Matthew McConaughey grew that beard for a movie

Matthew McConaughey is starring in the upcoming film “We Are Marshall,” about a coach who took over the Huntington, West Virginia Marshall University football team in 1971 after a plane crash killed most of the players. He says he read the script and was touched by it, and knew that he wanted to be involved with the film:

“There’s two scripts I’ve read in my career — I’ve made 37 films — that as soon as I finished the last page, I said, ‘I’m in, no matter what,'” McConaughey said Wednesday.

He named “We Are Marshall” and his first film, 1993’s “Dazed and Confused.”

“I finished the script and I couldn’t get it off my mind,” he said of “We Are Marshall.” “I had emotions that I haven’t had in a while. I didn’t know this story.”

McConaughey and “We are Marshall” director McG, known for “The OC,” attended a game last week between Marshall and Central Florida’s Golden Knights. They walked out to the stadium with the players, and screened a clip from the film at halftime. Footage from the event may show up on “Oprah,” as McConaughey also taped an episode of the talkshow to promote the movie. Unfortunately Marshall lost to The Golden Knights in an upset with less than 7 seconds to go, 23-22.

A lot of people are saying that Matthew McConaughey has lost his sex appeal since he grew an unkempt beard. I say that his extreme six pack cancels it out. A reporter from iVillage says he’s met him twice and he didn’t smell either time despite claiming he doesn’t wear deodorant. He also said that McConaughey was incredibly nice, and told him that he grew the beard for his upcoming performance in “Fool’s Gold” with Kate Hudson:

Before anyone asks, yes, he still has the dreaded beard. I asked him what was up with it – was it for a movie… or did his barber go MIA. He told me it’s for his next movie, Fool’s Gold, which he begins shooting Down Under with Kate Hudson any minute now. Speaking of Fool’s, he told me a little about it and ended by saying: “I hope I get the treasure and the girl…”

Back to Matthew, he was as nice as can be. He was literally running all over the place – meeting fans, doing interviews, posing for photos, guest coaching, introducing a clip from the movie – so he was tres busy. And to answer another question I know you’re thinking – no, he didn’t smell despite the fact that he says he doesn’t wear deodorant. And that whole no deodorant thing is misleading anyway. He says he doesn’t wear it, but he wears a homemade concoction – which could be like Shower to Shower or another deodorant substitute and cologne. Anyway, I’ve met him twice now and he hasn’t smelled either time, so I think that rumor just ain’t true.

Let’s hope that Matt only sports the beard for the first part of the film, or female fans aren’t going to be too keen to see it.

Here are pictures of Matt at the game on 10/4 and at LAX on 10/7. Love the sandals. [via]
