Hugh Hefner had “mixed emotions” about putting Lindsay Lohan on the cover

I know it’s cool to hate on Hugh Hefner these days. I know we’re supposed to hate him because he’s old and out of touch and really, all of the stuff with the girlfriends and that sleazy fiancé, that was all very gross. But I can’t hate the man – I was recently watching a documentary about him, and he really is a cultural iconoclast who was relevant for decades, who pushed important issues and who, I believe, was on the right side of history on racial issues, freedom of speech, feminism issues and issues of women’s choice and birth control. Is he out of touch right now? Sure. But he’s 85 years old, and he still manages to be coherent and cognizant enough to make a decent enough point.

So Hef gave another interview to discuss Lindsay Lohan’s Playboy cover. Initial reports suggested that the LL cover wasn’t selling, but Hef claimed over the weekend that it was “breaking records”. Now he’s trying to justify why LL was chosen and how he had to lay down the law:

Hugh Hefner believes Lindsay Lohan’s Marilyn Monroe-themed Playboy pictorial will be a keepsake – but the media mogul admits he initially had doubts about featuring the embattled actress on its cover.

“The concept came from my editors,” Hefner, 85, told PEOPLE during a recent interview at the Playboy Mansion in L.A.

“I had mixed emotions to begin with,” he said. “I could not have anticipated, quite frankly, that it would turn out to be such a sensational newsworthy event, or that the pictorial would turn out so well.”

Oddly enough, the two have never crossed paths – even at the photo shoot. Even so, Hefner, who says Lohan, 25, is “carrying around some serious luggage,” hopes the Playboy opportunity is a step in the right direction.

“Historically, Playboy pictorials are connected to celebrities at various times in their career,” Hefner says. “Sometimes it’s the beginning of their career and sometimes it comes at a particular moment – as with Lindsay – that is intended as a turnaround.”

Using Drew Barrymore as an example of someone whose career skyrocketed after landing the magazine’s cover during a career low, Hefner says his wish is that “this is a born-again beginning for Lindsay. I think there’s a rooting interest for her.”

Part of the success of the shoot probably stems Hef’s direction that Lohan posed fully naked.

During negotiations, “Some of the people around her said, ‘No, no, no, I don’t want her nude,’ ” he says. “And I said, ‘No, this is how it’s going to be. This is how it is.’ “

[From People]

It still mystifies me that LL pretended to have qualms about posing nude. The girl used to flash her vadge like crazy, and she dropped trou for other photoshoots too. And she’s basically a call girl. So what’s the big deal? Was it just her way of demanding more money? Probably.

As for the pictorial being the “turn-around” moment in LL’s career – fat chance. I guess it’s nice that Hef thinks LL still has the capability for “turning it around” though. He’s a nice old codger.

    Oh my gawd.

Crackie is is so far from Drew Barrymore in every way it isn’t even funny.

  2. LeeLoo says:

I don’t know how Drew and Lindsay can be compared. Drew had already been clean for 5 years at that time (except I do not necessarily believe that Drew has ever been clean for that long). Plus she wasn’t constastantly in trouble with the law. For Hef to compare Lindsay and Drew is insulting.

  3. unBEArable says:

seriously what the hayell is up with her double chin. after all the work she’s had done, this would be the ONE THING i would take care of, were i her.

  4. Seal Team 6 says:

Coke/Meth bloat for sure, and also maybe from the drinking.

  5. Nonamechick says:

Is it me or does her hairline look like it’s farther back than it should be? I have a rather large forehead but geez

  6. imabrat says:

How disturbing for Drew, to even be remotely compared to Lohan. Talk is cheap and so is that Lohan spread. Seems it would have been more appropriate for her to be featured in Grunge magazine.

  7. beclove says:

Looking like WO in that last shot big time.

    And Hef looks better.

  8. Girl says:

He’s amazingly consistent. How many of his former centerfolds have had substance abuse problems? Probably a lot more than the general population.

It’s a pattern of objectifying women. I think his brand of “feminism” is disgusting. Polish it with bullshit like right to kill unborn children (something I think to them is more about escaping responsibility than any right someone has over their body) and it’s still bullshit and all about them. Not women.

    • RachaelColleen says:

Omg Girl, you took the words right out of my mouth! I absolutely agree that their huge support for the supposed “woman’s right to control her body” is a load if crap. It’s totally just about skirting responsibility after choosing to spread your legs. Personally, I find any female who could do that disgusting and shouldn’t have the honour of being called a “woman” at all…

      • Jules says:

Who are you to judge? Mind your own business and keep your nasty opinions to yourself.

      • Lady D says:

RachaelColleen, have you every heard the expression There but for the grace of God go I? It’s also very good of you to stick up for your own kind.

      • Seal Team 6 says:

        What Jules and LadyD said.

      • gg says:

That is really ugly and you’re painting everyone with the same nasty brush. it never works to generalize. There are circumstances that change things sometimes, and there are many women who are suffering because they either did, or did not do something they think they should or should not have done.

    • Emily says:

      Yes! This! You win x1000.

I loathe the kind of “feminism” that promotes the objectification of women. Sorry Hef, no brownie points from me.

And I honestly think that the Hugh Hefners of the world benefited more from the so-called “sexual revolution” than most women did.

    • whatevs says:

give me a break. it is a woman’s right to have an abortion and we will not be going back a hundred years and lose it.

  9. Annie says:

Yep, that’s Marilyn Monroe right there *dies laughing*. More like Marilyn MonNOTHANKS.

  10. hazeldazel says:

i call bullsheet on Hef. It ain’t selling, she ain’t clean, she ain’t “turning it around”. This is all watching her circle around the drain.

  11. Sapphire says:

Hef hasn’t been about anything having to do with empowering women in 30 years. Sorry I can’t buy the “nice old codger” line. Which makes total sense that he chooses to use this twit as a model.

  12. the original bellaluna says:

She lost her opportunity to “turn it around” when she pulled her partying & no-showing stunts on the set of Georgia Rule. With MERYL STREEP, FFS! (The producer/director – whatever – put her on blast IN PUBLIC!)

And when Tina Fey had a little “come to Jesus” talk with her.

The only place this girl’s going is where Hef’s OTHER girls end up: the Vegas Strip. IF she lives that long.

  13. DomCoug says:

HERE HERE! even more so after she dies of a drug overdose… it’l be worth alot then… Hugh got it goin on! The odds are all there…….. RAWR!

  14. original kate says:

hef looks better than blohan does.

    there, i said it.

  15. Starsh says:

Bleh. Misogynists and the general public have been using the old feminism=sexual liberation argument for objectifying women since the 60s. Nothing in common.

  16. wunder says:

Hef is as much of a ‘feminist’ as Lohan is a ‘move star’. . . puleese!

You’ll find out that Hef’s jus a nasty old perv if you get to know anything about how he really treats ‘his girls’.

  17. wunder says:

So according to pervo Hef, Playboy is some kind of ‘feminist social service’ for wannbes or has-beens who need to turn thier careers around. . . double puke!

There is nothing ‘noble’ about PLayboy and Hef is jus an old, fugly strung out delusional pimp. He may have a lot of exploitation money, but he’s jus as lost as clueless Lohan.

  18. Violet's Roses says:

Nice old codger who puts women in the position of being seen as just a piece of disposable meat. Like all of his disposable Barbie girlfriends.

  19. Violet's Roses says:

Why is the color under her chin so different than the color on her face? Has she had derma-brasion on her face to take away the sun-damage/discoloration that’s so noticable on the rest of her body?

    • gg says:

I think the trick is to fake-tan everything but the front of your face when you have a double chin, or no chin at all (see Kirsty Alley). In fact, I made a mental note to try that on my middle-aged chin this weekend …

  20. Anne says:

Hefner’s support of women’s choices, has nothing to do with him actually supporting a woman’s right to make her own choices. He supports it because it fit into “the swinging lifestyle” he has created.

Especially since there have been enough stories from several former girlfriends that go into detail about how condoms were not used when they had sex with him. And the creppy and controlling way he gives girlfriends a curfew. Do the women who live there sign up for that? Sure, but don’t pretend that his support for sexual freedom actually extends to women.

    • whatevs says:

he’s from an era where women barely had any rights and he actually said women are sex objects. and he said that only a year or two ago.

  21. Penguin says:

Nobody’s rooting for her. Britney and drew maybe but she’s used up all her second chances a long time ago.

  22. Rio says:

So I have a genuine question (and I have no dog in this race)…

What necessarily makes Hugh Hefner the “bad guy” and the women who pose for Playboy “objectified”?
I mean, who decides who will be in Playboy? Seems like it’s the women who submit their photos. Why aren’t THEY the ones accused of objectifying women? It’s not like Hef held a gun to their heads and told them to strip.
In this day and age in America you can’t just blame men for everything that might cast women in a bad light– that, in my honest opinion, is the antithesis of feminism, where women fought so hard to be seen as equals. If we women want to be seen as such, well, we have to admit that we’re perfectly capable of objectifying ourselves.

Anyway, I’d be interested to hear any thoughts about this. Hell, some of the earliest pinup photographers were women– including Bunny Yeager, who photographed Bettie Page’s famous Christmas Playboy spread!

  23. dean travers says:

Thank you Rio. A voice of reason! You know what ain’t feminist? Assuming that woman need to be coaxed/coerced into nudity or the sex industry in general.I have yet to hear that these condom-less encounters involved a beat-down if the girl did not comply. These are decisions made by grown women. Leave Hef alone, he is an icon in our culture and Playboy is damn near wholesome. As a feminist through and through it offends the hell out me to assume that no woman would gladly display her body (especially for generous compensation). What kind of retro bullshit is that? Hef, you cool in my book. And BTW, Drew Barrymore was an annoying attention whore when she did her spread, quit the pearl clutching.

    • gg says:

Well, you’re probably the only person on this page that thinks so – and you’re a MAN. so …

      • dean travers says:

Hee hee..no I am not. I am a 35 year old woman. Dean Travers was the Dean of the culinary school that Jack Tripper attended. Shame on you for not knowing your 3’s Company! Furthermore, being the “only one” on a thread that feels a certain way could go two ways yes? One,that I am an irrational, arbitrary contrarian (sp). Or two, perhaps I have a mind of my own and am not impressed by repressed, pseudo-feminist rantings. Return to 3rd grade and be the queen of the castle there you boring square. Warmly, Dean Travers

  24. kitty bye says:

Hefner looks younger than her. Whatever is going on there?

  25. Purple Shoes says:

What happened to Lindsay Lohan she started out like such a good girl and now she’s on drugs what the hell happened here she was really smart too now she’s a complete idiot having trouble with the law what a low life.
Eurgh old wrinkly Hugh i bet his balls are all old and wrinkly. Old wrinkly balls!

  26. Purple Shoes says:

Why do men like Hugh Hefner complain about women being after their money and yet still sleep with those same women, date them and even marry them. Do these men not know that there are women who genuinely want true love. Why do men like Hugh Hefner perpetuate sexism towards themselves its like they have a love hate relationship with women.
Why do certain men like Hugh Hefner choose sleeping around with loads of women as a back up plan for not finding their true love this just proves how stupid men are and the sheer lack of relationship common sense and lack of wisdom that they have.
