Catherine Zeta-Jones, old school glam in a black sequin gown: lovely or bland?

Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas had a date night last night at a charity event to honor Michael’s dad, Kirk Douglas. Kirk is still kicking at 94, and from the looks of this photo below I might say he’s still checking out his daughter in-laws tatas, but he’s just hunched over and seems to be looking at Michael. It’s a funny photo either way.

Zeta-Jones wore this plunging long black v-neck sequin gown, which is similar in style to other dresses she’s worn to events this year. She loves long, elegant gowns and this look works well for her.

Here’s more on the event:

Catherine Zeta Jones turned on the charm tonight as she brought a splash of glamour to a charity gala in New York.

The 42-year-old actress looked immaculate in a form-fitting black gown as she took to the red carpet with husband Michael Douglas, 67, and his father Kirk, 94.

The trio were out in force for the Children At Heart Gala Dinner, hosted by the Children of Chernobyl (CCOC) charity.

Kirk was honoured at the event – and presented with an award by his son Michael, who is in recovery after battling throat cancer last year.
Actresses Dakota and Elle Fanning were also honoured in recognition of their support for the charity.

Elle, 13, also stepped into the spotlight at the event, posing on the red carpet with Michael and Catherine in an elegant pink dress.

[From The Daily Mail]

Elle Fanning looks super cute here, doesn’t she? I love that pink dress on her.

Both Catherine and Michael battled medical issues recently. Michael was diagnosed with stage four throat cancer last year, and announced that he was cancer free this January after undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. Catherine sought treatment for bipolar disorder this spring, going public with her struggle and telling People magazine thatThere is no need to suffer silently and there is no shame in seeking help.” Both of them look great here, and like they’re doing well. It’s so nice to see them out together, especially with Kirk! Kirk’s wife of 57 years, Anne Buydens, was also by his side at the event.

It’s not the most exciting dress in the world, but the event wasn’t about her. I think the dress is understated and elegant and she looks great in it.

  2. heatheradair says:

Dude, she just NEVER looks bad.

She’s aging really well (looks SO much less tweaked than most ladies these days) and she always manages to seem…..REGAL.

Knows what works on her and sticks with it.

  3. ShanKat says:

This is a great charity. Everyone looks fabulous! The mens’ suits are beautiful, and CZJ is really radiant.

  4. Nanea says:

For how many years has CZJ been 42 now?

She’s looking good though, and Elle’s a cutie.

  5. Dreamyk says:

Mr. & Mrs. Kirk Douglas are poster children for never, ever, ever having plastic surgery. They look like something out of a horror movie.

    • kel says:

That was what I thought looking at the picture. Kirk doesn’t even look like himself. Age alone doesn’t do that. Catherine is always classy and beautiful and doesn’t need to change a thing.

    • bluhare says:

Agreed. If his name hadn’t been mentioned I wouldn’t have known it’s him.

Also, when the Natalie Wood story resurfaced, some of her photos really reminded me of CZJ.

    • L says:

      1) He’s 94. People look alot different at 94.
      2) He had a very severe stroke a few years back. That can also seriously alter someone’s looks. Esp as he’s said he had to relearn how to talk since the muscles of one side of his face barely work.

    • Sassy says:

The seniors, Kirk and Ann, look like they just crawled out of the crypt. This what happens when you have plastic surgery. The face doesn’t age naturally, it warps accordingly. The sags and bags are not natural. Imagine all the Hollywood types with the plumped up lips and Restayline and botox as they age. Not a pretty thought.

  6. Franny says:

It looks like her buscuits are exploding glitter.

    I kind of like it?

  7. Jeanette says:

I wish she would do something different with her hair..shes such a beautful woman, and im sure her hair is equally beautiful as well…but we never see it! Maybe like a looser up do or something..I know having your long hair down is a pain in the ass..plus im sure its hot as hell in all that light.

  8. Cheyenne says:

Elegant and understated and she is wearing the hell out of it. She knows what looks good on her.

    • Scout says:

I agree – she is always classy and elegant! Never cheap, that I have seen. She pulls it all off without looking as if she is even trying~!

  9. Ell says:

People need to stop with the age. She is 42. Her first success came in ‘The Darling Buds of May’ in the UK and if you check the timeline it would be impossible for her to be older than 42.

She’s looks classy in these pics and Michael looks fantastic, he’s come through his treatment well, good for him.

    • Mairead says:

True. The birth registry listing for October, November and December 1969 for England and Wales is available to anyone to see on ancestry.co.uk and ancestry.com, (1st column, 17th name down, registered in Swansea). It shows that she was registered as Catherine Zeta Jones, mother’s maiden name being Fair, in 1969.

The only other Catherine Jones registered in Wales whose mother’s maiden name is Fair is back in the 19th century – although ancestry’s database can be glitchy.

      • Ell says:

        Nice work Mairead.

I’ve recently joined ancestry.co.uk – it’s brilliant place for family records and resources.

      • Mairead says:

No probs Ell. I always thought she was a couple of years older than she said too so I did a bit of digging. I do some genealology as part of my job so it only took a couple of minutes. I do have a screenshot of the page, but I’ve not bothered to put it up here as the naysayers are generally lazy dolts who point to an old blind item as proof, despite inconsistencies.

On ancestry, it’s expensive, but if you can afford it go for the international or worldwide membership. They’re adding more and more records all the time. The database is way better than when I joined, but you need to go at it laterally sometimes.

      • Ell says:

Mairead, sounds like a cool job. Love to contact you re my research but not the ideal place to leave personal details.

    • murt says:

ya true – her age is obvious because she was a child star.

      She looks absolutely gorgeous here.

  10. duncecap says:

CZJ’s eye color has always fascinated me.

  11. G says:

    She looks great.

BTW I’m getting weary of the idea that every celebrity must be “selling” some designer items or “move fashion forward” with every public appearance. Looking good is it’s own reward.

  12. Sisi says:

    wow she looks great

Does she have a new make-up stylist? Cause it’s a great job

  13. Angie says:

    Gorgeous!

  14. Laughing Librarian says:

I’m sure propping up Michael’s mom and dad was the focus here. Have you ever seen an old person fall? It’s horrible, and a real party closer.
She was probably so stressed out before she went to this event. In my imaginary, bipolar-2 (yes, me too), non-Hollywood world, she threw on what was in the closet (which I would happily take off her hands..) and blew out the door with the hubby.
But I know she was styled and prepped. She looks great-classic.

  15. Orange Cone says:

did Elle Fanning come onto the scene before, during, or after Dakota (became famous)?

    • MJ says:

Much later – Elle is only 13 or 14, and Dakota is 17 or 18.

    • Trek Girl says:

I’m not completely sure what you mean by “come onto the scene”, but Elle’s first project, at least according to IMDB, was “I Am Sam” as two-year-old “Lucy”.

Dakota has been a celebrity for a longer time and has more projects under her belt, but it looks like Elle and Dakota started acting in movies and TV shows at nearly the same time, Dakota starting about one year before Elle.

  16. ruby says:

She looks very elegant and yes I agree, almost regal (her very good posture must help). I like all the elements taken separately too : the hair, the makeup, the earrings, the dress, the bag… Good for her.

  17. lucy2 says:

    She looks lovely.

  18. rundee says:

She´s the best proof how really ugly backgrounds make you look better:
She has the same expression on every foto of the evening and looks as frozen as they come, but still everyone here thinks she´s natural.

Michael is 25 years older than her and he looks so so so bad beside her. I really hope she has a poolboy to bang or at least Michael likes it with the lights out… Poor girl.

  19. Mairead says:

I think the dress is quite safe and classic, but CZJ pulls it off. I’m not mad about the hair, I wish she wouldn’t wear it pulled back like that so often.

And isn’t Elle Fanning an adorable little thing? She was luminous in that Super 8 film she was in.

  20. Sally says:

She looks elegant and classy and that irst photo is hilarious!

  21. lakemom says:

No matter how much plastic surgery Kirk has had, he still looks like a dirty old man. If the rumors are true about what Kirk did to Natalie Wood, I hope Elle and CZJ kept their distance.

  22. gab says:

I think they all look great!

  23. Camille says:

Elle looks adorable, I love that she is dressed appropriately for her age.

    Catherine looks lovely.

  24. RobN says:

They both look elegant and, most importantly, appropriate.

  25. spinner says:

CZJ had a ton of plastic surgery early on. She is practically unrecognizable in her pre-surgery pics.

    • Euphorima says:

She looks almost the same in those pics….not seeing a lot of plastic surgery there….ok, maybe imbeing biased because i like her so much.

    • murt says:

She looks the same to me but older? She has the same hooded eyes, nose and lips.

      • DrM says:

I agree she looks much the same to me as well…she’s lost weight and the tan but that is about it…maybe a bit of tweaking here and there but nothing major…and I’m not a fan…so no bias in evidence! LOL

    • RobN says:

I don’t see that much difference, certainly nothing that can’t be explained by being 20 lbs. lighter and doing something about that 90’s hair.

  26. Kim says:

Kirk and his wife are perfect examples of why people should let themselves age somewhat naturally. Bad, bad cosmetic surgery. Kind of sad that at age 94 he is still that vain.

    • Nanea says:

As someone further up mentioned, Kirk has had a severe stroke, and part of his face is still paralyzed and will remain so, and he sometimes has difficulties talking.

  27. Turtle Dove says:

CZJ is timelessly gorgeous. One of the few true beauties in a town full of reality show woofers.

  28. Ranga says:

I really like Cath and Kirk, I wish the dress was a colour is all, like a midnight blue, its pretty though.

  29. danielle says:

I think CZJ is one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood, but at the same time, I’ve always thought she looked older than her stated age, but I’m not sure why – just the sophistication, maybe? It’s not wrinkles or anything. If people here have checked it out (thanks!) I’ll believe it!

  30. Diane says:

Catherine is gorgeous and classy, no matter what she wears! Her father-in-law? An old lech.

  31. Snowpea says:

    Gosh Hollywood is HILARIOUS!

Even though I love the fact that Mr and Mrs Douglas are still married, they’re faces are like something out of a horror movie. Strokes aside, I can see the way his skin is unnaturally stretched that that aint a stroke side effect.

Only in Hollyweird do nonagenarians still give a rats’ what they look like.

Me? I plan on ageing disgracefully. I’m 36 and feel like Ive spent the last twenty years on a diet. I can’t wait till I’m 70 and I can lie around watching movies, eating big bowls of strawberries and whipped cream, cracking open a bottle of champagne at noon and flitting shamelessly with young men ; )

  32. Mourning the Death of Music says:

    Catherine looks absolutely stunning.

  33. Andie B says:

Catherine and Michael both look great! Kirk doesn’t look so flash, but he’s 94 and still here, so good for him. His wife’s face disturbs me. It’s just not right, even if she is 90 years old.

  34. Violet says:

Michael has really aged; he looks old enough to be her grandfather.

    • Cheyenne says:

What an incredibly shallow comment. He’s a cancer survivor. All that chemo and radiation take a toll. He looks damn good, considering what he’s been through.

      • Violet says:

Cheyenne, you may not know this but he’s still a smoker. It’s hard for me to feel much sympathy for the man, given he’s willfully risking his recovery — and aging himself in the bargain — by refusing to give up the cancer sticks.

  35. Catherine says:

I love Catherine. She never looks bad to me.

  36. Jaxx says:

Celebitchy! I love your new comment features! Thanks!
