Brad Pitt’s Sports Illustrated cover: leather-fug or strikingly hot?

pitt11

Note: I’ll have the photos from the Moneyball premiere up in a few moments. This post is just about Brad’s appearance on the October issue of Sports Illustrated.

Okay, so… how terrible is this cover? Brad Pitt is one of the few non-athletes to ever get a cover of Sports Illustrated, and this is what’s done to him? He looks like a piece of leather. It actually reminds me of those odd, too-close-for-comfort photos Chuck Close did of Brad for an issue of W Magazine a few years ago. Normally, the camera loves Brad, but sometimes… the camera gets too close, or the Photoshop wizards get overzealous, and something awful happens. Anyway, some highlights from SI:

He plays a baseball coach in the upcoming Moneyball, but Brad Pitt is anything but experienced in America’s favorite pastime.

“It’s shameful how little I know about baseball … I’m amazed they let me do this movie,” Pitt, 47, tells Sports Illustrated in this week’s cover story, which will hit newsstands on Wednesday.

“Baseball and I didn’t get along that well,” he adds. “I wrestled one year [in high school]. I dove one year. Everything but baseball.”

What drew him to the role, says Pitt: “I’m a sucker for the underdog story.”

Pitt, who also graced last week’s cover of Entertainment Weekly and Parade Magazine is one of just a handful of non-sports figures to grace the cover of the sports magazine.

Former cover subjects include Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Stephen Colbert, Bob Hope, Ed Sullivan, Steve McQueen, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John F. Kennedy, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton.

[From People]

I kind of like Brad for not pretending that he’s some baseball super-fan. Some men just don’t get into it – most of my dude friends, past and present, have only really given a crap about basketball, and they ignore football and baseball and everything else except women’s tennis (obviously).

Meanwhile, Entertainment Weekly released some additional excerpts of Brad’s cover story for… last week’s issue? Right? Anyway, Brad totally denies that whole “Brad Pitt saved a woman’s life, is a saint just like Angelina” story:

EW: I just read about how you rescued an extra on the set. Congratulations on that.
BRAD PITT: I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Seriously? It was all over the Internet.
I make a point of not seeing that stuff.

An extra fell down and was going to get trampled, but you swooped in on a horse and it was very gallant.
On a horse? I haven’t been on a horse. There are no horses in the movie.

Okay, forget the horse—maybe I’m drunk. But you came and saved her somehow and it was very gallant.
That’s bulls—. Listen, when someone falls down, you’re going to help.

Honestly? If I were a movie star, I would send one of my assistants.
Listen, a lot of our scenes are with masses of people. We’ve had several scenes where people have fallen down.

Have you saved any lives at all?
I have not saved any lives, okay? People fall and twist ankles—the extras have really been giving it. And you don’t want people to get hurt. If I’m not the first one there, someone else is.

Not to take anything away from your rescue, but I think Kate Winslet saving Richard Branson’s mother was a little more heroic.
[Laughs] I did see that.

[From EW]

It sounds like Brad did lift someone to safety, but he doesn’t really consider that “saving a life” – which is nice. It’s nice that he’s humble, and it’s nice that he’s realistic.

Oh, and did you know that Brad’s Moneyball character is doing chewing tobacco throughout the movie? Ugh. Brad confirmed: “That came easily. I grew up with a little dip.”

I’d smash it like broken dishes! Bradley William Pitt will never not be hot to me. He’s delicious 😀

  2. Henry says:

He’s so much better looking now that he doesn’t have that ‘babyface’. He reminds me of a combo of Robert Redford and Clark Gable… nice, handsome and rugged.

  3. Mrs. Odie 2 says:

They airbrushed all his lines away and made him almost the same color as the background. It looks weird.

  4. atlantapug says:

How did my mechanic end up on the cover of Sports Illustrated????

Sorry, he just always looks like the dirty guy who gets under your car in a wife beater while smoking a cig.

I just don’t get the attraction to him.

  5. angie says:

Sorry he still has baby/boy face. And he is getting old in ugly way like Kevin Bacon. This kind of look works until you 40 then you look like old teenager.

  6. lily says:

    @silken_floss: Agree totally.

  7. Quest says:

I like Brad, always did…but I am not digging the Grizzly look on him.

  8. Dominique says:

Anybody else never really realize how pretty his eyes are? The cover is not even bad. I love the dramatics here. lol

  9. Vee says:

The cover is awful, but I’ll still be one of the first in line for the movie, it looks fantastic!

  10. jen says:

I saw the Moneyball commercial last night & good lord he looks old.

He looks like Robert Redford…Robert Redford now.

  11. Toot says:

Parade (which was a close pic) and EW had way better covers. Brad looked better at his premiere in Oakland than he does here.

I still love Brad, I just blame SI.

  12. Derpy says:

This is the first time I’ve ever been attracted to Brad Pitt. My head and my biscuits are in total disagreement right now.

  13. Cheyenne says:

Not that crazy about this cover. The EW cover is way better.

  14. gee says:

He’s kind of grown on me. He’s so dumb and sweet. Like he doesn’t mean any harm ever, he just wants what he wants and is trying his best.

    Also: hot.

  15. spinner says:

He’s just not aging well. He looks very weathered, beyond his years.

  16. womanfromthenorth says:

Hot… he will always be hot, no matter what age! Love Love Love him and always will.

  17. Cherry Rose says:

@Lady Jane – Holy crap, that’s what I thought too. First thought that popped into my head.

While I’m not a woman who goes gaga over Brad Pitt, I will say he has beautiful eyes.

  18. Nev says:

Very hot. Now he seems to be a loving caring man with a sense of purpose. Glad Angie/kids helped in bringing out a good quality in him.

  19. BeckyR says:

Please, please, please….no more about this overhyped movie extra (whose career started rising only after he married Jennifer A). His smug looking puss makes me want to punch his lights out.

  20. jinni says:

It looks like those pictures on the cover of National Geographics were they took a humanoid skull dating back to before the ice ages and computer generated a face on it.

  21. Your mama says:

    So not hot.

  22. orion70 says:

This guy has always given my biscuits the flatline, even back in his Thelma and Louise days. The only time I found him remotely hot was in Oceans Eleven.

  23. SolitaryAngel says:

I’m GLAD y’all don’t like it–more Brad for ME!! *gotta cool my biscuits down*

  24. Praise St. Angie! says:

I saw this cover yesterday somewhere and went “WTF did they do to his face?!”

he’s a handsome man and they succeeded in making him look terrible. yes, like leather. and they sort of feminized his face or something…he’s more rugged than that.

  25. BeckyR says:

    #22, you nailed it!!!!

  26. Nev says:

It is quite comical indeed to know this man is going to get blasted just because he didn’t want to stay with Anistonloonie’s goddess when things got bad in the marriage. Pitt has giving so much to loads of people in need and deserve better treatment. A load of Hollywood stars would not even care enough to help any one in need.

  27. CJ says:

There’s a homeless guy in my hometown who looks like Brad Pitt, people call him the Homeless Hunk, and when I saw this mag cover I thought for a second that Homeless Hunk had struck it big. He really does look EXACTLY like Pitt, especially here. Wow.

  28. Sillyone says:

Angelina is one lucky bitch. I hope she does the naughty things to him I can only dream of doing. I do think men look better with age, I have always thought that though.

  29. N.D. says:

They’ve choosed weird coloring but otherwise he looks good.

  30. canan says:

Please, please, please….no more about this overhyped movie extra (whose career started rising only after he married Jennifer A). His smug looking puss makes me want to punch his lights out.

    Seriously? really?

Look at the careers of Friends cast and the only one people talking about is JA and thats because of her pity party and never ending love life-not her movies.

  31. Jackson says:

I kinda love it. He was always too much of a pretty boy for me. (Other than when he wore that hat in ‘A River Runs Through It’…mmmm.) I like older, scruffy Brad. And the pic is like he just came in from playing ball, all dusty and suntanned. Yes, I like it.

  32. J O'C says:

    Bad spray tan.

  33. sharylmj says:

YUMMY!!!!! LOVE ME SOME MR. PITT !!!

  34. nan says:

    HOT, HOT, HOT!!!!

  35. lucy2 says:

    Awful cover.

  36. Cerulean says:

Yeah ok. He had NO career before JA. That’s a load if ever I heard one. It’s the other way around whether you like her or not. She married up the Hollywood food chain. He will always be more famous, a better actor and more powerful than her. Get over it.

I dunno. Kind of dig him older. Never liked him younger.

  37. Original Tiffany says:

    @21
Have you checked his imbd page because this guy was in some serious movies way before JA, Legends of the Fall, A river Runs through it, even Fight club was released in 98, 12 monkeys, 7 years in Tibet, etc. All done BEFORE he hooked up with JA.
Might want to fact check before you state he was a starlet before her. I am not even a loonie of any kind, but that is a dumbass statement.

  38. Munkey says:

    @jinni: Perfection! 😆

  39. Nev says:

Ditto Original Tiffany on the #21 BeckR making a dumbass statement.

  40. Happy21 says:

I think he is GORGEOUS! I have always thought so but more now. I don’t care that he’s aging. I’m glad he’s not using effin’ botox or some shit cause he would look worse. Its funny a friend and I always loved him way back in the Legends of the Fall days and now she thinks he’s aging poorly and I think he’s hotter. LOL, then again she’s the type that WILL get botox and has an issue with men with gray hair or men that are balding…And she’s 35 so its about the right age for gray and bald men!

  41. Ell says:

Even photoshop can’t help him… poor Brad.

  42. photo jojo says:

Hot. Smokin’ hot. Damn I hate myself for saying that but there it is….

  43. Lookin’good,Mr.Pitt!!

  44. Trek Girl says:

    I think he looks great.

  45. Anguishedcorn says:

Definitely not hot to me on that cover. Scary leathery, and orange.

  46. Cheyenne says:

@#21: Sorry, honey, Pitt was a household name long before he ever met Jenny-poo.

    1991 — Thelma and Louise
    1992 — A River Runs Through It
    1993 — Kalifornia
1994 — Legends Of The Fall
1994 — Interview With the Vampire
    1995 — Se7en
    1995 — Twelve Monkeys
1997 — Seven Years in Tibet

1998 — 2004 Aniston years. Six wasted years with nothing outstanding, except maybe Troy in 2004.

2005 — Dumps Aniston, hooks up with Angie.

2005 — Mr and Mrs. Smith
    2006 — Babel
    2007 — Oceans Thirteen
    2008 — Burn After Reading
    2008 — Benjamin Button
    2009 — Inglourious Basterds
    2010 — Megamind

I think you get the idea.

  47. Sakyiwaa says:

Ditto on the eyes. I ve always loved his clear blue eyes. Shiloh’s got ’em down pat!

I think the cover is okay. A lil’ too bronze… They coulda made Brad’s face pop a little more.

Plus, those Chuck Close pics were hella uncomfortable but I loved ’em!

Aww, of cos, he doesnt want to make a big deal outta helping a falling extra. He’s sweet like that even if some of y’all think he’s not the sharpest tool in the box.

@CJ. Oooh, I’d like to run into Homeless Hunk!

  48. HeiN says:

I love you B but seriously, ew.

  49. Original Tiffany says:

Thank you, Cheyenne! And as I said even though FIght Club was released in 98, he probably filmed it or got the role before JA. I LOVE Burn after Reading-love!
Malkovich was reading that script the day I did his scan. True story, nice guy but definitely deserves the weird factor:)

  50. G says:

Yup, this is what 50ish looks like. This cover is aimed at a a male audience, so I think no harm, no foul.

Jennifer Anniston? Is she the one that was famous for her haircut?

  51. katyalia says:

I don’t understand the logic behind Ocean Eleven being ‘nothing outstanding’ and Ocean Thirteen listed under ‘you get the idea’. Ocean Thirteen wouldn’t even make sense without Ocean Eleven and Twelve. Kinda like that list.

Because Mr & Ms, outstanding or not, was during the marriage. And he was definitely not ‘with’ Angie during the filming at all, remember?

  52. sandy#1 says:

so handsome, i really don’t like the close up pics of anyone, but i will make an exception in brad’s case, i think he is gorgeous, but he seems humble and sensitive, caring, what a great combination, angelina is truly blessed.

  53. mln76 says:

@katyalia I like Ocean’s alot but it’s an ensemble piece it’s a fun remake that he breezed (or ate) his way through besides that during that time he only did the Mexican and Troy both of which are really bad movies-which support the idea that he was uninspired and unoriginal at that time. Before the marraige he did Fight Club, Kalifornia, True Romance, and 12 Monkeys (which got him an Oscar nod). Afterwards he’s done his most acclaimed work Babel, Jessie James (which is IMO his best performance), TOL,on and on. He’s been secure in himself enough to take the risks that he’s needed to build a filmography that’s going to last decades after the tabloid rabble dies down.

  54. katyalia says:

    mln76:

I totally agree with it being an ensemble piece, etc. My problem was with Ocean Thirteen being on the list and Ocean Eleven and Twelve being left out.

Using weak arguments weakens the whole argument, IMO.

  55. Chris says:

I have always thought Brad Pitt is extremely attractive, but I’ve never liked his beard much. Although it does look much better on this magazine cover than it did when it was longer, it always reminded me of a billy goat. Can’t understand why he hides his beautiful face with that thing.

  56. mln76 says:

@katyalia I get what you are saying however taking out O13 (which was more than likely contractually obligated) the Pitt filmography in the non-Aniston years is on par with many other mega A list actors of any era compared to the Aniston years in which his films kinda sucked. JMO though.

  57. jbethallen says:

The Sports Illustrated cover is alot better than what Brad Pitt actually looks like usually. He is looking very middle age these days. I am not impressed with his looks or personality at all anymore. So yesterdays news.

Cheyenne, what do you call a good movie? most of Pitts and Jolies have been bombs since they met. Brads last really good movie was Legends of the Fall. Why doesn’t he get offered the movies of Leo DiCaprio or Tom Hanks quality?

  58. neff says:

Still hot, and Brad could be an absolutely stunning 47 y.o. IF he got the shave and decent haircut that he so desperately needs. It’s too late for him to successfully rock the boho chic look.

I think that SI covers are best reserved for those actually involved in sports. Brad’s already on a billion other magazine covers. As for the photo itself, looks like they tried to make the green and gold of the A’s hat work with Brad’s greenish-gold eyes. Do not like the way it turned out. Looks like bad DMV pic.

  59. Phoenix says:

BeckyR, wtf??? Talk about *re-writing history*!! In fact, it was BRAD who made HER famous. Before SHE married Brad, she was a nobody and still would be if it weren’t for her marrying Brad to get a ‘leg’ into Hollywood!

  60. 輪圈 says:

It’s the best time to make a few plans for the long run and it’s time to be happy. I’ve read this put up and if I may just I desire to counsel you few fascinating issues or advice. Maybe you could write subsequent articles relating to this article. I wish to read more issues about it!
