Does Leonardo DiCaprio pull off the ‘J. Edgar’ transformation?

The trailer for Clint Eastwood’s new film is finally out. This is J. Edgar, the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring project about the J. Edgar Hoover years at the FBI. It’s a bio-pic, but I think the focus is more about morality and domestic spying and how Hoover made the FBI into the organization it is? Armie Hammer plays Hoover’s right-hand man and possible lover, and Dame Judi Dench stars as Hoover’s mom. Oh, and you might think that the redhead is just a budget Scarlett Johansson, but it’s actually Naomi Watts, styled to look like ScarJo for some reason:

My first thought was that Judi Dench owns this junk. I would love to see Clint Eastwood and Judi Dench, just chilling out and having a beer together, so I like the idea that Clint directed one of the great English actresses. And Judi and Leonardo look very nice together as mother and son, don’t they? I wonder if they got along. Leo has a thing about his own mom, so I suspect he was lovely and respectful of Judi, and I also suspect that Judi will probably be the “shoo-in” for all of the supporting actress awards. That seems to be Clint’s idea – look how prominently Judi figures into the trailer.

As for Leonardo… I think he pulls off the transformation into the older, grosser-looking J. Edgar rather well. I also think that Armie Hammer is going to be the eye-candy of this film, right? Leo is letting Armie be the “pretty one”.

Anyway… yes, this looks good. I’m very interested in seeing this film, but it’s not a fan-girl hysteria or anything.

I’m cool with Armie Hammer being the twinky hotness. Nooo prob.

I just can’t get it up for Leo.

  3. Bubulle says:

The movie looks boring, like it was only made to please the academy also DiCaprio seems like he’s playing dress up. Agree about Dench.

This trailer is not making me want to see this movie. I think the story should be fascinating so I’m going to assume that Clint Eastwood will do it justice and go see it.

  12. carrie says:

his accent is weird (like on/off) and he looks typical Leo Dicaprio but with make-up( older Hoover looks alike John Voight?)
    Dench and Hammer look interesting
    the cinematography looks great

Ok, not gonna watch the video now (I’ll wait til I’m at home), but I just wanted to say… Leo looks WAY better with brown eyes!

I was never a fan of Leo until I saw the movie The Departed. I missed the movies in the early part of his career but went back and saw them when I became a fan. Wasn’t big on Titanic but he is a good actor. I do quite like him. I think I’ll see this movie.

I do agree about the effed up accent though. Not too sure where J. Edgar was from so not too sure what type, if any, accent he should have had.

And I think Naomi Watts will be good. ScarJo look-alike or not.

You know what, I’d like for Leo to try a comedy. Or do a truly romantic movie, just for old times sake. Just do something different for once. To get away from movies were he’s always screaming in it or his wife/love interest dies/is dead.

Also, he has had practically the same hair style/ look in every movie he’s been in since Shutter Island. Now I’m not saying he has to go Johnny Depp level in the costume and hair area, but give the characters some individuality.

So this is going to be Leo’s big gay role? Gee and he started dating the famewhore Blake Lively this year. The same Blake Lively who is supposed to be a hetro-sexual man’s idea woman. The same Blake Lively who makes sure that each of her dates with Leo have a pap camera attacked. This from a guy who is usually low-key about his personal life. Coincidence?

Not sure but it’s helpful to have a CONTRARY image of you with a hot girl in every magazine while you play a gay man. Just in case the Academy doesn’t fully realize how good your acting is. I will bet money that Blake goes away after he bags his academy award and doesn’t need the showmance anymore. Oh I’m sure he is hitting that why not but it’s still just for the Academy Blake, wake up.

  18. Leo’s a good actor,he’ll be fine.And I LOVE Judi!!

  19. Turtle Dove says:

T.C. – Leo did a gay role already, Total Eclipse, and his Rimbaud was complicated, vulnerable, vicious and destructive.

Well…. I’m unenthusiastic about the trailer. It’s bland to say the least. I have to do some back research on J. Edgar and see if Leo does well in his portrayal. I know very little about the real man, so I’m open to posibilities.

I watched Hoffa again this summer and Jack Nicholson was amazing. This movie has stood the test of time and Nicholson’s portrayal is spot on. Wonder if Leo will fair as well…..

If furrowing your brow were all it to act, I guess he’d be really good.

In other words, he’s about as dull and overrated as they come.
