Madonna barred from adopting second child from Malawi

Madonna’s possible adoption of Malawian orphan Mercy James is officially over. It’s been rumored for quite a while that Madge was trying to buy herself another baby and skirt all of Malawi’s adoption rules again. The stress of trying to get Mercy is supposedly one of the major contributing factors in the demise of her marriage. Ironically because of the divorce, Madonna now has no shot at adopting Mercy.

Madonna’s divorce from Guy Ritchie has put paid to her plans to adopt from Malawi again, according to the country’s Child Welfare Services director. The Material Girl has long shown an interest in giving a home to orphan Mercy James, who she first met at an orphanage in 2006.

But Malawian official Penston Kilembe says the split with Guy, 40, means the adoption cannot be approved.

‘One fundamental condition in scrutinising adoptions is the connectedness of a family,’ he says. ‘We can’t approve a child to go into a broken family because the divorce could be the result of the behaviour of the party trying to adopt. Madonna should forget this one.’

Madge, 50, adopted David Banda, 3, from Malawi last year – but Penston insists the split won’t affect him. ‘His future will be decided by the British courts, who determine issues of custody,’ he tells Grazia. ‘He is no longer our responsibility.’

[From Now]

Mercy’s own extended family didn’t want her to be adopted by Madonna. Her uncle and grandmother steadfastly refused to let her go to any family outside the country. Authorities were really putting a lot of pressure on her grandma to let Madonna have Mercy. It sounds like now the family will get their wish and hopefully Mercy will be adopted by into a Malawian home.

On one hand..HA!!! to Madonna..on the other hand I hope this doesn’t affect this little girl from getting a home 🙁

  2. Syko says:

    Thank heavens!

  3. Thank gawd, this woman needs no more children right now. I say phone up Brangelina…they have room for one more.

  4. Kaiser says:

Gawd, nice track suit. I hope and pray Guy gets custody of these kids.

  5. Yer Mom says:

Thank God. Is her plan to adopt the entire freaking Third World?

  6. Ron says:

You may not like Madonna at all, but to wish that her children are taken away is beyond heartless. Shame on you.

  7. devilgirl says:

    Good. Score one for Malawi!

  8. breederina says:

. . . and the children of Malawi sent up a silent prayer of thanks .

  9. jacqueline says:

she never ever strikes me as being at all maternal, never speaks maternally, acts maternally or appears maternal. People often criticise Angelina for adopting children for the media-coverage or whatever . . . but in truth, it seems to me that madonna should be the one in-line for such criticism – and why isnt she??
Angelina shows warmth, affection & compassion (maternal features & instincts), but never madonna. her very name is pure self-obsession; she oozes narcissism. Poor Lourdes & David . . . .

  10. EB says:

I’ve always felt that Madonna’s adoption of David was an example of what happens in a developing country with very little resources -she should never have been allowed to adopt him. There weren’t any laws on the books and he had family alive anyway! Why not adopt a child who truly has no family? What is she doing to raise this child with knowledge of his family and traditions?

As a mother, she just strikes me as very rigid, and parents need to be flexible, because children are human beings not robots. And the way she’s handled this divorce thus far doesn’t bode well for her children now…I feel bad for them.

And there was much rejoicing !!

  12. Shane says:

    yes indeed.

  13. CH says:

Get a grip people, ok she may not be the best role model for a child but Lourdes doesn’t look exactly troubled does she? Why is ok for Brad & Angie to adopt loads of kids (r we forgetin her self harming days & that vial of blood she wore rond her neck?!) but why is not ok for Madonna??
Even as a single parent, surely she has more to offer a child than anyone tryin to apopt one in their own country?!

  14. Jeanne says:

Good, children are not accessories. Pay attention and love the ones you have.

  15. Alecto says:

It’s ok for Angelina cuase it appears that she is a wild child much reformed and grown up. Angelina appears to be someone that made her mistakes, learned from them, grew from them, and has become someone else. Madonna on the other had appears to be someone who is completely narcasisstic, fake, and a b ryming with itch. Madonna didn’t come across as sincere when she bought David. The fact that she’s trying to buy another raises more eyebrows. Maybe becuase I have never been a Madonna fan I feel this way.

*Edit* And I used to wish I could be Angelina with her black hair whild tat’s amazing lips and now have came around like her. Although I’m not adopting insane amount of human babies like her. Instead I have an insane amount of non-human babies plus a few human ones. Maybe that’s why I sympathize with her more.

  16. Yadira says:

I agree Alecto, Madonna refuses to grow up and thinks she is “bigger than Jesus” himself. Why didn’t she adopt before? She’s been roaming around on this earth since the time of the dinosaurs so why is it that once Angelina became cool for adopting Maddox, all of a sudden MadVadge got an itch to buy er.. adopt a kid? She is full of herself and thinks people are accessories

  17. IMO says:

I totally understand the family. American celebrities seem to view developing countries as a big supermarket for children.

These children have a country, a culture and some family members and they should be raised there instead of being taken away.

If you want to help these countries- give them money and support democratization processes, so they will be able to raise their own children.

  18. SolitaryAngel says:

I thought the term “orphan” referred to a child with no parents; that is not the case with little David; he has a father, but was still living in an orphanage! WTF?

I have tried to give Madonna a chance, but a person who is her age and still insists on spending 2 hours (or more) a day in the gym clearly loves herself more than her motherhood. Priorities aren’t in the correct order, are they?

And, I’m so glad that she is barred from buying—-uh, *adopting* any more children from Malawi; but she’ll probably find another country to shop in. 🙄

  19. vdantev says:

Can NONE of you thoughtless apes enter a thread about children (or anything else for that matter) WITHOUT mentioning AJ ??

God’s blood, there are thousands of celebrities in the world and several of them have adopted kids, but NO it all goes back to her.

It’s some sort of mental illness, this obsessiveness you have.

  20. geronimo says:

I’m glad this has fallen through, not least because of Madonna’s recent behaviour towards Guy which showed an astonishing lack of consideration and respect for the kids she already has.

  21. Ana' says says:

I seriously don’t get why she wanted to adopt another child when her current lifestyle calls for her current adopted child to be raised mostly by nannies. That’s just plain selfish. Begs the question, was this the reason why she and Guy continued with their happily married sham for over a year? As difficult as David’s adoption was, Madge had to know the adoption of the 2nd child from Malawi would be all but impossible without her marriage appearing to be intact.

Dante, a point can be made without name-calling.

  23. daisy424 says:

    She’s too old period.

  24. vdantev says:

Dante, a point can be made without name-calling.

Used to be a time that was so, but now you can’t tap people politely on the shoulder, you have to smack them in the face with a sledgehammer- or they think you’re joshing around.

  25. Baholicious says:

…I was defending the apes

  26. Victoria says:

What is this? Madonna cannot have something she wants? What an insult! You’ll see, they will change the law just for her! Isn’t she the patron saint of Malawi? Didn’t she fly in from Heaven to save them? Doesn’t all the taxis in Malawi have plastic figures of her on the dashboard?

  27. RReedy says:

Madonna trots around with this black child like he is an accessory…the latest fad….making a statement. Guy should relinguish custody to David to Madonna since this was HER project but leave Rocco with his British father.

  28. vdantev says:

…I was defending the apes

    😆

  29. Lauri says:

Thank God at least one child has been saved from a horrible fate.

I have to wonder, if she is so passionate about the children of Malawi, why doesn’t she actually do something selfless like, oh…I don’t know…sponsor a village and use some of her millions to make it a better place to live, rather than snatch children away from their families?

She could easily afford to do things to help children have a better life right there in their own country. Why not sponsor an orphanage and guarantee all of the children clean clothes, nutritious food and water, and provide a good education for them, so that they can grow up and have the tools to help improve their own country? Wouldn’t that be a better way to help this impoverished country, rather than stealing children away from their families and using them as fashion accessories?

  30. Naffy says:

People get a life.. I come from Malawi and I give all the credits to Madonna for adopting in Malawi. EB, you said David and Mercy had family, yes they did have a family but remember, these kids were in the orphanage.. Trust me, no kid deserves to be in an orphanage, especially in Malawi. David had malnutrition. That kid would be dead by now if not for Madonna, yet you claim he had family. Remember, child in the orphanage, is an orphan. Stop being selfish, and insensitive. We Malawians are proud that at least Madonna stepped up to help these kids. I’m on my way to adopting mine from Malawi.
