Ryan Reynolds looks less gerbily, less bronzed: Blake Lively’s influence?

Dear Hollywood: This is why more women need to be more films. Because sausage-party photo calls are SO BORING. These are pics of Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington at the Madrid photo call for their new film, Safe House. I saw the trailer recently, and I wasn’t very impressed – here it is:

It’s like they’re refiguring the Jason Bourne formula, right? And are we buying Ryan Reynolds as the reluctant action star? Are we buying Denzel as the badass super-spy? I don’t know. It just seems like a weird movie.

As for the photo call – Ryan looks good, I have to admit. He doesn’t look so gerbily, and he doesn’t look he’s gone overboard on the bronzer. Blake Lively’s influence, I’m hoping. Denzel, meanwhile, looks like he’s about to punch someone in the face. Ryan, perhaps. People Mag had an interesting story about what happened between Ryan and Denzel while they filmed Safe House:

It turns out that action star Ryan Reynolds may be just as dangerous off-screen as he is on. Denzel Washington says that Reynolds gave him a black eye while they were filming Safe House in South Africa.

“I’ve never had a black eye in my life!” Washington, 57, told reporters Saturday while promoting the film, which hits theaters Feb. 10. “There’s a scene where I reach over to try to choke him while I have handcuffs on. We were flying around in the car. It just happened that as I was reaching forward he was flying back … and POW.”

Reynolds, 35, plays a CIA newbie who is forced to watch over Washington, a notorious fugitive. The two eventually end up on the run together, with plenty of brawls between the brawny costars.

Reynolds joked that this punch was a highlight of his career. “That was my early retirement,” he said. “I’ve given Denzel Washington a black eye and I should probably go home.” But Reynolds admitted that he was a little embarrassed after the incident, saying, “It was weird to feel my face on fire.”

Regardless, said Reynolds, “I’m glad I was your first. If it had to be anyone, it was an apologetic Canadian.”

[From People]

LOL at “apologetic Canadian.” THAT is who Ryan is, right? He’s not a badass action star, he’s an apologetic Canadian.

For all the bland-ness that is Ryan Reynolds he is pretty funny. And… Denzels latest movies have been really bad. What’s happening? Bad scripts or bad choices? My favorite Denzel movie is ‘Mr. X’ but the last couple of years his movies has been hit or miss. Mostly miss for me.

Also, at least Ryan isn’t delusional and thinks he’s an action hero in real life too like Mark Wahlberg does. Refreshing.

    • Petunia says:

Yep, I’m with you. A good sense of humor is SEXY.

And who says that apologetic yet funny people can’t be great action heroes? What about Harrison Ford?

  2. Azurea says:

Less gerbil, but more mole! Or shrew! Or badger! Whatever it is, I don’t like it!

    • Mimi says:

Me either. And besides, Lively is kind of a bronzed gerbil in her own right, or maybe more like a bronze ferret?

    • brin says:

Maybe ground hog seeing that it’s almost Feb. BTW, there’s a pic of ScarJo arm-in-arm with some dude.

      • Sarko says:

        Oh yes!
I’m hoping Kaiser posts Scar Jo and he
And what about the pics of Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield slobbering all over each other. I wonder why that ain’t front page?

    • Valkyrie says:

I think he looks like a squirrel. Yet another one that needs to hit that mono brow with some wax.

  3. originalone says:

Ryan does not look good in still pictures… Unless he has his shirt off, well, you don’t see the face. His forehead and pointy chine highlights his cone-like head.

But Ryan is good in movies. I like him as the unwilling action star. I’m just hoping he makes better career choices.

Denzel however, well… He’s the Julia Roberts of male actors. Self-entitled and annoying. Injected with a bit of sexism and cheating on his wife history.

    • Lis says:

“Injected with a bit of sexism and cheating on his wife history.”

I’ve heard the many, many cheating rumours about Washington. I haven’t heard about the sexism.

      Er, could someone enlighten me?

    • originalone says:

@Lis, there were complaints during filming of many movies. I believe there was Eva Mendes who had first hinted on that (Training Day), and there were a few more throughout the years. The NE had done some coverage, on how some have slept with him, but others refused and accused him of harassment.

  4. The Truth Fairy says:

He just doesn’t do it for me….

  5. Julie says:

OMG, I am IN LOVE with Denzel and have been forever. I wonder if I can meet him in heaven since I obviously won’t anywhere in this life. Ryan does look less orange but he doesn’t turn me on in the least.

  6. ladyballz says:

I wonder if this is anything like the Harrison Ford/Josh harnett thing- where Josh fucked up in a car chase scene and crashed the car or something and Ford got a hernia/groin injury from it. He HATED that kid from there on out. Funny…I wonder if he blackballed him? Where IS Josh Harnett?
    Watch your back ferretface.

  7. Lis says:

Don’t see the appeal of either of them.

But I do want to see that film. I like brainless shoot-’em-ups. (I may have been the only person who really liked “Columbiana”.)

@originalone “Denzel however, well… He’s the Julia Roberts of male actors. Self-entitled and annoying. Injected with a bit of sexism and cheating on his wife history.”

Amen to that!! I’ve always wondered about the hype he gets, he can only do ONE charachter, himself! just like J. Roberts…

  9. Roland says:

I don’t hate the slim fit jeans/pants look but that guy on the right in the last picture is all kinds of wrong.

  10. Franny says:

less gerbily? I think he looks MORE gerbily!

  11. Turd Fergussen says:

It’s that his eyes are too close together and they’re BEADY. I can’t get past it.

  12. lucy2 says:

I couldn’t figure it out until someone said that his face was too small for his head, and that’s it! It actually looks worse, like his face is shrinking. I don’t find him attractive.

Denzel was a great, interesting actor at one point, but it seems like he’s playing the same thing over and over now. I swear there’s some sort of B grade action/thriller script factory churning them out, and they hire Denzel or Liam Neeson and call it a day.

  13. Jezi says:

I lurve him!! I have lurved him for a long time…lol. I can’t help it, Ryan is so damn funny and when he was shirtless in the rain in the Amityville Horror remake…yum yum yum yum yum!

    • Camille (The original) says:

Agree! He needs to be shirtless in at least one scene in every movie he does. The guy has a gorgeous body.

      • Jezi says:

OMG he so does. Especially the triangle area pointing toward the special somewhere. Hehe! I need a cold shower.

  14. JenJen says:

I’m normally all over RR, but this isn’t doing it for me. His head looks really weird and candy-corn shaped. Maybe it’s the facial hair, I usually like him with more scruff than he’s got in these pics. The hair makes his forehead look massive, and he’s pretty pale… meh. No thanks, not today.

  15. YokoDMV says:

    his mouth is too small..

  16. LeeLoo says:

Denzel’s gotten kind of chunky. I don’t know, I think I may go see that movie. It has spy action and I wouldn’t mind some mindless spy action.

  17. spinner says:

Ryan is just too rodentesque for me.

    NO.

  18. original sandy says:

i never notice this before, but Ryan’s eyebrows are so far from his hair line, weir.

  19. Feebee says:

Now see because I’m used to seeing RR all bronzed up, he looks like he’s been winterized. No sunny vacation this year.

I’ve always thought he was funny and think he does better in the everyman roles rather than action hero. I’m not condemning him from varying it up, god forbid he stays one note like some others I won’t mention.

Looks wise he has good days and bad days but a sense of humour camouflages a lot of flaws.

  20. Camille (The original) says:

I like RR as an actor and Denzel is at his best when he is playing the bad guy, so I will probably check this out.

  21. Stubbylove says:

I just don’t get Reynolds as a badass/action hero – he has yet to be able to pull it off – it’s def not a natural transition from comedy for him. Even his main character Amityville Horror had a funny edge to him. And just..well..God Bless Denzel!

  22. NeoCleo says:

His eyes look like they are set too close together.
