it’s probably the last time in her life she’ll get away with head to toe leather.

  6. Mimijeud says:

I don’t particularly care for her but I don’t think the dress is too young. I’m more offended by her unending love affair with these awkward-lengthed skirts/dresses. It’s not a flattering look for her at all. Cuts her legs off to me in a way that is not a good look and emphasizes her bowed legs making it seem as if her legs are coming from 2 different hipbone planets not under the same skirt. Even if she just went for a little shorter like knee-length, it would look miles better. She should either go for shorter or longer. Midi is not for her.

  7. zephyr says:

I like it a LOT. Just don’t like her in it.
And the bag – no, no!
I think Dame Helen could carry it off but….I’m so sick & tired of Sarah.

  8. Samigirl says:

For some reason, that cropped cardgan is reminding me of…idk, body armor or something. Like a gladiator type look. It makes her upper body look much larger than it is. It’s not a good look for her.

  9. Diane says:

@samigirl: I was thinking the same thing about armor, like where is she hiding her sword. It’s just awful.

  10. Honey B says:

    Ageists!

  11. Sue says:

I think she look good in the outfit.

  12. MissilePanda says:

Her leather outfit matches her leather skin

  13. kimi says:

I think she looks OK in this outfit. She is dressing her age actually. Just because she is nearly 50, it doesn’t mean she has to abandon prints, colors, leather and fur. Lively has too much of California girl vibe for this kind of dress.

  14. Goofpuff says:

LOVE the shoes. Meh on the dress. The skirt is flattering on her, but the top, not so much.

  15. lucy2 says:

It does say in the article that she “co-designed” the shoes she was signing. Either way, good fundraiser for a good cause, I could see lots of SATC fans wanting a signed pair.

Don’t like the dress, but don’t think it’s too young for her.

  16. embertine says:

OK, now I really must be smoking the crack because I love this, think she looks amazing in it, and covet it hugely.

Shoes are ghastly dull though. I’d have gone for a plain shiny dark red heel.

  17. chris says:

Bad outfit imo. It’s like she can’t look smashing if Pat Fields doesn’t dress her.

  18. spinner says:

The dress is not too young for her. The color & fabric are too harsh for an already harsh looking woman.

  19. Sam says:

My first thought was how hot she was going to get wearing all leather. I had a pair of leather pants, eons go. My BF and I got a pair each specially made. (Ahh to be young and cashed up again.) But damn they were hot. Wearing them outside in winter = awesome. Once going inside = a hot mess.

  20. mannequin says:

I think she looks fine. This leather isn’t a “young” leather but rather, a classy leather. And she wears it well.

  21. Christine says:

I don’t think the dress is too young. I think it’s too ugly.

  22. Anguishedcorn says:

I don’t mind the dress, I just can’t ever get over how very very unattractive she is.

  23. SallyJay says:

“The mother-of-three arrived at the footwear designer’s Midtown Manhattan boutique in an stylish brown leather dress and white stilettos that would have made her TV alter-ego proud”

    Brown dress? WHITE shoes?

Am I colour blind or what?

  24. KateNonymous says:

I don’t mind it. I mean, it’s not what I’d pick, but I’m not living her life in any way.

Although the age question makes me wonder–wouldn’t we all rave about Helen Mirren if she wore something like this?

  25. anonymoose says:

wow, she looks harsh in black.

too “young” of an outfit? contrare…this looks like an old lady dress made up in leather trying to make the garment appear edgy, and FAILING to do so.

  26. palermo says:

I can’t believe anybody thinks she is good looking in any way. Face like a horse, bone thin, man arms, veiny, and totally bowlegged. It cracks me up how she has to stand with her legs 2 feet apart or crossed weirdly to hide her strange legs. Oh yeah, the dress is ugly.

  27. Kim says:

LOVE this outfit. I would wear this in a heartbeat! Its not to young – i think it would look silly on a young person because its a full skirt more for an older woman.

  28. Blake says:

I like it. The full skirt makes it okay for me.

  29. taxi says:

A full. pleated skirt in leather just looks odd to me. I’d like it better in fabric.

If Blake wore it, it would be shortened to above the knees.

  30. nikett says:

The pix is a kind of horrible i don’t believe she kind of beauty but may she beautiful by intelligent.

  31. Ally says:

I love it. It’s sophisticated, but edgy.

    And finally, a side part!

  32. Blithe says:

I think the whole dress is really, really fug. But, (please don’t hate on me) I saw the trailer for this movie she’s doing and though it looks pretty formulaic, she seems hilarious in it, and she looks frazzled and long-in-the-tooth for the whole thing…which is soooo much more believable of motherhood, especially when combined with a work career, than the whole “I’m so perfect I have time to flat-iron my hair AND cook all while watching ‘the children’ and getting copy to my editor all at the same time” shit. So, I felt I really needed to hand her that.

  33. Kelly says:

    She looks nice.

  34. smh says:

she pulls it off methinks. but leather in this heat would fry me alive. goddess forbid.

  35. paul says:

Think she looks amazing in this outfit!
Too many women are told they cannot wear
leather because they are too old! How ageist! If you have the confidence & will feel sexy in it – just go for it!
