Madonna’s all-black ‘W.E.’ screening outfit: lovely and age-appropriate?

These are photos of Madonna at a screening of W.E. at MOMA in NYC last night. I don’t know who designed her outfit – well, I know it wasn’t Stella McCartney – but I think it’s actually a cute outfit. During Madge’s promotion of W.E., I’ve been concentrating on her jacked face too much, and I haven’t been giving Madge enough credit for dressing well. While I don’t think she’s capable of being “age appropriate,” this publicity tour is the closest she’s come. This outfit in particular is super-cute.

So, as the awards season has begun in earnest, do you think Madge is disappointed that W.E. is being consistently overlooked for awards? I think she’s probably disappointed, because Madge thinks everything she does is pure brilliance. On the bright side, W.E. might end up with some Oscar nominations for production design or costumes, so Madge can say that she directed an “Oscar-nominated film.” She’ll like that. Sidenote: I’m pretty sure W.E. is in limited release right now for awards contention, although it might have gotten pushed back?

Meanwhile, it’s time for Madge’s next act. No one really cares about her as a director, but some people still care about her as a pop music performer. Thus, Madge has just signed on to headline the halftime show at the Super Bowl. Ugh.

Madonna will headline the halftime show of the upcoming Super Bowl at Indianapolis, Indiana’s Lucas Oil Stadium on February 5, the NFL and NBC announced Sunday night. The Grammy Award-winning Vogue singer will work with a Cirque du Soleil squad, choreographer Jamie King and Moment Factory for what is sure to be a historical performance in the making.

Last year’s game included performances from The Black Eyed Peas, Slash and Usher. The film W.E. — which Madonna directed, wrote and produced — hits theaters February 3. Fun fact: The 53-year-old Material Girl has past dated jocks including hoops enigma Dennis Rodman, and baseball sluggers Alex Rodriguez and Jose Canseco.

[From Radar]

Ah, she’s doing the halftime show as a way to promote W.E.? Do you think she’ll do a shoutout for her film on stage? Do you think Harvey Weinstein will shell out the big bucks for a W.E. commercial during the Super Bowl?

It’s fascinating to see that with all her actions against aging, you can still see her actual age reflecting on her face. I think she does look her age, albeit a little bit softer. I think she’s not lucky in the aging department like Tilda Swinton, her genes are not working as well as her surgeon.

    • Sassy says:

Her marionette lines are a real sign of aging. The lines from each side of mouth to chin. Surgeon must have forgotten to inject there. Her outfit? Meh. She would look stunning on a simple chic dress or classic pants and top in black.

  2. L says:

Just what I need during the superbowl. Madonna and her jacked face and arms in HD. Blech.

    • niki says:

Oh EW, thanks for the nauseating visual LOL

      • Elizabeth says:

I’m a baby boomer born in ’62. But I do not watch the Super Bowl half time show to see my contemporaries or older on stage. Come on! Why is everyone on that show now so past their musical prime? That being said, I love Cirque and Madge can come up big for a stage show. Who knows.

    • Original Tiffany says:

Well, as a touring member of a Cirque show…fantastic! Should be great. They do everything first class. That’s fun news.
Just ignore Madge’s face in HD and concentrate on Cirque. Should be an interesting halftime.

  3. niki says:

A diamond necklace of the film title? Wow. C.l.a.s.s.y. She is going to whore this out for all it’s worth, I’m sure.

  4. CandyKay says:

Madonna has small features, and small features generally don’t age as well as large ones. The classic comparison is Paul Newman and Robert Redford: Newman’s face, with his big eyes and strong nose, looked great until he was very old, while Refford’s tiny, pretty features collapsed.

Women with strong features, like Meryl Streep, also age better.

    • Jayna says:

Madonna had big eyes always, they were her most compelling feature. Only in the last two years has age shown up on her eyes. At 48 in concert her eyes were big and luminous.

    • carrie says:

Paul Newman did a facelift in the years 90’s also

  5. Boo says:

I read somewhere that celeb women “of a certain age” are dying their roots brown so that they look younger, so that people believe their own natural color is not gray. I believe our Madge here may be leading that parade.

Still, she looks good. I like this outfit, and those shoes kick ass.

    • Kimbob says:

@Boo, thanks for pointing that out. I looked @ her roots in these pics…not that these pics are the end-all-be-all…but, true to form, I couldn’t make out not even one gray hair. Hell, I’m sold!

    • jermsmom says:

actually, if brown is your base color then between highlighting we normally just have our roots touched up with the base color so the hair is not damaged by constant bleaching. This is the technique my hairdresser uses but I haven’t seen Madonna use it in a while.

      • Boo says:

That makes sense, but her base color seems to be blonde with lighter blonde highlights, not brown with blonde highlights. I’m not a hairdresser, though, so maybe I’m mistaken?

      • jermsmom says:

I am not for sure, but I *think* she is naturally a brunette? I am a natural brunette but when gray took over 70% of my hair my hairdresser thought blonde would be more forgiving. She still does a base of a lighter brunette on me then does the blonde. I will give her credit, though, her hair has always been in really good condition for as much as she lightens it!

      • olcranky says:

I started dying my dark brown/black hair last year because I was getting an awful lot of silver and gray hairs that were thicker than the rest of my hair so it made it really noticeable. My hair dresser highlights it but keeps the base a little lighter than my natural color and always flinches when I tell her I miss my darker hair. I can go more than 12-weeks between touch ups the way she does it because you really don’t notice the gray unless you look closely but I’d probably have to have touch ups every 6 weeks if I kept it dark

  6. birdie says:

Her face settled really well, she looks good! I like the outfit on her!
BUT if her movie gets nominated for ANY kind of Oscar.. She would be so annoying about it, she doesn’t deserve that!

  7. Mikamoo says:

    camel toe

    • Redd says:

Exactly. Maybe she didn’t notice through the depends.

      • Jayna says:

Sigh. Demeaning vibrant women over fifty as needing Depends. Tacky ageism remarks by trollish men about women never ceases to amaze me.

    • Krill says:

How can you see that on your monitor? All I see are black pants. If anything, the pants seem to bag a bit in the crotch area. And I agree with Jayna about the tacky ageism remarks.

  8. khaveman says:

It’s all a win. But her face looks sooo puffy. Hm.

  9. jermsmom says:

I love the outfit but there is something off about the fit of the pants. Look at the crotch (oh, ew, can’t believe I said to look at her crotch!) it sort of looks like she has a butt in the front.

  10. JaneWonderfalls says:

Is it me or is she starting to look bloated and look kind of like the cat lady? Ladies nothing is wrong with aging natural…I think when you try and get surgery to cover up aging you just look worst hence Madonna.

    • anonymoose says:

to jane, lulu, and the toad-commenter below: Agreed!

The outfit is not flattering on her. She does look puffy. Those shoes are awful. Cute jacket – would look great with a simple black knee-length dress and some black suede strappy heels. Even with fishnets that would win over this.

  11. lulu says:

ugh. Can’t believe that outfit got your approval!
I think it looks like something thrown together when the doorbell rang and you were curled up watching a DVD and whoops! People are waiting for you in a taxi outside so you pick things up off the floor going ‘black…. panic …black….panic….black. They match! Readdddyyy!’

Or in Madonna’s case, someone took her down from the meat hook she sleeps on upside down, and woke her from her age-reducing trance and had to put up with the ‘I absolutely loathe being woken up older than when I went to sleep’ and finally managed to make her understand that she was supposed to be at the screening of WE at the MoMA whereupon she has her minions run and grab clothing from her crawl-in wardrobe and they go ‘…black..panic…black…panic…black – they match. Oh Madonna, you look younger than Lola in that. Your twenty-four year old boyfriend could be your FATHER!’
And then they push her on a luggage trolley to her limousine and gently fold her up in accordance with the titanium joints she had put in to replace her worn out hips, elbows and knees…And there are tiny little wheels in those Louboutins, and look – someone is pulling her along by the hand. Subtle?

But hey – in that first shot, she really has one of her ‘I absolutely loathe Ordinary People’ faces on, doesn’t she?’

    • Mi says:

That’s the first thing I noticed, the forced creaky smile. As if her eyes burned by having to look at the ordinary humans or she might catch something from one of them. She’s so stiff and awkward looking…..

    • EscapedConvent says:

Lulu(#11), the image of Madge being wheeled to her limousine on a luggage trolley will have me giggling for the rest of the evening. And the tiny wheels in the Louboutins? That is brilliant & designers need to get started on that concept immediately. I wish I understood how ankles aren’t being sprained & broken daily by those hooves.

And oh my God, she *does* look like Bette Davis now! Gasp! I see it!

  12. mary simon says:

finally! a little grooming, a little glamour! and she had her hair done instead of yanking it to the side with a bobby pin. bravo, madonna!

  13. spinner says:

I think she looks great!! Love the outfit.

  14. ladybert62 says:

    She looks strange.
The outfit might be cute but I could not take my eyes off of her awful hair and double chin!

  15. B says:

She looks like a swollen, arrogant toad.

  16. Jayna says:

Fantastic. But I have loved her whole W.E. Promotion looks. Very classic.

I just heard the Madonna ballad being used at the end of W.E. It’s beautiful and early 90s Madonna. I love a sophisticated Madonna ballad.

  17. texasmom says:

EEEKK! Apparently I have trained myself NOT to look at Madonna’s crotch as I didn’t see anything amiss until you guys pointed it out.

Overall she looks pretty good to me in that outfit — as long as she keeps the jacket on. It looks like that’s a tank top under there, that spells trouble in gnarly-arm land.

  18. JudyK says:

Would never have recognized her, especially in the third pic…what has she done to her face…another ugh from me.

  19. Kimbob says:

I had replied to @Boo about her comment about lack of gray hair above.

    W/regards to Madonna’s hairstyle…it is a beautiful hairstyle. She’s got a good/healthy head of hair, that’s for sure…….however…..this particular hairstyle on her..for her facial features now…her ageing…NOT GOOD!

    Note to Madonna…Girl, you’re not 30 or 40 anymore…get a clue!

**Also, I’m not saying that just because someone is “older” that they should chop off their hair…HELL NO! There are some women that are older that have very long hair, and it looks GREAT…but not Madonna! At the VERY LEAST, she should pin/pile some of the back of it high up, let some tendrils drape around her face…would be more flattering, I think.

I used to think highly of Madonna, then her largesse/condescending ego “slipped out” one time too many for me, so it’s kind of like karma to me that she’s not looking top shelf, even WITH all the plastic surgeons she’s probably got on retainer. I’ll say it again…karma’s a bitch!

  20. luls says:

If only she hadnt stuffed her poor face with those horrible fake fat cheeks, she’d look light-years better!

Oh well, bonus points for dressing appropriately and covering up all the gristle! 🙂

  21. djork says:

Only a narcissistic dipshit like Madonna could make a movie about a narcissistic dipsh-t like Wallis Simpson and and wear her initials, WE, around her neck–in diamonds, no less. Occupy Madonna!

  22. Nancy says:

Wow the amount of nasty comments from people is really sad and quite pathetic anyways I think for her age she looks amazing!

  23. Girl says:

I love that the article includes her former bedroom line-up. “Now at bat, Jose Canseco!!!”.

    Klassy

I think she looks better than she usually does here but “lovely” might be a bit of a stretch.

  24. jermsmom says:

@Jayna – true. I am 54 and the last time I checked I was still going pee-pee in the potty and didn’t need a diaper!

  25. MeMyself says:

Am I the only woman who can not stand those horrible shoes? I really do think in years to come, looking back, there will be some chuckles as to how odd, horsey, and ugh they were. Give me a classic, elegant pump any day.

    • clare says:

I totally agree with you! The hoofy look of those heels ruin the outfit.
      Bring back the classic heels!

    • Anoni Mus says:

The shoes ruined the look for me, especially with the tapering and weirdly short pants. She looks stumpy but on stilts!

Otherwise, meh on her looks. She’s trying to hold on to youth, but her face (although puffy) is still Madonna, you know? Recognizable!

    • Rachel says:

I’m with you. I cannot stand this style, but feel stupid for feeling that way every time I see it. 😉 I love a classic, basic black pump very much and still mourn the demise of my favorite pair that I felt were the exact perfect shape and proportions and height and fit…. I have weak ankles and am pretty picky about my footwear, and it’s weird/sad to me that you can’t really get a low heel in styles these days. Even if a shoe is cute, it starts out at, like, 4″ high. ;D

  26. G says:

    She’s looking like Bette Davis.

Honestly it must be hard to be “Madonna ” everyday. Competeing with younger versions of yourself is an excercise in futility, even with someone with Madonna’s resources.

I’m really in favor of her updating her look. Retro is a look best worn by the young. When it’s worn by the mature, it’s more like “out of style.”

The more I see of this the more I think a judicious use of botox is Ok. Some skin freshening, fine. But the fillers seem unpredictable and bloat inducing.

  27. LeeLoo says:

I just thought about Madonna from the pictures above performing in one of those sexy outfits that she has and now I have vomit in my mouth. She just looks so gross now. Hope this is a lesson as to why people should never get exessive amounts of plastic surgery. Ick! It’s one thing to get a nose job if your nose doesn’t fit your face, it’s another entirely to try and prevent inevitable aging. Demi Moore should be taking note. If Madonna doesn’t try and smile she does look halfway decent.

    • jermsmom says:

You bring up a really good point here. While I think some of the age remarks are totally out of line (like the Depends remark!) as a 54 year old woman I do think there comes a time when you need to hang up certain things publicly. No matter how good we look whether by good genes or a good surgeon, age does show – you just can’t hide it. You CAN still be alluring and even a bit sexy but you have to work it in a more subtle way. There is just nothing worse than seeing wrinkled cleavage and overtly sexy wear on someone my age. You might even have a great body, but honestly, don’t kid yourself, age shows!

  28. ahoyhoy says:

I live in Indianapolis, and we just don’t have that many ‘Madonna-worthy’ hotel rooms, so I’m dying to know where she’ll stay. (I have worked for 2 of the best.)
The ‘Presidential Suites’ have certainly already been reserved by others for the SB—What I wouldn’t give to work where she’s staying, there’s going to be some true diva greatness goin’ on!

  29. Nev says:

    she looks great!!!

  30. Aurelia says:

Yeah, bette davis in “What Happened to Baby Jane”

Her face and tits look bloated and matronly. A strange juxtaposition with the young, slutty black outfit.

  31. NM9005 says:

Oh and I find her outfit gorgeous. It’s appropriate, business-like but with a hint of glamour and playfullness. The shoes are killer! Her hair complements her face, it’s a modern youthful cut that suits her. It reminds me of her Confessions tour hair. One of her better haircuts.

  32. whatevs says:

oh god hire a stylist for the love of all eyesight
however i think this is the fattest i’ve ever seen her. fat by madonna’s standards i mean. maybe she decided to gain some weight to look younger* too late for her skin tho

  33. Happy21 says:

Love her outfit. It IS age appropriate and looks great on her. I look forward to seeing what they come up with for the halftime show.

She does need to lay off whatever she keeps doing to her face though…

  34. Cathy says:

I like the outfit, it’s kind of laid back for her, I just don’t see how she can walk in those shoes. I’d fall flat on my face.

  35. I.want.shoes says:

I have to disagree on the outfit being ‘super-cute’ on Madonna. The short jacket and top make it seem like she has a shrunken torso. The top/tanktop gives the illusion of a belly. And the pants are horrendous! She does look like she is wearing a diaper underneath (last photo).

  36. Francesca says:

She looks like a 50yr old, which is definitely okay. More disturbing is the venom people release about her, her face, her lack of talent etc; she is not well loved by anyone, anymore it seems…

    • Jayna says:

Not true. Go to to her concerts. Stadiums filled with screaming fans who adore her, and in return she gives it her all for two hours on stage like no other.

  37. Jover says:

The NFL needs to ditch these halftime shows and just use marching bands – they never come off well (BEP last yr was truly awful and amateurish), it is a football game, and because of the balkanization of pop culture/music it’s hard to find someone with wide appeal.

  38. SEF says:

SO bored of Madonna in black.

  39. Turtle Dove says:

Looks wise, Madonna is looking good. She’s fit, etc. I’m going to cut her some slack cause I think she’s heading into menopause and her body is changing a little, but in a nice way. The extra 5-7 lbs looks fantastic on her.

  40. the original bellaluna says:

    WHAT is wrong her FACE?!?

    • gab says:

Hi original bellaluna, I think what is off about her face is the stupid cheek fillers she had put in. Before that I thought she looked so much younger and better. It’s what gives her that puppet look, like Madame.

  41. BELLA says:

And she will look like trash for superbowl …. wish she would dress her age,it makes look older and silly.

  42. e.non says:

i can’t even imagine the superbowl audience is looking forward to a madonna performance.

ugh … i just can’t believe how desperate she is to remain 23 forever.. i honestly did not expect this from her.

  43. Camille says:

I like the outfit, but its her face that bothers me :\.

  44. lisa says:

I love the outfit and her hair color is beautiful.

And yes as a poster up thread said. She looks her age. Not a bad thing. She looks her age.

She is going to bring it to the show. Mainly because she is aware of those others.. Rihanna, Gaga, Bey.. she knows and will answer.

I have not enjoyed a half time show in years. and that makes me mad when I think about it.

  45. Jana says:

Her face has settled and now she has looked pretty this W.E. promotion era, save the occasional bad angle. Her cheek fillers are less. But back in 2006/2007 when she had minimal fillers, just a fresher look, she looked luminous, beautiful large eyes. Two years later at 50 she looked too done and then she started adding too many fillers or cheek implants (not sure), but actually made her look older. Instead, now that her eyes are showing age, she should have had her upper lids done and stuck with minimal fillers like she had back in 2006/2007 instead.

Here is Madonna five years ago at 48 before puffing up her face:

    • Jana says:

Here is Madonna two years later at 50 on her next tour having had work done that makes her look too done with some fillers, not as good as 2006 link I posted above. After this tour was over is when she got cheek implants or heavier cheek fillers.

    • NM9005 says:

Aaaah, Substitute was my favorite moment of that DVD! So wonderful. Her body was at its best then too. Toned but not too much unlike her Sticky and Sweet tour. Imo, Confessions and Re-invention were best looks and body wise!

  46. Lisa says:

lol. They caught her with some pretty unflattering expressions, but she does look great. I love those shoes!

  47. Az says:

She’s staring to look more and
    more like Judy Tenuta!

  48. trh says:

“Bring me Solo and the Wookiee. They will all suffer for this outrage.”

  49. bagladey says:

    The outfit looks good.

  50. MAMAKOWALSKA says:

When she smiles big and that skin forms under her chin it brings out her grandma-esque big-face-jowls.

  51. MJ says:

I actually like this outfit. Her face has settled in a bit since the last round of photos, but she sure loves making that “I farted and it stinks” face à la Kate Winslet.
