Salma Hayek covers Latina: “I was born to be a wife and a mother”

salma11

Salma Hayek got another November cover! I think these covers are all for Puss in Boots, where Salma has reteamed with Antonio Banderas, this time for voice work for the Puss spinoff (which I’m looking forward to – I think Puss is maybe Antonio’s greatest character ever). Salma already covered the new issue of Redbook, where she was discussing how she loves making her own money while being married to a billionaire. In this new Latina Magazine cover story, Salma is once again talking about her marriage, but this time it’s not all rah-rah-feminism-money stuff. This time, Salma makes it sound like she’s perfectly happy “just” being a wife and mother:

On waiting patiently to become a mother & wife: “To be your own woman, you have to question who you really are and what it is you really want – and you have to have a level of acceptance of what you can do. The things I expected of myself when I was 20 did not happen, or did not happen the way I imagined they would, and it’s okay. Let’s just take this one day at a time and do the best that I can and be grateful for the things I do have.”

On her husband François-Henri Pinault: “I found a man better than any man I could ever in my life imagine existed. He found me, actually. I wasn’t even looking.”

On having divine skin: “When I was 16, I looked 19. When I was 19, I looked 25. But I got stuck on 25 – thank God! – until I was 35. So that was good. But it’s also important to take care of your skin because if you’re not careful, one day you’ll wake up and a spider will have taken over your face and you’ll be full of lines.”

On cosmetic surgery: “I have no Botox. The thought of a needle coming to my forehead, it really gives me the heebie-jeebies. So I’d rather put on my creams. It’s fun, it smells good, and it’s relaxing. Am I opposed to doing it later? I don’t know. I want to see how far I can go.”

On launching her new beauty line: “At the time I wanted to do the beauty line I didn’t know how, but I never stopped trying to learn. It’s not that I said, ‘I’ve gotta do this no matter what.’ It was like, ‘I know how to act. I don’t know how to do this other thing, but I think I could.’ So I studied, I paid attention, I asked a lot of questions, I investigated each product. And then, in time, it came.”

On the busiest year of her career: “I’m 45, so it’s a miracle I’m working in the first place – especially because I’m not even here [stateside] chasing it. Nowadays I only work with friends or somebody I admire, or on something that is really special. Somehow, just by doing that, it’s the year that I worked the most in my life!”

On what’s next: “I’m in a very comfortable position because, [even] if I never worked again and am just a housewife and a mother, I’m happy. I really am. I was born to be a wife and a mother.”

[From Latina]

Do I even care enough to parse? “…If I never worked again and am JUST a housewife and a mother, I’m happy” (emphasis mine)… is that something that will upset people? The “just”? I personally don’t care, because I don’t think Salma means that housewives and mothers are somehow “less than” women who work outside of the home. I think this was an episode of The West Wing, right? Stockard Channing/Abby Bartlett said “just a wife and mother” and it was a political scandal during Pres. Bartlett’s re-election campaign?

As for her comments on Botox… do you believe her? Salma doesn’t have a frozen cat face, nor does she look puffy, waxy, filled-in or jacked. I kind of buy her “no Botox” claims, honestly. I think she takes really great care of her skin and she eats right, and doing THAT is so much better than getting tweaked and worked on. Now, if you told me she had a nose job, I wouldn’t balk.

  1. wahwahwah says:

She barely acts or gets good roles so she uses an excuse. Women like her see their only prupose in life marrying a rich guy and spend the millions on luxury goods.

  2. brin says:

She looks amazing (45?!)and I believe that she hasn’t had botox.

  3. Larissa says:

Well if she actually had to clean, do her own groceries, cooking, do the washing and ironing, and take care of her daughter fulltime then maybe she
could call herself a housewife. And if she didnt have botox then she has spent A LOT of money with other techniques and treatments / cosmetics, because it is just virtually impossible considering that she has been there out in the sun more than once.

  4. Tiffany S says:

more than the wife/mother and botox comments- what struck me was the way she describes francois-henri: ” “I found a man better than any man I could ever in my life imagine existed.”
salma, honey, i think the adjective you’re looking for isn’t “better”- it’s “richer.” you’re welcome.

i mean, isn’t this the guy who impregnated linda evangelista while he and salma were “on a break”? i guess the rich and gorgeous have more active sex lives than i do, but that really grosses me out and shows a lack of character/principles/morality. and this “i can do whatever i want” attitude isn’t a quality i’d want for my hubby or the father of my baby. just sayin’.

    (hops off soap box)

  5. gee says:

I was expecting some horror Garner-style mommy story, but this is nbd. I don’t think the “just” thing was bad.

  6. Victoria says:

    A. The risk of being “just” a mother and a housewife is the same if your husband is poor or rich. And it is a risk because you loose a part of yourself and it is not an activity that is socially appreciated, and sometimes is not even appreciated in ones home.
    B. If she does a line of creams I think I would believe more in her product (because she does not use Botox or cosmetic surgery) than in other famous people’s products like Cindy Crawford (she uses Botox) or any young one.

  7. N.D. says:

@Tiffany S: “isn’t this the guy who impregnated linda evangelista while he and salma were “on a break”?”

No, he isn’t. He’s the man who impregnanted Linda Evangelista before he even met and hooked up with Salma.

I don’t think it’s her products or some secret procedures, tbh, my bet is – she just has good genes. Because as she herself admitted her grandma has(had?) an amazing skin too.

  8. Kaboom says:

I was born to be a [billionaire’s] wife and mother [to his baby]. For the standard version you didn’t have to leave Mexico, honey.

  9. wahwahwah says:

N.D.: you are wrong. He impregnated Linda when he and Salma were on a short break and he didn’t tell her or at least didn’t publicly acknowledge the child.

    Salma married for the money.

  10. Liz says:

she bugs. reeks or entitled billionaire’s wife.

  11. Auds says:

She was born to be the wife of a billionaire!!! lol
Seriously though, I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when Linda Evangelista revealed that Salma’s husband was the father of her child and is seeking more child support.
I wonder how many designer trinkets Salma scored that day.

  12. Eleonor says:

    Nose jobs and implants.

  13. Kath & Kim says:

I don’t believe she’s had botox. She looks great. She did, however, have a nose job and one or two boob jobs.

  14. N.D. says:

@wahwahwah: He impregnated Linda around NY of 2006. He got up with Salma in early spring of 2006. Their first public appearance as a couple was in April of 2006. Those are facts. That often repeated “on a break” version came about because tabloid writers didn’t bother to check respective birth dates of two kids who are NOT the same age as they reported but a full year apart.

  15. Jules says:

I suppose this is the crap you believe when the acting jobs have dried up.

  16. Mikamoo says:

As if she hasn’t had botox… bs. NO she doesnt have “frozen face” but that doesnt mean that she didnt go to a good doc and just get a little bit.. she totally did something.

  17. ladybert62 says:

well yes now that you have landed a mucho rich guy, you can settle down and “just” be a housewife and mother – how nice for you.

So much for women’s lib, huh Selma!

  18. Lalala says:

I believe she hasn’t had Botox. I’m Latina and 45 and don’t have many wrinkles at all because my skin is olive toned and it was very oily when I was younger. Also, Salma isn’t dead skinny like so many other actresses her age and that helps keep your skin looking good.

  19. Samigirl says:

I definitely believe hasn’t had botox. Latina and African American women have all those great oils in their skin, and they age so much more gracefully than us plain ol’ white folk 🙂

  20. smh says:

    she looks great!

  21. Lindy says:

I agree with Larissa–if you’re sitting on your a$$ while spending your husband’s cash and occasionally saying hello to your kid while the nanny takes a quick break, you are not really doing the standard wife-and-mother routine. Born to be a wife and mom, huh? What is with all this weird, reactionary, motherhood-on-a-pedestal BS all these celebs are spouting? As if being a wife and a mother are the only things that are REALLY real, or REALLY give wonmen value? I’m a wife and a mother, and I love it. And I have a lot of other things I do and enjoy and value, all of which make me who I am. I am honestly getting sick of hearing this crap–esp. from women who probably do very little mothering themselves (without a host of nanny backup on call) and who probably never lift a finger to help run the household.

  22. Sasha says:

The “just” doesn’t offend me. The fact that she is barely on the same continent as her husband for more than a few weeks per year and claims to be a “wife” does, though.

eta: and yeah, he is the guy who had a baby with Linda Evangalista when he & Salma were “on a break.” Linda & Salma’s kids with him are the *same age.*

  23. Violet says:

“I found a man better than any man I could ever in my life imagine existed.”

He’s a cheater and a deadbeat dad, so I wonder what kind of bottomfeeders she usually hangers out with. Or did she simply mistakenly use the word “better” instead of “richer”? Because that would be more plausible.

As for the Botox, who knows. Seems to me most actresses start using it in their 30s, sometimes earlier. I certainly wuouldn’t put it past her to lie about it since this is the woman that claims her breasts are natural.

  24. Maggie says:

She is not opposed to needles in her forehead. My friend worked on her during a film as a facial rejuvenation acupuncturist which is honestly what I think she focuses on, alternative methods of youthful appearance. If you are born with the right genes, you don’t need much to stay youthful looking especially at 45. She also said Salma was incredibly gracious and kind. The man is wealthy, but she is a force to be reckoned with and I believe they might actually be really happy.

  25. Christine says:

She’s just so gorgeous. Of course she’s delusional, but I think that’s what happens when you are gorgeous and married to a billionaire. I still like her for breastfeeding that child that wasn’t hers though. Props to her on that forever.

  26. kaligula says:

She obviously committed numerous pious deeds in a past life to be so blessed with that level of hotness and natural beauty. A few more in this one & next time perhaps she can come back with some real acting talent, as well…. Ouch! Oh well. Really like her, though. She’s fun.

  27. SkyNet says:

What you haters don’t seem to realize is that she had a career in Mexico before she had one in the US. She is also the spokeswoman for several companies, and has her own businesses. She’s been making her own money for a long time. She doesn’t really need her husband’s money. As a Latina I can honestly say that it’s uncommon for us to get wrinkles until we’re in our late 40’s. My grandmother barely has any wrinkles and she’s 74. My mom doesn’t have any and she’s 46. Neither of them have had any work done. Oh and watch Desperado, From Dusk til Dawn, etc. Those are so her real boobs.

From what I’ve read on this site and a bunch of others, her husband and her had barely known each other when he got Linda pregnant. Knowing someone or dating them doesn’t mean a commitment. It’s perfectly logical that by the time they were in an actual relationship Linda found out she was pregnant. It does take a month or two to figure that out. As for him being a deadbeat dad, there are articles out that state that he had been paying child support, Linda just wanted more. I don’t know what their relationship was like, but if I was a billionaire, I wouldn’t jump at claiming a kid that someone I was dating said was mine until I had some proof.

  28. janie says:

major kudos to her after the breastfeeding incident. that’s putting your money where your mouth is.

does not strike me as the kind who needs to put up w a jerk for the money.
maybe she is just happy. good for her.

  29. CG says:

A couple years back she was at some event/red carpet thing and her face looked pretty jacked. But she did the celebrity standard-issue hair changeup so everyone was talking about that instead. So maybe she’s had no Botox but could have had like a brow lift or something.

  30. jh says:

She was rich even before she got to America. I don’t remember if she comes from jewish or arab descent, but I do know that her family always had shit loads of money, and she was also a famous actress in Mexico. Not to her husband’s level but she was always rich. and she became a millionaire on her own way before she even met him.

  31. Stacia says:

“I found a man better than any man I could ever in my life imagine existed. He found me, actually. I wasn’t even looking.”

Then looked for, found and impregnated Linda Evangelista during their marriage. How great can he be?

  32. SandraT says:

Why some people say that she’s not working anymore, she’s shooting for Savages, directed by Oliver Stone, she was in the box office hit, Grown Ups, she’ll be in Here Comes the Boom next year with Kevin James, and she’s talking with Johnny Depp about him playing Pancho Villa and her, his wife. So what’s this “acting jobs have dried up” non sense.

  33. Bernie says:

I get that it’s easy to hate on rich people. I get it. But seriously, how the heck do we know that she married just for money. Live and let live.

  34. Ella says:

i believe her on the botox. I am an aesthetician and the reality is if you start taking precautions and using the right products at a young age, you can age beautifully. Your genes and ethnic background also play a part in your aging process. She has Lebanese and a hispanic background, good chance she is naturally tanned, you can tan and not age significantly. My mother is 52 and has no wrinkles, tiny laugh lines around the eyes and a few forehead lines. She looks better than people I know who are 40…she started using anti aging creams at 18. Salma doesn’t have the botox/plastic surgery look.

  35. JaneWonderfalls says:

    Here we go again… “smdh”

  36. Naomi says:

Oh please. She married a billionaire.

When I have a kid, Im going to utter the most outrageous “Look at me! Im a mom!” statement and twitter it. Motherhood now is nothing but competition. Kids are now just objects for parents to use to prove their worthiness, and the kids get lost or entitled (ahem Suri) in the process.

  37. Tiffany S says:

    LOL @Violet- we share a brain!! 🙂

  38. Elaine says:

Everyone should boycott Pinault’s companies, stop watching his French soccer team and refuse to buy stock in all of his companies. Hayek’s products (including her movies and television shows)should also be boycotted until she gets divorced from this jerk. These are great ways to teach Pinault not to be a deadbeat dad and it will teach Hayek that you don’t marry deadbeat dads.
