Britney Spears on her greatest challenge: “Trying to get up & go work out”

Britney Spears is right on the cusp of turning 30-years-old; to be precise, she will do so in two weeks. In some respects, Britney still seems really young at heart, but she’s also been through so much in the past several years that it’s difficult to believe that she’s not yet 30. And in that vein of thought, Britney recently sat down with UK’s Stylist publication to discuss both her Femme Fatale tour and her latest perfume, which will probably be just as successful as all of her other fragrances. Honestly though, I have to wonder … exactly who buys these perfumes? Although I do adore Britney, there has been absolutely no moment in time when I’ve decided that it would be a great idea to smell like her. Sure, she claims to shower twice a day, but I’m not buying it. Just saying.

At any rate, Britney’s interview with Stylist (during which the interviewer notes that the pop star was “surrounded by a few close confidants“) isn’t so much illuminating in regard to new information as the impression that Brit has very much been looking inward lately. If her words are to be trusted, then Britney is attempting to find happiness within herself before she goes looking for external gratification. This is a good thing, right?

On Her Biggest Challenge: “Trying to get up and go work out in the morning. I haven’t worked out in, like, two weeks. Sometimes it’s hard to be motivated. But once you get up and do it you feel like you’ve conquered the world.”

On Her Favorite Foods: “Chocolate. Definitely chocolate. A lot of chocolate. I love Scores in the States, with the caramel in the middle, and every once in a while if I’m really hungry then a Snickers bar is good. And M&Ms are great, Hershey’s Whoppers are great, Raisinettes… Twixes are great too. And the new Hershey’s Cookies & Cream, too.”

On Being A Musician In 2011: “Well, it’s really cool because there are so many new, up-and-coming artists to look at and be inspired by. For me, I think it’s great to have a little competition because I feel it inspires us [Team Britney] and makes us want to do better. There are so many soulful singers, even the ones coming from London, like Adele and Jessie J, who are just amazing. It feels like a really cool time to be making music now. In the beginning obviously I was very young and I didn’t know the ins and outs of things; I was very instinctive in what I wanted to do, and I was very vocal with my input on things. I think as the years have gone by, and as I’ve evolved as an artist, I’ve put even more into my career, and after that amount of time you start to know exactly what you want. You feel a little bit more in your skin, in terms of who you are. And that just feels really nice.”

On What She’s Reading:The Mastery Of Love [sub-titled A Practical Guide To The Art Of Relationship by Don Miguel Ruiz]. It’s basically an analysis of love and what it means to love. It goes through all the different aspects of love. Who you are as a person, knowing yourself before you even attempt to love anyone else’ that sort of thing. It’s really well-written and thought-provoking. It’s not so much about learning something; it’s one of those things where you already know this stuff, but it’s good to instil it in yourself again.”

On The Meaning Of Success: “For me, success is a state of mind. I feel like success isn’t about conquering something, it’s being happy with who you are.”

On Fame: “Well, in some situations I’d love to be able to, y’know, put a disguise on and go to a restaurant and not be noticed. But actually it’s been pretty cool on this tour, there haven’t been that many paparazzi and I’ve been able to get out with my children and go and see a lot of things.”

On Her Dream Vacation: “It would be with my children of course, and my boyfriend Jason [Trawick, also Britney’s agent]. and really that’s it. We’d probably just go skiing somewhere really beautiful and have hot chocolate, in a cabin…”

On Ryan Gosling, Her Former “Mickey Mouse Club” Colleague: “I’m a huge fan; I think he’s amazing. I think he’s a wonderful little actor. He definitely has that ‘something’ on film; on camera, which is really cool. So I’m very happy for him.”

[From Stylist.co.uk]

While there are several points worth noting here, I think the most obvious point to be made is that this interview seems (on its surface, anyway) to be far less scripted than most of Britney’s recent media interactions. She seems really candid with these answers and like she’s really buried herself in a lot of self-help books and techniques of late. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course, for Britney also comes off as far less medicated with these answers than we’ve grown accustomed to in the aftermath of her much publicized 2007 breakdown.

Also, it’s rather refreshing that Britney has embraced the notion of competition from up-and-coming pop stars. This attitude arrives in sharp contrast to one Christina Aguilera, who clearly expresses distain for all newcomers, including Lady Gaga, who Xtina thinks is copying her. Naturally, Brit is still flying (relatively) high, and Xtina is currently floundering as an “artist.” A lesson exists in there somewhere.

I don’t think you can say someone is really becoming introspective when their answer to the question “What’s your biggest challenge” is “working out.”

“Stayin’ skinny, yall. It’s my Everest.”

    • susannej says:

Come on – she is a popstar. If you are searching for enlightment ask the dalai lama or the leader of your favorite school / cult / church. Her job is to entertain us. Which she does. Pretty well. Even regarding gossip-wise..

    • S says:

I feel like it’s also an “I’m just like you” thing – I mean, there are a LOT of us who get up and think, ugh I don’t want to go to the gym. But she’s right, once you do it, you feel great.

I’m not saying this isn’t a ‘dishonest’ answer per say, but it definitely makes her relatable.

    • WillyNilly says:

I don’t think it intentional to relate to people (Brit is not that smart, sorry), I think in her very controlled environment that it truly is her biggest challenge.

      • PiperB says:

She’s smart enough to be a lot richer than we all are. People can argue her talent as far as singing but she can move and she is gorgeous. Wish I was as dumb and rich as her.

    • Lairen says:

Well, one of my biggest challenges is working out, but it’s not because I want to ‘stay skinny’ – it’s because I want to try and be healthy.

  2. bea says:

She’s not fat, but yet she manages to look frumpy no matter what she’s wearing. She really needs someone to dress her 24/7

    • anyhoo says:

I know! I wish she (or her team) would stop dressing her in lingerie! Give the girl some clothes…

      • WillyNilly says:

Cosign! I don’t care how fit you are but at a certain age…you should NOT be wearing lingerie on stage (I’m also looking at YOU, Cher…even though I love you dearly).

      • StraightfromA says:

I co-sign to a 1-0-0 percent. I was just thinking the same thing. She is always wearing a bodysuit and heels! It’s kind a gross. I feel like she is her handler’s little trick pony and they fire her up to make her perform even though she’s not right. i say this with all due respect to her- she should be recovering quietly. I have deep sympathies for someone who has had a mental break down.

  3. becky says:

I dont wear perfume, but when her first one was released everyone said it was great and it sold like crazy.
Britney’s endless list of sweets cracked me up!

    • keri says:

Shockingly, her “Curious” perfume DID smell good. I actually received the most compliments on it over any perfume when I wore it. However it was cheap, and had a short shelf life before it reeked of alcohol. Ironic?

    • Emily says:

I’ve had two of her perfumes, Fantasy and Believe, and liked them both. An ex of mine had Midnight Fantasy which was nice too. They’re quite young and girly, but so yummy.

They don’t compare to the Spice Girls Impulse though.

  4. tripmom says:

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I agree with Britney Spears. It IS really hard to get myself to work out sometimes. It sucks.

  5. Silk Spectre says:

I’m guilty of buying celeb-perfums – from C. Aguilera & Naomi Campbell. Not because they are from them just b/c they smell nice.

I love my Armani perfume but always switch between that and the celeb ones because your sense get’s so used to the smell.

    • hatsumomo says:

Ive never really bought celebrity perfumes, they all tend to have an over-powering cloying smell of cotton candy. And I cant do florals either. The one celebrity perfume Ive ever bought was the Kiss Her perfume by KISS. Its not that I like KISS, but it has a “low” scent kinda like a musk.

  6. Ruth says:

She sounds a lot healthier. Much less medicated and so much more normal. Im not a huge brit fan but its nice to have a case where someone can have a hugely publicised breakdown yet still be able to recover and still be a star. Too many celebrities get sick and cant get back from that.

  7. susannej says:

Not to be bitchy, but her comment on Ryan Gosling “I think he’s a wonderful little actor” sounds a little bit strange. I mean it is nice yes – but that’s how I would talk about my little brother. When he is trying really hard. And sooo cute!

    • Reece says:

Maybe she does think of him in a brotherly way…they were in Mickey Mouse Club together. Brit, Ryan, Justin, Xtina were all in the same MMC class.

  8. Jenn says:

I really like her, despite her past mistakes and poor choices. I think she’s paid for the bad choices and really tried to grow up and be a good parent and person. I just get that vibe from her. You can’t fake genuine sweetness and she doesn’t play the victim card, ever. I like that she talks a lot about her sons and seems like a really involved parent, as opposed to Xtina who is an insecure mess who barely talks about or pays attention to her child. I’m not a fan of pop music, but there’s just something really cool about Britney. And it comes through every time. She’s a really good entertainer.

  9. Jackie says:

i really wish she would address and/or speak about her mental health issues. it’s always the big elephant in the room.

is she DID or bipolar??? i understand it is her private business and maybe she will talk about it when she is ready, but she could use this opportunity to help break the stigma of mental illness.

maybe when she is older and more mature.

    • anyhoo says:

Maybe she is not allowed to talk/address it?

Even though the interview sounds more candid, they do note she had a team around her. Plus, she’ll forever be under her father’s conservatorship (sp?) and may never be able to do or say exactly what she wants, unless they can make more money off her.

  10. serena says:

I really wish her the best.

  11. Celebasshat says:

I wish brit all d best and i don’t think it’s anyone’s business if she want to talk about her health issue or not . When she feel the need to, she will and if she didn’t it’s her choice so deal with it

  12. ShanKat says:

Love love love her list of candy.

I love seeing her taking care of herself. Bipolar or simply child star, she deserves to enjoy everything she’s worked so hard for.

  13. Lisa says:

Pardon me…while I run to the corner store and load up on EVERYTHING ON HER LIST!!! I mean, me and girlfriend could HANG…because she KNOWS WHAT SHE LIKES!!! I think my girl Gwinnie would DIE before she ingested ANY of Brit’s faves!!! LOL!!!

I just wish I could be Brit’s dresser…because she has a lovely shape, but whomever picks out her wardrobe for the stage…are the opposite of “right”

  14. DarkEmpress says:

Brittney is and has always been more successful than Xtina because of her great personality. She is down to earth and genuine so that shines through and makes people root for her when she is having a rough time and forgive her mistakes. Xtina’s diva attitude turns people off and makes them ready to pull her down because she is always projecting that she thinks she is better than us.

    • blc says:

what a great comment. i totally agree. even after all the craziness that britney has been through, she always comes across as a genuinely nice person, and that makes people root for her. And i definitely agree with your thoughts on xtina

    • glowkey says:

Probably has a lot to do with the fact that Xtina has heard “You’re so amazing!!” ever since she was a tiny tot. Can’t imagine being told you’re a phenomenal talent from a very young age would translate very well into an adult who even considers trying to pretend like she’s “just like everyone else.” Britney on the other hand? Well, I don’t think anyone would ever argue that she’s got any actual vocal talent, and with her not writing songs, playing instruments or (these days, at least) really even dancing while on stage, she probably does genuinely feel more like just the average-at-everything girl who happened to strike at the perfect pop moment and ride her management and PR team’s creativity to the top of the charts.

      • Aly says:

She has a good voice, but we don’t hear it due to overproduction. Britney has a larger range than most singers in her vocal class do. She is able to surpass the restriction of F5 and is able to hit notes as high as G5 and A5 which most in her category cannot. Spears can also hit lower notes than A3 and is able to hit notes like F3 and E3 with relative ease. She arguably has the biggest range of any soubrette in contemporary music. Britney is also able to sing in Middle Voice, Falsetto Voice and Head Voice.

  15. Anastasia says:

You know why I love her? She didn’t just say chocolate, she went on to list no fewer than SEVEN chocolate candies.

Ha. I’ve tried so hard to have disdain for her, but then she does something like that and all I can do is shake my head, chuckle, and realize she’s thawed my heart a tiny bit.

  16. MissVJJ says:

I feel so bad for Britney. Definitely a living example of someone the entertainment industry ate alive and spit back out.

  17. Kim says:

I hear you Brit! I to love chocolate and i to hate working out.

  18. sosuzy says:

I love her honesty. The girl is a survivor. If she wants to skip the gym and eat chocolate like the rest of us mere mortals than so be it!!

  19. Jover says:

Excuse me there is something “cool” about britney? Please, there is nothing cool about a corporate manufactured pop star like britney or her bubblegum fluff music; sorry, Jimi hendrix at Woodstock was cool, in fact he was the coolest person that ever lived, but the days of cool hip people are long gone – if you are conscious of your coolness, you’re not, it should be part of your being so to speak – and in todays utterly contrived mass consumption corporate entertainment world, there is no coolness, just contrivance. For a brief time esp. in the late 60s there was authentic coolness, and each decade since then has seen a decline to today’s affected crap.

  20. Nanea says:

I’ve always had a soft spot for Brit.

I hope she continues to get better. I don’t think though she’ll ever have something that could be called a sense for the right clothes. I’m not even saying sense of style, or fashion sense, that is something many people don’t have.

  21. TG says:

I can’t figure out why everyone loves her. I have never liked her and I think she is one of the biggest frauds out there and for some reason the music community wraps her in cotton and gives her all kinds of chances and accolades that she does not deserve. She is a sloppy uneducated mess and never looks in shape to me, at least not in the last 5 years.

    • Blakesley says:

You’re so right. She also has no morals and doesn’t know herself.I blame her parents for the former.

  22. St Louis Mami says:

She’s about to be 31, not 30 *hangs head in shame at the fact the I know this*

  23. NM9005 says:

When I worked out daily in highschool, it was hard in the beginning. Mostly because I wanted to be pretty so yeah =). After a while you get used to it and the reason to do it changes but for Britney it seems like she doesn’t eat that healthy so it must be harder to balance her weight. She has her priorities but she is public property so I can imagine it’s hard for her to do it mostly for others than herself. I can see her pig out when she would quit being “Britney the popstar Spears”.

It’s a good interview, nothing special, just good.

  24. Mike says:

“Naturally, Brit is still flying (relatively) high, and Xtina is currently floundering as an “artist.””

Sorry but this comparison is so wrong. No matter who you like more. You can’t compare person who has clearly mental issues, who is not able to take care of herself to someone who is a bitch or has problems with career.

  25. Cerulean says:

I don’t think she is talented and have never liked her baby singing voice. Don’t like her music at all. But I do hope for the best for her. I like that she isn’t a stick figure, likes
food and tries. She didn’t let her very public humiliating downward spiral stop her. She is surrounded by a good team who protects her.
So I got no hate for her. I am glad she is better mentally for the sake of her boys.

  26. JaneWonderfalls says:

I actually agree with her, I have been on this diet and exercise kick to sheds some pounds over a month and the most challenging part for me has been exercise, but once I do it, I must say I never regret exercising, it boost my mood and energy and it makes me sleep better and wake up more refreshed in the morning. I actually like Britney, as an entertainer, she’s been through a lot and it’s good to see her seeming more relaxed and less pressure to live up to this “super star” MO. Wish her the best, turning 30 can be scary but I got 7 more months but I’m looking forward to it, I think for me 30 represents a mile stone in my life, I’m thankful to have been able to live this long, so many of the people I know have died so early in life. So actually I’m looking forward to 30, 40, 50 etc. I notice I have become more collected and calm the older I get.

  27. whatevs says:

these answers read like she’s almost back to pre-breakdown britney! i hope that is the case and i’m not even a fan. however i really doubt that she was bipolar sure there is no way we can know but i suspect she just did a lot of stuff after her in the zone album and it was too much, too all of a sudden. she was overworked and had no private life even jt relationship happened because they were introduced at disney etc. and back then i felt like she never got over being abandoned by jt just like that. she married to get over that, maybe for showing off to jt, but also because that is her culture i guess. i wish her well

  28. midnightmoon says:

She is descending into soccer-mom territory. No shame in that-I just wish SOMEONE would start dressing her like a grown-ass woman rather than a teenage tart!

BTW, The Mastery Of Love is such an awesome book. Saved my marriage at a crucial time early on. Highly highly recommend it. My husband & I have given maybe 50 copies to friends. Life changing for me…

Happy Txgiving all you awesome posters.
