Mark Wahlberg on 9/11 comments: “I am not an actor, I’m a real guy from the streets”

Ugh, I totally missed this last week. So, Mark Wahlberg’s interview with Men’s Journal came out last Wednesday, and Mark managed to offend pretty much everyone. Specifically, though, he offended the families of 9/11 victims, especially the families of those people in the hijacked planes. Mark told Men’s Journal, “If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn’t have went down like it did. There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, ‘OK, we’re going to land somewhere safely, don’t worry.’” Within hours, Mark sacked up and issued a poorly worded apology (non-apology, really) to People Mag, saying in part: “To suggest I would have done anything differently than the passengers on that plane was irresponsible. I deeply apologize to the families of the victims that my answer came off as insensitive. It was certainly not my intention.”

I thought it ended there, with everyone still thinking that Mark was a d-bag, but most people not wanting to push the issue because… really, it’s Mark Wahlberg. Anyway, after the controversy faded a bit, Mark did a radio show and he talked about his controversial comments even further. I think he managed to re-offend:

Mark Wahlberg spoke to Kidd Kraddick in the Morning on Friday where he tried to explain his statement, and said he’s just a regular guy who said something wrong.

“I would never disrespect the victims of 9/11 or their families. It was completely misunderstood. My only intention was to explain the fact that I would do anything to protect my family – I would put myself in harms way to protect my family or innocent people. That was it.”

“First and foremost, I am not an actor. I am a real guy from the streets and I’ve been in a lot of situations, so I was probably speaking out of line and I wasn’t thinking about the real heroes and the guys, women, children, fathers, sons, daughters who were on those flights.”

Wahlberg, who is promoting his movie Contraband, which was #1 at the box office last weekend, then said his good deeds are usually overlooked in the media.

“And it’s important to me because you know what, people don’t have a tendency, especially the media, don’t want to talk to me about going to Afghanistan at Christmas or raising $2 million a year for inner city kids and at risk youth.,” Wahlberg continued. “And all of a sudden this thing became this thing — I didn’t know where it came from.”

“I don’t go out doing publicity for movies or a magazine cover talking about what’s important to me. I want to promote the movie and whatever questions they want to ask me I am more than comfortable talking about. But it wasn’t a Q&A where it was the exact question and my exact response. It was somebody’s interpretation of it and you know… that’s not OK because I don’t want people to be offended. I would never do that.”

Wahlberg said he was frustrated with the line of questioning during the Men’s Health interview. “This guy is asking me about sexual questions and I’m married and I have 4 kids, how inappropriate is that?”

[From Radar]

Damn, how many different explanations did he give in one interview? First, he would NEVER disrespect 9/11 families. Then he only disrespected the families because he’s not really an actor, he’s a tough dude from the streets and he just wasn’t thinking. Then he just said that stuff because no one ever wants to talk to him about all of the charity work he does! Then he only said it because he was asked about it and he is forced to go wherever the interviewer wants to go. And finally, he only said that stuff because it’s just the interviewer’s interpretation. For God’s sake, just APOLOGIZE. Just sit down and simply say “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said it. My bad, I was acting like a d-bag.” The cover-up is more offensive than the crime.

Agreed. The retraction is worse than his initial comment. He needs to shut his pie hole now.

  2. brin says:

He just proved what a d bag he is….STFU, Mark!

  3. Tanguerita says:

    dumb douchebag.

  4. mln76 says:

He’s a real guy from the streets who blinded (in one eye) some poor dude because he was Vietnamese. He’s not even a douchebag.

    • Asli says:

ITA. Douche-bag doesn’t even begin to describe him.

    • Faye says:

Yes, just ask that poor guy who is permanently blinded in one eye and who never received one penny of compensation for it what a great, charitable, humanitarian that hero Mark Wahlberg is.

  5. Tapioca says:

Oh yes, a man so “street” he was an original member of NKOTB, then left to give the world Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. I wonder how Hector the Booty Inspector is doing these days?

Then again, maybe he’s drawing on his “real-world” experience in beating a Vietnamese man unconscious and permanently blinding him in one eye with a 2×4 whilst screaming racist abuse in an unprovoked attack…

    • snappy81 says:

Oh, I didn’t realize he was an original member of NKOTB. I thought his brother Donny was the only Wahlberg in NKOTB.

P.S. “I’m not an actor.” No shit! (The material writes itself!) 😀

  6. samira677 says:

I don’t think Mark was being serious about his comment. He’s just playing around with his tough guy image. It’s what a lot of people say when somebody asks “what would you do in X situation?”. But people should n’t do jokes about 9/11. That’s why this turned into a huge deal. I don’t know why people don’t keep apologies simple. If he went with “I’m sorry for offending anybody, that wasn’t my intention”, he would have been fine. The all of the excuses just made seem insincere and dumb.

  7. Pont Neuf says:

Let’s see… Limited talent, no education, not very bright at all, a violent, racist thug who attacked black little children, caused brain damage to a Vietnamese man and destroyed another’s eye, was charged for attempted murder and sentenced to two years in prison for racially motivated assault, a cretin and a boor.

It’s true. People shouldn’t pay attention to whatever worthless bullshit is vomited by this disgusting excuse for a horrible human being.

    • Asli says:

Of which he only served 45 days. What a freaking joke. 45 days for attempted murder. So much for justice…

      • Ewwwww says:

I know, plus to add insult to injury, if he had been black he probably would have had to serve the entire sentence.

      • Asli says:

I hear ya! The fact that he was charged with attempted murder but pleaded guilty to assault which is a common law misdemeanor (and classed a crime of low seriousness) says it all. It’s made so the punishment fits the crime, does 45 days in prison and no apology fit the crime of permanently disabiling a person? ( The reason I’m so upset about this is that this same thing happened to my uncle a couple of years ago. He’s permanently blind and paralyzed on his right side. He used to be a computer ingeneer, but now he’s OD’ing on his medicin because he can’t remember the last time he took ’em 🙁 )

Thank you!!!! I was afraid of clicking on the comments and finding a bunch of remarks that would be sympathetic to this a-hole.

    • TheOriginalVictoria says:

I had no idea that all that went down. Well I’m not surprised. He gives off a very stereotypical Boston vibe. I’m not throwing shade on Bostonians, I’m just saying, I spent half a year there with some relatives and damn, that place is rough on a sista. And I’m from Philly!. I never experienced anything like it in any of the states I’ve been, not even in the boonies.

ETA: to say that this is not indactive of Boston as a whole and this was in the 90s so things are very different I am sure!

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

I’m sad to hear that, OriginalVictoria-I’m Boston born-n’-bred and admittedly, the racial tension that started with the busing crisis of the ’70s is NOT something for us to be proud of (this was before my time). That being said, Boston is an extremely liberal city and I can’t imagine living anywhere else (in the US that is, Europe is another story!). It is mostly open-minded academic types and college kids. I live in Charlestown, an area of Boston that is historically, mainly Irish. I grew up around Irish Americans and the racism that was displayed is more prevalent that anyone over here would like to admit. Please understand that I’m not saying Boston Irish are all racist-I’ve been to Ireland a couple times and I love the Irish (even though I’m French). Just saying that historically, there is some ugliness there that as a Bostonian, I’m not too poud of. Anyway, I hope that you come back to visit, Victoria! It’s a great city with a lot of thoughtful, intelligent people (NOT Mark Wahlberg) and I hope you’ll give it a second chance someday 🙂

      • Mac says:

If I was on board a hijacked flight I’d rather be with someone who is not at all squeamish about gouging an eye out than mostly open-minded academic types and college kids.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Well then Mac-you’d probably be in some deep shit if Wahlberg was on that flight-doubtful he’d be gouging anybody’s eyes out. In fact you’d probably be better off with “academic types”—level-headedness and intelligence doesn’t really hurt when you’re dealing with a hostage scenario.

      • Kaitbird says:

        @original kitten:

pretty sure that 9/11 was not a hostage scenario. just sayin’.

    • The Truth Fairy says:

      Word!

      • TheOriginalVictoria says:

        @OriginalKitten,

I hear similar things, but I just equate the timing. This was around the time of the OJ trial and there was a lot of tension everywhere. I am partly Irish through my grandmother and a lot of her father’s family settled in Boston. I was a kid, but I remember my cousin coming home from school with bruised knees swollen lips and being picked on. It was terrible. I took step dancing and since I was gonna be there for a while, I asked if I could get classes. Well, in Philly, I was met with curiosity, but in Bean Town, the clam chowder was not piping hot okay? LOL. School was not that bad, but there were some comments.

All that aside, it is a beautiful city. I’ve been there since but not for an extended stay; there is so much history! Springfield is also lovely.

  8. Pisa says:

Good on any journalist to not ask him about charity work. I don´t think we need to hear his insights into that. My favorite part (not to imply there was much of a competition) of that quote is how it happens in the first class. Because Marky Mark is just your normal first-class-flying off the streets guy.

    • Tapioca says:

      Charity work?

Like when he took time out of his pants-dropping schedule to plant a celebrity tree?

      🙂

      I love Clueless!

      • Pisa says:

        Haha, I guess so.
But on the other hand, if Douchy Douche would actually get involved in charity work he could easily abolish famine and poverty altogether. In one bloody brilliant first-class move. Too bad he only uses his superpowers in acting. And in giving pearls-of-wisdom-dropping interviews.

  9. Anait says:

If he was on one of those planes he would have pissed himself: generally tough guy like him get scared easily when they meet somebody ready to fight for real, or to kill. He is an actor, he can play the hero in movies, but real life is something different.
P.S. – I didn’t know about all the things written in the comments above… he doesn’t seem to be such a good guy.

  10. Talie says:

Mark lives in a multi-million dollar mansion and belongs to one of the most exclusive country clubs in Los Angeles…he’s a long, long way from the streets.

    • Kimbob says:

@Talie, you’re exactly right. Also, I’d like to remind the bloggers that I read about an incident in an unauthorized biography of Madonna one time about a feud between Mark Wahlberg and Madonna.

Something happened at a party because Wahlberg made an offensive comment, & some guys wanted to fight “Marky-Mark” & he beat a HASTY RETREAT & got the hell out of that party.

Just to remind…little “Marky-Mark” WANTS the public in general to think he’s some kind of tough guy…..he is NOT! He’s a punk…that’s all he really is.

And yes, he never should have brought that 911 issue up again. Not only is he a punk, he’s an idiot, too.

    • lilred says:

Come on gated communities and country clubs are tough to get into it’s like being street…straight up!

  11. Skins says:

I think a lot of these action heroes think that they are tough guys in real life too. I’d like to see a real tough guy squash this little twerp

  12. serena says:

I’m sure he didn’t mean that, and now he’s really sorry. Anyway I love him and he DOES seem to be a good guy, really it’s Mark!

    • lilred says:

Did you read the above comments? Is he to be given a pass on attempted murder and assault because he’s Mark….seriously!

  13. Jules says:

He’s a shitty actor and a shittier human.

  14. Frank says:

Just a kid from the street talking some smack. Anyone who has been there has done the same thing, just he had a microphone in his face is all. Grow up people, stop throwing stones from your glass houses.

    • Pisa says:

You got me! I make all these awesome holocaust and 9/11 jokes on a daily basis. They are the funniest.
Also I don´t know why people on here give him crap for being a little racist shithead that beat up at least two people in a very severe way. People, hello, he is from the streets, who of you hasn´t been there and done that? Anyways, that was probably just another one of his brilliant jokes. Oh, and Frank, if anyone says anything negative about our bro on here or throws a stone sitting in a glass house as you would put it I think we should just accuse them of being jealous. Trust me, that works EVERY time, it´s a knock out argument.

    • jinni says:

But he’s not a kid anymore, he’s a grown man and should know better. Besides these new comments just ruin whatever goodwill or benefit of the doubt people were giving him after he apologized.

    • Faye says:

Um, since none of us (presumably) have blinded, harassed, or shouted racial epithets at people, we’re not in glass houses. Hence the “stone-throwing” can commence.

  15. Jackie says:

this guy seems as dumb as a bag of rocks.

  16. Sigh. says:

How does he know there weren’t also people “from da streets” on those hijacked planes? Including the hijackers themselves (Boston/The US certainly did and does not have exclusive rights to tough guys from bad neighborhoods)?

Whatevs. Please, act, think, but don’t talk.

    • Teel says:

There probably were, just not in first-class.
Does anybody else think it’s douchey that he had to make it clear that he would have been in first class? I don’t know why that bugs me so much . . .

    • Ewwwww says:

Yep, I read somewhere else that there was an ex Special Forces guy on the flight that Marky Mark was supposed to take. He tried to do something and got his throat cut. I’m sure Marky Mark, having seen that, would have lept to the man’s defense…um, no he wouldn’t and he probably would have pissed his pants. SHUT UP MARKY MARK!

  17. LouRob says:

Come on guys, he’s got a movie coming out. He’ll make any stupid-shit comment he can to keep his name in the headlines.

  18. TheOriginalKitten says:

I have nothing to say about this guy. Glad he stopped repping Boston a LONG time ago. His brother’s restaurant is good. That’s all I got.

    • Asli says:

LOL! TOK – this idiot probably thinks he put Boston ”on the map”. Boston’s great, save for this piece of inbred sh-t. Great that people like him are starting to get picked off, not by violence but common sense, people are starting to come together and work together. The misogynist bastard is probably stuck in the 90’s Boston, people change Mark! Well, some do… I’m going to say something nice and that is that Mark HAS changed… he doesn’t attack people on a regular basis anymore! Yay! What a f-cking accomplishment.

  19. Incredulous says:

I’m not a doctor but I’m pretty sure third nipples do not give you superpowers.

    • The Truth Fairy says:

      lmao

    • Gina says:

Very funny about the 3rd nipple. Douche McDouchebag has little mans complex(Napoleon complex). I’m from the streets of NYC and I have never in my life beaten someone. Some of the most sophisticated people in the world come from the street. He IS NOT from the street. He is from the gutter. Big dif. I have no problem no seeing his films. They all suck.

  20. Heather M (Heather) says:

I recall wanting to like him after seeing him in movie, but then I Googled him & realized what a racist, violent POS he was. Disappointing.

And what kind of delusional moron thinks he can fly a plane with no training? I get the whole taking things out of context & being misquoted argument, but how freaking insensitive & absolutely stupid can you get? And then to say he would “protect innocent people”…with his history & criminal record of beating up innocent people? What. An. Idiot.

  21. SG says:

“And all of a sudden this thing became this thing — I didn’t know where it came from.”

Uh, it came straight from your mouth, Marky Mark.

  22. lucy2 says:

Agree he should have just apologized and been done with it. Rambling on and on only makes it worse.

I hate when celebs whine that the media doesn’t pay attention to their charity work – they shouldn’t be doing it for the attention! They should be doing it to help others, and in his case he should be trying to atone for the horrible life he lived before becoming famous.

  23. Girl says:

While I agree that asking him about masturbation was out of line, I thought their publicists and handlers field questions ahead of time. I thought bigger name celebrities had it like that.

And he just needs to nut up or shut up. That was a non-apology. No one misunderstood him. He said an incredibly insensitive, dumdshit thing.

    • Jordan says:

According to Marky Mark, he’ll field any question they throw at him…until of course it doesn’t work out for him and then he’ll whine like a little b*tch and say it was all the big bad interviewers fault.

  24. The Truth Fairy says:

    DEAR MARKY MARK:

YOU SEVERELY BEAT AN INNOCENT MAN AND POKED HIS EYE OUT BECAUSE HE WAS ASIAN. DURING YOUR ATTACK YOU WERE SCREAMING RACIAL SLURS.

WHEN YOU BECAME RICH AND FAMOUS YOU NEVER ATTEMPTED TO FIND THE MAN TO APOLOGIZE OR MAKE AMENDS. YOU ARE A PUNK AND A DISGUSTING PIECE OF TRASH. JUST GO AWAY!

  25. Kelly says:

Not sure if this was mentioned in a different thread, but on the flight Wahlberg was supposed to be on, there was a real hero – Daniel Lewin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_M._Lewin Lewin – who served in the Israeli Defense Force (the freakin’ IDF – which is pretty serious) – was the first hero of 9/11, murdered as he attempted to foil the hijackers and save the flight. They slit his throat.

So if Wahlberg thinks he could’ve gotten the job done where a former IDF soldier failed, all I have to say to Wahlberg is, “Shut your goddamn mouth, you goddamn coward.”

    • Pont Neuf says:

Well said! This execrable cretin thinks that he is tough because he is a violent criminal who beat up on defenseless, truly innocent people. I’d like to see him trying to measure up against someone genuinely evil. He probably would cower on a corner and beg for mercy.

In contrast, Daniel Lewin was a truly outstanding man who gave up his life trying to save those of others – the very definition of a hero.

  26. Bobby the K says:

He’s a real guy, from Mucus On The Block.

  27. skuddles says:

Not to worry Marky, nobody’s every confused you for an actual actor. We know you’re just some moron with a big yap.

  28. Eve says:

    Dipshit.

  29. Rook says:

Ugh, so over this. He didn’t say or do anything wrong. He was only expressing a thought that a billion of us have–“I totally would’ve kicked those terrorist asses if I’d been on that plane.” He’s talking based upon what we know now. This is so f-ing stupid. And, I don’t like this guy! Stop making me defend him!

  30. danielle says:

He sounds like a deluded moron. I can never unhear that he said that, and I will forever after think of him as an idiot.

  31. Jayna says:

Yawn. Thats all I have to say. Interviews like this makes me appreciate George Clooney. At least he has a sense of humour about himself.

  32. lisa says:

I think he is an ass.

I will say I am a bit mmmm.. funny how his past has never to my knowledge been brought up. He has been fawned over for his underwear ads. his TV show. I had no idea about his violent past. Never saw him on tabloids or people saying they were going to boycott his shows or movies. Never heard women calling him names or whatever about his past behavior. Or questioning his care of his children.

None of that became NEWS until he made that comment about 911. Now all the past is brought up. I just find it interesting the people the public choices to hammer for past things and who they turn the other cheek for. I can think of celebrities that get trashed and none of them have hurt another person, been arrested or done any of the violent things Mark has done.

I guess it is just how some people are.. using that Double standard

Mark is a dbag and seems very full of himself. His comments should not be surprising.

  33. jferber says:

Ditto to everyone’s comments. I still say he should find the Asian men he disabled, apologize and give them restitution. He should also now start doing charity work for 9/11 victims. He won’t mean any of it, but so what? He’ll still be doing some good.

  34. CHRISTIAN_GIRL says:

    Okay, people enough of this.

Will you ALL let your dollars speak and STOP paying him by seeing his films?

That’s really the only way to be heard. Being offended sometimes is not enough. Pull back on your reigns and deny yourself his films.

He also went on to discuss being a business man? Really, who keeps watching his movies and TV shows? Who will join his golf link? Who will buy his water? To those who support him, HE IS TALKING TO YOU about how tough he is. Since I don’t, he sounds like a typical idiot tough guy on paper that I am not willing to shell out money for.

  35. The Bechdel Test says:

Pft. After the life he’s led over the past 20 years he’d be as soft as butter.

  36. Hawk says:

I’m so tired of his “from the streets” rap. Just shut up and do your movies dumbass.

  37. mimi says:

this guy is still a racist. he hasn’t changed at all, judging by his comments like the time he said that helena bonham carter when she was dressed as an ape (planet of the apes) looked like janet jackson, even his show Entourage was filled with racist and homophobic jokes that one of the actors rex lee had opened up about it. this guy is disgusting, and needs to stfu. he is an embarrassment to his family.
