Critics Choice Fashion: Michelle Williams is gorgeous in black-and-white Chanel

As I mentioned before, I recently saw My Week With Marilyn, and I really was impressed with Michelle Williams’ performance. I’m not fighting with you about her anymore, at least not about her talent. She’s talented, and her work as Marilyn Monroe was solid-to-great. I’ll be pleased if Michelle ends up with another Oscar nomination for Best Actress. But I’ll be kind of disappointed if she wins – I don’t think she should win. It was a good enough movie overall for her to win. But I’m happy to see her at all of the awards shows.

So here’s Michelle at last night’s Critics Choice Awards, where she lost to Viola Davis (who owned it). Michelle went with Chanel, from the 2012 Resort collection. Michelle memorably wore Chanel to last year’s Oscars too, and I absolutely loved her Oscar gown. I’m not completely in love with this gown, but it’s okay. It fits her beautifully and I like that she went for monochromatic black-and-white rather than a wispy, delicate, fragile pastel or barely-there metallic.

As for her styling – meh. I’m still happy that her hair is darker, but the cut is still too short, I think. She needs to grow out those itty-bitty bangs. She can still have short hair, she should just have it, like, a shaggy Mick Jagger cut. I’d like to see her with a different lipstick color too, I think. But one word about Michelle’s skin: PERFECTION. She has beautiful skin!! It looks flawless here, and it looked flawless in My Week With Marilyn too.

Also – I’m pretty sure Busy Phillips was just there as Michelle’s date. Busy is often Michelle’s date at these events, and I think their friendship and girly date nights are super-cute.

I’m not saying she isn’t a good actress, it just blows me away that she played MM with her figure. She’s a waif!

    • podzol says:

There were loads of boob, hip and butt padding for her Marilyn role. True story!

    • smith says:

She wore a custom butt pad and I’m sure enhanced upper regions as well.

Just google “Michelle Williams butt pad” I’m sure you’ll find something.

Also BUSY – Girlfriend. Brought. It. She looks fabulous.

  2. brin says:

She looks lovely and her skin is perfection! Nothing like having your bff at your side!

  3. Cody says:

At least she wanted to share the evening with her bff and did not have to hire an escort like Clooney did. I like her dress.

    • sam b says:

      bahahahaha soo true lol…

Michelle is very cute i like her short hair i know some dont but i get that shes a little different and loves the indie i dont care vibe

  4. chloe says:

I like the top half of the dress, but not a fan of the bottom. I love Busy’s dress, it fits her better than the dress she wore for the People Choice, this one makes her look smaller. I love that they have stayed friends for all these years.

  5. Shontay says:

Plenty of best actress Oscar winners have been in so-so movies. I happen to love MWWM and I want Michelle to win. She won’t this time, but it’s only a matter of time before she does.

  6. Ruby Red Lips says:

I really dislike Michelle, can’t even tell u why really but I find her really unlikable since watching her on Dawsons Creek – she was just too irritating! Saying all that I don’t doubt her as an actress but its just her lack of likability that bothers me

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

The fact that you still associate her with Dawson’s Creek is amazing to me. (and i don’t mean that in a harsh way) This woman has done SO much outstanding work since then-Wendy & Lucy, Blue valentine, Brokeback, Deception, Shutter Island, Schynectode, etc..and now My Week with Marilyn. I was 17 when Dawson’s Creek came out but I literally NEVER think of Dawson’s when I see Michelle. If you dislike her, I really urge you to see some of her other work. I think it might change your mind…..

    • Jules says:

I feel this way too….I want to like her, but I always find her acting more annoying than anything else.

  7. Mika says:

    Kim Kelly is my friend?

    • meta says:

      what?

      • Lee says:

it’s a reference to Freaks and Geeks where Busy Phillips played a girl named Kim Kelly and I think there was an episode titled ‘Kim Kelly is my friend’.

I didn’t realize Busy and Michelle were BFFs. That’s cute though. Does it date back to Dawson’s Creek?

As for the dress, I think it’s gorgeous, but Michelle has very narrow hips and I don’t think the cut is very flattering on her with the shoulder-pad/bolero bit throwing her proportions off a little.

  8. Marjalane says:

That dress looks way too stiff on her, and she doesn’t look comfortable in it. Does Michelle ever smile with her mouth open?!

  9. Fabianne says:

This dress is growing on me. Looks very retro.

  10. lucy2 says:

I think she’s a really good actress. I wouldn’t choose the dress for myself, but it suits her well.
I like Busy’s dress more, but her hair and makeup looks a bit severe in that photo. Love that they’ve stayed such good friends.

  11. Maya says:

I think she looks lovely; I really love her makeup here. I highly doubt she’ll win the Oscar, but I do hope she wins for ‘Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical’ at the Golden Globes on Sunday.

  12. Samgirl says:

That dress is great, but Busy is just blowing me out of the water. I never realized how great her body is. Has she lost weight or something recently? I just remember she was heavier in White Chicks and that God awful show with Courtney Cox.

  13. Jacq says:

Michelle looks like she wore a black dress under a white one. It’s flattering, but strange. I’m just glad to see her wearing something hat doesn’t look like a china doll.
Busy looks pretty and happy. Their friendship goes back to Dawson’s days, so I bet they’ve been through a lot together.

  14. Marianne says:

I like Michelle’s dress. It’s different. And I do like the strawberry blonde hair.

  15. TheOriginalKitten says:

YES! One of the few actresses out there that’s rockin’ the short ‘do. So nice to see…Love Michelle-one of the most talented actresses out there right now and gorgeous to boot.

  16. Mimi says:

I love this woman. We are kindred spirits I tell you lol. Also her and Busy (who looks AMAZING) remind me a lot of me and my bff.

  17. Sassenach says:

Michelle looks beautiful. I had grown tired and irritated with her put on gamine look. She sure is campaigning hard.

  18. Sasha says:

Wow, she looks sensational. The dress is perfect for her body. I also didn’t realise how much the super blonde hair washed her out before. This new colour is absolutely perfect.

And her SKIN. Arghhhh how does she do it?

  19. Ramona Q says:

Her hair color is awful! It looks like a color great grandma would use to cover her gray hair.

  20. Alli says:

I love her hair color, look much more natural. She looks so pretty lately. 🙂

  21. Anguishedcorn says:

She is so pretty, and I actually did a little internal gasp when I saw the dress. I love, love, love it.

  22. Sol says:

Busy is Matilda’s godmother. I love to see them together and i will always adore Michelle as Jen on Dawson’s Creek. She made me cry so much on her final episode heartbreaking!

But i also recognize how talented she is. She is great at drama (me without you)horror (halloween) thriller, suspense (shutter island)Romance, drama (blue valentine) also comedy, Dick!! So versatile and talented!! Hope she keeps being recognized.

  23. Maritza says:

She looks great and what great complexion she has, she looks like a porcelain doll.

  24. sam says:

Her mouth always smiles, but her eyes always seem to say “I hate doing this”

  25. Vera says:

I really loved MWWM – saw it when it first came out. I didn’t doubt she would do well at the part.

Sure, her figure isn’t what people associate with Marilyn, but if you call her a size fourteen by today’s standards, you are fooling yourself. At most she was maybe a size eight by today’s standards – the sizing for women has changed since the 50s and 60s. Plus, Michelle had padding that helped her out, and she put on some pounds for the role. I really can’t think of another actress who looks enough like Marilyn to pass for her.

Her acting was great, though it was the part I was expecting. She tends to do tragic characters so I basically knew when it was announced they’d play up the tragic aspects of Marilyn as much as possible. And Michelle does that well.

I’d be happy if she won an Oscar. She’s done great work. I honestly don’t know who she’d be up against, which I probably should know but I’m drawing a blank. Haven’t seen the Iron Lady, but that’d probably be one thing that would be up against it.

  26. original sandy says:

i like Michelle’s acting, she seems low key in person.

  27. Katie says:

    I LOVE THIS DRESS.
