Brad Pitt on his Oscar nom: “I say give George Clooney all the trophies!”

In the wake of yesterday’s Oscar nominations announcement, seemingly every actor nominated has issued statements. Some are touching, some are purely professional, and all are ass-kissy – you can read some of the statements here. I was drawn to Brad Pitt’s statement, of course, because he actually gave an interview to the Today Show after his nomination came out, and he has more to say than “It’s an honor, blah, blah.”

Brad Pitt’s six kids with Angelina Jolie are in for a treat!

“It’s gonna be pancakes for everyone this morning!” the 48-year-old actor said when he phoned in to the Today show Tuesday morning. Just minutes earlier, the Moneyball actor was nominated in the Best Actor category at the 84th Annual Academy Awards.

Pitt — who will face off against George Clooney (The Descendants), Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Jean Dujardin (The Artist) and Demian Bichir (A Better Life) — said he’s “ecstatic” to be recognized.

“It means so much considering this film was just dead on the rocks two years ago,” Pitt said. “It took a lot of people, a lot of artisans and craftsmen, to get it to the screen. It’s a great honor, a real tribute to Billy Beane and Oakland A’s organization. I’m really happy.”

The actor’s 28-year-old costar Jonah Hill also scored his first Academy Award nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category. “I’m so happy for Jonah Hill,” Pitt raved. “I can’t tell you.”

Moneyball wasn’t the only film to earn Pitt praise. “I’m doubly happy that Tree of Life made it in there,” he said. “We thought we were all but forgotten; just excited for [director and nominee] Terry Malick.”

The actor and producer, who’s been in love with 36-year-old Jolie since 2005, said he’s looking forward to seeing Clooney, 50, at the show.

“It’s more fun to have a friend there, and no one does it better than George,” Pitt said. “I say give him all the trophies, and when you run out of trophies, make some new ones and give him those, too.”

[From Us Weekly]

That’s interesting that Brad is coming out in support of Clooney too – much like Clooney has been talking up Brad’s nominations throughout this awards season too. While it’s easy to think that they’re two controlling type-A ballbusters who are just needling each other publicly, I think there is a genuine warmth between the two men. Clooney wants to win, of course, but if he lost to Brad, I don’t think he would be too worked up about it. And dear God, I hope Clooney does lose to Brad. I’ve discussed how much I loved Moneyball – I think it’s one of Brad’s best career performances, and worthy of an Oscar.

Oh, and I love that Brad gave a shout-out to Jonah Hill, who was also amazing in Moneyball. Can you believe that Jonah Hill is an Oscar nominee now? Incredible.

Aww, William Bradley Pitt… U totally won me over :-D. Don’t cede to George already… Man, i’m still rootin’… Lol!

    • Capella says:

I don’t interpret this as giving in to George, I see snark! And good snark!

Doesn’t it sound like he is poking fun a bit at George’s all out politician-like self-promotion, and the way he is working not only the public, but the voters too?

Love how Brad thinks of making his family happy, because he is happy, by flipping pancakes. That is a true dad!

    • anon says:

Me to 🙂 So gracious and sweet. Hang in there Sakyiwaa!

      • Sakyiwaa says:

        Lol, anon!

The thing with Brad is that I didn’t get into him this hard till about 6 or 7 years ago…

First flick I saw was the Dark Side of the Sun. Pretty forgettable. But then i saw Troy, Fight Club, Snatch, Spy Game, Se7en, Ocean’s Eleven… Then i saw LEGENDs and INTERVIEW WITH A VAMP, and a FAN was born! I’ve seen everything else since… Apart the entire length of Thelma and Louise, too young to die, seven years in tibet, twelve monkeys and kalifornia.

        I’m hangin’ in there!

        @ Sakyiwaa
Snatch and Fight Club FTW!! Two of my favorite films of all time, also Twelve Monkeys. I loved Brad in Twelve Monkeys hahaha! He was brilliant.

  2. helvetica says:

    Jean Dujardin !

    • ruokmiss? says:

two words: gary oldman. that is all.

      • Tapioca says:

        I ♥ U!

Sadly he doesn’t brown-nose Hollywood or have Harvey Weinstein (The Artist) to do it for him so he’s not going to win.

Hopefully Jean DJ will have the edge over George Clooney playing George Clooney though, as The Academy® seem to love those mute performances, like Holly Hunter in The Piano.

      • mln76 says:

Hee-hee eventhough I’m such a loonie I’m still rooting for Oldman. He’s so f-ing talented. Brad comes second. I haven’t seen Bichir’s film but I liked him on Weeds. The Artist was really good but Best Picture and Actor???? I don’t see it-still its much better than the overhyped Descendents.

      • helvetica says:

Well, either Gary or Jean Dujardin.
I feel like Oscar lately leaning to Popularity contest not talent

    • Wendy says:

Jean Dujardin @ #2. Exactly why Clooney keeps talking up Pitt and exactly why Pitt is now talking up Clooney. Les salauds!

  3. whatevs says:

    get a haircut dude

  4. kazoo says:

Shush Brad before they hear you!

If Clooney wins…gah. I actually don’t have a problem with him, but The Descendants looks like some drippy made for TV movie. However, the Oscars have a tendency to award actors who seem “past due” for really terrible films.

    • Capella says:

The stretch in George’s acting here, is that he is playing a FATHER!

yeah, I know, what acting chops! Forgive my snark, I couldn’t help it with George;)

  5. lisa says:

I love him in that white shirt and tie.

I think he and George like each other a lot so it’s nice to see that bromance. NOt a huge George fan, but I will admit. I enjoy seeing them in interviews together. they make me laugh.

But Brad’s speeches have been very humble and funny. Keeping the focus on the films and the people that worked on them.

I’m biased and wants him to win. Just like fans of other actors. And the fact that he produced 2 of the best films nominated.. well clapping for him. That is HUGE

Congrats to Jonah too. I know some may not agree with either getting a nomination but that is how it works. I think Jonah did a great job. And his and Brad chemistry in the film and off is lovely to see. I just saw their Q & A for SAG and it was really funny and informative.

so I’m glad and hope for a win.

  6. lucy2 says:

The two of them are going to get all the media attention for the next few weeks and will say stuff like this the whole time. I hope after all that, the Oscar gets handed to one of the other guys who got no hype!

  7. Maya says:

Meh…what a lame comment from Brad.
Now I want Gary Oldman to win x 1000, if only to see the look on the faces of Cloopitt.

    • mln76 says:

Why is it a lame comment?? If you watch the interview he was specifically asked what do you thing about George getting nominated NOT what do you think about all the nominees. Some people are never happy.

  8. Nelly says:

I really hope Brad wins the oscar, he totally deserves it and also cause i can’t stand Clooney.

  9. Bianca says:

Brad for the win!!!!!!! It’s time!!!

  10. shontay says:

I’m glad SOMEBODY admits to enjoying Moneyball at this point. The nominations of Brad and Jonah are worthy. I don’t hate Clooney, but I’d love to see him lose to Brad even though Brad has done better in his carerr(my opinion, of course). Jean Dujardin winning just brings to mind Roberto Benini and I don’t want to remember that.

  11. Celebasshat says:

Helo kaiser thank God u are back and healthy. Sure miss u

  12. Lucy says:

I’ve seen both The Descandents and Moneyball…loved Moneyball…Descedants just didn’t ring true to me and I just can never lose myself in a Clooney performance…I never forget that that is George Clooney acting up on that screen…whereas in Moneyball, totally believed Brad was Billy Beane…

  13. Bite me says:

Gary old man has been pimping hard for Oscar too

  14. serena says:

I hope Brad win this one, Clooney is starting to piss me off.

  15. Sophie says:

    OLDMAN FTW!

    • ruokmiss? says:

yeah, baby! sid vicious. joe orton. rosencrantz. dracula. beethoven. drexl spivey. oswald. the time has come. the time is now.

  16. Andrea says:

    Aww

  17. truthSF says:

I want Gary Oldman or Brad Pitt to win the oscar, but the only sure thing about the Academy is their need to give the award to the biggest kiss-ass ( Portman, Bullock, Clooney) of the year.

    • Camille (The original) says:

I agree. Would LOVE to see Oldman win and if not him then Pitt. Anyone over Clooney would be perfect.

  18. LMAO says:

Clooney wants it so bad that even Pitt is ready to give it him out of pity !
If it’s about talent Gary Oldman deserves it, if it’s about famewhoring and ass kissing power then no doubt Clooney deserves it

  19. Shay Kay says:

Translation: “I want it but if you’re not giving it to me than hand it over to my friend George over there. Now next year George will have had his and I better get mine.”
I do love that they keep the bromance above the Hollywood Hoopla in their relationship.

  20. Roma says:

I missed the post yesterday as I was out on business but when the nominations were being announced and they said “Jonah Hill” you could hear an audible gasp.

I have a feeling that Jonah Hill did the exact same thing at home.

  21. The Original Mia says:

You’re back, Kaiser! Glad to see you & your wit back on the site.

I love the bromance between George & Brad. It’s what makes the Ocean movies work. I’m rooting for Brad to win, but I won’t be upset if George win.

Although, I’m not Jonah Hill’s biggest fan, I’m happy for him as well. Moneyball was great.

  22. foozy says:

george got the golden globe. hope you get the oscar! if not, hope jean dujardin gets it and if not, then gary oldman. although i love george toooooooooo

  23. Gigi says:

I love Brad and I always will, but I cringe when I read these fluff quotes from him. We all know how much Brad wants that trophy, but of course he has to run with the whole humility schtick. Sure, I believe that he and George would not feel as badly about losing if it’s to each other, but Brad’s not really just willing to give it away. He wants it, and if we’re to go by how much promotion the Brange has been doing of late, he wants it really, really bad. God, I hope he gets it.

  24. Nanea says:

I think it’s nice of Brad to reveal how desperately George is campaigning!

It’s about time someone other than gossip sites called GC out on that.

  25. Nev says:

    clooney is yawn.

    give it to brad already.

  26. normades says:

    TEAM BRAD and Team Moneyball!!!

Brad did great work this year. He’s due. Please give it to him already! (actually I’d be Ok with any of them before George).

And Jonah has been showing a lot of range as an actor lately. I don’t get why people are so surprised.

  27. Nibbi says:

It occurs to me that Pitt seems like a hell of a lot of fun to be with, and not just because he’s hot.

Clooney too in fact, but I’d rather hang with Pitt (not to mention Jolie…) than with Clooney cuz Pitt seems to appreciate interesting/intelligent women more than Clooney, who seems purely interested in tail.

  28. BobbytheK says:

I know this sounds sexist or whatever, but i can’t imagine a female nominee saying the same thing about a fellow actress.

Brad, George & AJ seem so cool.

  29. blonde on the dock says:

Neither Clooney or Pitt deserve an Oscar. They are mediocre actors at best.

  30. xploxite says:

I hope Clooney Get it he’s a Brilliant actor and i Loved the movie, he was awesome.

  31. xploxite says:

Btw it makes no sense when a nomine wasn’t good enough to win the golden globe would be even nominated for the oscar.

    • CHRISTIAN_GIRL says:

xploxite, this is NOT a serious statement. Can’t be.

Have you never followed how the awards go? List of nominies and only 1 winner. They all work the same way in ALL catagories. Honor is in being nominated as only top 5 are amongst all the rest.

Brad has put out awesome films that were not overlooked and they could not have been. He also gets the producing credits. He has upped his game and will continue to be a force to reckon with based on his film choices. He makes his fans proud that he matured and saw the value in his craft.

Jonah Hill came up too and layed it down in MB. He is getting recognized too. Would not have thought it.

To be able to grow and shift is what brings longevity. Brad is great at that. He contantly changes direction and characters for roles with a bent or different edge. No telling what he will play and certainly not typecast. Not to mention who he puts thru Plan B.
