Sofia Vergara’s former publicist pushed for her to get a bust reduction

Between Sofia Vergara’s statements that she loves looking like a transvestite and her own apparent obsession with her ridiculously huge boobs, I’m beginning to wonder whether or not she’s got anything else to add to the cultural dialogue. Sofia sat down with Health Magazine to promote both Happy Feet Two and New Year’s Eve, and as usual, most of the conversation centers around her fabulous bod. Oh, and she actually discusses a little something else too:

On Body Image: “In Latin America we do learn to be more comfortable with our bodies. Women are not shy to be in a bathing suit, in a G-string. But I also did a TV commercial for Pepsi when I was 17 on the beach in a bathing suit. And after that, everybody was like, ‘Oh my god, that body.’ And you know, you start to feel a little bit more confident if you have people thinking that you’re so fabulous!

“When I moved to America, I was more voluptuous, and I felt a little different. And one time, years ago, I remember my publicist [at the time] told me, ‘I think you should just reduce your boobs because nobody’s going to take you seriously here.’ My mother almost had a heart attack. She was like, ‘God is going to punish you! You can’t cut your boobs!’ I don’t regret not doing it, because now it’s become a big part of Gloria.”

On Plastic Surgery: “I’m not against it at all. But I think that you should go into it more thinking that you want to look beautiful than trying to look young. Because I don’t really think that plastic surgery can make you look young. It can make you look prettier, but if you go with the mentality of being young, I think that’s where accidents can happen.”

On Being Stereotyped: “I don’t mind it. I mean, it is the reality. I am a Latin woman: I’m voluptuous, I’m loud, I’m exactly what a Latin woman is. I mean, what am I going to go against it? No. I don’t think there’s anything bad in being a Latin woman. What is it? That we are loud, that we are passionate, that we are voluptuous? I prefer to be called that than, ‘You’re boring; you have a flat ass!'”

On Her Biggest Health Regret: “You know what I wish? My face is so much better, because I’ve been putting sunblock since I was young on my face. Nobody ever told me that I needed to put it in my decolletage! And so it is more sun-damaged than my face. It wouldn’t have been difficult to put a little bit there.”

On Beating Thyroid Cancer In 2000: “It changes your priorities. It’s a good thing when it comes out with a happy ending because it does make you appreciate things more. But, you know, you live your life as healthy as you can. I was twentysomething and I had never smoked, I hadn’t eaten red meat in years, so why did I have a cancer? No one knows.”

[From Health]

Maybe beating cancer at such a young age has something to do with Sofia’s overwhelmingly positive attitude? I do like her and think she’s pretty funny on “Modern Family,” but man, all this talk of her amazing bod gets a bit old at times. Although surviving cancer gives her certain bragging rights, she might want to evolve her shtick a bit at some point. Also, she mentions in the interview that she’s a natural blonde, which is something that I would’ve never guessed.

I love her! She looks great and she’s really very funny on Modern Family. I don’t think she talks about her looks any more than the rest of them – plus, if she was talking about “acting” instead, I’m sure she’d get called out for that! It’s nice to see a sex symbol that isn’t a kid or a waif………

  2. Samigirl says:

She’s my husband’s “hall pass” (like he’d have the balls to take it, but anyways). She’s stunning. If my body looked *almost* like hers, I’d talk about it 24/7. And probably be a stripper. I love her. And the cancer thing. That’s incredible. Makes me love her even more.

  3. Jackie says:

i don’t watch the show (tried once – found it submental), but have seen her interviewed a few times and i find her completely obnoxious. her schtick gets old after 3 minutes.

  4. ashley says:

I don’t think she leads the way with her body, but it’s what she’s known for and it’s why she’s getting booked for these interviews. When they ask, she answers.

  5. Kelly says:

Loud and voluptuous? That’s what a Latin woman is? In that case I feel sorry for all those Latin women like Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor; Dolores Huerta, founder of United Farm Workers; and artist Frida Kahlo. As, apparently, as Latin women they just don’t measure up.

  6. constance says:

I don’t care for her. I don’t watch that channel to even try Modern Family but I have seen her obnoxious commercials. (Good word @Jackie)

Smoking and red meat are the only causes to cancer? – OY VEY! Don’t say things like that honey, it makes you look stupid.

I think it’s funny they have her on a “family” show considering all the mostly nude images she has been selling for years. It’s like Carmen Electra playing someone’s sweet, humble mother on a prime time network drama. LOLable

  7. Franny says:

Constance, as you obviously have not seen Modern Family, you wouldn’t know that its not really considered a “family show”. She plays the trophy wife to an older man. She doesn’t play sweet or humble either.

I don’t think she was implying that only smoking and eating red meat cause cancer, but they have been shown to increase your risk. Don’t tear people down for wondering why they got cancer honey, it makes you look like a cold hearted bitch.

anyway, I like her, I think she’s fun, and she does have an amazing bod.

  8. BabyCakes says:

As a Latin woman myself I can tell you her stereotypes are just not true. She’s got a great body but that’s it.

  9. Kikadee says:

Any woman who uses the word decolletage is alright in my book.

  10. INeedANap says:

I think she’s great! And the talk about her bod — Christina Hendricks gets the same crap, that’s all the interviewers want to talk about. Sofia doesn’t take herself seriously, works hard, and has a good time. Gotta love er.

  11. Happy21 says:

I love her and do find her talk of her huge boobs a little tiring at times. She is beautiful and she knows it.

It kinda reminds me of why we wonder why all Lea Michele talks about is not getting a nose job – – the only thing that interviewers want to ask about, in my opinion.

  12. Kiki says:

I’m from Brazil and come from an Italian family – we’re as loud and passionate and warm as you can imagine. But, there’s SO MUCH more. Why not show what’s underneath? I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Sofia being proud of who she is, or where she’s from, but the idea that that’s all there is to it is the root of all stereotypes. Bad choice of words.

  13. MissVJJ says:

I’m latin, of Honduran descent. I’m definitely not loud. Not all latinas are voluptuous. I know of size 00 stick straight/thin latin women. And Ive got average curves. Enough booty to look great in jeans.. And my breasts are no longer freakishly huge, thanks to surgery 🙂

  14. alma says:

she’s been around for years in the Latin community. I’m happy to see that she has had a lot of work. She’s awesome and she knows it.

I’m latina and wish i had that body though, i’m flat chested and have no butt :/ I got robbed!

  15. Orange Cone says:

@samgirl- LOL about hubby not having the balls!

for my boyfriend, his “pass” is Elizabeth Rohm and Kalita Smith…but he wouldnt have the kiwis to do it either lol

Hoping I look like Ms. Sofia when I’m older… umm, actually, I wished I look like that now!

  16. Starla says:

I know what she’s saying about Latin women. No, not all are like that (I’m half Latina BTW. But there are women like that and she’s getting stereotyped. Listen, she IS loud, she IS curvy, she DOES have a strong accent, and she doesn’t mind. Do you think she has plans to really push the envelope of her abilities soon? I doubt it, but she’s happy with that.

As for the cancer thing, I had thyroid cancer at 23 (I’m 25 now). Cancer is always a scary thing, but the majority of people who have thyroid cancer tend to be stage 1 and 2. It’s the slowest growing cancer and also has one of the highest (if not the highest) survival rate. Thyroid cancer rates are growing and I think it may have something to do with environment/genetics than her health habits. Good for her for talking openly about it and remaining positive though.

  17. Shannon says:

She’s mentioned being a natural blonde before, and how the blonde hair combined with the boobs meant she couldn’t find any work. As soon as she went darker, she looked more “Latina” and suddenly everyone wanted to hire her for those roles, so she hasn’t gone back to blonde since. I think it’s kind of a sad commentary on how Americans view Latina women. You can’t be a Latina if you’re blonde? I mean hello, Shakira anyone??

  18. okeydokey says:

    she irritates me.

  19. Camille says:

Doesn’t this chick have anything else to talk about except her boobs and her hair colour?

  20. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

@19: I used to think so, now I know better. She’s going Hendricks (Sofia opts to cover ’em up more often).

Are we getting more repetitive as a species?

  21. ataylor says:

As someone who has followed her career for more than 16-17 years Shakira was a slightly curvy (yes, at times she was a bit on the more robust side) brunette pop star, up until 10 years ago when she decided she wanted IN to the American Music Industry. When she was a brunette (or sometimes redhead) no one in the industry gave her the time of day except for the Estefans. NO ONE. Then, on Gloria’s recommendation she lost weight, went blond and “played up” her Arabic roots a bit and all of a sudden, she’s everywhere.

No one payed attention to her when she was a “Latina” looking pop star. Stereotypes happen. Both Shakira and Sofia were SMART to adjust their looks to match the stereotype that benefitted them the most. Shakira by going blond and skinny, Sofia for going brunette and playing up the curves.

What everyone else in the Entertainment Industry forgets, is that “Latina” comes in many different looks and races. Funny thing is, there IS no stereotype of the “Latina look” in Latin America, just here in the US.

  22. wonderwoman21 says:

The whole ‘latinas have curves’ is sooo annoying! It’s a stereotype because it’s not true. I’m Latina and I’m not voluptuous, very thin actually.

  23. DeeVine says:

Can she have an interview where she doesn’t talk about how hot her body is?

Yes, you love yourself, we get it. Woe is the rest of us who are not voluptous.

  24. coffeeisgood says:

Yeah we get it. You have big boobs and everyone here in america has only tried to put you down because of it. It’s the same exact thing she has said in other interviews.
The only way people wouldn’t take you seriously if you had a really curvy body, is if you were letting your curves hang out all over the place.
